Chapter 8
Written by: Severina

Bardock sat quietly on the couch staring at the room but not really seeing it. The golden glow, the turquoise eyes...the legendary. A Super Saiyan. He never thought he would live long enough to see the legendary with his own eyes, let alone be standing right next to him when he transformed. Let alone see his own son surpass royalty. He could still remember taking Kakarott's power reading before heading off to find his crew had been destroyed. It was nothing special; he was average for a third class warrior. And now he was the strongest warrior on the face of the planet, and most likely the universe.

He was stunned. He couldn't think straight. One part of him was still trying to grasp that he had just seen a Super Saiyan, the other half was still trying to fathom that the legendary was his own son. As all of this went through his mind, he could feel a realization tugging at his consciousness, something that he had to recognize something important that he couldn't think about right now. His mind was already overloading. He knew he'd have to fight for clear thought in a few seconds, he couldn't waste anymore time. But right now, there was too much to think about and none of it made any sense. He could feel Patara sitting beside him; also silent and lost in her own thoughts. They were both shocked.

"Hey are you guys ok? I'm really sorry about Bulma; she gets that way sometimes. But she's really a great person once you get passed her stubbornness." Goku said cheerfully. He wasn't sure why the two visitors were acting so strangely.

"Hey! I'm not stubborn-" Bulma began but a withering look from Goku was enough to make her stop. She had never once seen a look like that on his face, she knew that now was not the time. She knew that Goku appeared easy going and a bit stupid on the surface, but his instincts and judgement were unsurpassed. If he said not to push it then she had better listen.

"It's not the loudmouthed woman Kakarott...it's just that we can't believe you're a Super Saiyan." Patara said, her voice finally coming back to her. "It's mind boggling. There hasn't been a Super Saiyan for a thousand years and..." She stopped. She didn't know what else to say.

"How?" Bardock said when he was finally able to speak again. Goku looked at his father. He was a mirror image of himself. Even though he had never met him, he couldn't help but feel a strong desire to prove himself, to make his father proud.

"Well when we were on Namek-"

"Namek?" Bardock demanded.

"Yeah."

"Does Namek have green skies and blue grass?"

"Yeah why?" Goku was completely confused. He had gone from talking about becoming a Super Saiyan to the coloration on Namek?

"That's where you fought Frieza, that's what I saw," he said.

"That explains why your vision didn't match this place." Patara chimed in. "Now Kakarott, what happened when you became a Super Saiyan?"

"We were fighting Frieza on Namek. It was tough but we thought that we had finally destroyed him. Just as we were about to head back to the ship he reappeared and killed my friend Krillin. When I saw Krillin die, something just snapped in me and I became a Super Saiyan." The room was silent again as Patara and Bardock became immersed in their own thoughts. Suddenly, a light went off in Bardock's mind and he jumped to his feet. The thought that had been nagging at the back of his mind broke through.

"You defeated Frieza as a Super Saiyan. That's how you did it. There were no tricks, you didn't find a weakness in Frieza's defenses, you just surpassed him in strength."

"Something like that."

"Oh shit." Bardock said, his hands dropping to his sides. "Now what do we do?" he asked as he turned to Patara. Her face held an expression that was both bewildered and defeated. They were both at a loss. She shook her head slowly.

"Wait, what the hell is going on?" Bulma demanded. Goku looked at her as if he had forgotten she was in the room with them, which he probably had. Patara spoke before Goku opened his mouth.

"Bardock and I have traveled through time in search of Kakarott. We knew that he had defeated Frieza in the future and we wanted to learn how he did it so we could return to our own time and stop Frieza from destroying our planet and our race. I thought that he must have found a weakness in Frieza's defenses that he could tell us about, but I was wrong. There is no weakness, you can't teach us anything that will be helpful in our fight against Frieza. Our planet is still doomed." Her voice was flat as she said the last sentence. All her hope had diminished within a matter of minutes.

"Nothing is impossible! You can still defeat Frieza!" Goku said.

"How? By becoming Super Saiyans?" Bardock spat sarcastically.

"Yeah! All you have to do is train and go back to fight Frieza!" Goku was visibly excited by the thought of helping the Saiyans achieve their goal.

"Do you know how long that would take? Years! Even if we have a time machine, we can't stay out of our own time for years! What if the time machine didn't work the way we think it does and we arrive back on Vegetasei to find nothing but space dust? What good would our training do then?" Patara said, her voice beginning to rise. She had never felt so helpless and angry all at the same time.

"I can train you! It's no problem! In fact-"

"No!" came a disembodied voice into the room. "Goku, you can't take the time to train them."

"King Kai?" Goku asked, lifting his head to the ceiling of the room, as if looking up would enable him to hear the spirit voice better.

"Yes. You have to get back to your own training, or have you forgotten that the androids will be here in less than three years?"

"But King Kai-"

"No Goku. That lady Saiyan is right, what if their time machine doesn't work like it's supposed to? Then what? No if they are going to train here they need to do it as fast as they can...I've got it! Goku, bring the Saiyans to Kami's place. I'm sure he won't mind if they use the hyperbolic time chamber for two days."

"That's a great idea King Kai!" Goku said, grabbing Bardock's hand and throwing his arm around Patara before placing his fingers to his forehead and disappearing. Bulma gaped in shock at the place the three Saiyans had been standing less than a second ago. She really hated when they disappeared like that. Pulling herself back to reality, she remembered she had a few words to say to a certain arrogant Saiyan Prince. She headed to the gravity room.

Bardock and Patara stood outside the door to the hyperbolic time chamber. It had been explained to them as soon as they arrived on the lookout. And even though Bardock was a bit wary of being locked in a room that would age him two years in two days, he couldn't see the harm in it. If the training worked and he could achieve Super Saiyan, then it would all be worth it. He glanced at the Queen. He knew she was just as skeptical as he was, perhaps even more so. But they couldn't return to the past empty-handed. The entire future of their race was at stake and if that meant trusting the strange earthlings and their bizarre ways, then that was what they were going to do.

"Alright. I don't have all day." Patara said, nodding to Mr. Popo. He opened the door and they stepped inside.
