Chapter 3: Evolution

~*~*~*~*~*~

Sarah's eyes slowly flickered open. She yawned and stretched her aching limbs, feeling soft, mushy blankets brush against her as she moved. Wait…blankets? She sat up, brow furrowed in confusion. Looking around, she found herself in a tidy little bedroom, sitting on a Japanese futon bed with blankets wrapped around her. The room was small but spacious. The walls were pained a soft honey colour with frosted net curtains covering the one window. To the right of the bed was a huge oak wardrobe and the far end of the room, a dresser with a swivel mirror on top.

It was obvious the room belonged to a boy as there was several posters of models in bikinis and about 5 skateboards, each with the artistic underside showing, were mounted on the wall. Sarah slowly got up from the bed and walked around the room, wondering how she got there. The door suddenly opened, alerting her to her senses. She spun around on her heels as a tall boy entered the room.

He was'nt much older than Sarah herself, around 17 at the very least. The first thing Sarah noticed about him was his eyes. They were a deep sapphire blue in colour and they seemed to hypnotise her. Another thing she noticed was that the boy was incredibly cute.

He had short lavender hair cut to his ears with two long strands hanging in his eyes. His skin was lightly tanned and he was generously muscular. He was dressed in nothing but a pair of blue and white stripped pjamma bottoms and it was all the raven haired teen could do to hide the blush that had flashed across her face.

"Aaah! You're awake!" the boy said, giving her a shy smile. Sarah looked down at her bare feet to avoid drooling over his perfectly chiseled chest. She rubbed the back of her head sheepishly and giggled.

"Um…yes… who are you, by the way?"

The boy slapped himself and held out a hand. "Oh! Sorry! I'm Trunks Brief. I'm the one who rescued you from that……thing.."

"You mean Cell….what happened… did you find him?"

Trunks shook his head.

"Nope…..he got away before I had the chance to kill him. But don't worry, you'll be safe her Ms…..?"

Sarah looked up and blushed again. "Sarah Margera…. Nice to meet you."

Trunks smiled again. He set down a bundle of clothes on the bed and turned to leave the room. "Those are some of Mom's old hand me downs. Once you're dressed, come downstairs. Mom wants to speak with you."

Sarah nodded and watched as he left the room, closing the door behind him. Brow furrowing in confusion, she turned to the pile on the bed. How long had she been out and what exactly happened during that time? More importantly…. What happened to Cell?

Sarah dared not think of what he might be up to… she shuddered to think of him killing innocent men, women and children in the quest to achieve perfection. Sighing heavily, she rummaged through the pile for something to wear. She quickly peeled off her grubby sweatshirt and tattered trousers, exchanging them for a blue bat-wing top that fitted her perfectly and a pair of orange gi pants that hung low on her hips. Running her hands through her wavy, jaw length ebony locks, she glanced out the window, onto the street below.

She wondered how long it would be before Cell tracked down the androids. She shuddered at the thougth.

Walking away from the window, she exitted the room and walked down the corridor untill she came to a large stair case at the end.

She walked downstairs and glanced around the hall. It was pretty normal looking, the floor wood pine and chipped in several places. There was a large thread-bare carpet in the centre, with the pattern of a zodiac sun on it and several cracked photoframes hung on the magnolia walls.

She say Trunks emerge from an archway leading into the kitchen, dressed in a pair of black sweatpants and a dark blue tank top. He motioned for her to follow him as he made his way down a corrior to his right, coming to a large steel door that was locked with a voice identification secirity system.

He entered his name into the identification scan and the slid open. It lead onto a small metal staircase which lead down to what appeared to be an aircraft carriercome laboritory. A woman was busy working on some unseen invention, her back to them both. In the dim light, Sarah could see a head of long, aquamarine hair tied into a messy ponytail. At the sound of footsteps, the woman turned around.

She did'nt appear much older than 42 at the least. Dark sapphire eyes glistened from under thin rimmed glasses, a soft smile gracing her face.

"Finally woke up, I see? The results of the blood tests came back." She said, getting up from her seat. She picked up a sheet of paper from the desk nearby and crossed the laboritory. Sarah suddenly felt anger surge inside her. Obviously, this woman had taken some of her blood while she was out cold and this did little to ease her mind of what might have happened…

Noticing the surging in her ki, Trunks quickly placed himself between the two women. "You were bleeding blue blood when I brought you here. It was only natural to do a blood test to see what you were.."

Sarah relexed slightly. He did have a point after all. How often did one incounter a strange near-albino girl with blue blood?

Bulma leaned against a large, steel operating table in the centre of the room, staring down at the results in her hand with a peculiar look on her face. She took off her glasses and wiped them on the front of her green sweatshirt before replacing them back on her nose.

"Very peculiar.." she said, glancing at Sarah, who suddenly felt like a lab rat.

Bulma walked around the raven haired girl, surveying her closely, her sapphire eyes wandering over every aspect of her body. After a few moments of studying the girl, she cleared her throat loudly and cast her attention back to the results in hand.

"Well, miss…" she started.

"Sarah." The teenager told her, in a deapan voice.

Bulma nodded and cleared her throat again.

"Yes… well, Sarah… you have some…er…UNIQUE aspects to your DNA. I've found various genes inside of you, belonging to some of the most ruthless beings to ever live. From the blood sample I studied, it appears you have the genes of Frieza, Zarbon… Dordoria, Brolli and Cooler…I've also managed to isolate several genes that play a role in your apearance."

Sarah listened intently, leaning against the wall with her arms folded.

"20 % of your genetic make-up consists of Frieza's cells which is the reason you're so pale… another 20 % belong to Zarbon, explaining your eye color…but what fascinates me is the amout of Saiyen cells in your DNA. Nearly 55% is composed of Goku and Gohan's genes, while the rest is made of the others….that amout of genes in your DNA means you are a direct blood reletive of Goku..almost as if you were his daughter." Bulma said.

Sarah arched an eyebrow. "So…you're sayin' this Goku guy is my father?"

Bulma ajusted her glasses. "In a sense, yes. You are related by blood-"

But Trunks interupted. "Wait.. if she's more Saiyen than anything else, why did here aura turn red instead of gold when she powered up?"

Sarah glanced at him, brow furrowed in confusion. She'd been wanting an answer to that particular question herself….

The older woman stroked her chin and stared down at the paper in her hand.

"It's possibly something she inherited from Frieza's DNA. If I recall, he had a red ki aura at some point or another…in any case, I'd like to study her genetic make up in more detail.."

The raven haired teen's eyes narrowed. She shook her head warily, hands clenching into fists by her side.

"No…the last time I heard THAT, I was almost bug bait..and I'm not a lab rat. I may not be completely human, but I'm still a living being and thus should be treated like one!" she practically yelled, causing Bulma to jump in alarm.

Trunks placed a hand on Sarah's shoulder. "Hey! Relax! She only wants to run through your blood cultures again. That means extracting a blood sample. Nothing more." He felt her tense beneath him at the mention of 'blood extraction'. A gulp resounded from her throat as she turned to look at him.

"Please tell me this does'nt involve a needle…"

Elsewhere, Cell watched from the shadows of a dark alleyway, surveying the citzens of Hope City, noticably more nervous than before, giving to to the fact that there was a homicidal killer grasshopper on the loose. He was a lot stronger than before, having absord an entire town along the way here.

Hope City was the place where Androids Seventeen and Eighteen were last spotted. He smirked to himself as a passerby got just a little TOO close..

SHRAK!!

Within minutes, the hapless teenager was nothing more than a pile of clothes lying on the pathway. The screams of the fellow townfolk was like music to his ears. Emerging from his hiding place, he took to the sky, scanning the area for any sign of a high power level. Sure enough, there was a signal about 12 miles east, in the woodlands boarding the city. With his adept speed, he was soon able to pin point Seventeen's ki signal, but just as he hoomed it on it, it dropped dramatically down to nothing. Puzzled, the reptilian android landed in a clearing shaded by a high cliff. Just visable in the cliff-face was a set of steel double doors, the Red Ribbon Army insignia cast in raised letters above the biggest mail slot Cell had ever seen in his life.

With supprisingly little effort, he managed to blast a hole in the doors big enough to let himself in. Walking inside, he followed the cavern deep into the heart of rock untill he reached a man hole in the ground, a ladder just visable within.

Surrounding himself with white ki flames, he levitated down the man hole and dropped silently to the ground. His accute hearing picked up the voice of what was unmistakably Dr.Gero. He was laughing menacing to himself. Cell thought nothing of it untill he came closer to the laboritory doors.

"…Foolish androids! How dare they disobey me! Had I not shut them down completely, they would have surely destroyed the laboritory…."

Cell's eyes widdened. He could'nt believe what he just heard. The androids had been shut down! That ment there was no hope of him ever achieving perfection. His hands clenched into fists by his sides, anger surging through him. Dr.Gero would pay dearly for this. He let out a growl of frustration and punched a hole in the stone wall, sending bits of rock raining down on his head.

The sound of Cell's fist connecting with the wall sent Dr.Gero racing out of his lab to see what the fuss was. His eyes nearly popped out of his head when he saw Cell.

"I…Incredible! In such a short amount of time, you've evolved faster than any being I have ever-URK!" The doctor was immidiatly cut off by Cell's hand crushing his windpipe.

"You shut down the others…. Ruined my chance of perfection!! Now you will pay!" Cell growled, tail swishing behind him. It came up over his head as the stinger aimed for Dr.Gero's heart. A loud, blood-curdling scream echoed throughout the compound as the doctor was reduced to little more than a pile of clothing and a large hat..

Feeling rejuvinated from his feed, the bio android stepped into the laboritory, looking for some solution to his problem..Alas, there was no way he could revive the androids, giving that the controller than allowed them to start up or shut down was dashed to a thousand pieces.

With a frustrated sigh, Cell slammed his fist down on an iron operating table, making a noticably large dent. He was just about to blast it to smithereens when something caught his eye-a bundle of blueprints lay haphazardly to one side of the table.

They showed, in detail, complicated plans for a time machine capsule, listing the materials needed and estimated construction time. An evil smirk crossed Cell's face as he read over the blue-prints. He could'nt have asked for a better solution!

"I don't like the sound of this…" Sarah muttered sheepishly, rubbing the back of her head as she stared at the sofa-or rather, what was left of it- before her. Apparently, Trunks had somehow destroyed it when he unintentionally turned Super Saiyen in his sleep. Giving that there was no guest room, the solution that Bulma suggested-after a harsh scolding on Trunk's part- was for the two of them to share Trunk's bed.

Sarah did not like this idea, giving that 1) she barely knew Trunks, 2) She did'nt trust herself to keep her hands to herself and 3) Bulma was obivously trying to pair them together. But then again, it WAS Trunks' bed after all and the floor was way too uncomfortable to sleep on, so she swallowed her pride and reluculently agreed.

About 15 minutes later, she was tugging one of Bulma's old ankle length nightdresses over her head, standing in front of the bathroom mirror. She gazed absently at her reflection, not truly recodnizing who was staring back at her. Only a short time ago, she had been a normal orphan girl, living a rough life in one of Trinity City's most notorious orphanages. Now, she was an android, her only purpose in life to serve as a power up for the 'ultimate perfection'.

She did'nt know what she was anymore. Sighing heavily, she ran a brush through her beach girl waves of ebony black, letting them cascade down her shoulders like an elegant movie startlet. She took a deep breath letting it out slowly.

#Who's that girl I seeee…? Staring straight…back at me? When will my reflection show…who I am.. inside..?# she sang quietly, chuckling softly to herself. With a sigh, she aggusted the soft pink night dress and exitted the bathroom, which lead into Trunks' room. He was already in bed, dressed in those blue and white stripped pjamma bottoms….without a shirt to boot. He was sitting up, a book in his hands and apparently very into it. At the sound of the bathroom door closing, he looked and gave her a weak smile. He placed a bookmark in between the pages of his book and set it down on the floor at the side of the bed.

Reluculently, Sarah climbed in bedside him. Lying on her side, she cast him a scowl.

"Okay, let me get one thing clear. If I wake up and find your hands anywhere near parts of my body they should'nt be touching…I'll kill you."

Trunks nodded. "I read you loud and clear."

Sarah nodded. "Goodnight." And with that, she turned with her back to him, mentally smacking herself for that last comment….
