Uncertain Future, Chapter 24: Suspicious Behavior

"Corky, I think something's going on around here." Bulma whispered to her friend as they drank their tea. It had been a week since Vegeta left, and the Queen had noticed that her guards and servants had been unusually secretive. Even Kishin was disappearing and reappearing at the most inopportune times. She spoke in hushed tones a lot with her mate, Keront, very frequently as of late.

Strange things were happening too. A few days ago, Bulma had stumbled upon a delivery ship full of flowers from the planet Verafin. She had decided to keep quiet about it, because she knew she probably wouldn't get a straight answer. It had been a strange occurrence, for she knew of no one important who was that fond of flowers. Was it possible that Vegeta was on a different planet picking up some sort of important guest? If so, why all the secrecy?

She and Vegeta were bonded, so it couldn't be another woman…could it? He had been rather cold as he told her he was leaving, which had been strange. If it had been another woman though, why had he tried to seduce her in bed the night before he left? He really hadn't tried all that hard though…if he had she surely would have been putty in his arms.

"Bulma? Bulma? You okay?" Bulma blinked once, looking surprised at Corky. "You kinda spaced out there Bulma. Are you all right? You're not feeling sick are you?"

"N…no. I'm fine, don't worry about me. I was just thinking."

"Okay, but call me if you need anything." Corky reached over and squeezed her friend's hand. "I know you're upset because Vegeta left, but he'll be back soon so you just hang in there." Abruptly, she stood up. "I've got to go now, but I'll see you later okay?" Corky beamed and hugged Bulma.

"Is that a new perfume Corky?" Bulma asked softly. "I like it, nice and floral."

"Uh, yeah. It's nice isn't it? Bardock's sister gave it to me as a mating gift." Corky said her goodbyes once more before heading out the door.

Bulma padded over to the couch and plopped down, completely bored. "I wonder what it is that Corky has to do. Probably something for Bardock. I'm surprised that his sister would be so willing to accept Corky though…Wait a minute…" Bulma's eyes widened in confusion, as she recalled Bardock once telling her that he was an only child.

Vegeta and his crew headed towards a tiny run down building in a tiny run down town. It was a bar, the perfect place to gather information. Vegeta pushed the door open with a rusty creak, and the building fell silent. Then in a sudden rush, the room was filled with excited, yet terrified murmurs. Obviously, these people knew who he was.

Tertank had been right; this was a refugee colony. There were beings of at least 15 different races in this bar alone, and there was no telling what they'd find in larger, more developed cities. "I'm looking for someone." Vegeta began, his deep voice booming in the small building. "I thought that perhaps you could be of assistance."

"That depends on who yer lookin' for." A blue humanoid with fish scales and tentacles stepped out of the crowd. Vegeta recognized him as a Lrixion. "Cause we might not wanna tell ya." Vegeta frowned slightly; this creature's accent was beginning to annoy him, not to mention the fact that it was being very disrespectful.

"Look you!" One of Vegeta's soldiers stepped forward. "When King Vegeta asks a question, you'd better give him a straight answer!"

"Who's gonna make me?" the creature replied. The two began to check each other out, gauging the competition.

"That will be ENOUGH!" Vegeta growled harshly. "I do not need you to defend me soldier. All I want to know is where I can find this man." He held up a print out from Tertank's database.

The Lrixion began to look suspicious. "If yer meanin' to hurt him I…" He was cut off by Vegeta.

"Actually, it's quite the opposite. I would not hurt my own father in law."

After a round of drinks to wet parched throats, the crew was on the move again. They were heading towards the colony's largest city, a mere hamlet compared to Vegetasei standards. It was here that the Lrixion, named Hophlam, had directed them. Vegeta clicked on his scouter, setting it to pick up any life forms. In a few minutes, the device started beeping incessantly, signaling that they were very close to a large population.

People cowered in fear as the crew of five touched down in the middle of a cracked street. A few stood their ground, and it was one of these that Vegeta called over. The middle aged blond woman flounced towards him, with a giggle, as if nothing was wrong. All 5 Saiyan warriors cringed as she spoke, her high-pitched voice cutting through their sensitive ears.

"Well hello dear? How can I help you?" She smiled, looping her arm through Vegeta's. The crew had to cover their mouths in order to muffle their laughter. Some of the other people, seeing that nothing had been destroyed so far, had begun to move closer, surrounding the warriors, who moved into their fighting stances.

"Stand down." Vegeta barked at his men. "We're not here to fight and you idiots damn well know that." He turned back to the woman. "I'm looking for this man. Have you any idea where I can find him?"

To Vegeta's surprise, the blond snatched the paper from his hand. "Ohhh!!! That's my husband!" she bubbled. "But this is really a terrible picture of him! I can give you a better one if you like…" Vegeta heard no more as he shut her voice out of his head. So this was his mother in law? What had he done to deserve this?

"I need to see him." Vegeta stated, cutting off Mrs. Briefs' rambling. She looked slightly confused at first, but then remembered who 'him' was, and began to tug the Saiyan King down the street, still clinging to his arm. The ship's crew followed, trying desperately to contain their mirth.

After walking for about ten minutes, Mrs. Briefs stopped at a decrepit looking structure. She pushed a button on the wall, and a door seemed to appear out of nowhere. She stepped inside and bustled off down a corridor, telling Vegeta and his men to make themselves at home. A few minutes later, she reappeared with a frumpy looking little man in a lab coat.

"Dr. Briefs, I presume?" Vegeta murmured, as the old man removed his thick glasses and wiped them off with the corner of his coat. As he put them back on, his eyes widened in shock, seeing Vegeta for the first time.

"Y…Yes. I am he…Um…How can I help you?" the doctor stuttered. Vegeta smirked. Good, this man was not nearly so irritating as his wife was.

"I am King Vegeta of the Saiyan Empire. I would like it if you were to come back to Vegetasei and work for me." Vegeta stated.

"And why should I leave this place?"

"Simple. Your daughter is alive and thriving on my home planet and I'm sure you'd like to see her again…Daddy." Vegeta smirked.

"D..Da…What?" Dr. Briefs was astonished.

Vegeta turned to his soldiers. "Wait outside." he said simply. He continued after they had all exited the building. "Your daughter, through a rather strange turn of events, has become my mate, and the Queen of my empire. I wish to surprise her with your presence."

"B…Bulma's alive?" Mrs. Briefs' bubbly attitude had dissipated somewhat, and now she was just astonished.

"Yes. She is alive and well, I assure you. She has been somewhat depressed as of late, and spoke to me of missing her parents. I had some research done and one of my officers located you here."

"So you want us to come back with you?"

"Is that not what I said?"

"We'll go!" Mrs. Briefs cried. "I want to see my baby!"

"Pack your things then. I wish to leave this place as soon as possible."

"Come on Bulma!" Corky cried. "If you don't quit squirming you're going to end up looking like Ronald McDonald!" She was busy trying to apply Bulma's makeup.

"I'm sorry! It's just that I'm so excited to have Vegeta back! I just can't wait to see him!"

Corky sighed, and continued with her job. "Oh! The curlers should be done now!" She abandoned the eyeliner pencil for a moment, and began to remove the hot rollers from Bulma's hair. Quickly, she pulled the mass of blue silk up into a pile atop the Queen's head, and secured it with many white bobby pins. For a bit of extra flair, she tucked in a few tiny white blossoms. Quickly, Corky finished with the eyeliner and hurried Bulma into a dress so fast the Queen didn't know what she was wearing.

Hurriedly, the two walked down numerous marble corridors until coming to a door. "Corky," Bulma started. "Where are we going? The ship dock is on the other side of the palace."

Corky only smiled at her friend, and pushed open the huge door. Bulma stepped inside, gasping at what awaited her.
