Black flowers ; chapter 9, 'GM Free'
*Present Day*
The tree's branches moved softly in the warm spring breeze, and the soft spring blossoms filled the air like snow. Inside, the Z fighters and their families were listening, stunned and horrified by what they had heard. Some of the women were crying. Not a word was spoken at first, nothing anyone could think of saying. Their hearts sank to know such a situation could have taken place in another time, and maybe still in this one.
The six youths were just as silent. For them, this was their past, their very creation. To be born from something so sardonic, so unreal, so grotesque… They could feel the Z gang's eyes on them, knowing what thoughts ran through their heads.
"Don't feel you have to comment." Rhiamon added genuinely. "This can't be easy for any of you." It was all too expected it would take a lot for this to be accepted.
Trunks stood up from his place, and left the room silently. Cadell watched him, silently masking his fear of the disgust his father might have for him, as a son.
"Our lives… don't matter in this equation. We're here to prevent any of this happening. It can't happen again…" Rayne said with pain in her voice. "If it means we won't be in this time, so be it."
The other youths seemed to stand by their sibling on this point, it was visible in their eyes.
"Something's wrong with Eira!" Shouted Trunks suddenly, running back briefly into the silent room. The youths looked at each other, before leaping up and running after Trunks. They rushed into the lounge, where Eira had been sleeping. Cadell was the first to rush to her side. The others followed worriedly.
"Eira!" Cadell called. Eira began struggling and thrashing, but her eyes remained tightly shut. She screamed. "Eira!" Cadell called again. He caught Eira by the shoulders and shook her lightly. "Wake up!" He said desperately. Eira stirred, but her eyes were clenched shut.
"Come on Eira!" Arienne said shakily. "We're all here now…"
Eira stirred, and tentatively opened her eyes, looking at the group through tears. Cadell threw his arms around her and hugged her tightly. The rest of the group hugged her, nearly in tears themselves.
"We're here… We won't leave." Rhiamon promised.
"We won't leave again." Rayne told her, as Tristian rocked her in his arms.
"They…they were here…" Eira murmured through sobs.
"Shush… You were dreaming." Cadell reassured her. "It's okay, we're here."
"I'll get her a drink." Rayne said, standing up to leave the room. Trunks, Pan and the others followed.
"What's wrong with her?" Gohan asked.
Rayne looked at him sternly. "It's not my place to say." She said.
"We understand." Gohan replied. "I'm just concerned."
"That's okay." Rayne smiled. "We all have skeletons I guess."
Rhiamon walked into the kitchen. "She's calmed down." He told Rayne. She sighed with relief.
"Maybe we shouldn't have came here." Rayne said wistfully, lifting her hand to her face, her eyes down.
"We had to." Rhiamon answered her softly. "So this didn't happen again."
Bulma appeared back in the room too. Her face was flushed with dried tears. "Why don't I give you that tour?" She said shakily, but with an effort to be cheerful. "It's hit us all...it's just difficult. We just need some time."
Rhiamon nodded. "We understand." He said bravely.

"I've got to say, this place rocks…" Tristian said between, and often overlapping, mouthfuls of burger.
"It's very pretty. Especially with all those cute dinosaurs." Eira gushed politely over the large dinner table. Rayne nodded beside her. Both of them looked so much like Bra, it was apparent they were her daughters.
For Pan and her two sons, Cadell and Tristian, they looked so much more like their fathers, her traits less noticeable. Her daughter Arienne however looked the double of her and Videl, with her sharp features from Vegeta.
"The dinner is lovely." Arienne said. The other youths agreed as they finished. They took their plates to help clear the table as everyone gradually finished too. They took their plates into the kitchen, and Tristian noticed the remainder of the food packets on the bench from the new home delivery a couple of hours before from the supermarket. Bulma was far too busy to shop for food herself, she was busy on her inventions most of the time. And… well, relaxing.
Tristian picked up a can off the bench. He gave a light chuckle. "GM free." Tristian read. He grinned. "It's not one of your buddies." He joked as he tossed the can to Eira.
Eira made a face. "Haha, funny..." She said with dripping sarcasm.
"What do you mean?" Trunks asked with curiosity as he set the dishwasher on. His niece blushed.
"Genetically modified." Eira said. "A GM Saiyan, I suppose." She shifted against the sink and folded her arms.
"G…M…Saiyan?" Goten spluttered, his eyes wide.
Gohan looked at her with surprise and fear. "What do you mean by that?" he asked quickly, standing up.
Eira flexed her arm, watching it, then curled her hand. "The scientists on Dargon thought it would be a whole lotta laughs to mess with a Saiyan's Genetic material." She said quietly. "I guess I was just the lucky dip."
The others looked solemn. "What did they do to you?" Gohan asked, his face pale.
"Experiments mostly. How much we could withstand, what weakened us, that kind of thing." Eira re told. "They wanted to harness my energy, and they managed to convert it to different forms." As she spoke, she uncurled her hand. The others nearly fell over as spot lightning sprang from her hand. It kept in contact with her hand, and traveled to the ground, snapping and flashing. She closed her hand again, and the electricity died down. "They did a lot of experiments with lightning rods and electricity…" She explained. "It was…painful, to say the least."
"That sounds so bad…" Bra said sadly to her daughter.
"She's a real live wire, right babe?" Tristian joked over the deathly seriousness of the situation. However, he seemed to be the only one who stayed light-hearted. In all the shock of hearing just what had happened to the Saiyans in the future timeline, they hadn't fully realised what the youths may have had to live with.
"She still has nightmares." Rhiamon said. "That's what happened before." Eira didn't respond, but she snuggled against Rhiamon and he hugged her protectively.
"Listen, it's getting late." Arienne said, excusing the conversation. "I think we're all tired. You can hear the rest of the story once we're rested up."
"That's sensible." Bulma agreed. "I guess you guys have no place to stay, huh?"
"We were hoping…I guess, if it was ok…" Rhiamon said nervously. "If we could crash here for a while?"
Bulma smiled. "Of course. You are family... even if not yet in this time."
"If we can, we'll stop it from ever being in this time." Arienne said determinedly.
After a silence, Bulma spoke again. "We have plenty of spare rooms, follow me." She said to the youths. They were all assigned separate rooms, much to their surprise. But by then they had seen the sheer size of the Corp, and realised that Bulma had more rooms to spare than she knew what to do with.
The Z gang took to the guest rooms too. They couldn't leave. Not when this had happened. The sky soon became black as night and the Corp was peaceful under its velvety darkness.

Cadell sat out on his own, unable to sleep just yet. He adjusted his shoulder strap, and sat on the cold tiles of the roof. A faint breeze blew in the night air, and it moved strands of his hair gently about. He crossed his legs, as if he was meditating with his mentor again. His fingers fiddled gently with the chain of the locket. He unfastened the clasp and held it in his hands. He tentatively opened it, and gazed in wonder at the two faces. His finger trailed down her face, and felt the soft strands of dark hair next to it. In the opposite frame, held another face, with a clipping of hair so much like his own. The moonlight shone palely down on his hands, and glinted on the precious metal of the locket. He hesitated for a moment, before reluctantly closing it and fastening it back around his neck. He shivered softly, barely feeling the bitter cold, so like the night watches of before. Sleep finally claimed him, and as he lay back on the roof under the navy blanket of stars, he began to dream...
"Mummy?" Asked the small boy. Pan smiled down at him.
"Come here, sweetheart." She beckoned. He walked to her, and she hugged him tightly.
"What is it, Mummy?" He asked as he pulled away. Pan stroked his lavender hair aside. He was Trunks all over again, she thought with a smile.
"Cadell, I want you to know that I love you very much." She said softly. "Your Daddy would have been proud of you, I know it."
Cadell looked at her with confusion. "…I love you." He said tentatively, worried by the way she was acting. He hugged her again, his small hands clinging to her tightly. He lay his head in her lap. He began to yawn.
"Shush…" Pan soothed, her hands stroking his hair reassuringly. "You just go to sleep now."
"Ok…" Cadell murmured, safe in the comfort of her presence. His breathing became heavier, and before he drifted off, he felt his mother fasten something gently around his neck, and her warm kiss on his forehead.
The young boy awoke with a start at a loud noise. He jolted up, and felt his hands and body pressing on the cold floor of the cell. He scrambled up, to find he was all alone. He looked around in distress and confusion. "Mummy?" He asked. "…Mummy?" His heart leapt in his chest, as the sobs raked through his small body. He fell to the floor once again and cried. Grief over took him, and he lay back on the hard floor. Through blurry eyes, he saw something glint in front of him. As he carefully lifted his head, the object moved with him. He sat up, and fingered a small silver locket hung around his neck. He opened the locket, and stared in amazement at the two faces there. He moved back against a wall, and stared at the images with intent and fascination. He closed it again, and clutched it in his chubby hands, holding it close to him. The only piece of her he had left...

Rayne blinked in the sunlight of the early morning, and she opened the skylight leading to the roof. She climbed up, and pulled herself on to the tiles. She breathed in the invigorating air, and looked around her. She saw him lying there, his eyes closed, and deep in the recesses of sleep. She crawled slowly over to him, and sat beside him. He turned in his sleep with her presence, and placed his head on her lap. His hand reached out to clutch her dress with a child like needing. Rayne sat still and let him sleep. She had inherited that peaceful protective nature from her father, Goku. As she sat there, her fingers gently ran through his hair. She stared off into the horizon dreamily, and a contented smile formed slowly onto Cadell's lips.
