Chapter 1- The Gauntlet is Thrown Down
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Vegeta, have you heard about the newest hot shot on the street?" Kakarot stared at his older friend for a moment and stretched himself out on the old sofa that was situated in the garage. "No one knows much about him except he goes by the name of…"
"Kakarot, this…boy is nothing until he can win against me. He hasn't shown his ass around here so he must be afraid of me." Vegeta seemed to continue his cocky statement with a smirk.
Vegeta shook his head silently and looked over towards the car they had been working on. "Yeah, well, even if Ice is afraid of you, if you don't get this car in working order, he won't even have to race you. All he'd have to do is challenge you and you'd have to forfeit."
Vegeta looked at the car. The engine was ripped out of it and sitting beside the driver side door in tiny pieces. "Your harpy knows where this Ice is, doesn't she?" He waited for the younger man to nod. "Good, have her send word to him that I want to race him…this weekend at a place of his choosing."
As if she had heard what Vegeta had said, Chichi walked in and smiled at her boyfriend, Kakarot. "Hey guys, what's going on?" She strolled over to the sofa that Kakarot was sitting on and sat beside him. "What were you two talking about?"
Huffing softly, Vegeta answered her, begrudgingly. "Harpy, you know Ice right?" Chichi nodded slightly, wondering where this was going. "I want to have a race against Ice. I need you to set it up, will you?"
Chichi didn't answer, but she did pull out her cell phone. Dialing a number, she waited a moment before speaking. "Hey Ice, how're you? Great, listen, what are you doing this Friday night?" There was a moment of silence before she continued. "Yeah, I got someone here that wants to race. Where, I don't know, hold on." She looked at Vegeta and he shrugged, he didn't care. "Anywhere you want. Thirty-second and Oak…that's a good choice. We'll see you there at 11. You know which car to bring. Later."
Hanging up the phone, she looked at Vegeta smugly and smiled. "You officially have a race. Shall I spread the word?"
Vegeta waved his hand dismissively and walked over to the engine sitting on the floor. "Great, do what you want. I need to get this car done. I don't have forever to do this."
"Vegeta, why didn't you collect that debt from Broly? You could've gotten new equipment and you would've had that car done in no time." Vegeta glared at Kakarot after his innocent question. He hated when he pointed out his nice moments
"Broly didn't have the funds. We made a deal. I don't break his knee caps and he gives me a 9 second car. I could always use a back up." The look on his face told him that it was the end of the discussion.
Chichi kissed Kakarot softly before she got up to leave. "I need to go tell some people about the race. They'll make sure that people show up. Good luck with the car…I think you'll need it."
Friday came quickly. Vegeta got his car put back together and had it repainted. The car was now jet black with a red dragon on the hood. The Mitsubishi wasn't quite a 9 second car, but it was as close as he could make it.
Chichi had gotten the word out and at 10:57, people were lining up for the race. Vegeta was leaning against his car, waiting, when a car pulled up beside him. The Mitsubishi Spyder was painted black, much like Vegeta's, but it had ice blue flames on the hood that spelled out "Ice Ice Baby". Smiling, Vegeta hopped into his car and started it up. The other car revved its engine as they waited. Chichi walked over to Ice's car and collected the money to be placed on the bet as Kakarot went over to get Vegeta's.
Vegeta rolled down his window and gave him the money. "Have you heard anything about this guy?" He looked over to the other car and scowled at the tinted windows. "I don't even know what this guy is like."
Kakarot just shook his head. "I've pumped Chi for information and all I can tell is that the guy has a son…I think." His face crumpled into a look of pure confusion. Vegeta just rolled his eyes and closed his window.
Chichi gave Ice's bet to Kakarot and stood between the tow cars. "Drivers, are you ready?" Both cars revved their engines. Chi raised her arms with a flag in her hand. "Go!" She dropped both of her arms as the cars took off as quick as possible.
The cars started off equal but by the first turn, Ice's car had pulled slightly ahead. Neither one of them wanted to use their boosts until the last moment. Vegeta growled and shifted gears, pulling away from her.
As they were coming around the second turn, they pulled up next to each other. Vegeta looked over and decided to play dirty. He swerved over and hit the other car, trying to force it off of the road. Ice had to slow down to regain control and he pulled ahead. Ice growled and looked down at the instrument panel. At 105, the car was starting to overheat. Something had to be done.
Looking ahead of them, Vegeta noticed that the draw bridge was up and a boat was passing underneath it. Ice noticed it as well. Punching the nos button, Ice pulled ahead of Vegeta effortlessly. Growling, he pushed his nos as well and jumped the bridge at the same time.
As they landed, Vegeta landed first, and Ice's car landed with its back tires on his hood. Vegeta's engine came through the bottom of the car and hit the ground, leaving him stranded. Ice had only superficial damage and drove safely to the stop line.
Amongst the cheering, there was also stunned silence. Looking back at Vegeta's car and the look on his face as he exited the vehicle, Ice called Chi over to the car. A small hand reached out, took the money that it had placed there, but left Vegeta's. Chi leaned into the car and had a small conversation with the driver.
As soon as she moved away from the car, the car took off with a screech of tires. Kakarot walked over to her and wrapped his arm around her shoulders. "How about we go diffuse the situation with Vegeta?"
Chichi nodded as they started to walk over to the car. A string of explicatives was flowing from Vegeta's mouth as he studied the damage to his steaming junk heap that used to be a car. Chi braved his wrath for a moment and touched his shoulder to gain his attention. When he looked towards her, she returned his bet, much to his confusion. "I was told to tell you to bring your car to Ice's shop and it will be fixed, free of charge. Ice felt horrible."
She gave Kakarot another quick kiss before she left. Vegeta just looked at him with the same look of confusion. He wasn't sure how to respond to this generosity, but he would most likely take it.
