Uncertain Future, Chapter 6: Fealty to the King

"How are you feeling Miss Breifs?" The same perky woman from yesterday had just woken Bulma after the process of learning to read and write Saiyan. The system was basically the same as the one she had used to learn to speak the language, except that it didn't take as long. Bulma opened her eyes groggily, trying to become accustomed to the bright light of the room she was in. She stood up, rather shakily, and thanked the woman and her assistants. "Don't forget, you will have a test today at 3:00 so that my supervisor can make sure you know enough to get by on Vegetasei."

"Don't worry, I won't." Bulma said, as she was led out of the room by a guard. To her disappointment, it was neither Keront, nor Reemer, but a female Saiyan named Kishin. She was also somewhat relieved though, to have another woman lead her. At least she would not have to suffer the dreadful silence she had with the male guards.

Kishin had explained to her that they would be allowed to talk freely without worry since they were both women. Reemer had been worried to talk to her since he was an unmated male and some members of Saiyan society may take this as innapropriate since Bulma was to go to the King. When Bulma had asked about Keront, Kishin had laughed softly and explained that he was mated, to herself. She then showed Bulma the tiny little bite marks on her right shoulder, and explained that that was how Saiyans claimed their mates.

"Doesn't getting bitten hurt?" Bulma questioned.

"A bit, but only at first. After a few seconds it actually feels really good." Kishin replied, blushing.

"What happens if you get bitten by someone who you don't want to be mated to?"

"Well, Saiyans bond." Upon seeing Bulma's confusion, she continued. "A bond is sort of like a chain, binding to souls together for eternity, at least that's how King Vegeta phrases it. But anyway, if a bond is not formed between the biter and the one getting bitten, the mark will go away within minutes. If there is a bond though, the mark will heal up and scar lightly, like the one on my shoulder." Bulma nodded.

"Is there any way that two can bond without wanting to?"

"You're a real curious one, aren't you?"

"Sorry, I can't help it. I've always been really inquisitive." Bulma shrugged.

"Well, to answer your question, no. Saiyans can't bond without liking eachother. They may not know that they like eachother, but they're in love deep down. Once a bond is formed, it is impossible to regret it. I don't know exactly how this all works, or why it is like it is. I just know it's there and it always will be. Except maybe for the King…" she trailed off.

"What do you mean?"

"Well," Kishin hesitated. "The former King of Vegetasei considered bonding a weakness. He messed around with his son's genes, trying to isolate and destroy the bonding element. Nobody really knows if it worked or not. It's terribly hard to tell, what with King Vegeta being so cold and distant. It's impossible to tell what's going on in his brain." Bulma nodded, contemplating this new bit of information. "Remember, I'll be back at 2:45 to bring you to the testing room." Bulma looked up, confused. They were already back at her quarters.

"Oh! Yeah. Bye." She allowed the security system to scan her delicate fingertips, then stepped inside the automated door as it whooshed open.

*** 3:00 - The Testing Room ***

"Well, Miss Breifs. Here is your test. This one is on reading and writing. I will be back in two hours to dictate the oral portion of your exam." Bulma shuddered, upon hearing the word 'oral'. Try as she might, she just could not seem to forget the horrible memories of the orange cloaked Yranian.

----- Author's note: Okay, I had some people really confused about the alien being orange and then purple. He was always purple, but he was wearing an orange robe. -----

Shaking her head to clear it, she focused her attention on the booklet in front of her. 'Man, I feel like I'm back in high school' she thought, then quickly cleared her mind again, trying to forget the fact that she would be graduating in 2 months if she were still on her beloved Chikyuu. 'I'll get my revenge King Orlis. I promise.' she thought angrily.

Half an hour later, she was finished her test. Another ten minutes later, she was done checking it over. 'Well.' she thought. 'Seems I have a whole hour and twenty minutes to sit here and be bored.' She looked around, unaware that video cameras were watching her every move.

Thinking that she was all alone, she got up and walked around the room, examining the many sculptures and knick-knacks displayed on small marble pedestals flanking the walls. Picking up the random piece of art to inspect it more closely she found that many had the symbol for Vegeta, and a small Saiyan number engraved into the bottom. The numbers went in chronological order, from pedestal to pedestal. "1…2…3…4…5…6…7…8…9…10 …11…12…13…14. A different King of Vegetasei must have sculpted each of these. If so, then where is Vegeta the 15th's sculpture?" she murmured to herself, remembering that the one she was to serve was number 15. "I wonder if it's not done yet?"

Just then, she caught sight of a gleaming gold statue in the very center of a glass table. "That's gotta be Vegeta's" she said to herself. She began walking towards it when she heard the sound of a throat being cleared behind her. She spun quickly to see the test-master watching her. "I…I… I'm so sorry sir." she managed to choke out. "You see, I was finished early and I was curious and…" she trailed off as he lifted his hand, signaling for silence.

"We will start the second portion of your test now." he said. "Sit back down in your chair." Bulma complied, and for the next hour, she conversed with the old Saiyan about everything from food to politics.

"Congratulations Miss Bulma. You've passed. Tomorrow, the second class Kishin will come for you and help you ready for the oath ceremony. That will be all for now." With that, he walked away motioning to a guard stationed by the wall to bring Bulma back to her quarters. She didn't even bother asking his name or rank or anything. She was far too preoccupied with Vegeta's statue. 'What could it be?' she thought. 'What could he have sculpted?"

*** The Next Day ***

"Wake up Bulma!"

"Huh? Kishin?" Bulma mumbled groggily.

"Well, who were you dreaming about girl? You were all moany and clinging to your pillow! Was little Bulma having a, dare I say it, SEX DREAM?" Bulma flushed immidiately, shaking her head in denial.

"I'm going to take a shower." she mumbled, crawling out of bed.

When she exited the steamy bathroom, Kishin was standing in the middle of her floor, holding up a plain white dress. "What's that?" Bulma asked.

"This is your ceremonial costume. It's tradition that you wear this."

"Why."

"Because you are swearing fealty to the King and then being sworn in as his housemate in 2 hours, that's why! This is practically the highest honor a non-Saiyan, new arrival can get! " Kishin growled. "Now come here and put this thing on, so I can pretty you all up for his highness."

Bulma rolled her eyes, and retreated to the safety of the bathroom to change. She slipped out of the simple cotton pj's she wore and pulled the dress on over her head. Smoothing out the wrinkles, she looked into the mirror and gasped. She was absolutely beautiful. The dress cut low over her bosom, showing an alluring amount of cleavage, while the skirt flared out at her hips and reached down to her ankes, the soft material flowing gently around her legs as she moved, like a cloud. The sleeves were long and fitted to hug her arms at the tops, but they flared out at the elbow, so she had a few extra inches that hung gracefully down. "Oh wow."

She stepped out of the bathroom, and Kishin only smiled. "You look real pretty kid." she said. "Come sit down here now, so that I can do up your hair." Bulma sat on the chair in front of her vanity and watched in the mirror as Kishin curled her hair, which reached down to about the center of her back, into loose spirals. She then handed Bulma a pair of white sandals, which she put on her dainty little feet. Bulma stood up and twirled around a bit, feeling like a princess. "Come on!" Kishin said, impatiently. "We have to get going, NOW!" Bulma frowned, but followed Kishin out of the room and down the hallway, amid stares and whoops from the male occupants of the ship.

Kishin led Bulma to the big room with all the tapestries, where she had met the prince for the second time. The doors were opened by two male guards, and Kishin stayed back while Bulma walked down an aisle of carpeting, flanked on either side by guards and members of the Kings personal staff.

"Kneel before your King, girl." said an ancient looking Saiyan, decked out in ceremonial robes. Bulma kneeled on the down. "Now repeat this phrase after me. I swear, upon my life, that my loyalty to thee is everlasting, King Vegeta. I pledge myself to thee and will serve thee for eternity."

"I swear," Bulma repeated, "upon my life, that my loyalty to thee is everlasting, King Vegeta. I pledge myself to thee and will serve thee for eternity." The old man came over and placed a chain around her neck.

"This chain represents your everlasting service to the King. Should you take it off, you shall be punished by death. You may rise." The old man turned and bowed to the King, who was seated on his throne, before exiting the room.

"You are all dismissed. You may go back to you regular duties." Vegeta said, his low, but powerful voice echoing in the enormous room.
