Setting: Earth| Time: Present
Dead Pigeon and Other...Things
***************************Six Months Later******************************
I was out with my herd of goats that I tended and raised to supplement our
food supply. Along with them I had a couple of cattle with small flocks of
geese, chickens, peacocks, and pigeon's. All which contributed to our
survival. We were a poor family. Most of the animals we obtained was by
trading and the cattle were gotten when I had a windfall of money from my
disabilty. Fortunatly there was a local hay farmer who always gave us price
breaks. With me in the yard was Haakon, Frigga, and Freya. Haakon had
recovered with in the first week of his arrival. He astounded us with his
strength, advanced physical, and mental skills. Though his speech
development "seemed" on par with human children his dexterity, ablity to
walk, run, and jump were on par with a human child of around 5 years-of-age
or better. His senses were apparently far more developed than a humans as he
was able to scent and track a mouse we had in our house one evening a week or
so ago. It was quite a shocker when he swiftly darted from the couch and
pounched on the unsuspecting rodent. It sqeaked once before he crushed it,
then to my utter astonishment ATE IT! Cripes I went through the roof at
first till I calmed myself and realized that if he could do that then he MUST
be able to eat raw meat as well as cooked. I never told anyone about that
since he never developed any negative side effects from the strange meal.
That wasn't the only unorthidox snack my little son had. The problem had
presented itself the second week of his life with us when he ate all of
Frigga's large gold fish right out of the tanks. Oh Frigga was so mad at
him. I assured her once we could get him to understand NOT to eat her fish
we would get her more. This assured her but I was not sure it would be easy
to teach my son to ignore his hunting instincts just yet. It seemed that
anything HE deemed edible was. I realized that I would have to wait till he
could understand better. For now I watched him as he kept a close eye on the
pigeons that flew above us every so often. He did this almost every time we
were in the goat yard since he recovered. I then noticed he deepened into a
crouch while his tail swished like a cat that was ready to pounce. When
another plump fowl went over head he lept straight up, snatched the startled
bird, and landed with a soft puff in the sandy groud of the goat yard. He
dispatched it with a swift bite to the back of the neck just like a cat
would. He crowed triumphantly as he sat back and looked at his kill a moment
then beamed at me. (Ô.Ô) I was startled but not entirely surprised as I
smiled at him approvingly. His body language was clear to me as he turned
his attention back to the bird to try and figure out just how to start on his
meal. "Your not going to let him eat that raw are you?" Freya asked in an
astonished tone. "Well not with the feathers at least." I replied calmly as
I made my decission. "Here Haakon, let Mamma get those nasty tastless
feathers off for you." I offered as I reached for the dead bird. He made no
move to stop me, trusting that I was not taking it away from him entirely.
He watched with great intrest as I cleaned the bird of its plumage. His eyes
lit up when I handed the now fully plucked bird. I didn't think he'd wait
long enough for me to gut it first. I was right, for the moment I handed him
the featherless carcass he tore right into it devouring every little morsel
bone and all. "YUK! That's gross." Frigga stated as she watched her little
brother eat. "Yeah he looks like the wolves do when they catch a pigeon."
Freya commented back. It sort of weirded me out too but I was determined to
let him follow his instincts as much as possible as I believed this would
help him grow and develop properly. He knew what his body needed even more
than I could guess. I also knew that raw meat had nutrients that were lost
when cooked and that since it seemed his people COULD eat raw meat it was
likely that they NEEDED to eat it from time to time to sustain proper body
functions. The only thing out side of the feathers that was left of the
pigeon was its two bright red feet and beak. "Oh look it took off soooo
fast it's feet flew off from the g-forces." Freya said while making the
disembodied feet dance while humming the original Dragon Ball© theme song.
Haakon and Frigga laughed at their big sisters silly if not slightly macabe
performance. I too had to smile, leave it to Freya to come up with something
like that. I then took Haakon over to the hose to wash off the blood and
gore. "Well I think it's time I give you some lunch before you catch all the
pidgeons my son." I said to Haakon. He looked at me questioningly. "You
want to eat food?" I asked, knowing he already understood the words "eat"
and "food". Sure enough his little eyes lit up with anticipation. He hopped
nimbly on to my hip and we left the goat yard followed closely by Frigga and
Freya. As always he insisted on nursing first before eating solid foods
*pigeon appetizer excluded of course*. He started to play with my face
playing with my face piercings. "Hey don't pull so hard on mamma's labret."
(A/N: In case you didn't know "labret" is lip piercing) I warned as he pulled
on it just a little too hard. Once I finished nursing him I set to making
his, the girls, and my own meal while Freya and Frigga kept him occupied.
Soon we were all enjoying a good lunch. "Oh look....Buddah belly." Freya
sang as she pointed to Haakon's VERY full belly which stuck out slightly.
She then began to lightly rub his full tummy. I smirked when she was
rewarded with a huge belch followed by him giggling as she started tickling
him. Since it was a very warm October day in the Arizona desert we called
our home I took Frigga and Haakon out to the wading pool I had bought the
begining of Summer. "Keeee!" Haakon cried with glee as he made to hop off
my hip so he could jump into the waiting water. "Hold on a second there
bratski, let me get your diaper off first." I said as I quickly removed his
diaper. No sooner done he was off and into the pool. Frigga was right
behind him after Freya had changed her into a bathing suit. Freya and I sat
back under one of our palo verde trees to keep an eye on the playing
children.
******************************* Haakon **********************************
*SWHISH!* *SWHISH!* His tail moved side to side, now he was in his element.
He was the preditor and the fat flying birds prey. His mother had diligently
brought him out to where he could indulge his instinctive need to hunt. Up
until now he would just watch and study. He'd even watch the orange thing
his mother called a "cat" jump and catch smaller birds before. This time he
was ready though, his heart began to beat faster as he deepened his crouch.
His tiny muscles charged with an electrical type feeling as his senses
reached their peak. *SWHISH!* *SWHISH!* His blood sang as his target came
into view. Working on primal instincts honed by ages of evolution he sprang
to the air clasping his prey tightly stunning it. Once on the ground the
terrified bird began to struggle which prompted a quick decisive bite below
the head just as he'd seen the "cat" do. It jerked twice more before dieing
completely. His acomplishment filled his wild heart joysly causing him to
throw back his head and howl with pride. He then looked to his mother for
his due reward of her approval. Her smile was all he needed, he had done
well and he knew it. As he looked back down at his kill he pondered on just
how to eat his food. His mother as always was ready with a solution. She
spoke to him in a tone that told him so. Curiosity and anticipation coursed
through him as he watched his mother take the bird and began to take off the
outer layer. That was fine with him they weren't very tasty looking. When
she handed it back to him it did indeed look A LOT more tasty than before.
With out hesitation he set upon his first kill. When he finished his bird he
laughed as he watched his eldest sister did silly things with the birds feet.
His mother then nicely washed the blood off of him while speaking to him. He
recognised a few of the words she spoke. He even practiced them in his head
to speak them when he was ready. This time she was going to give him a meal
and boy was he ready for it. The bird had been a appetizer and he was ready
for the main course. He hopped easly onto her hip and road it to the place
where she made and they ate the food. Once inside she settled down on one of
the chairs and offered him her breast. As he suckled steadly of her mother's
milk he played with the shiny objects that adorned her face. As he pulled a
little harder than normal on the lower shiny object, she gave him a verbal
warning that he was hurting her. He complied readily as he learned his
limits with her. When she was done nursing him his two sisters entertained
him by winding up his fuzzy, buzzy toy (A/N: yes a toy wind-up mouse.) and
setting it loose on the floor. Oh yes, this is how he learned to catch those
tasty little treats. He truly loved this pounching game and it made time
pass swiftly helping not think of his still hungry tummy. His mother soon
remedied this as well as she fed him all he could eat of the tasty food she'd
prepared. His eldest sister said something in a playful tone while rubbing
his very full belly. That was helpful as he felt a lot better after he
burped. He giggled as she began to tickle him lightly. Soon after his
mother took him out to the water he played in with his sister. He loved to
play in the water it helped cool him and the sensation on being in water
appealed to him. Anxiously he tried to hop off his mother's hip, but was
foiled till she freed him of his diaper. He then happily splashed in the
water. Life was definitely good now.
********************************* Reginleif ******************************
It was nice to have Freya around all the time now that school was out. It
made caring for my extreamly active son so much easier. I wasn't too upset
about his spryness since keeping up with him helped me get back into shape
quicker. Though it did play havoc with my arthritis. Even so I still
couldn't go to town. Haakon never leaves my side and he growls and hisses at
people who were not "family". This happend the first time we took him to
town and we decided to wait till he was older when he could understand better
to socialize him.
One thing that still bothered me. Even though Kirkjbur figured no one would
come for him. I had one of my "feelings" that someone might. Almost every
night I'd sense a strangeness. Like a presence that was...seeking. It had
a male signature to it and felt very far away. I wondered if it was one of
Haakon's relatives or just a new entity that was trying to communicate with
me. If it was one of Haakon's relatives then that paticular individual was
pretty damn powerful at astral projecting or something akin to it. If it was
a new entity then I would find out it's intent soon enough. While I pondered
this Freya interrupted me. "Do you think someone is ever going to come
looking for him?" Freya asked suddenly. I was startled that she was
thinking along similar lines. I felt a cold hand grip my gut at the thought
of loosing him. I set aside this feeling though to actually consider her
question using my psychic capabilities to "see" the possiblity. I sent out
my feelings but came up inconclusive, I shrugged. "I need my runes, I can't
focus objectivly enough with my vision alone." I replied. "Want me to get
them?" She queried. I nodded my head and she left to retrieve my runes. I
have been a working Shaman since I was 19 years of age. I had always been
able to see the future with my precognative vision then later more clearly
with my runes. I also could do many other things that I had been called
apon to do for my kindred or others. I had done everything from seeing the
future to exorcising evil spirits to speaking with the dead, to channeling
God foces. For me it was a strange world I lived in from day to day. Since
childhood I had ever existed between the world of men and the worlds of
spirits and entities. I didn't understand as a child that the "nice helpful
voices" were actually the voices of the many deities that existed. They had
ALWAYS treated me as like one of their own, that is like family. I figured
that was one reason that I had survied what my counsiler called a horrific,
nightmareish, life of being raped almost daily, beaten, demeined, and forced
into child prostitution by my father. Myself the result of him raping his
eldest daughter...my mother. His wrong doing but he chose me to pay for it.
As to my grandmother his wife. She took on the role of the one to break and
"punish" me. Mentally and emotionally torturing me regularly till to the
outside world I seemed unstable or at least a imaginative, hysterical little
girl that could not be trusted and acted strange. They could not see the
tourtured child that could see the future and heal with a touch, yet had no
self esteem and desperatly wanted some kind adult to save her. But no one
came, relentlessly she continued to try and mold me in their own sick and
twisted image. But I refused to be like them. Inspite my grandmother's
"best" efforts I kept true to myself believeing in the good in humankind and
wishing to help others with my "gifts". My inner spirit remaining
uncorrupted by their ploys. Most "ordinary" folks get freaked out by me
because of all my unusual capabilities and mannerisms. Even Kirkjbur had
said on more than one occassion that he believed I was not "entirly" human.
He said I seemed more like a ancient entity with amnesia or something.
Knowing all these esoteric crafts and things. Yet I had NEVER been taught by
any corporeal being. All my knowlege seemed to already be in my head, just
waiting to be remembered. Or one of my "God" friends would offer me a lesson
in my dreams. Now swiftly approching 40 years of age my skills were sharply
honed. Even so I knew that I was so close to the question being asked it
would take all my skill to push aside my own feelings and "see" properly.
Freya soon returned with my runes. I sat on the ground liking the vibrations
the Earth sent to me. I asked Freya's question to the runes as my hand mixed
the 24 antler runes till I felt that strange trance feeling I get when I tap
into any of my gifts. As if my hand had a will of it's own I grasped the
first three runes setting them into a triangle formation. Raiðo was the
first rune, the rune of physical journies. It was in it's straight most
position. The next rune was an inverted Berkano the rune of the Goddesses and
Earth. The third of the first set was fully upright Othalla rune of family.
It read that someone not of this world would journey in serch of a family
member. Since I had the "feeling" about it being a male concluded so. I
continued to the next set. The first of the second triad was an upright
Nauðiz the rune of need. The next was a strait up Dagaz the rune of balance.
The third was the rune of Mannaz the rune of mankind and soul mates. I
understood this to mean that the one who journied from far away to seek a
family member needed to also find balance and either humanity or true love.
I continued to the final three, the result of the other two. The first rune
was an up right Jera rune of completion and cycles. The second was a strait
up Wunjo rune of wishes and joy. The final one was Perthro rune of Ørlög or
destiny/fate. This ment that the out come would bring completion, joy and
was fated. It would happen no matter what. I felt a coldness in my belly as
my runes spelled it out clear. One of his family, likely a male would
actually come seeking Haakon out finding what they needed to become complete
and know joy and this was fated. "Yes Freya, someone WILL come looking for
him." "When I don't know, but it shall be inevitable since it's fated it is
part of destiny." I told her. I was unaware that tears were coming down my
face. This was a destiny I didn't want to face. I didn't want to loose my
son a second time. Freya put a comforting hand on my shoulder which gave me
the strenght to give myself a mental shake. I had to get a hold of myself
and live in the now. As I stated I didn't know WHEN they would find him
here. I only knew that they would. For all I knew now Haakon would be a all
grown up man by then, or they COULD come next week. Some things about the
future were harder to see. For now I had him so for now I would love, care
and enjoy him as if he'd be gone tomorrow till that day did come. So what's
gonna happen to you?" Freya asked. I looked at her curiously cocking my
head to one side. Only then becoming aware that my face was wet. I wiped
the tears from my face. "I mean what will happen to you as result of this?"
She said reforming her question. I shrugged and gathered up the runes from
the first reading, placed them back into my pouch, and shook it vigorously.
I then placed my hand into the bag and began to trance again. The first rune
that appeared was Gebo rune of gifts. The second was Ansuz strait up, the
rune of all Gods. The third was Berkano up right, rune of Goddesses and
Earth. It read a gift from the Gods and Goddesses. I set out the next
three. The first was up right Eiwaz rune of ultimate protection from all
harmful evil things on ALL levels as well as the tree of life. The next was
a strait up Uruz, rune of strength and health. The third was up right Laguz,
rune of new beginings. Thus far meaning the Gods and Goddesses were going to
give me the gift of protection, strenth and good health, and lead me to a new
life. I fore stalled my own assumption of meaning a life with out Haakon.
Instead I set out the final three. The first was Elhaz, rune of Valkiries,
protection, and life. The next was Ingwaz, rune of power. The final was
Perthro again indicating it was once again fated. All of the third set were
in their up right possition. The last part meaning I was also to recieve the
gift of life as well as power as is fated to happen. I told Freya of the
results. As I straightened up one rune seemed to leep out of the bag and
landed at the very end of the spread. I looked it was the rune Mannaz
straight up, rune of mankind and soulmates. I knew from experience that when
runes "jumped out" on their own it ment it was to be with the reading as
well. I furrowed my brow. Did this mean that a partnership of a sort would
be forged? Or that the gifts that the Gods and Goddesses were to give me
were to be used to help mankind? It couldn't mean "soulmate" since I was
already with my Kirkjbur...could it? I shook my head mentally rejecting the
third. I could not decide to I told her the two possiblities. She nodded as
she looked at the spread with her head cocked to one side with a thoughtful
look. I had been teaching Freya a bit about the runes and their uses and
meanings. She was also being given lessons by a Hopi shaman friend of ours.
She too was gifted with the sight and sometimes she saw things I negelected
to see. "But Reginleif doesn't the Elhaz rune symbol in Hopi and Zuni mean
winged serpent or dragon as well?" I nodded and she contiued. "Maybe they
are going to give you DRAGON POWER along with all the other stuff to help
people." She replied. I shook my head from side to side in disagreement,
but I did conceide the possibility a few moments later. We were about to
speak more on this when Frigga came running over. "Mamma, Mamma, Haakon
caught another bird." She shouted. I got up and went over towards the pool
with Freya only a heart beat behind. Sure enough there was little Haakon
looking up at me while beaming with pride at his latest kill. This time it
was one of my roosters that liked to wander out of the livestock yard. I
knew one day he'd meet an untimely end, but I NEVER imagened it would be at
the hands and fangs of my baby boy. With a sigh I went over and plucked the
fowl for him. But it seemed he had hunted this one for later as he was still
full from the huge lunch (and pigeon) he had eaten only 30 minutes ago; as he
made no move to take the plucked bird from my proffered hand. I asked Freya
to watch the little ones for a few minutes while I went to gut the bird so he
could have it later. When I reached the gate the air was filled with a
distressed "AURUUUUU!" sound from Haakon. I was not surprised to feel him
climb on my back and hang on to my shoulders with tiny though powerful hands.
Ever since he came to me he never let me out of his sight, perfering to ride
on my hip or as he was doing now. He made scolding sounds at me for even
thinking of leaving him behind. Even if it was just 150 yards away in the
kitchen trailer. I turned my head towards him and smiled to him as much as
to myself. "Yeah I know...but I thought you might have wanted to play in the
pool a while longer." I replied to his scolding tones. He made a snorting
sound so much as if he was saying "humph" that I had to chuckle. I entered
the house and started my task. I left on the head opting to skin off the
fine feathers and removed the beak as he liked to eat every bit of the bird.
Very much like Kirkjbur that way. Kirkjbur had lived in times when he hadn't
food for days due to poverty. Thus he learned to waist nothing, including
anything that's edible. I never got use to that so I ate more "normally"
leaving such..."delicacies" to Kirkjbur and Haakon. After I finished I
noticed that Haakon was rubbing his eyes and acting very fussy, I knew it was
time for his nap. "Come on baby boy you need some rest." I said as I headed
back to my trailer. I called out to Freya who was still out at the pool with
her sister that I was going to put Haakon down for a nap. She acknowleged me
with a wave of her hand and a quick "O-Kay" before I resumed my walking. He
fussed a bit more till I got him in a new diaper and all snuggled up on the
couch with his favorite stuffed toy, a huge white tiger I had won at the fair
last March. Frigga had come in to watch some cartoon videos while Freya came
in to watch Haakon while I went to start up supper for everyone tonight. I
had to wait till I was "absolutely" sure he was in a deep sleep before I left
to save me another "scolding".
I love to cook, bake, and everything. I had been taught at an early age and
by 13 I could cook just about anything. For me cooking was a good way to
relax. Kirkjbur had come into the kitchen and saw me preparing the chicken
that Haakon had caught earlier. "Say, when did you kill the chicken?" He
asked curiously. I was so into what I was doing I didn't think when I
answered. "I didn't Haakon did." I answered (oh crud!). I winched inwardly
preparing myself for his retort. "HAAKON DID?" "HOW?" He demanded. "He
just jumped up caught it and broke it's neck...just like the pigeon." I
replied (DOH!). "PIGEON....I DON'T SEE A PIGEON." He insisted. His raised
voice was really starting to annoy me so I turned and gave him a stern look.
"That's because he had it for lunch." I said flatly. "YOU DIDN'T LET HIM
EAT IT RAW DID YOU?!!!" Kirkjbur hollered with panic in his voice. (Ô.Ô) I
just looked at him wide eyed. NEVER in all our 10 year marriage had I hid
anything from him nor had I EVER lied. "OF COURSE I COOKED IT FIRST, WHAT
KIND OF MOTHER DO YOU THINK I AM?" I shouted back with indignation (Oh my
Goddess I just lied to him...eek!). He nodded believeing my answer.
"Okay...fine, just make sure he doesn't eat ANYTHING raw....ESPECIALLY NOT
MICE." He barked as he left the kitchen to allow me peace while I cooked.
*SIGH!* Good thing he didn't ask me if Haakon HAD eaten a mouse. I don't
think I could lie to him twice. He nearly had a heart attack when he
finnally learned about the fate of Frigga's fish. If he wasn't so worried
that the doctor's would find out that our son was not human he would have
rushed Haakon to the hospital to have him checked for illness. We knew that
even IF they never saw his tail that his normal body temprature of 102° would
be the first suspicious thing they would find our about him. Naw I
DEFINITELY am going to NEVER tell Kirkjbur about the mouse incident. I put
in a large beef roast for the rest of the family in along with Haakon's
chicken. I had also added chuncks of carrots, potatoes, celery and onions
along with several whole garlic cloves. Like Kirkjbur, Haakon simply adored
vegetables if they are roasted in meat broth. The unique meat combination I
was cooking was sure to make for a taste treat for all. It had taken me only
30 minutes to accomplish the task and put it in the oven to cook. I went
back to check on Haakon, he still slept so I took the opportunity to do some
laundry. By the time I returned an hour later he was just stirring from his
nap. "Hey you." I said with a smile to Haakon as he opened his eyes and
smiled at me. "M-m-mamma!" He chirped happily out of the blue. (Ô.Ô) My
eyes flew open in total surprise. He was only six months old and he said his
first word. I shook my head in wonder at his never ending supply of
surprises. As he started to climb on me I smelled the distinct odor of a
diaper that needed changeing...NOW. "Hold on now you little rug rat." Let
me get you a new diaper on first before you sit on my hip, okay." I said as
I intercepted him and gave him to Freya while I went to the back of the
trailer to get Haakon a fresh diaper. As I retrieved the needed item I heard
Haakon make a peculiar sound followed by Freya and Frigga screaming
"EEEEEEWWWWWWWW!!!!!" "REGINLEIF, HE JUST ATE A MOUSE!" Freya screeched.
*SIGH!!!* "Here we go again." I muttered to myself.
(A/N: Yup, Reginleif should start a pest control business. That way she and Haakon could reduce the mouse population and get him free meals to boot. XD
I hope your likeing chibi's POV's. I thought it might add dimension to the story. Till next chapter take care all and stay safe.)

want to eat food?" I asked, knowing he already understood the words "eat"
Freya and I sat
back under one of our palo verde trees to keep an eye on the playing
children.

Till next chapter take care all and stay safe.)
;D
