Original Author's Notes from ff.net Oct. 2002: Okay, here it goes. I have worked in a video store for the past 4 years (sad huh?). Anyway, most of the events in this story are based on events that actually happened for the most part, although some have been warped, twisted, and otherwise rearranged for entertainment purposes. On with the mayhem!!

Chapter 1: Hangover Hell

Bulma pulled up to the store a few minutes after 9 am. `Right on time,' she thought, considering she was always five minutes late no matter how early she woke up. She was happy that no one was waiting for her this morning. She did not feel like dealing with the psychos who could not wait until later to rent their stupid movies. Today was not going to be a good day, and she'd take any mercy given to her. Her head hurt like hell and she was still woozy. She went inside, locked the door behind her, and turned off the alarm. Chunking her stuff down on the desk behind the counter, she checked the schedule to see who was to be working with her and was also late this morning.
"Marron!!?? Oh hell. Why of all people am I stuck dealing with this idiot while I have a hangover?? I'd rather put up with anyone else today."
Bulma laid her head on the desk as she recalled the events of last night leading up to this unfortunate morning.
She and Yamcha stayed up watching some old 70's kung-fu movies. They had been drinking. This was probably the reason she found them so humorous, besides the fact that in her opinion the acting was quite corny. She didn't really care much for martial arts movies, but it had been his turn to pick the movies last night.
Bulma hadn't really drank that much, but it had been a while since she had drank and had apparently lost her tolerance. She woke up this morning feeling like complete hell. She drug her butt to the kitchen and got a glass of water instead of her usual coffee. She knew she couldn't stomach that this morning; however, she wrongly assumed the water would make her feel better. As she sat on the floor of the shower, throwing up the water she had that morning along with anything else still left in her stomach from the previous night, she was oblivious to the water pouring down on her. Her mind was only focused on how horrible she felt.
"Today is going to suck."
When she was done dry heaving, Bulma decided to finish her shower and attempt to go to work.
She was disturbed from her thoughts by Marron tapping on the window behind her. 'Oh great,' she thought. 'The queen of the idiots has arrived.' Although she didn't particularly hate Marron, she didn't much care for her either. She was very ditsy and immature, flirted with everything that was male, including their coworkers, and even succeeded in getting them angry at each other a few times.
They soon realized she was no more than a tease and just disregarded her behavior as `being Marron.'
Bulma unlocked the door for her and decided she'd sat on her butt long enough.
It was time to get to work. She warned Marron that she wasn't feeling 'well' today and told her not to bother her unless absolutely necessary. The rest of the morning was rather uneventful. There weren't many customers so far and none of them had bothered her any. Marron was actually doing a decent job checking everyone out without screwing up anything. Bulma had to admit she would have been impressed if she had felt better. Around lunch time, she decided she would try to eat something, hoping she'd be able to hold it down. She pulled out her meal replacement bar and took a bite. 'So far so good,' she thought. These were her usual breakfast when she's running too late to fix something and didn't want to eat cereal (or was too hung over.)
That was when things went to crap. The first of three interviewees had arrived.
“Shit! I completely forgot I had interviews today." She told Marron she'd be in the back room if she needed her. Bulma greeted the first of her victims and led her to the break room in the back of the store. There was a table with a couple of chairs on either side. Bulma sat on one side and motioned for the girl (she doesn't get a name) to sit on the other side. Bulma had already decided not to hire her in just the few seconds it took to walk to the back and sit down. This girl was not wearing much at all. 'I think there is more cleavage outside the shirt than what is covered! Damn it, Oolong. You just had to get fired and subject me to this hell, didn't you?' she thought. Nevertheless, she proceeded to ask her the typical questions she liked to start interviews off with.
"Why do you have an interest in working here?"
"I need a job," she flatly stated.
Okay. "Have you ever worked with computers much?"
"Not really." She blew a bubble with her gum and sucked it back in her mouth.
Bulma rolled her eyes. "Do you like movies?"
"What? I guess. I mean who doesn't like to watch a movie once in a while." She was now playing with her hair.
"Well, I think that's about it. We'll call you if we need anymore information from you."
"Oh, okay then." She smiled a disgustingly cute smile and they left the room.
Bulma shook her head in exasperation. "The last thing we need is another
Marron," she said to herself. She walked back up to the front to see what Miss
Flirt was up to and to get a bottle of water. The display did not surprise her at all; in fact it was quite typical of any day Marron worked. There were 2 guys hanging around the counter hitting on her while she was checking out an elderly couple. She was completely ignoring the couple, and they were obviously getting annoyed so Bulma took action.
"Okay guys if you're not getting anything, then get out. Some people have jobs and need to get back to work." She glared at Marron with the last remark, although she clearly did not get what was implied to her. The two men gave Bulma a not so friendly look and told Marron they'd see her later.
Bulma sat down, drank her water, and rubbed her temples. The day was turning into a long one, and it wasn't even half way over yet. She finished her paperwork that she was unable to work on earlier that morning. She was very thankful to not be nauseous anymore, but wished the damn headache would go away.
Her head pounded even more as Marron managed to knock a stack of tapes off the counter. "Hee hee. Oops. Sorry Bulma." She bent over to pick the tapes up, and immediately a man began helping her. "Oh thank you." Marron winked at the man.
Bulma just rolled her eyes and checked to see what time it was. "12:40, huh?
Well my next interviewee is already ten minutes late. I doubt I'll be hiring him. Maybe I should just save myself the trouble of doing the interview," she said to herself. A few minutes later a guy came in and asked for Bulma. "I'm Bulma," she stated.
"Hi I'm Alex. I have an interview with you."
"Well you should have been here fifteen minutes ago. Let's get this over with."
She noticed what he was wearing and wondered if he had ever been to an interview before. He had on dirty jeans that were falling off and a tight, white tank top.
It would be fine to wear if you're just going somewhere but it's not exactly something that would impress a future employer.
They went into the break room and took their seats. She began to ask him the same questions she had asked the girl earlier but was interrupted.
"So what's a beautiful woman like you working in a video store for? You could be a model or something." He licked his lips then grinned at her.
She cocked an eyebrow at him and said, "I'll be doing the interviewing if you don't mind, and if you're remotely interested in getting this job, I suggest you respect the woman who could be your future boss, Okay?" She gave him a smug smile and continued with her questions. She wasn't even listening to his responses. She just noticed how he was slouching in his chair and occasionally adjusting his boxer shorts that were hanging out of his pants. As they were exiting the room, he placed his hand on her lower back, causing her cringe. She imagined herself spinning around and placing a swift kick to the side of his head that sent him flying into the comedy section. Her daydream subsided when she realized she was too tired to worry about it.
`I need to quit watching kung-fu movies with Yamcha. They're making me violent,' she thought and allowed herself a small smile.
As soon as he left, she went to check on Marron again. She had a line that went across half of the store and was on the phone with another customer. Somehow she had managed to get the phone cord wrapped around one of her legs and then around her waist a few times. She tried to hang up the phone and managed to trip over the cord. She fell on her ass and the phone was pulled off the counter and fell on her head. Bulma laughed at the sight. Well at least something has been entertaining today. She helped Marron get the line out of there and went to put up some tapes until her next hopeful employee showed up to annoy her.
To her surprise, he was actually on time and had all inappropriate body parts covered. "Well there's hope for today yet," she said sarcastically to herself.
She grabbed her paperwork and found his application.
"Hello Vegeta, I'm Bulma."
"Nice to meet you," he said.
"Shall we?" she smiled. They went to the back and took their seats. She noticed he was quite cute, but quickly dismissed the thought and got back to business.
"So what made you choose this place?”
"Well, it's close to school and looked like it might be an interesting place to work," he replied.
Bulma nodded and continued with the interrogation. "Do you like movies?"
"Well I don't spend all my time in front of the TV but I do like to watch movies sometimes."
"Do you have any experience with computers?"
"Yes, I can work a computer." That statement came out with an annoyed tone to it, but Bulma overlooked it. 'Maybe this one actually has a brain,' she thought and let a small laugh slip. Vegeta looked at her curiously.
"I'm sorry. I've had an..interesting day today," she said searching for an appropriate word to describe the crap that she would call her job.
They discussed a few other things such as what type of hours he was looking to work. She informed him of the pay and benefits involved, if you can call them that. He did seem slightly interested in the free rentals though.
"It does include the games as well, everything except the actual game systems and defensive driving."
He thought it over for a moment. Bulma noted he had a bit of an attitude that could be a problem, but compared to the idiots she interviewed earlier, he would be a model employee. "So, you want the job? You can start tomorrow if you fill out all the paperwork today."
"Okay," he said.
She gave him a short run down of the store on their way back up to the front.
She also informed him of the somewhat eccentric coworkers he would be dealing with. "Stay away from Marron. She's a nice girl, but she's a major tease and likes to use guys against each other to get what she wants. She's not very bright either," she said quietly as she noticed him looking at her. Vegeta nodded in acknowledgement and began filling out the new hire paperwork.
Bulma walked to the other end of the counter to see what was left to be done when Marron bounced her way over to her.
"So, who's he?" Marron asked.
"That's Vegeta. He'll be starting tomorrow night. Please try to keep your pants on would ya?"
"You're no fun you know. He looks magically delicious." Marron licked her lips with that statement, and Bulma rolled her eyes in disgust.
'Doesn't she ever stop?' she wondered.
"Okay I'm done with these," Vegeta said from behind the desk.
"Alright, I just need to make a copy of your driver's license and social security card, and then we can get you into the computer system."
He handed Bulma the identification, and she went to the back to make copies. When she was done, she came back up front only to find Marron hanging all over
Vegeta. He did not look like he was enjoying the attention, but at the same time, he wasn't stopping her either.
Bulma rolled her eyes again (how many times is that today?) and wondered why she was surprised.
"I should've known better than to leave you two alone," she said raising an eyebrow.
She handed Vegeta his cards back and finished entering his information in the computer.
"Okay be here at 5 tomorrow."
Vegeta nodded and decided to pick out a movie before going home.
