Chapter 3: Honor
"Ok Dende now wish Piccalo to the planet Namek." Krillin said as he stood in the glow of the giant dragon. It was so different than the dragon he was used to seeing on earth. Earth's dragon was long and sleek, thin like a straw. This one was straight out of Arabian legend, large, muscular and powerful. And like the genies of those stories, he too lingered in the sky, waiting to grant the wishes of the three gathered below. "Did it work? Where is he?" Krillin ventured, the wish had been made where was Piccalo?
"Yeah, maybe we should ask him again." Gohan pitched in, disappointment clearly marking his face at the failed appearance of his hero.
"No guys! If he says he's here, then he's here ok? We're the ones that screwed up." Dende said a bit franticly, not wishing to upset the creature that held so much power over his planet, even if he was rarely seen. As Gohan and Krillin discussed the next wish, Dende saw their worst fears were quickly becoming a reality. "Oh...no...!" he managed to grasp, his eyes locked on the figure unable to break away.
"What-" Krillin asked turning to look at what had Dende so spooked. And then they saw him. Standing on the crest of the hillside, white-gloved fists clenched in rage and the telltale vein protruding from his forehead, was a very enraged Vegeta. "Shit." He said simply, as if reading from a college text.
"You all look very surprised to see me." Vegeta growled through clenched teeth, trying to keep his voice from exploding in rage. "How dare you try to summon the dragon behind my back! Look at everything I've done for you sorry earthlings! Saved your lives, helped that pathetic fool Kakarot, given you new clothes and for what? To be betrayed the minute my back was turned? You will pay for your insolence!" he bellowed, stalking toward them like a rabid animal, fire and destruction flashing in his eyes.
"But, we've only used two wishes, you said you only wanted one right? Take the last one! It's all yours!" Gohan managed to shake out, his mind already showing the intelligence he would one day utilize.
"Really." Vegeta said, smirking. "Tell that dragon to grant me immortality!" he said to Dende, grabbing the young Namek by the collar and glowering into his face.
"No! I won't do it!" he spat back forcefully, glaring at Vegeta with all the courage he could muster.
"Dende! Do it! Please!" Krillin said, fearing for the Namek's life and his own. Giving in reluctantly, he called out the words to grant immortality to one of the most feared warriors in Frieza's army. As the words left his mouth, the dragon balls whirled into the air, circling around the base of the dark green lizard. The red, glowing eyes of the dragon had faded to nothing but black pits. The dragon balls turned into spheres of white stone and fell to the ground.
"What just happened?" Krillin asked confused. Gohan met the puzzled look on his friend's face before turning back to Vegeta. He had released Dende and was studying his gloved hands, if the answer to his question lie in them.
"Am I immortal or not? I don't feel any different..." he said out loud, mostly to himself.
"No. You're not. Guru is dead." Dende sobbed, running his fingers through the dirt of his home planet. Krillin placed a hand on the boy's shoulder, trying his best to comfort him.
Running up the hill, Bulma could see the huge dragon that the Namek dragon balls had produced. Even in all her times of summoning the dragon on earth, he was an awe-inspiring sight. Suddenly, the dragon was gone in a rippling of heat waves, the sky returning to its sea green color. Wrinkling her brow in confusion, she poked her head over a rock to see the clearing below. Krillin and Gohan were both there, talking softly to a young boy that looked like a small version of Piccalo. She saw Vegeta, her lower body tightening as her eyes roamed over his face. He was staring in what could only be classified as disbelief at the three small beings on the ground.
"What? You mean when that old guy dies, the dragon disappears?"
"Yes." Dende choked through sobs as Gohan hugged his friend.
"FUCK!" Vegeta screamed. Regaining his composure a bit, his eyes
turned angry. "And if you three hadn't decided to fuck me over, I'd be immortal right now. I'm going to kill you all." He said, advancing on them once again. Bulma's heart jumped into her throat upon hearing them. This couldn't be the same man who had kissed her with such abandon last night. She tried to scream for him to stop, but her voice was lost frozen in disbelief.
They cringed as he walked toward them, waiting for the blows that would certainly end them all. But they never came. Tentatively opening one eye, Krillin saw Vegeta frozen in his tracks, staring up at something behind them. Turning he saw Frieza staring at them, eyes full of more murderous rage than Vegeta was ever capable of.
Nothing seemed to stop Frieza. He had gone through transformation after transformation, and now was nothing but an uncontrollable monster. The fight with Piccalo had done little, barely even scratched his body armor. And now Vegeta took the field again, ready to fight. He watched Frieza intently, his muscles tense from the memories of years of torment under him. The monster had inflicted nothing but pain on Vegeta for his own sadistic pleasure. He had killed his father, raped his mother, destroyed his planet and reduced him to nothing more than a highly valued lackey. And he would pay dearly for it. He attacked.
The fight went on forever, riddled with the sounds of bones cracking and flesh being pounded into nothing more than pulp. Bulma was not only spectator hidden amongst the rocks, all of Frieza's soldiers had come to watch him battle the prince. She watched them as they flickered across the sky, praying to any god she could think of that Vegeta would come out alive after this was all done.
As the fighters broke away from each other, a small shimmer of blue from between the rocks caught his eye. Looking quickly, he saw her, her face frozen in apprehensive fear and her large eyes locked on him. Frieza sucker punched him in the stomach, sending a spray of crimson blood into the air.
"It is time to end this Vegeta. No matter how hard you fight me, I'll kill you and everyone else on this pathetic planet. It's not a big deal, I did it to your planet didn't I?" Frieza said, pushing the prince backwards. Vegeta floated holding his stomach, watching memories flicker across his eyes. His mother, lying naked in a pool of her own blood, dying from what Frieza had just done to her. His father's body floating in space jettisoned from the ship after Frieza killed him. Echoes of humiliating words bounced off the memories, flashing the beatings that Frieza had given him as a small child. Finally he saw Bulma, her body arched and shuddering against his, glistening with sweat. Her face contorted into a scream as he saw the tyrant wrap his slithering arms around her frame, ripping her from Vegeta's arms and disappearing in an explosion of blood. Vegeta opened his eyes as righted himself. He was not going to let Frieza go unpunished for what he had done to his parents and he was not going to allow him the opportunity to hurt anyone else.
"It ends here Frieza." He said quietly, his power beginning to radiate in waves off his body. "Your time has come. You pay for your crimes NOW!" he screamed as he broke, finally passing the barrier he had known about for so long. His hair went white blonde, his eyes the same aqua as Bulma's hair. "Here it is Frieza! This is what you've feared since the day I was born. The prophecies are true! I AM A SUPER SAIYAN!" he said, charging toward him.
Frieza lay on the ground, bloody from his battle with Vegeta. The prince stood over him, smirking down at him.
"The beating I just gave you was for my planet and my parents."
"Vegeta...you aren't..." Frieza managed, as Vegeta kneeled beside his body.
"I want you to know that I never liked you, I spent my entire life waiting for this moment, to see you at my feet battered beyond recognition. Finally the day is here. You sealed your own fate all those years ago by keeping me alive." Frieza opened his good eye and looked at him, fear very evident. "And this, this Frieza is for me." He whispered, plunging his fist into his chest, he grabbed hold of his spinal column and pulled it out of his body. Frieza shuttered one last time and lie still, his end had finally come.
Soldiers came down from the rocks, bowing before Vegeta. They waited for him to speak. He released his hold on Super Saiyan, looking at the men at his feet.
"Go back to the capital. Tell the soldiers there they no longer serve Frieza, tell them the prophecy has been fulfilled, a Super Saiyan has emerged. I, Prince Vegeta, heir to the royal throne of Vegetasei have defeated Frieza and will return to claim my rightful place as ruler of the empire." He said. Silence filled the air, as all they could do was stare at him.
"And you, Lord Vegeta? Will you be returning with us?" one soldier said quietly.
"I will leave this planet in 12 hours. I have some business to attend to," he said, picking up Frieza's corpse and heading back to his ship.
