It Was Supposed to Be Forever

Chapter 16

By, Lady Valtaya

Wolf pressed his back up against the door, searching frantically for another exit, as the man behind the desk sat back in the chair and smirked. There was coldness in Vegeta's eyes that left him shaking in fear. He found himself wishing that he hadn't planned all of this so perfectly. He knew now he should never have come here. In an effort to get a story, Wolf knew he'd done some… questionable things, but looking into Vegeta's eyes, he saw death itself. Vegeta was like a well fed cat, toying with a mouse.

"Well." Vegeta purred, still smirking. "Perhaps if you explain yourself quickly enough, I might let you live long enough to beg for mercy."

"I-I have an appointment to see M-miss B-briefs. So if she isn't here…"

"Funny you should mention that… My mate is caring for our son, who has a bit of a fever today, so I am keeping her appointments. Big companies don't run themselves, you know. But, if I should happen to like whatever you tell me I might still allow you to speak with her. "

Wolf's brow knitted in confusion for a moment, as the words sunk into his head through his fear induced haze. He glanced up and paled at the devilish smirk Vegeta was giving him. "You want me to… I can't… this is blackmail…"

Vegeta laughed coldly, and flipped the reporter's business card at him. "That is blackmail too. Why is it, Mr. Sprenger that the game suddenly ceases to be fun when you realize you are going to loose? Bulma saved your life only a few months ago, why would it occur to you to hurt her now?"

"You are the one that cheated on her. How dare you try to…" Wolf was four feet off of the ground in a deadly choke hold before he even realized that Vegeta was no longer sitting in the chair.

"Humans usually find murder to be a much more interesting story than adultery, so why did you choose to overshadow the death of Sapphra's husband with photos that we both know were not genuine in the first place?" Vegeta demanded, dropping the human, who crumpled to the floor panting helplessly.

"The ones that will be printed tomorrow if I don't leave this room alive are quite genuine though, aren't they?"

"I don't scare easily, human." Vegeta growled in a warning tone. "You will get to hear my question once more before I begin breaking your bones. Why do you want to hurt Bulma?"

"You don't deserve her and…"

"And you think you might?" Vegeta laughed. "You are a coward, a weakling and you are stupid. The odds of you finding a mate even on this pathetic planet are not good. You thought you would show her your little pictures and she'd come crawling to you for comfort? She'd be more likely to get angry and demand to know everything about them- including how you got them. Sapphra doesn't know about whatever cameras you have on her, does she?

Wolf paled even more. "W-why would you care?"

"I'm just wondering why there are cameras that she doesn't know about in her bedroom, when she wouldn't let someone like you get close enough to smell her perfume. Do you have cameras in her living room too?"

"Why would you think she doesn't know?" Wolf asked trying to evade the question.

"If she knew where your cameras were she would've wanted to stay at the vanity or have me take her to the bed of course. So, what would you say if I called Sapphra and told her what a sick bastard you are, planting cameras around to spy on her? Could you explain to the humans with the badges- the police where you got your pictures? Admit it human. You have no way out of your little mess."

"You don't have anything on me, whatever you think you are. I was just on the balcony…"

Vegeta threw his head back and laughed. "You can see the balcony in the pictures and you aren't in any of them idiot. Your cameras are some sort of surveillance devices, permanently installed and probably continuously active. Do you sell the tapes of her with her lovers under the table or are you just blackmailing all of them too?"

Wolf looked mortified. "I would never!"

"I would have- if we had met eight years ago and it was my little scheme." Vegeta shrugged. "But as odd as it sounds, I believe you this time… So you twisted little human, why do you have so many cameras on one pretty flower if you're not trying to catch the bees?"

Wolf shook his head. "I-I can't tell you that!"

"Look human, I am through playing games with you, so I warn you now. Don't lie to me. Your 'police brutality' reports will look like the gentlest slap on the wrist imaginable when I drop your worthless, soon to be boneless carcass off at the dump in about two seconds. Shall I fill in some of the blanks in your memory for you or just break one of your knees?"

"I-I want my lawyer!" The frightened human howled, cowering against the door.

"You won't live long enough to need one if you don't explain your actions to me right now." Vegeta growled, his tone was suddenly low and dangerous again. Wolf stopped shaking as he tried to look in Vegeta's eyes again.

"You can't interrogate me like this! I'm-"

"What you are, little human, is a sick bastard that was going to get Sapphra's husband to kill her on tape- but why? I imagine she refused to sleep with you. But why would you want to see her get killed if you weren't going to hurt her yourself?"

Wolf gasped- and his eyes widened as he stared at Vegeta in shock. "H-how did you know that?"

"The way that he smelled and something about the things he was yelling at Sapphra that night told me that he meant to kill her. But I don't think that her husband came up with that idea logically- or on his own. He was so angry he couldn't think straight. He was completely enraged at his mate and I know you know why. Were you unsuccessful at trying to blackmail her into your bed or did you just give him a couple of pictures from your collection and sit back to watch the fun without giving her any warning? She didn't seem to think there was anything out of the ordinary going on… But why would you do that? Why would you want him to hurt her?"

"I-I needed a big story to get back into the limelight and I-"

"A story??"

"Yes something that would make headlines in the news…"

"News is that show Bulma watches for two hours every evening after dinner… You were going to create an event to write about for that??"

"A good story is like a piece of game. You have to know it intimately from every angle and-"

"Perhaps your name is Wolf but you are no hunter. Life and death are parts of the natural order; only humans would be stupid enough to think that if they keep close enough track of their world that this cycle will change somehow. Do you think it makes you clever to try to get some brainless bastard to kill a defenseless woman on your behalf? A good hunter knows that the strong prey upon the weak to stay strong and continue life's balance. An animal does not try to manipulate the habits of the animal it is hunting, he simply follows it into its fatal mistake. That is the difference between a good hunter and a great one. Your mistake was thinking that you were coming in to collect your prize. When your focus moved from Sapphra and revenge to Bulma, you became my prey. I knew eventually you would move in on her, all I had to do was wait. Now… what should I do with such a disgusting little human? I pay little attention to the laws on any planet I visit- but even I know that you have broken several on this one... I believe my mate and Sapphra will know what to do with you."

"W-wha- You can't! I can't meet Bulma now-"

"I think it's a splendid idea, if I do say so myself." Vegeta laughed. "I hope you can talk fast, cuz when she gets here I'm sure she'll be pretty pissed."

"Mr… uh Vegeta sir?" The telephone on the desk said with the sweet voice of the receptionist. "Your 3:45 is here and Bulma is on her way in too- And uh- Vegeta- Bulma looks pretty pissed… sir."

"Thank you, send both of them in." Vegeta smirked.

Vegeta had tossed Wolf onto the couch against the far wall and was still eyeing him carefully as much to protect the two females who were about to arrive as to be sure he wouldn't try to escape. Vegeta sat on the corner of the desk, facing the door.

Sapphra gave him a questioning smile as she arrived, as always she looked beautiful, but he just wanted to see Bulma again. Sapphra's long hair was down and she was wearing a fuzzy pink sweater and tight jeans. "Vegeta? I got here as soon as I could- and I wanted to tell you I'm sorry about the other night…"

Vegeta nodded and glanced at the sofa to the left. Sapphra followed his gaze and gasped as she recognized the slimy little reporter. "What are you doing here you bastard?"

"You may want to sit down for this, Sapphra." Vegeta told her quietly, but his eyes never left the door.

**

Bulma was so angry she was shaking as she stormed up toward her office. What in the hell did Vegeta think he was doing playing around in her office?? He didn't know the first thing about her work… How dare he have the receptionist call her up there like that- although since she had discovered Trunk's little lie it did save her the trouble of finding the arrogant bastard.

"Vegeta!" Bulma screeched as she threw the door open. Vegeta sat on the corner of her desk, looking at her quietly. She couldn't quite place his expression, but she noticed Sapphra sitting in one of the overstuffed chairs several feet from the desk and was about to leave when Vegeta stopped her, gently holding on to her arm.

"I can't let you leave until you have let me try to explain all the things I couldn't before." Vegeta told her quietly. He didn't try to turn her around and he didn't let go, knowing she had to make up her mind or all the explanations in the world wouldn't matter.

Bulma's wounded pride and her stubborn mind told her to jerk her hand away and walk out and never look back. She knew how easy it would be for him to lie, she'd seen it often enough with Yamcha. But something in side of her begged her to listen. She knew it was their bond, slowly she turned to look at him. He seemed relieved and he even smiled a little as he motioned to the chair next to Sapphra. Bulma glared at the other female, but Sapphra was looking at something behind her. Bulma turned to look at it too, and gasped as she saw the crumpled looking man sitting miserably on the couch.

"Vegeta," Bulma growled, "You had better not have been hurting that man…"

Vegeta laughed. "You will change your mind when you hear what this twisted little human did, woman."
