Chapter One: Pick up the pieces

Vegeta flicked his eyes over at Juuhachi-gou. The android was staring at the waste pile where west city once stood. Her gaze was different than the prince's piercing stare. Her eyes had a look of cold hard fact. Emotionless. He couldn't see Marron in their depths; he couldn't see anything, not even pain. Vegeta heard once that eyes were the window to a person's soul.

Bullshit. He tore his own obsidian pools away from the android and stepped forward. This had been his home for decades. Vegeta couldn't help the lump that rose in his throat when he caught sight of Capsule Corps. Computer parts and slabs of tile were strewn over the upturned lawn. Black scorch marks marred what was left of the walls, and water was flowing out of a broken pipe. Vegeta felt an ache in his stomach, as if he had not been the one to destroy the place only minutes before.

Vegeta spotted a piece of white material snagged on a rock. He picked it up and brought it to his nose….Bulma….the smell intoxicated his senses, and brought a wave of emotion over him. He was clinging to his memories, they were all that kept him sane. He walked back to where Juuhachi-gou stood staring at the scene with unfocused eyes.

“Are you starting a collection?” She asked without looking at him, Vegeta shoved the blood splattered black glove further down into his pocket, then added the white silk to it. He sniffed and took off into the air. Juuhachi-gou followed moments later. The pair flew over the city searching for anything, and nothing…some place to spend the next few moments, to fill the next day.

The android and the prince were seated around a crackling fire in the middle of city. It was night time, finally. The pair waited each day for it to end, then each night for the next one to begin. Juuhachi-gou passed Vegeta a leg and he took it and ate it slowly. He savored its taste, knowing he would not get meat this good for a long time. They were running out of food, and exhausting what few resources the planet still contained. They needed to get off the dismal rock and go…Vegeta didn't know, anywhere.

He glanced over at his companion. She still had a faraway look in her eyes, she hadn't spoken for the past week, but, when he thought about it, Vegeta realized there was no point. They anticipated each others needs and cooperated well without words. Still, he was used to companionship with outspoken women. As far as he knew, Marron was the least verbal woman he had ever met, and even she vocalized her mind.

Marron…

“What happened to the others?” Vegeta asked to get his mind of the young woman. Moments stretched out in silence until Vegeta was sure that she wasn't going to answer.

“Someone panicked.” She stated. “One man was sure he was without disease, and took it upon himself to rid the world of it. He died shortly after.” Vegeta nodded, he didn't ask if the man died from the disease. Her tone suggested that it was her who killed him. Vegeta would have done the same thing if some weakling had started shooting at him.

“Why are you unaffected by the disease,” Vegeta asked, not really interested in the answer.

“I am an android. I was built for perfection. I have immunities to all diseases.” Vegeta focused his eyes into the fire. All diseases? A surge of anger shot through him. He clenched onto the bone of the leg until it snapped. Why didn't Marron have those same immunities? He had let himself feel one last time, only to have her die…

*-*-*-*
He met her eyes with a heated gaze, lowering his eyes and watching as she peeled off her lacy black bra and underwear with grace and finesse. There was a moment's pause before he moved, reaching forward to pull her into his arms and kiss her once more, this time with more eagerness then before. Marron pushed against him, eager for the pleasure that she knew would come from his touch.
In a swift movement he rolled her over so that she laid with her back on the grass. Their eyes met with a clash and they shared a moment of understanding before Vegeta positioned himself and thrust into her, sliding into her fully before pausing to make sure she was comfortable.
"Is this what you want?" His voice was a harsh whisper, and though Marron knew that he didn't really care about the answer she was grateful that he had asked. It at least gave the illusion of a normal reality. She arched her back ever so slightly, urging him to go deeper into her warmth.
"It's the last thing I want…and it's the only thing I want" Although her words would have confused any other man, Marron's eyes clashed with his and a frizzle of knowledge passed between them. Vegeta could see that her eyes weren't as clear as they had been, and he resisted the urge to scream his rage at the world for allowing him to share this moment with her.
This should have been the start of their relationship - not the end.

It must be her weakling father, Vegeta thought viciously, pulling himself away from the painful memory. She was half of him after all. Vegeta sniffed and sensed something coming. At the same time 18 flicked her eyes upwards. The pair waited silently, both preparing themselves for a relief from the monotony of the situation.

The Prince threw down what was left of the leg into the fire. He looked over at the dismembered meal. He lifted a ki-blast and incinerated what couldn't be used, her blonde head of hair and petite, yet strong bones. As Vegeta stood over the new fire, Juuhachi-gou came over and threw the arm bone she had picked clean into the flames that were all that was her daughter.

The two had, by unspoken agreement eaten her last. She was all that was left of the feeling in their souls. Vegeta sighed inaudibly. The prince was not supposed to ever have loved, but he did, many times. Names flew through his head….Trunks, Bra, Bulma, Marron. It wasn't supposed to be that way. He clenched his fists, lost in his anger. He was supposed to be the strongest, but he gave it up, and for what? His family? They were dead now, gone where he could not follow, no, where he would not follow.

Juuhachi-gou was lost in her own thoughts, staring straight into the eyes of her only daughter. It was beyond comprehension for her…was it really the same girl that she had held as a baby? The same girl that had loved her, despite what she was? Juuhachi-gou was a killing machine, literally, destined to be an integral part of the destruction of earth. That girl in the flames was the product of the feelings she never should have had for that weak pint-sized man. And for all the anger and loathing she felt for them, she couldn't help the feeling that she had failed them.

She looked at directly at Vegeta, and the prince stared back. Her eyes were the same cold emotionless blue, but a single tear betrayed her, running down her cheek and hitting the floor, almost audibly. Vegeta nodded, understanding. They had failed their families, and though they could not purge themselves of the memories, they would not fail to reach their destinies.

I'm tired of being what you want me to be
feeling so faithless lost under the surface.
I don't know what you're expecting of me
put under the pressure of walking in your shoes.
Every step that I take is another mistake to you.

I've become so numb I can't feel you there;
I've become so tired, so much more aware;
I'm becoming this, all I want to do is be more like me
and be less like you.

Can't you see that you're smothering me,
holding to tightly afraid to loose control?
Because everything that you thought I would be
is falling apart right in front of you.

Every step that I take is another mistake to you,
and every second I waste is more than I can take

I've become so numb I can't feel you there;
I've become so tired, so much more aware;
I'm becoming this all, I want to do, is be more like me
and be less like you.

And I know I may end up failing too,
still I know, that you were just like me
with someone disappointed in you.

I've become so numb I can't feel you there;
I've become so tired, so much more aware;
I'm becoming this, all I want to do, is be more like me
and be less like you.

I've become, I can't feel you there
I've become, I can't feel you there
