[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]

It was a cool, sunny day in the small town of Ginger. The people there were polite and cheerful, always around to help one another. There was one particular woman who lived there. She was known for her demeanor. The woman was young and tall with her wavy, long hair, the color of the silver crescent moon, and her deep ocean blue eyes. The woman was the exact opposite of the people in Ginger Town.

The citizens were kind and polite; she was mean and cruel. The citizens had nice jobs with good pay; she had a tough job with a bossy manager who paid her little. The citizens were nicely dressed in clean pressed suits or dresses; she was clad like some kind of gangster. The girl was cold and distant, not wanting or needing anyone's help for she was placed in the Loner's category. Her name was Mandy, but she went by-

"VEX! Get you're lazy ass back in here!!" The large, smoke-smelling manager shouted from within his office. Vex worked at an automobile workshop with grease-covered co-workers and their sick sense of humor.

"Vex!! I know you heard me, now damnit get in here!!!" The manager stomped out of his office and into the garage. He looked around the oil-coated room and seeing nothing, but the cars and the men who were working on them.

"Uh, sir?" The manager turned to one of his workers. The boy was tall and muscular and was covered in oil and grease from head-to-toe. The manager growled, biting down on his thick, coffee colored cigar.

"What?! Can't ya see I'm busy?" The boy shrunk back a bit, fearing his boss. He lifted a quivering finger, pointing past the angry man.

"I-I think Vex is-is ou-outside s-s-ir!" The big man huffed and stomped outside. Sure enough he found Vex leaning against the building's wall with one leg crossed over the other and her thumbs jammed inside the front pockets of her jeans.

"Vex! God damnit! How many times have I told you to stop slacking off?! You can't just give yourself a break whenever ya want! We have a line of cars that need to be fixed!! I'm not about to lose my shop because some punk-ass girl refused to do her job!!!" By now, Vex's boss was red faced with steam fuming out his ears.

Vex, not staring at her angry boss, pushed herself from the wall and spit out the toothpick she had recently placed in her mouth. Vex turned slightly, giving her boss an icy stare and mumbled, "Listen, I can take breaks whenever I want. The only reason I'm working for this lousy job is cause you needed more people and personally I don't really give a flip whether you lose the business or not!" Vex calmly strode past her boss and back inside the garage.

The men whistled approvingly at Vex for her cool comeback. No one had the guts to stand up to their boss like she could. The only reason she could though was because she, along with her boss and everyone else, knew that she was the best mechanic in town. Her boss just couldn't afford to give her up without risking his whole business.

"Hey, Vex mind if we talked?" Asked one of the men.

"No."

He was handsome with slick blond her and piercing green eyes. He always had a thing for Vex, but whenever he tried to hit on her she would either push him away or pretended he didn't exist.

Vex slid herself under one of the cars and started to twists bolts here and attach wires there. She was doing it again. Ignoring him.

"Vex--"

"Beat it Todd!" She shouted from under the car. Todd growled, walking back to his own station. Vex slid out from under the automobile and walked to the front, lifting the squeaky hood. She picked up her red flashlight and switched it on. As she shone the light inside the car, checking for any oil leaks, Vex could have sworn she had heard screaming.

"Hey, dude what was that?" One of the other men asked. Obviously Vex wasn't the only one. She flicked the light off and slammed the hood shut. Along with everyone else, Vex ran outside to see what the commotion was. At first they didn't see anything, but then they saw at least a hundred people stampeding their way!

"What hell is goin' on?!!" Vex shouted. She quickly got out of the way as they charged past the shop. She tried nicely to get someone to stop, but she soon lost her patients. Vex reached out and grabbed the nearest shirt that came within range.

"Alright you! I'm only gunna ask once. What's with the marathon?!!" The man looked franticly in the direction he had been coming from.

"P-p-please! Let me go!! It's h-huge!" Vex scowled and gripped the man's collar tightly with both hands and brought him to her face.

"Speak english man! What's huge?!!"

"The monster!! NOW LET GO!!!" The desperate man backhanded Vex hard, making her drop him.

"ARGH! You son-of-a--!!!" She stopped and held her face gently. She brought her hand down and growled. There was blood smeared into her palm. The man had cut her with his ring. Vex automatically turned to a woman's scream. She gasped at what she saw.

A tall, green insect looking being stood over an old woman with it's black spotted tail in her back. Vex watched helplessly as the monster sucked the life out of the woman until everything was gone except for her clothes.

"Holy shit! Lets get outta here!!!" Vex heard Todd shout. She watched from the corner of her eye with a sneer as her co-workers ran like rabbits.

"Cowards!" She turned back to stare at the monster. To her horror, the thing was staring straight back! Vex backed away slowly, totally freaked as it's gazed pierced hers. The corners of its yellow beak-like mouth turned up into a definite smirk.

"Oh, this is nice. I'm the only gal left in town with an eight-foot bug to keep company me!"
