Vegeta's glare shot over his shoulder as the man for whom the prince had been waiting appeared.  With a nod from the other, they sprung into action, exchanging blows and blasts with the same quick pacing as had become normal, especially these days.  There was no chatter on the side; there was no taunting sprinkled throughout the battle.

They weren't really on bad terms, no.

They had just run out of things to talk about.  The mocking had grown tiresome; the threats, trite.  Everyday life was boring, and left nothing worth conversing about.

Goku leapt back, breathing just as heavily as his counterpart.  They stood still for a few moments, each trying to read the other's eyes.  Vegeta could see through the doors and windows of his rival's orbs, but Goku had no such luck.  The same ice and stone, graying as every day passed, blocked his view.  He was used to not seeing what was on Vegeta's mind, and had become proficient at reading the prince's mood based on subtle changes in body movement.

Today, Vegeta was melancholy, contemplative, laid-back.  It was obvious even as they followed through the routine movements of the sparring match.  The smaller man had let more blows than usual past his guard; he had grown lax and allowed many opportunities for a powerful strike to slip by.  He seemed distracted, his eyes tending to drift to the sky behind Goku as they shot through the air and dodged flurries of ki blasts.  His shoulders slumped ever so slightly much more than they had before.  These tiny things were obvious to Goku.

Vegeta stared with stony confusion at Goku as he seemed to be spending more time staring into his eyes than working through the fight.  Usually, his rival was a focused warrior, but he noticed Goku's eyes moving around to observe things that were not part of the battle.  He narrowed his eyes as Goku seemed to ignore the ki blast lit in his gloved hand and instead observe the arm, up to the shoulder, across to the other shoulder.  Well, he would get Kakarrot for letting his attention drift.  Vegeta threw the blast into the other Saiyajin's face, sending him flying back.

Another stare-down ensued.

Vegeta looked the younger man over.  His stance was more open than usual.  Perhaps he was in a receptive mood.  His face hinted neither smile nor frown.  He felt neutral today, then.  Breakfast and lunch must not have been anything special.  He hadn't been fishing, but he hadn't been forced to do chores.  As always, he smelt strongly of the mountain upon which he lived.  Maybe he had spent the entire day sitting on a tree branch or rock overhang, just watching everything.  Yes, that would make sense.  It would match with his open, candid mood.  Even if it would have been easier to just ask what he had done so far that day, Vegeta took a certain pride in being able to figure it out himself.  Besides, he didn't really want to hear about it.  It was just interesting to know what Kakarrot had been up to.

Goku regarded Vegeta critically, but waited for him to do something - even to say something.  He let his mind open up as he observed the other man; taking in anything he could, inviting Vegeta to show him more.  Vegeta's hand twitched as his fist tightened, and then loosened.  So, he was also indecisive today.  What made his resolve flicker?  And what was his resolve?  Goku smiled, to see how Vegeta would react.

The prince blinked slowly.  Why had Kakarrot…?   Perhaps he had some new trick up his sleeve.  Vegeta considered leaping forward, inviting him to put it to use, but was more interested in seeing if he could get Goku to step out of his patient waiting and attack first.  He smirked back.  He would see that Goku would fall into his trap, even if he had no trap.  But the fool didn't know that.

Goku's smile broadened, this time becoming a real smile, not just a device to test his counterpart.  Vegeta wasn't going to be taken that easily.  Taken?  Into what?  Well, that wasn't important.  He just wanted to see if he could coax Vegeta into revealing something.  Pausing from his close study of the prince momentarily, Goku tried to think of what he could do to confuse Vegeta enough to make him move, or speak.  He sat down, crossing his legs, and then his arms, and glancing up at Vegeta with wide, questioning eyes.

Vegeta glared at the other man, crossing his own arms.  At the realization that the fight, in all its reality-numbing glory, might not pick back up as quickly as he had hoped, he felt his shoulders slump ever so slightly, the smallest hint of sadness shining over his eyes and then disappearing.  He joined the other man on the ground, matching his ante and waiting.  The prince would not let his subject's antics perturb him, at least not outwardly.  Vegeta raised an eyebrow as if to question what was next.

The other Saiyajin marveled at Vegeta's patience.  So, it seemed they were both in the mood to wait today.  Still, he had seen the change in his posture.  Something had disappointed Vegeta, and now Goku had to know what.  What had let that ounce of sadness slip over his features?  But he couldn't just ask what was wrong.  No, this was a game now.  Often as Vegeta accused him of having no pride, Goku knew it was there - because he had to play along, just to prove that he could.  Pondering once more what to do to throw Vegeta off, he turned around, facing his back to the man.

Of course, this would be a perfect opportunity to attack.  But Vegeta knew better than that.  That was what Goku wanted him to do - no, that was what Goku knew he would consider, but then decide against.  He could do it just to counter this - but his pride would not allow him to take the easy way out.

And then it slipped out - a low growl from the base of his throat, before he could stop it.  Kakarrot was toying with him.

Well then, he would toy with Kakarrot.

Vegeta stood up, pacing up to the other man so that he was standing just behind Goku.  He stood there and waited.

Goku considered this move - interesting, but no help at all.  He tilted his head back, glancing up at Vegeta, who stared harshly back at him.  He leaned back to lie in the grass.  Now, his shoulders were planted square between Vegeta's feet, his head just behind the prince, the rest of his body in front of him.  From here, he could see Vegeta's tail weaving around anxiously.  As if the prince knew that Goku had noticed this, the tail immediately stopped, now swaying nonchalantly and smoothly.  The larger man continued to stare up, and heard some voice echoing words about a nice view.  He chortled and waited.

Now Vegeta was no longer able to glare at the other man.  They were positioned rather awkwardly…how had he worked his way into this?  He longed for the battle to return, to distract him once more.  He let his tail fall limply, and it grazed his rival's chin.  Suddenly smirking at this, Vegeta swept his tail around a bit more, brushing it around Goku's jaw, up his cheeks, around his eyes and nose and ears.  He silently gloated in the power he now held over the other man, eliciting giggles from him.

Of course, Kakarrot could stop giggling if he really wanted to.  Vegeta realized that the power he held was not as great as he would have liked to think, and paused, wondering what Goku's response would be, how he would prove to Vegeta that he was still determined to get him to do…whatever he wanted him to do.  There was no longer any waiting for a first move, as the twisted strategy game was already underway.

Unable to resist laughing at the tickling sensation, Goku let himself giggle as he thought of what he ought to do next.  Maybe Vegeta was matching each of his moves with a move of his own, now, but he really needed something more to happen.  Was he still merely testing for Vegeta's reactions, to discover what he could, or was he waiting for more?  Well, he would get Vegeta back.  He reached around Vegeta's legs and gently let his short fingernails trace down the prince's thighs, around his knees, his calves and shins.  Goku grinned with satisfaction as he heard Vegeta's toes curl in his boots.  He let his fingers creep up and down Vegeta's legs, observing the shaking that it induced.  It seemed almost as if the man would…

How did Kakarrot do that?  As the other Saiyajin's fingers traced over a sensitive spot near his knee, he was finally forced to buckle.  He collapsed backward, his feet still by Goku's sides.  Vegeta blushed as Goku's mane tickled his inner thigh through his spandex training pants.

The intensity of Goku's grin deepened as he looked back to see the blush on Vegeta's face.  However, the grin soon faded back to the receptive smile.  It was as if Goku was inviting Vegeta to go ahead and make the next move.

Vegeta, however, found moving a very difficult thing to do.  Goku's arms sat, relaxed, atop his legs.  And with the younger man's head between them…well…  He did the best thing he could to save his pride in that situation, and unleashed the most poisonous glare he could.

Goku's eyes saddened.  Was their game over?  But nothing had come of it.  It couldn't end yet.  He had to find out why Vegeta was acting the way he was today; he had to try to figure out anything he could about him; he had to make something happen; and he had to do it all without speaking a word.  Today, for this game, those were the rules.

The prince growled softly, displeased not only with the situation, but also, now, with Goku's apparent gloom.  He couldn't place why the latter upset him, but it did nonetheless.  Well, he would have to try to shock Goku.  That would be the best way to win, now.  They were, quite clearly, not about to resume the fight.  He would have to draw the enjoyment he could out of today without the release from the everyday annoyances and deep, itching demons that the fight usually provided.  Yes, shock.

Carefully, Goku watched the nuances in emotion that passed over Vegeta's eyes.  He must have been in deep thought, to forget to mask the feelings as much as usual.  Disapproval, confusion, decision, disappointment, resolve, finality.  What was he planning?

Vegeta leaned forward, hovering over the man below him.  Giving him one more scrutinizing gaze, seeing the curious waiting in his rival's wide orbs, the prince decisively tipped his head down, covering Goku's lips with his own.  At meeting an agape mouth, Vegeta let his tongue slip between the other Saiyajin's jaws, tracing along his lower teeth, behind his lip, beneath his tongue.  He covered Goku's lower lip with his upper, pressing down on it gently with his teeth.  Vegeta pulled back, but did not sit up, lingering in wait for Goku's response.  His heart pounded fiercely.  Of course Kakarrot wouldn't panic…but…thank goodness he was in a receptive mood today.  Suddenly, it was not the victory in this twisted battle that was important, but Goku's reaction to this one, singular action.

Goku's eyes widened quickly, and he found himself unable to properly return the affection as Vegeta's mouth sunk into his own.  When the prince pulled away, Goku smiled.  Finally.  He had won.

At the positive reaction, Vegeta smirked back.  Finally.

The two stood up.  Goku watched Vegeta carefully, waiting to see if he would be provided with an explanation of what this all meant, or if this was just another thing that happened and was ignored forever more.

Vegeta stared at his counterpart expectantly, waiting for any other positive signs, or perhaps for Goku to make a move of his own.  But he simply stood with a gaze held on Vegeta.  The weight was on him.  Vegeta stepped forward.

Goku continued observing the prince, who took a few more steps toward him.  Finally, inches away from Goku, Vegeta took the other man's hand, and then raised an eyebrow inquiringly.  Goku smiled and inclined his head in an affirmative nod.  They leaned closer to one another, sinking into another kiss.

Perhaps they would no longer be out of things to talk about.
