Three Deadly Words

The night was lovely, with stars spattering the sky like Cheerios floating in the milk of a cereal bowl. A gentle breeze whizzed through the cropped, wind-tousled hair of Videl Satan as she leaned back in her seat and stared over the side of the car door. She heaved a long sigh of her mushrooming anxiety, fruitless in her overzealous attempts to tell him. Tell him those three terrible, terrible words.
“Gohan, I…” she began, her valor hastily dissipating as his brows drew together, and the air car came to an abrupt halt. “What?” she blinked hazily, bewilderment quickly substituting her unrest.
Gohan turned his head to her, his expression discomfited. His eyes were fixated on her shoes, however, instead of her face. As if they were the most disgusting things he’d ever seen in his entire life. Granted, they weren’t the prettiest. But they were comfortable.
Tremulously, he met her befuddled gaze and parted his lips to speak. The words, however, seemed to be lodged in his throat. “I need to tell you something…” he trailed off.
She cocked her head, apprehension rising exponentially. “Me, too.”
Simultaneously, they both blurted out those three deadly words. “I love you.”
