CHAPTER 1: FOUND BY A PRINCE
For the first time in a long time, Son Pan was crying. Her sapphire eyes were squeezed shut, the small tears leaving wet and salty trails down her face. She gritted her teeth, desperately trying to not sob out-loud. Thoughts were raging through her head, almost as though there were separate people were arguing. She recalled her mother's words-if the woman even deserved to be called mother-and felt that taking her advice would not be the best way to go. How could she bury her past, and just let everything go?
That horrible woman had never been through anything like what Pan had. She wasn't in the position to tell her what she could and shouldn't do.
The fourteen-year-old girl felt betrayed by everyone.
Her mother had abandoned her when she was barely one, claiming that she didn't have the funds to take care of Pan. Really, it was because she was too busy jumping from job to job while getting a new boyfriend each week.
Her father hadn't been there for her ever since she was born. Pan wasn't even sure if he knew she existed, and if that were the case, why hadn't her 'mother' told him?
Her grandparents, Chichi and Kakarot, felt obligated to take her in and raise her. Being their daughter's child, the least they could do was help out, right? Even if that did mean taking on the whole raising-a-child process...
And now, she'd just spilled her guts out to a man she didn't even know. She was crying at his feet, like a stupid little brat. Worst of all, he was a full-blooded Saiyan, unlike herself. She was a pathetic half-breed; why was this gentleman wasting his time with her anyway? Living on Vegetasei hadn't been very good for Pan, because of her mixed blood.
The man was quiet for a few moments, taking everything in. "Come with me, girl."
Pan looked up at him, her vision blurry from unshed tears. "H-huh?"
"I said come with me!" This time his tone wasn't as gentle. Pan staggered to her feet, wiping the tears away with the back of her gloved hand.
"Can you fly?" The man asked gruffly.
"No, sir," she hung her head. Grandpa hadn't found it worth his time to train the half-breed-likes of her. The only time she really could relieve her stress and anger was at night, when she was inside of her small, cramped room.
The man wrapped his arm around her waist, and jumped into the sky. His aura glowed a pale blue around them, keeping some of the wind from drying out their eyes. They shot over the city and an incredible speed which Pan had never experienced before. The Saiyans and alien traders below looked like pebbles sitting in some sort of trench, with the buildings and tents standing all around the road. When she looked ahead, she saw the King's grand palace looming over the tall buildings and skyscrapers of the capital.
"Are we going there?!" She yelled over the wind. "To the palace?!"
The man confirmed her guess with a curt nod of his head.
"D'you know the Prince or something?!" He looked young enough to be one of the Heir's sparring partners.
"I AM the Prince!" He turned his head a little to look at her, a smirk curving his lips. Pan's eyes widened, her mouth gaping open a little. She recognized him to be the King's son now; he had the same flaming lack hair, complete with the steep widow's peek. His eyes were nearly as cold and harsh as his father's, and his skin was a little tanner.
"G-gomen, Prince Vegeta...." Pan quickly turned her gaze from the Prince. It was not proper for dirty blood to lay eyes on the Heir of Vegetasei.
"Drop the formalities, girl," he sneered, "I obviously pity you, or else I would have had your tail cut off for blubbering like a baby to me!"
Pan's temper flared a little at this, but she kept quiet and steadied her gaze on the houses and buildings below. She still couldn't believe that the Prince was associating with her, a disgusting half-breed. Unconsciously, she curled her tail around her waist, remembering the Prince's earlier words. Pan didn't know what she would do without her tail. It was the only thing that allowed her to stay on the planet.
They landed at the palace doors, the guards glaring at the girl clinging to the Prince as he made his way into the foyer. She could her them muttering as the doors began to close behind them.
"Don't pay attention to them, Vegeta said off-handedly. "They don't know who you are."
"And you do?" Countered Pan, before she could stop herself. She glanced over at the young Prince, her eyes wide with fear.
Vegeta chuckled. "Don't worry about it. After I'm through with you, they all will."
Pan looked at him through the corner of her eye, wondering why he thought her to be special. All her life she'd been taught that she would never amount to anything. What did the Prince see in her that her family had not?
As they were passing another set of double doors, Vegeta suddenly stopped. His eyes flashing in what Pan thought was fear, he backed up against the opposite wall. He quickly motioned for her to stand behind him. She obeyed without question, and watched over the Prince's right shoulder as the pair of doors suddenly burst open.
A funny looking man was standing in the arched doorway. He was very short, and looked to be wearing some sort of helmet with two long spikes jutting out of the sides. If it was a he, anyway; the lizard-person seemed to be wearing lipstick. A long tail was dragging on the floor behind him, although Pan was pretty sure he could pick it up at any time.
"Well, if it isn't the little Prince," the alien said in a scratchy voice. "Oh, look. I see you've found yourself a little girlfriend. King Vegeta, you'd better be watching for grandkids!" He called the last sentence over his shoulder. A deep laugh echoed from within the room behind the lizard-person.
The Prince bristled in front of her, growling deep within his throat.
"I'll look forward to the day, Frieza!"
"See you later, Prince." With that, the short man strode down the hall without a second glance back. The doors slowly closed, blocking the view of the room inside.
"Who was that?" Pan wondered aloud.
"Idiot!" Vegeta whirled around to face her, a vein popping out in his temple. "That was Frieza! Promise me one thing, Pan."
"Anything for my Prin-Hey, how d'you know my name?" She glared at him accusingly.
Vegeta smirked. "Let's just say I've been waiting to run into you. Now, please, whatever you do, don't make the same mistake my father made. Don't get mixed into things with Frieza!"
Pan's curiosity was getting the better of her. "Why are you telling me this? I'm just a stupid half-breed!"
"Do you know what the other half of you is!" Demanded the Prince.
"....I can't say that I do."
"You're part human, girl! Human-Saiyan mixes are looked down upon, but if one is trained properly, they are deadlier than most full-blooded Saiyans," he hissed, his eyes glinting with a blood-thirsty joy. "Of course, I wouldn't have expected that third-class grandfather of yours to know that little secret...."
"So, you're saying that you want to train me?" She looked at him, disbelieving.
"Exactly! Don't you realize the power you could have? You could fight by my side, helping me purge planets for my father... You wouldn't be 'the dirty half-breed' anymore, you would be Pan!"
"Why would I want to be?" Pan growled. "So my mother will claim me for my wealth and status?"
"You're mother doesn't have to know." Vegeta smirked. "I can have her killed, if you like."
The teen's eyes widened, considering the offer. Then she mentally scolded herself for considering such a thing; she may have hated the woman, but she was a blood relative. Vegeta saw that she wasn't about to answer, so he turned away from her and began to walk down the hall once more.
"Wait!" Pan jogged a bit to catch up with him. "About this training...."
