Chapter 13

Melody sat by her unconscious mother. "It's going to be alright mom." She whispered as her hand over her mother's pale one. "You're going to come through this just fine." But that was not what she was thinking. I have a brother. Why didn't mom tell me? I can hardly believe that this is happening. I want to see him and yet what would his fiancée think of me just walk in? Melody rose and looked at the nurse in her mother's room. "I am gong to go check on the donor." She worked to keep the tremor from her voice. "Could you watch over her for me?"

The woman nodded "They have him right down the hall actually not far. I think it is three doors to your left."

"Thank you." Melody bit her lower lip. This would the first time she ever set eyes on this half brother of hers. Would he look like her? She stepped into he hall and watched the machines being pushing to the other room. Was that a respiratory unit? Melody gasped. Maybe he wasn't doing as well as their mother was. The surgery was tricky. She ran to the door and saw the woman she had met in the hall earlier, Bulma, standing there with a miniature clone of herself. From the look of things it was not going well.

"Ummm Hello?" Melody announced her presence, but her eyes were for the man in the bed. He was a lot bigger then she thought he would be. Dark brown hair frames his pale face a way to pale.

Bra looked up "Who are you?"

Melody looked to Bulma who shook her head at her. Bulma patted her daughter's shoulder. "She is some one we met in the waiting room. Let me talk to her." Bulma made her way out of the room. "I am sorry to tell you this, things being as they are, but Mark is dying. My daughter is not taking it very well."

"He's dying!" Melody looked back into the room and saw Bra leaning over Mark and placing a gentle kiss to his lips and then speaking something no one could hear. "But. What is happening to him?"

"Several things. The most urgent one is currently the lost of blood." Bulma looked over at her daughter so tenderly watching over her dying lover. She sniffed trying to hold back the tears. She raised one hand to push them away, remembering she must be strong for Bra. "With the blood type they are in short supply."

Melody blinked, if her mother had not refused her help that could be her on that bed. Mark was in this situation because of her. "I know some one who can help him." She spoke quickly a faint trickle of hope in her voice.

Bulma looked up hopefully "Who."

"I can donate my blood. My mother's and I are the same. It a perfect match for what was needed for the operation, although, she refused to allow me, to attempt the procedure. So it only makes sense that Mark and I have the same type as well?"

Bulma grabbed Melody's arm and called to the doctor. Bra walked toward the door as well. Bulma didn't want Bra to find out about Melody's existence this way, but there was no time to soften it. Not when Mark's life was hanging so precariously in the air. "Doctor this is Gina Devero's daughter, Mark's sister. She has just told me she has the same blood type as Mark. This should be what you need to save his life?"

Bra looked in utter amazement. "Gina's daughter?" The words were oddly silent but raised in pitch, "GINA'S DAUGHTER?" Bra started laughing hysterically at the horror of it all. "Tell me this is some sort of cruel joke. Mark has no siblings."

Melody felt just as if she just crawled out from under a rock. The blue eyes fixed on her were storming with raging emotions. "None that he knew about."

"But that would means…" Bra looked at the image of Gina Devero with absolute loathing "She did this on purpose. Does your mother hate him so much? Why didn't she tell him?"

"BRA!" Mark's voice was earnest and drew everyone in halls attention to the door.

Bra paled and flew to his side. "What is it Mark, I am here."

"I think I am gong to be sick." He was damp with sweat. "Bra, there is something wrong. You don't have to lie to me. I can feel it now." His face contorted in pain. He tried to sit up and the nurse and doctor pushed him back down with help from Bra.

"Stay still Mr. Devero. It's the water we gave you." The doctor reached out and grabbed a basket for Mark. "You are losing a lot of blood Mr. Devero. You need to stay calm and remain still. Nurse, get his vitals again. I am going to take Ms. Sanders down to the lab and double check her blood type. Prep the room for a person-to-person transfusion."

"But doctor?" The nurse cried out.

"Damn it there is not time for the regular avenues. I am not going to stand by and let this man die for hospital procedures." The doctor moved out of the room with Melody firmly in tow.

Mean while another scheme to save Mark, was being hashed by Trunks. "DAD? You didn't happen to bring the senzu beans with you from Japan?" Trunks whispered in to the phone, his arm resting against the wall. He bent his head so that his fine lavender hair fell over his eyes. "Great get them over to the Hospital. Mark is taking a turn for the worse." Trunks sighed "Just bring Aiko with you, we need you here as soon as possible. No don't fly! Don't fly! She is to young for that."

"I could instant transmission to the town house?" Pan grabbed Trunks shoulder reminding her of the ability.

"No honey. Last time you tried it you were so drained. You would never be able to do the return trip. Let Vegeta do this." Trunks said, "NO, call a cab. DAD listen to me, have you ever ridden in an American taxi? Yes they are fast."

Melody pinched her face as the needle drove home. "Please lay back Miss. Sanders." She leaned slowly back, swallowing hard. Then looked eye to eye with her brother on the bed next to her make shift cot.

"I know you." Mark whispered. The strain of his voice made her heart lurch in her chest.

"Yes, we meet at the jewelers a day ago"

Mark nodded but it was hardly noticeable in his condition. "…fate…."

"Well at least now I know why you were getting the pendant." Melody never looked at Bra's shocked face. Melody refused to take her eyes from him. There were traces similarities between them. Insignificant on there own, but add them up and there was no denying this was her brother. How could she have missed it?

Mark closed his eyes and rested. He was fighting the dizzying light that threatens his conscious mind. He was drawling on strength he has never known just to remain awake. Only a bit more, if he could just hold on he would be. He had to live, for Bra. Looking at her face as she was now he knew she couldn't bare losing him like this? Hold on. He told himself.

Vegeta strode through the hospital, Aiko in one arm. He glared from person to person. The damn Taxi had been a nightmare. Who knew anyone could drive that fast. Yes, it was true he had told the man to hurry, but reliving his airplane experience did not seem so bad now. He will never admit that he had worried as Aiko giggled in glee at the swerving cab. Trunks looked up and saw Vegeta coming toward him. Tossing the bottle Vegeta snapped, "Here are your damn beans. That baka better live to thank me for this."

Pan rushed to Vegeta and took Aiko. She smiled hugging her precious baby. Everything would be fine now.

Trunks looked into the crowded room. He waved to get Bulma's attention. As she looked up he held up the bottle and Bulma brightened suddenly. "SENZU! I almost forgot about them." She rushed over and grappled with the cap. Dumping one into her hand she turned. "Here you go Bra."

Bra sighed in relief as she held the bean in her clinched fist. "Mark. Look what Trunks brought you."

Mark looked over at her hand "I don't know whom I love more? Him or the bean." He tried to laugh but he suddenly choked. Bra gasp in horror as the bright red showed.

Bra shoved the bean at him "Eat it Mark. Quickly" She pressed into his mouth and chews and he swallowed. Mere moments he vomited again. This time it was mostly blood.

His body reacted violently trembling.

"He is going on to shock. Get a Trauma team up here quickly!" The doctor yelled. Bulma and Trunks were pushed from the room.

Mark gasped for air. Melody sat up and began crying at the sight before her. Bra grabbed his hand. "MARK! MARK, hold on, baby."

"I can't… help it." Mark choked trying to form words. "Bra."

Bra felt the river of tears "Don't say it. Save your strength. We have more Sensu. It can save you. Just hold on."

Mark groaned in pain and the monitors started buzzing a beeping. Bra was barely aware of the doctor pushing her back "SOMEONE GIVE ME THE PADDLES. He is going to code on us."
