Look to the Past
Chapter 1 - Love & Martial Arts

Books in hand, Debra walked the hallways of her high school, heading towards her locker.

"Soooo, Debra?" drawled the blond girl walking next to her. "When are you going to get a boyfriend?"

Debra made a wry face, "When I can find a guy who isn't scared or threatened by the fact that I'm stronger than him."

Mitsy smiled, "I'm sure you'll find him."

Still walking, Debra turned to face her, "Oh yeah, and just where ...OOOF!!" She abruptly cut off mid-sentence as another student collided with her.

"Oww!! What are you, made of stone or something?!" the boy hollered up at her from where he'd been knocked to the floor, holding his nose in pain.

"Something like that. Now let me see if anything's broken," Debra ordered, pulling his hands away from his nose. 'Wow, he's cute!'

"Oww," he whined as she gently poked the top and sides of his nose, checking for any of the tell-tale signs of a break or fracture.

Finishing her examination she grinned down at him, "You'll live. At the worst you'll get a bruise or a black eye. I'd put some ice on it now, before it gets a chance to swell."

"Umm, yeah," he muttered, beating a hasty retreat to the nurse's office.

"Ooooo! Looks like Debbie's got someone in mind!" Mitsy teased.

"Oh stop it! I was just worried I'd hurt him, that's all," Debra denied, but she was starting to blush.

Mitsy noticed and grinned slyly at her, "Oh sure."

Debra crossed her arms over her chest, "Besides, he's just a sophomore and I'm a senior."

"That's a two year age difference, Debra. I think you're just being a chicken."

"I am not!"

"You are too!"

"I AM NOT!!"

A few weeks later found Debra giving a welcome speech to the members of the Japanese Language Club . . .

". . . this year I am happy to announce that our club has nearly tripled in size. . ." she was saying when a flash of movement to her right caught her attention. SOMEONE was throwing things at her! 'Okay buddy, try it again so I can find you,' she thought, still speaking as though nothing had happened. Another paper wad came at her and Debra caught it without missing a beat. When her eyes caught sight of the trouble-maker her heart skipped. 'It's him!' Allowing herself a small smirk, she threw the paper wad back at him, faster than any normal human could throw.

Tim blinked in shock, both at the hole in his paper and at the paper wad stuck to his chest. It had stung quite a bit. 'How did she do that?' His friends were stunned speechless, they just stared back and forth between the paper wad and Debra trying to figure it out.

After the meeting as she was walking to her car, Debra was surprised to hear her name being called out.

"Debra! Wait up!"

She turned to see Tim running after her, "Nanda?"

At his blank stare she remembered that he was only a first year language student and wouldn't know that yet. So, she switched back to English, "What do you want?" she asked a bit crossly.

"Um . . . well . . . I, uh . . . wanted to apologize for the whole paper wad thing," he stuttered, looking sheepish.

Debra smiled, she couldn't help herself, 'He's even cuter when he's apologizing. . .' Outloud she said, "I accept your apology. Your name's Tim, right?"

Tim grinned, "Yep. Say, where'd you learn to throw like that?"

Debra shrugged her shoulders, "I'm a martial artist. It kinda comes with the territory."

"Really?" Debra nodded and Tim chuckled, "I guess that explains how I nearly broke my nose just bumping into you."

"Pretty much."

Curious, Tim ventured another question, "So what style do you know?"

"Well. . ." Debra looked thoughtful, "I was trained by my mother and grandfather . . ."

Tim was shocked, "Your mother?!"

Debra glared at him, "Yes, my mother! I come from a long line of martial artists."

"Oh."

"As I was saying . . . Mom and Grandpa trained me and Grandpa was trained by Mutenroshi-sama so I guess it would be the Kamesennin style of martial arts." She turned to see Tim staring at her, his eyes wide and his mouth hanging open.

"The Kamesennin."

"Uh-huh."

"Wow. You gonna go professional?"

Debra nodded and looked into the distance, "Yeah, my goal is to one day be good enough to enter the Tenkaichi Budokai."

An image flashed through Tim's mind and suddenly, he knew. "I'm sure you'll make it," he told her, grinning hugely.

Debra smiled brightly appreciating his encouragement, but it would take years of training before she was ready. "Thanks!"

They stood that way for awhile, just smiling at one another before Debra broke the silence. "Umm, Tim? Would you like to come to my next tournament?" The young senshi was blushing as she spoke, both hopeful and nervous in anticipation of his answer.

Tim was rather surprised, "You really want me to come?"

"I wouldn't have asked if I didn't."

"Sure I'll come, it sounds like a blast!"

Debra eyed her final opponent warily, his fighting style was very strange. He seemed to change his technique with every move. 'But that's impossible. . . unless. . . ' With a loud kiai shout Debra charged.

Her opponent smirked at her stupidity, 'So she wants to fight head on? She'll go down even faster than I thought.' Reaching him, Debra reared back to strike with her arm and he prepared to take her out. He was caught completely off-guard when she dropped to the ground and swept her legs under his, knocking him down. Quickly Debra flipped to her feet and elbow-dropped him. He gulped nervously, she had stopped her arm mere millimeters from his neck and was holding this position as the referee counted, not letting him up until the count was finished. Up in the stands, her friends cheered wildly.

"All-right Debra!!!"

"Way to go, girl!!"

"Show him who's boss!!"

Tim was probably the loudest of the bunch, but who could blame him? After all, it was his girlfriend down there. He'd been to all her competitions over the last two years and she never ceased to amaze him. 'She'll make it to the Budokai in no time.' Tim had often been asked if it bothered him that his girlfriend could kick his ass. His reply? Not at all. You see, Tim had several unique abilities of his own. Telepathy, telekinesis, telempathy, and psychometry were just a few of his psychic talents. Thus in that area, he was the stronger. Still, they were an odd couple.

Debra stood and smiled proudly, she had done it! Her opponent got to his feet as well, albeit a little shaky. They bowed to one another in respect. "I see you caught on to my technique."

She nodded, "Aaa. It was well hidden . . . I didn't figure it out until the end."

He smiled, "I haven't been defeated in nearly five years. I expect I'll be seeing your name in higher-level competitions soon."

"That's the idea."

"Good. I look forward to the next time we fight," he told her and left the ring.

"Debra!!!" The familiar voices screaming her name caused a big, silly grin to spread over her face.

"Hey guys!" she greeted them, still toweling her hair.

Mitsy hugged her tightly then jumped back, her eyes sparkling with excitement, "Wow Debra! That was amazing!"

"Yeah!" Sara chimed in, "I mean, that last guy almost had you and then . . . WHAM!" she waved her arms for emphasis.

"You totally faked him out and dropped him like a bad habit," John finished.

Wrapping an arm around her shoulder, Tim pulled Debra into a hug, then lightly kissed her, "You were fantastic." Debra melted at the compliment, but the tender moment was broken when their friends began making gagging sounds.

"Spoilsports," Debra snorted as Tim let her go.

"Don't be in such a rush you two," Mitsy replied, "You've got years ahead to do that stuff."

John nodded in agreement, "Yeah, focus on the more immediate things in your life."

"Like what?" Tim and Debra asked in unison.

"Like going out for a victory celebration at Pizza Hut with your friends, that's what!" Sara cheered.

In case you haven't guessed already, Debra lives in the U.S. That's why there's almost no Japanese used in this chapter, she and everyone else around her are speaking English. So why Pizza Hut? Well, it's my favorite place for take-out pizza! Mmmm . . . Pizza Hut . . . Oh HFIL, now I'm hungry. *~*
