Chapter 1: The Black Swan
She looks down over the cliff at the jagged rocks that lay below. She can feel the cool breath that blows upon her face. The time is right and everything falls into place as she leans over the edge. The plummet happens in slow motion and the silk red dress that flows behind her is flapping gently as the ground begins to speed closer to her. Then blackness takes place.
Pan opened her eyes and slowly rose from her bed into a sitting position. It was one of her favorite dreams. One with a bittersweet ending. She'd always wanted to try it, to let herself go and feel truly free on the way down. Finally deciding she had spent enough time laying in bed, Pan left the comfort of her bed and got ready for school.
The deep cuts she had inflicted upon herself the night before had scabbed over and felt tender when she touched them. She stepped into the shower and began to scrub at her skin until it was red. After she cleaned her skin, Pan stepped out of the shower. Looking amongst the long sleeved shirts, baggy sweaters and long skirts, Pan finally decided on what to wear. Her ensemble consisted of a dark grey, long sleeved shirt with holes for her thumbs to slip through. The skirt she wore was also a dark grey and had two slits that stopped just below the beginning of her thighs. As she headed for the door, she grabbed her grey shoes that had squared two inch heels on them and her messenger bag. She brushed her hair on the way to the kitchen and stopped when she noticed for the first time that there was an extra ki in the house.
"Trunks." She whispered in realization.
Cautiously making her way to the kitchen, she suppressed her ki as she peeked around the corner. Pan's expression changed to confusion when her eyes didn't see him.
'Where'd he go?' She threw her senses out in a rush to find him and stilled when she felt a body press against her back.
"Were you looking for me?" A husky voice breathed into her ear.
A shiver ran up her back as she took a moment to recognize the voice.
"Trunks?" She whispered out in question.
"Correct."
"Why are you here?"
"I came to see the black swan."
"Black swan?"
"Mm hm..." He breathed in the scent of her hair.
"Why do you need to see me when you have Marron?" Pan whispered with no emotion in her voice.
Trunks sighed inwardly. She had frozen again. As much as he tried to melt her frigid form and heart, it seemed he couldn't even warm it. He released her at once and took a step back.
"I came to see you because I've been concerned." He frowned slightly.
"There's nothing to be concerned about. Now go, I have to get ready for school." Pan turned and walked into the kitchen.
Try as she might though, she simply couldn't concentrate on eating as she thought about the conversation that had just taken place. Why was Trunks so seemingly worried about her all of a sudden? It's not like she had just changed over night. She had been this way for quite some time. Come to think of it, when had she suddenly changed into the morbid person she was today? High school? No, it went back further than that. Around the time that dad changed. She remembered him suddenly coming home in terrible moods and seemed to be in a deep depression. That's when he began taking his anger out on her. She really did want him to get help and get his uncontrollable anger in check, but it wasn't like he could just be sent to a psychologist. He was a saiyan and as such had saiyan issues he needed to work through. No psychologist could understand that. She considered telling one of the others, but who would believe her? Gohan was respected by all who knew him. She, on the other hand, was known as his little gothic daughter. She had no respectable credibility and was sure the others would just think she was lashing out. It seemed the only way she'd be getting out of this situation any time soon was to finish her last year of high school and move out. If...if her grandpa were still alive, he would have come to her rescue long ago. He was gone though, he's been dead for years and wasn't coming back this time. She looked at the clock and instead of freaking out about the fact that she only had ten minutes to get to school, she reaction was something along the lines of, 'Oh well, guess I'm gonna be late today.'
She walked out of the kitchen noticed that her unwanted guest was still sitting in the living room.
"What do you want now?" Pan stopped at the door and slipped into her shoes.
"What are you doing this afternoon?" He stood and walked over to her.
"Busy." She walked out of the house and took to the sky.
"Busy with...?" Trunks caught up quickly.
"Band's getting together for practice." Pan rolled her eyes at his persistence.
"You're in a band? You never mentioned that. How about later then?"
"You never asked. Have to come straight home." She focused on her entrance plan for school.
Now that she was late she couldn't just land anywhere. She had to land farther away.
"You're almost an adult and you still have a curfew?" Trunks stopped in front of her.
"Look! It's none of your business if I have a curfew or not! Now get out of my way, I'm already late and now I have to figure out how to get in there without people noticing that I just flew in!" Pan stressed as she rubbed her eyes in frustration.
"Is that why you're so grumpy this morning?" Trunks went behind Pan and began massaging her temples.
"No! I'm always a grumpy bitch. You and everyone else know that..." Pan sighed as she grew relaxed from Trunks' ministrations.
"Bitch? Now why would you call yourself that? Sure every woman acts like that once in a while, but you haven't acted like one enough to earn the title." He soothed on as he touched her temples gently and continued putting slight pressure to them.
Pan was so relaxed that she couldn't quite remember what she was supposed to be doing.
"So will you meet me later tonight? You need to unwind."
"I...I told you I can't. Dad get furious when I'm not home when he expects me to be." Pan confided a small part of her biggest fear without even realizing it.
"He does? Well, why don't you just let me come to your bands practice? I'd love to hear you play."
Pan's relaxation left her at once the moment those words left his mouth. She pushed him away from her.
"Nice touch you have there. Trying to get me with that massage. I don't know what you want with me lately, but I'm not falling for it. Now if you'll excuse me I really have to go." She flew away from him and didn't look back until she reached the park.
'Well, it doesn't look like I'll be getting to school at all today.' She walked around and breathed in the fresh air.
She spent a couple of hours there, until her stomach began to growl.
'That's right, I didn't really have much of a breakfast this morning.' Pan walked to the nearest diner and sat down.
While she was there she had the oddest feeling that she was being watched.
'You're just being paranoid...' She scolded herself, until she caught the eye of a middle aged man.
He was decked out in expensive attire and seemed to be appraising her, as if he wanted to buy her or something. Pan, never being one to take that kind of treatment, stood and approached the man.
"Excuse me, but I couldn't help but notice that you keep staring at me. Is there something I can do for you?" Pan smiled sweetly at the older man.
'If this bastard tries something he'll be wearing a lovely shade of coffee on his lap.' Pan smirked inwardly.
"I do apologize. It's just that I couldn't help but notice your exquisite beauty. I work in the commercial business and I've been under pressure to find someone for a perfume commercial. You would be perfect for the part and that is why I have been staring at you. Again I apologize if my stare disturbed you. You really should come to the screen tests.
"Why would I want to do that?" Pan wasn't exactly buying the man's story, anyone could of told her what he just said.
"Because I'm very sure that you would get the job. It's a very handsome pay." He hands her his card.
"Oh it is eh?" Pan looks at the card and cocks an eyebrow.
"You legit?"
"I can see you don't hold anything back. Yes, I assure you I am most 'legit' as you say." He chuckled at her brash nature.
"Hm...perhaps I will take you up on this offer. Just don't be surprised if I don't." Pan turned and went back to her table.
The man only smiled at her seemingly rough exterior.
'Ahh...another star in the making.'

Pan went to practice at the designated time and as soon as it was over, she flew back in record time to her house. When she entered she braced herself for the beating she knew she would receive. It didn't matter if she was home early or not, her dad always found a reason to beat her.
To her surprise, nothing. The place was dead. She walked through the living room and stopped in the kitchen. Finding the light switch, she flipped it on and looked around for anything that might help her figure out where her parents had disappeared to.
"Ah ha!" Spotting a note on the table, she picked it up and read it:
Pan, your father and I have gone out for a relaxing evening. Please take care of yourself and go have some well deserved fun. I will tell your father that you're over at CC, regardless of whether you are or not.
Love,
your mother
"Hm... very uncharacteristic like of mom to do something like that. Maybe she just didn't feel like cleaning any cuts today." Pan crumpled the note and thought on her options.
She could get together with her buds and party at their house, but she doubted their parents would appreciate that. Well, Pierce's parents probably wouldn't have a problem with it, they'd probably supply the booze. She didn't really feel like partying though. She then thought on that bastard Trunks. She supposed she could go and see how they were doing at CC. Training in the gravity room would help her think and work out her stress.
"Yeah, I'll go there. But first let me change and check on that old guy." Pan walked up to her room and sat down at the computer.
"He was probably just talkin' shit." She looked up the name on the card and was astonished when twelve pages popped up as results.
Practically every site in the search mentioned his name and his credibility seemed solid.
"Well, looks like I'll be working in a commercial." Pan smirked confidently.
