It Was Supposed to Be Forever

Chapter 7

By, Lady Valtaya

Vegeta forgot all about the gorgeous red head clinging to his arm when he had caught the barest hint of the scent of his mate when they got just outside the door of this restaurant, but the delicate human female refused to be dismissed, or pried off of his arm and he didn't have time to blast her to get rid of her. Testing the wind as the door of the restaurant was opened, he caught another scent too, definitely male near his mate and he growled low in his throat. How stupid did his mate think he was? This male was very close to his mate and very attracted to her, her scent was normal, her body didn't seem to be responding to this human's interest, but Vegeta wasn't willing to take any chances.

He had only left the minx yesterday, and that was because she had said she wanted him to. Saiyans mated for life, if she thought she could mate with someone else, she would find any rivals she brought before him killed. Even if she was going to be stubborn about this, Vegeta wasn't ready to give up on keeping her. She was his; she would always be drawn to him, just as he was to her. If she thought that she could dismiss him like she had Yamcha seven years ago, she was wrong. Vegeta growled, as he prowled inside, not even aware that Sapphra was still at his side.

Was this how she was trying to punish him for his so called betrayal? She wanted him to be jealous? She wanted to replace him, with a mere human? Seeing her sitting there at the table, she was smiling a moment ago, but Bulma was deathly pale and close to tears now. Sapphra tugged gently on his arm gently coaxing him into following the waiter to a table across the elegant dining room. Vegeta watched the features of his mate contort in pain, and felt a host of different emotions sweep through her. For his own heart seeing her sitting there with someone else hurt too, but it was the pain he saw in her eyes that he wanted to ease. He wished he could take her in his arms and hold her, but he couldn't.

The golden haired human sitting with her glaring at him made him snort in amusement. Didn't she realize that she was jealous of Sapphra because they were still bonded? Mates got angry and fought, with a race as stubborn and impetuous as Saiyans, it was inevitable. But the bond was there to ensure that these squabbles would not worsen, and that the two would always be drawn back together. For the better part of the year before their son was born, Vegeta had already tried to resist the bond, to convince his heart that he didn't need her, that she was nothing to him. Instead, all that had happened was he had become more certain that she was his destiny, and that nothing mattered beyond the way he felt for her. He had tried everything he could think of to rid himself of her, but finally, he had come back to her. She had beaten him, in a way that no one else would ever manage. The feisty human had power over him that no one else ever would. He couldn't wouldn't allow it to fall into anyone else's hands, just as he couldn't let her know then and he still couldn't admit his defeat.

Since he had never acknowledged his defeat, he knew Bulma didn't fully understand how strong their bond was, how much of himself he had really given her. It was tearing him apart to see the doubt and mistrust and fear that she had really lost him, this time. It hurt, even after all this time that he had put her through their long separation. It was the reason that she didn't fully trust him now. But it was also the reason he knew he could trust her. He knew it and he could only growl, frustrated with her and himself. She was only a human, how could she know that he had needed to leave her. He had to train, and he had thought she might understand that. He had needed to clear his mind, and focus on becoming a Super Saiyan, if he was really going to be mated, he had to know that he would be strong enough to protect her. Being so intimately connected to her, he knew her death would kill him

Of course he was feeling jealous and possessive of her too, but she was the one resisting it. He saw the confusion and pain in her azure eyes and watched her try to deny it even to herself. The whole situation was ridiculous, but Vegeta was still hurt and angry that she didn't trust him. After everything they had shared and all the compromise and the passionate nights he had spent with her, she thought he would throw it away? She would dare try to hurt him, make him jealous like they had done to Yamcha?

" Two can play this game, minx. " Vegeta purred into her thoughts. " You can fight it all you want, but you're still mine. That human will never know you like I do, he won't touch you the way I do. Do you think it will be so easy to forget you're still soul-bonded to me? If you want to try to make me jealous, go right ahead minx. Just remember, two can play that game. "

" V-vegeta… I wasn't trying to… I mean how could I know you were coming here? Wait a minute! Are you saying you followed me? You cheated on me first! And now you think I'm the guilty one? "

" I have already told you that nothing happened between Sapphra and I when you can accept that and trust me again, then I will forgive you. Until then consider yourself under suspicion as well. " He purred, sliding the mental barrier up once more, against Bulma's silent protest.

Vegeta settled into a comfortable chair across from Sapphra, which had a decent view of the rest of the restaurant and smirked over at his mate. " What do you keep looking at over there, Vegeta? " Sapphra asked quietly, and he realized she hadn't seen Bulma. True, he had been guarding his expression, but he had hardly taken his eyes off of his mate at all.

" Bulma, actually, she appears to be having a rather informal business lunch today. "

" Really? " Sapphra giggled, " It would be rude of me to stop you from going over to say hello to your girlfriend. I just can't thank you enough for saving my life, Vegeta. I could wait here, if you like. "

" Why don't we go over together? Bulma might not have noticed you either. I'm sure she'd like to say hello and introduce us to her lunch date. "

" Things might get a little awkward for you later if I don't tell her why you're with me too, I suppose. After all you've done, I would hate to get you in trouble. " The redhead giggled, and stood up, " Where is she? I didn't see her as we came in. "

" The table on the other side of the far glass patrician and the plants. "

" Oh, no wonder I missed them. I guess I'm lucky that you're so perceptive. "

Vegeta led her over to the table thinking a deaf human should've been able to hear that commotion that night, but he didn't say it. " I wasn't aware that you were so busy at work that you started having meetings on Saturdays again, Bulma. "

" Vegeta, " Bulma was so close to tears that she could hardly talk, but she managed a civil tone. " this is Brent Holden, he's been a friend of mine for a long time, we ran into each other at the mall, just a little while ago. Why Sapphra, what a surprise. "

Sapphra paled a little at the venom in Bulma's voice. " Yes, well, Vegeta and I bumped into each other, too, and he agreed to let me take him to lunch. It was the least I could do, after all, he saved my life. "

" What? " Bulma growled, he blue eyes full of hope and angry disbelief at the same time. To her surprise, Sapphra reached into her purse and pulled a newspaper clipping out of it. " I can't believe the two of you haven't seen this article, it's in all the papers this morning. "

" Well, I can't believe you'd dare to come over here after seeing the cover of The Satan City Expirer, yesterday. " Bulma growled. " Same goes for you, Vegeta. "

" What? What happened? " Sapphra gasped. " I never look at that stupid old magazine. "

" Well, you probably should, Sapphra, since you and Vegeta made the cover. Together, oh, but that's nothing compared to the pictures inside. I can't believe you Vegeta. I believed you, I trusted you when you said it was supposed to be forever. How dare you show up here, with her like this! "

" But Bulma, " Sapphra protested. " Nothing happened, he saved my life. I would never… "

" What? How can you expect me to believe that? You have been trying to get him in bed for the last 8 years! Don't give me that. I'm so sorry about this Brent. I've got to get out of here. " To her surprise, Vegeta let her move past him, but it was the look on his face that she would remember forever. He was smirking. "Vegeta… I know humans have always been a joke of some sort to you… but I never thought you'd take such delight in hurting me too. "

" You're doing this to yourself, minx, I told you, nothing happened. You're mine, Bulma and you can accept it or deny it but it changes nothing. You belong to me. Do you really think any human can take my place? Even Yamcha couldn't hold your interest; do you think this weakling can? You accuse me of betrayal, but yours seems greater to me. " Vegeta growled into her thoughts as she pushed the door open, she faltered a little and he wondered if she might turn around, but she didn't, and he felt her block his telepathy, as she walked out the door.

He snorted as he glanced at Sapphra and Brent, the human female looked as if she might cry and Vegeta started to take her back to their table. " I'm so sorry. " Sapphra whispered, " I had no idea that anyone thought you and I were… I've changed a lot since the last party where I behaved so poorly… Vegeta, you saved my life and… "

" My mate is stubborn and has had her heart broken before. She will be fine. "

" Yeah, as long as you stay away from her. " Brent growled, breaking his stony silence for the first time.

" Stay out of this you weakling. " Vegeta snapped. " She's mine in ways you couldn't possibly understand. It's her destiny she's fighting right now. "

" She's met guys like you before, is it her money or… "

" Shut up! " Vegeta interrupted, the golden flames of his aura surrounded him, summoned by the sheer force of his temper. Sapphra jumped away in surprise and Brent fell silent, remembering what Bulma had emphatically warned him about Vegeta being a man he didn't want to start a fight with. " I am nothing like that moron Yamcha! And I don't give a damn about her company or her possessions. "

" Well, " Sapphra tried desperately not to sound as scared as she felt. " I… It was nice to have met you, Brent. Uh, Vegeta? "

" What? " He growled, leveling two very dangerous looking aqua eyes at her.

Sapphra surprised him a little when she giggled nervously, and took a step closer. " Let's go sit down. I still owe you lunch, don't I? "

Vegeta snorted bitterly, watching the golden haired human leave the restaurant, after glaring at each other once more and dropped out of Super Saiyan. " Perhaps another time. "

Her soft hand gliding up his arm drew his attention back to her, and her jewel green eyes shimmered with mischief as she tossed her hair over her shoulder. " Are you sure? I'd really hate to think Bulma's little temper tantrum has to spoil everything. " Sapphra was beautiful, and by her scent, very willing. But even as he followed the seductive sway of her hips, he was thinking only of Bulma. She had left, and all he wanted was to hunt her down and claim her again. He swore under his breath, that thought always aroused him, but he knew it wasn't an option…yet. She had to fully accept him, because trying to seduce her this time would only confuse and hurt her more.

By nature he wasn't a patient man, he never had been, but where his blue haired little minx had been concerned, he had always managed to grant her time and space she had needed. First had come letting her get over her former mate, and all those times where he'd pissed her off, having to let her anger at him cool and to let her have the bed to herself, but this time it wasn't so easy. Whether or not it was because this time he was actually not at fault or because he really wanted her back that badly he wasn't sure, but whatever it was, he knew when he finally got his hands on her again… they wouldn't be leaving the bedroom for at least a few days. He'd have her begging him to stop every language she knew, and more before he was done with his beautiful mate.

" Well, Vegeta, it looks like they're ready for our order. Any idea what you want yet? " She whispered against his ear as they approached their table, he saw the waiter there and growled at the brazen invitation in her words. Her fingers drifted down his chest to the waist of his slacks, her eyes met his and one of her fingers ventured inside. " Ooh, silk? "

Sapphra turned and sat down abruptly. Then she glanced back up at him, seductively grinning at him from beneath her long auburn lashes and her matching bangs.

" I thought you said you had changed? " Vegeta growled, but his eyes were anything but angry.

" I have. But, I suppose you could say that what's changed is now I want only you. "

Vegeta smirked at the beautiful would be seductress. " Well, I hate to leave a beautiful lady in such obvious distress, but I still want just… her. "

" Loyalty? Even to a woman who just blew you off like that? " Sapphra looked away sadly. " You really are perfect, aren't you? "

Vegeta said nothing as he turned to leave.

" Uh… Vegeta, if you change your mind, about lunch, or anything else, or if you just want someone to talk to… well, don't hesitate to look me up, ok? "

He nodded just once, and Sapphra sighed as he disappeared out the door.
