Goku the Monkey King

Part 1

Notes: The Gohan used in this fic is the one that found and raised Goku, not Goku's son. With the exception of the "Z/GT only" characters, everyone else is as they were back in the original DB series.

Narrator: Ok everybody! Places! Let's get this rendition of "The Legend of the Monkey King" under way!

Goku: "The Monkey King?" I thought we were doing that "Journey to the West" thing!

Narrator: We are, Goku, we are. It's just that "Journey to the West" is often called "The Legend of the Monkey King" too!

Goku: Why give it two names? Isn't one enough?

Narrator: Look, Goku, I wasn't the one who gave the story its two names. Now let's get on with the show already! Hey! Where's Son Gohan?

Son Gohan: Right here, ma'am.

Narrator: (checks something off on her clipboard) Cool. You won't be on until a little ways into the story, so you can hang backstage until then.

Gohan: (heads backstage) Very well. I'll have myself some tea in the meantime.

Narrator: (scans her list) Ok... now where are the other monkeys?

Goku: They're backstage with Grandpa. I told them to sit still until you told me to give them the signal to act.

Narrator: (checks off her list) Check... and... next on the scene we're gonna need the Dragon King of the Western Ocean... who's playing his part?

King Kai: That would be me!

Goku: Who are you?

King Kai: Someone you won't meet until much later in life, but that's a different story!

Goku: Oh... ok... hey, if I'm supposed to meet you when I'm older, how come I'm meeting you now?

King Kai: (whispers to Goku) Because the director is crazy and doesn't know what she's doing. (gets hit in the head with a mallet)

Narrator: (clears her throat) As I was SAYING, King Kai, you'll be the next one on the stage, so just wait for your cue and we'll be all set.

King Kai: (grumbles, rubs his sore head, and heads backstage)

Narrator: (checks off her list) Ok...Next, we're gonna need the King of Death. King Yemma? (looks around) Where's King Yemma?

King Yemma: (comes out of the bathroom, zipping up his pants) Uh... right here!

Narrator: Cool. (checks off her list) And finally... we're gonna need the Jade Emperor of Heaven and Erh-Lang. Playing those parts will be... (reads her papers) Kami and Piccolo.

Piccolo: (levitating near the ceiling) Hmph! I can't believe I'm getting dragged into this stupid-

Narrator: Piccolo! Get down here!

Piccolo: (lands softly) What?

Narrator: We're getting ready to go on. Get backstage and wait for your cue.

Piccolo: (goes backstage, grumbling)

Kami: You wanted to see me?

Narrator: I'm just doing a role-call. (checks off her list) Alrighty, you can head backstage now.

Kami: (goes backstage)

Narrator: I'm gonna need Pigsy, Sandy, and Monk Tang out here. Where are they?

Oolong: I'm right here!

Yamcha: Oh come on! Why do I gotta be Sandy the water monster?

Bulma: (twirling around in fancy monk clothes) Because I have to play one of the big, important parts, Yamcha! Besides, you'd make a lousy monk!

Yamcha: Come on! Monk Tang was a GUY! Why can't I play his part?

Narrator: Because you're the desert bandit and that's what Sandy was! Also, Bulma's the one that started the 'journey' for the Dragon Balls, which is why she is leading the 'journey' in the story.

Yamcha: (grumbling) Damn it.....why do I always get the crappy parts.... stupid director... (gets hit in the back of the head with a frying pan) OW!

Narrator: (grins) Alrighty! Everyone's here and accounted for, so let's get this show on the road!

Goku: On the road? I thought we were gonna do it right here in the theater!

Narrator: (sweatdrops) Yes, Goku... we're doing it here in the theater. Getting the show on the road is just an expression. Now get into position already!

Goku: Ok, ok...

As many of you may or may not know, Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball series was both inspired and based on the old Chinese novel "The Journey to the West," which is better known as the legend of the Monkey King. What I'm doing is basically putting the inspired characters back into the roles that inspired them. I hope you guys/gals like it! The more reviews I get, the faster I'll write it! But mind you, finding resources and information on the original novel is VERY difficult, and so I ask that if I've missed anything important, please don't flame me! I also want to take this time to thank everyone who corrected me on little errors here and there. Your help is VERY much appreciated!
