Chapter 4 - Happiness

Rezu looked up from her potato peeling duties to see two filthy little boys racing towards the house. Their headway was frequently interrupted by tackles and tiny ki blasts, but by the time they came to a thundering halt on the porch they were giggling.

She held her nose and made a face. "You two reek. There is no way you can go into the house like that."

Goten grinned and leaped into her lap, knocking a potato to the ground. "Daddy showed us how to cook a fish!"

"So I see - and smell," she laughed. "Off. You stink and need a bath."

"My fish was bigger than Goten's," Trunks said proudly.

"Was not!" Goten dropped from her lap and glared at his friend, tail snapping.

"Knock it off you two!" Chichi ordered through the kitchen window.

"But he said..." Goten protested before he realized he was pinned by his mom's 'evil eye'.

"Now you've done it," Trunks whispered.

"Since you are dirty already you can bring some more firewood up to the house. And then take a bath. You have 45 minutes until dinner," Chichi commanded.

Trunks giggled and poked Goten. "Haw, haw."

"You too, Trunks," Chichi added.

"Aw, maaan," he complained.

"Better get moving guys," Rezu said. "We need lots of wood, and you two aren't coming in until you are clean."

Rezu grinned as two muttering, complaining little boys trudged away.

"Were they that bad?" Chichi asked her girlfriend - no, fiancé, she thought with a smile - through the window.

"Hon, they are covered in fish guts and mud. Goten was only in my lap for a minute and I need a shower," Rezu said, wrinkling her nose in disgust.

"I better fill the outside tub for them then," Chichi sighed.

"I'll take care of that. You've got your hands full in there. Maybe you can get some clean clothes for them. Then I really need to clean up myself," Rezu said, handing the bowl of potatoes - minus one muddy one - to the brunette.

Chichi looked at the blonde and laughed. "He did it on purpose, you know. Maybe I should make you stay outside too." She backed into the kitchen and closed the screen door.

"You wouldn't dare," Rezu mock-glared. "Leave me outside with those two, and you aren't getting any tonight."

"I'm not sure I want any if you stink like that," Chichi grinned through the screen.

"Woman, I am sorely tempted to come in there and ravish you until you apologize," Rezu leered.

Chichi laughed and turned back to her cooking.

"Hey! Don't I at least get a kiss?!" Rezu pouted.

"Nope. You reek."

"You're gonna pay for this," the blonde exclaimed as she headed for the back of the house.

"Hope so," Chichi smirked.

--------------

Chichi sat on the porch swing, gazing out over her garden and hummed happily to herself. Whoever would have thought life could be so good?

Her marriage to Goku had been...well...not happy. The first few years were good. Gohan was born and Goku stayed close to home. They felt like a family. It didn't take long though for her to realize they weren't really right for each other, but she still wasn't willing to give up on her dream.

Then the Saiyans began to arrive. Goku died. Gohan was taken away. That was the end of anything remotely resembling normal in her life. Even when Goku and Gohan returned, life was weird and she was unhappy. She clung to Gohan desperately, trying to maintain the façade of family, but things just crumbled.

Marriage to Goku wasn't what she had hoped for. She knew now she foolishly had expected life to be like her books and television shows. She wanted to be the 'happy housewife', but Goku wasn't cut out to be the type of husband she had wanted. It wasn't his fault - he didn't even know what marriage was. He wasn't going to be the briefcase carrying, 'Honey, I'm home', partner she dreamed of. She tried to make him that, and only succeeded in making both of them miserable. Chichi knew Goku's friends didn't like her because of the way she had acted, and frankly, looking back on it, she agreed with them. She didn't like the person she had become then.

Every day Goku was gone she got angrier and lonelier. This wasn't what her life was supposed to be. She shouldn't have to do everything - worry about everything - Goku was supposed to help, damn it, not leave her alone.

When Goku had died - really died - fighting Cell and chose not to return, she thought her world had ended. She felt angry and betrayed. She blamed herself, she blamed him, she blamed everyone - how could he leave her like this?

She became desperate; analyzing every moment they had shared, wondering if no matter what he said, she was really the reason he stayed away. She struggled to cope - widowed, pregnant, broke, with a depressed, suicidal son. If it hadn't been for Piccolo keeping an eye on him, she was sure she would have lost her boy.

Bulma had helped out some - Goten's birth had been difficult and she ended up having to stay at Capsule Corp until she recovered. She had been amazed, and a little scared, the first time Vegeta had picked up her fussing baby. He didn't say a word. Just held Goten, examined his tail, smelled his hair, and then handed her a quiet, smiling infant. She had thanked him and he just nodded and left the room.

When she returned home, nearly a year had passed since Goku's death. Gohan was doing better, splitting most of his time between studying and Piccolo. Chichi realized her anger and desperation was not helping, and that was when she made a conscious decision to stop the behavior that had made Goku's friends dislike her. She was determined not to be the nasty shrew they thought she was - she knew she had been.

And it was the stupidest little things that helped - she had always expected Goku to know what she needed done around the house, and got annoyed when he didn't do them, and furious when she ended up having to do them herself. Now she asked - Gohan if it was something he could do, Piccolo if he was willing and knew how, or one of Goku's friends if he couldn't. It took a huge weight off her shoulders, and suddenly life didn't seem so impossible. She had hated asking for help at first - she thought everyone would think she was a bad mother and person. After awhile she realized they didn't. She was able to help them, too. Babysitting and cooking were her favorites. They all knew they could bring their children over and she would be happy to see them. She loved children, after all.

She had been amazed again when Vegeta starting showing up whenever he chose - she had never dared to ask him for help. Sometimes he would spar with Gohan. Other times he would do little things to help out - like chopping wood or filling barrels of water from the lake for her garden. Vegeta rarely spoke, just nodded when she thanked him, and then left.

She surprised herself one day and invited him in to lunch. She was sure Vegeta surprised himself even more when he accepted. It almost became a ritual after that. He would show up, spend some time with the boys, do some little chore around the house that needed muscle to be done, eat, and then leave.

She was still lonely, and money was tight, but that finally changed after a really rotten day.

-------------

The day had started out wretched and was getting progressively worse. Deer had gotten into her garden overnight and she lost enough of her vegetables to make her worry about having enough food. Gohan was having a 'teenager' day, and after complaining bitterly about having to fix the fence he had flown off to be with Piccolo. Three-year-old Goten was being difficult, fussing about having to be away from Trunks for the day. The car didn't want to start, and when she finally got it running it sounded like there was something seriously wrong with it.

She just wanted to get her grocery shopping over with, go home, put Goten down for a nap, and have a good cry. That wasn't what happened, though. Goten was already upset, and when a curious customer reached into her cart and handled his tail, he got scared. His ki flared wildly out of control, jars and bottles shattered, sending shards of glass everywhere. Fortunately, there had been hardly anyone in the aisle - the man that caused the uproar bolted as soon as Goten screamed. As it was, she and Goten were hurt the worst - nothing major, but messy. Goten's ki finally stopped flaring, but he wouldn't stop crying. His tail had been cut, and she couldn't calm him down.

She was nearly hysterical herself, afraid Goten was seriously hurt, buffeted by waves of his terrified ki, and a stupid fear of having to pay for the damage with money she didn't have. Luckily, there was a fire rescue team in the store, picking up their lunch. Rezu and her partner Steve came over immediately, and the blonde woman seemed totally unfazed to see Goten's tail. Rezu was trying to convince the boy to let her check how badly he had been injured when Vegeta had shown up.

"Vegeta?" she asked, shocked. Why was he here? How did he know -? Oh, of course. Goten's ki had spiked.

"Give me the boy," he demanded, tail thrashing in agitation.

Rezu looked at him, noticing his tail. "Are you his father?"

Chichi heard Vegeta's low growl as the blonde continued.

"Sir, I need to examine him first. I want to make sure none of his cuts are serious," Rezu said calmly.

Vegeta's tail snapped behind him and Chichi could tell he was trying to control his temper. He looked over at her, appraising her injuries. He turned back to the blonde.

"You don't know how to treat his tail. I do. Give him to me and look after her."

Chichi wasn't sure what the prince would do if the other woman refused. She didn't want to find out - the blonde was just trying to do her job.

"It's okay," Chichi said to her. "Let him hold Goten. He can take care of him."

Goten was still sniffling, but he was getting over his initial fright. When Vegeta took him from Rezu's arms her son wrapped his arms around the prince's neck and hid his face. Chichi watched silently, waiting for the verdict, as Vegeta gently threaded the thin black tail through his fingers.

"He'll be fine," he finally said. "I'm taking him with me."

Chichi just nodded numbly as the prince strode away with her son.

Rezu was beside her then. "Are you sure you want to let him go without me checking him? We can stop him."

Chichi made a hysterical little laugh. "Once Vegeta has made up his mind, there is no stopping him."

--------------

Goten had been fine, but Vegeta insisted he stay at Capsule Corp for a few days. He said it was because he didn't want to have to fly all over the place when the 'brat' started blowing things up. Chichi knew better. She knew Vegeta well enough to realize he had actually been concerned and wanted to make sure Goten was okay. He spent most of that week teaching the boys to control their ki so an accident like that wouldn't happen again.

Chichi had made a point of finding out when Rezu was on shift and brought her lunch one day. She was just trying to be friendly, right? She wasn't attracted to the calm, cheerful blonde, was she? She didn't look at women like that.

She laughed to herself. She sure did. Something about the compact body, the muscles, and that wonderful pudgy belly just made her shiver. Chichi had never before considered she might be a lesbian - after all, they didn't exist in her books. Such a thing didn't happen in her fantasy world. It didn't matter anyway - Rezu had to be straight because she was always surrounded by guys - they liked her, they were her friends.

Eventually, Rezu had rented a room in her house. She needed a place to live, and Chichi needed the money. It didn't hurt that Goten adored her, either. It was difficult to hide her attraction to the blonde, but she did, not wanting to make things uncomfortable for her boarder. At first she was surprised, then thrilled, to learn Rezu was gay and actually liked her too. She wasn't sure anymore who had made the first move - but the first time they kissed it had been perfect.

She smiled as Rezu sat down beside her and she pulled her close, licking soft lips that soon parted. Chichi slipped her tongue into warmth, tasting honey and cinnamon.

When they separated, Rezu laughed softly. "You're awfully happy," she said.

"Why shouldn't I be? You are the lover I have always wanted. We're getting married in less than two months. Everything is perfect."

Rezu curled up next to her to watch the sunset. "You're such a mush. But you're my mush."

Don't forget, if you want to be notified when I update, leave your email...

This chapter was a little (okay, alot) fluffy, but I wanted to give Chichi and Rezu some time. It also shows Vegeta as he started to become more of a father, before he died fighting Buu. Frieza messed up alot of lives. The next chapter is trying to cook in my head, but everytime I try to move the plot on, Goku and Vegeta keep wanting sex. I think they are going to win. *sigh* Sunset, outside, on a cliff...mush, mush, mush. *grin*

Macha - Goku is still struggling with the bond. It will probably pop up now and then, but he is learning to recognize its influence. Poor Trunks. Can't see his daddy. *blinks* Oh, a scene plot bunny just jumped into my head. *scribbles madly - okay, I'm back now* Vegeta never wants Trunks to know - remember, he is insecure enough as it is - Vegeta would be worried about losing Trunks as a result.

Lizzy - You are forgiven, dear. Look, I made you verbose. *g* Glad you like it so far. This story will be a bit lighter, although there will be some angst and drama. Goku is trying to learn how to be a good father, because he failed Gohan more than he would have liked.

Webtester01 - I think my brainwashing solution is going to take a stroll into soap opera territory. We'll see. I have some thoughts, but they haven't coalesced yet. Bulma will learn what happened, but her reaction...?

Jaygoose - Oh, in the show, I thought Goku was a dreadful parent. Vegeta was much better, once he accepted he was a father. (Well, that's the way I saw it.) But Goku is making an effort now. He wants Vegeta to be proud of him, after all.

suisheu - I haven't quite decided where the switching ends. Vegeta has better control over it, but he also benefits because Goku is basically a happier, better adjusted person. Goku doesn't have the mental control Vegeta does (don't worry, the prince is trying to help him), but Vegeta has many more issues that influence him. We'll get into the brainwashing more, but the basic is, once it is triggered on someone, it is done. In theory they are dead, and Vegeta remembers everything then. But Trunks hasn't triggered it yet, which is why Vegeta feels something and avoids him.

Velvet Curse - Whaddya think? Should I send Olibu and Pikkon to hell to destroy Frieza for Goku? Naaah.

atlantiya - *bows* Thank you for your kind words. :)

VegetasSquee - Young Trunks is very huggable. When he gets old enough (and not until) Goten gets to hug him. :)

Jontg - Wow, what a compliment. Thank you.

LadyKATT and snen - *glomps*

Kethry - Oh, it could happen - could be fun. Goku and Vegeta are learning to enjoy each other. Play will happen, but Vegeta has to feel comfortable and safe. Just as a comment - you can almost read quite a few of my short stories as post Quest snapshots of their relationship. (Fluff, Popsicle, Pound...) Maybe I will rewrite them later to fit better, but we'll have to see.

XxNeko_YoukaixX - You've got to ask yourself - what's worse? A cheerful Vegeta or a depressed one? I think Piccolo would go with cheerful. Poor Vegeta. Poor Trunks. I'm evil. Just remember that. Working on the brainwashing...probably begin to deal with it in the next chapter or so. Need to get rid of it so they can get on with the happy boinking! *snicker* Watch those claws there, kitten. That is tender flesh you're messing with. Grins at cute little neko purrs.
