Part One
Kagetsuya puffed his breath to move his bangs out of his eyes. The grill was hot. The diner was hot. The weather was hot. And he was miserable.
Wiping his forehead with his sleeve, he reminded himself as to why he endured each day. All it took was a glance upwards. Hanging on the wall, over the waffle griddle in a simple metal frame was a picture of his one reason to live and breathe. His dark angel deserved a life much better than they have had. The only way to do that, now that they were no longer in Eden, was for Chihaya to get an education. With a degree, Chihaya would be able to find work that paid more than minimum wage. Out of love and a desire for better things for his partner, Kagetsuya endured as a cook in a diner, so his angel could attend school.
He wasn't aware that he was staring at Chihaya's picture until he heard a soft chuckle. He turned to see Natalie, the senior waitress, leaning against the counter watching him.
"You know, you get the cutest expression when you are thinking about him. It's this far away look. Full of adoration."
"No I don't," he protested weakly, turning back to the grill.
She nodded thoughtfully, looking off in the distance. "Worshipful. And sometimes, you almost slip up and smile."
He glared at her as he scooped the omelet off the grill, placing it on a plate next to the hash browns.
"I said 'almost'." She plucked the toast out of the toaster, cutting the slices in half.
"Order up," he growled, thrusting the omelet at her. He could feel the temperature rising in his face, and it wasn't from the heat of the grill.
She stopped in the middle of prepping the meal, lightly placing her hand on his arm. "It's okay to love someone that deeply. He's a good young man. And it's obvious that he loves you very much. I think the world would be a better place if we all felt that kind of love."
Kagetsuya's face softened. "Leonard doesn't think so. He has already asked me to take his picture down," his voice tightening.
"Well, what did you say?"
"I gave him directions for the most direct route to Hell."
Natalie laughed. "Only you can talk to him that way." Picking up the armload of plates, she bumped him in the butt with her hip on her way by. "Good for you. Leonard is an ass." And she moved smoothly out to deliver breakfast.

Currently it was between the breakfast and lunch rush. Only a handful of customers were in the diner at the moment, mostly regulars. The other waitresses had gone across the street to the Dollar Store, leaving just him and Natalie to look after the diner. He seized the opportunity to take a break. Wiping his hands on his apron, Kagetsuya stepped out from behind the grill and poured himself a cup of coffee.
"Here," Natalie took his coffee and pushed him out from behind the counter, to a booth. "You sit down, it was a busy morning. There was a line out the door, waiting to get in." Placing his mug down, she reached in her apron, producing two sets of silverware, setting one down in front of him and the other opposite of him. She returned shortly with a bagel and some of his special blend cream cheese.
Answering his questioning look, she smiled. "I saw what time you clocked in this morning. I doubt very much you had the opportunity to eat yet."
He smiled up at her appreciatively. "Thanks, Nat." Smearing some of the cheese onto the bagel half, he tore it into pieces as he ate in silence. Sipping quietly on his coffee, he gazed out the window watching distractedly as the Earthians went about their daily lives. The hustle and bustle outside the window was just a blur to him as the world jogged, walked, sauntered, strolled and hurried by. Leaving him alone with just his thoughts.
Working in an upscale restaurant would have been more suited to his tastes. But unfortunately, to even be considered a line cook, he needed culinary school credentials, which Kagetsuya didn't have. As a result he was forced to waste his talent working in a greasy spoon, making him cranky to deal with.
Not that Leonard, the owner, complained any. In fact, Kagetsuya's insistence on higher food standards brought in the customers in droves, once word got around. Making money hand over fist, Leonard was willing to do what ever it took to keep his cook happy. Thus Kagetsuya was easily the highest paid grill cook in the city.
Employment did have its downside. Now that he was working, he didn't have as much time to spend with Chihaya as he would have liked. So Kagetsuya capitalized on the Leonard's greed. He would only work the breakfast/lunch shift, getting off around between 2 and 3 pm each afternoon, depending on the crowds. He had weekends off. A tip jar was established just for him. And Leonard even backed off about the picture.
So, all in all, he couldn't really complain. Kagetsuya had it pretty good, considering. He was well paid, could dictate his time off. But damn, sometimes the days were long and grueling. And like today, hot. By the end of it, he knew his feet would hurt like no ones business. But he would bear it, all for his Chihaya.
Kagetsuya was drawn out of his introspection as a bus pulled into the bus stop just outside of the diner, disgorging its passengers and consuming more. He watched as a slim, dark haired young man stepped from the bus and walked straight towards the diner. Wearing khaki shorts, a dark blue tank top and high top Converse tennis shoes, the youth stopped in front of the window. A small smile swept across his lips as he commanded Kagetsuya's attention.
Standing transfixed, violet eyes met blue-green. The energy exchanged in that one look was palatable. Gazing at each other for long moments, the small form hitched his book bag up higher on his shoulder and slowly moved towards the door to enter the diner.
"Hi, Kagetsuya…" his eyes twinkling as he walked up to Kagetsuya's side of the booth.
The blonde reached up and stroked a soft cheek affectionately. "Hello, angel."
Placing a quick lick and kiss to the strong hand, Chihaya broke the loving touch and glided smoothly into the booth seat opposite of Kagetsuya. Immediately, he slumped down in the bench, tangling his legs comfortably with the tall blonde's.
Kagetsuya drank in the presence of his dark angel as Natalie brought out a slice of coconut meringue pie and a soda. "Well?" she asked as she placed the plate and glass on the table in front of Chihaya. Noting confusion on his face, "Your test. How did you do on your test?" She rolled her eyes dramatically in mock exasperation.
"Oh. Right," he giggled. Shrugging, "I think I did okay," he answered modestly.
"Just…okay? Lord knows you studied enough for that test!" A raised eyebrow was followed by arms crossing over her chest.
"Well, maybe better than okay." He smiled, a blush creeping up his neck and coloring his face. "How about 96%?"
"Good boy." She nodded once and walked briskly to the counter to wait on a new customer.
Chihaya straightened up in his seat. Unwrapping the napkin from off the silverware, he plucked the fork out and scooped up a piece of pie onto it. Raising it up to his lips, he stopped long enough to ask Kagetsuya, "When do you get off?"
Kagetsuya quickly seized Chihaya's wrist. Pulling the fork close to his mouth, "As soon as I get home, I hope," he murmured huskily. Opening his mouth seductively, he closed his eyes as he snaked his tongue out, licking at the meringue before slowly closing his mouth over the fork. He pressed his lips hard to the utensil, drawing it out slowly. After swallowing, he opened his eyes as he darted his tongue out again, licking his lips to capture any lingering cream.
Kagetsuya read Chihaya's face like an open book. He smiled when he saw the violet eyes sparkle as love, passion, lust, desire, adoration, all passed swiftly across his dark angel's features.
Chihaya felt a slow burn making its way across his cheeks. The seductive display caused an involuntary tightening in his lap. Smiling shyly, he looked back down at his pie. Quickly shoving in a bite, he changed the subject. "English lit is cancelled today, so I will be done for the day right after my biology class. Can I come by here and wait for you?"
"Chihaya…"
"I don't want to be at home alone. I'll be quiet and sit in the corner not bothering anyone. Please?" Chihaya's eyes pleaded.
"Well, it *will* be at the tail end of the lunch rush." Kagetsuya leveled his gaze at Chihaya. "But only if you promise to study and not get distracted into helping the waitresses. Your education is important, Chihaya."
Chihaya nodded quickly a smile brightening his features. "Okay. I promise."
They talked a while longer about things inconsequential. Looking at his watch, Chihaya sucked down the last of his soda and started gathering up his backpack. "I guess I better get back. US History. And the professor doesn't like it if we walk in late." He slipped gracefully out of the booth.
Kagetsuya slid out as well, and stood in front of the dark haired boy. "I'll be right back, Nat," he said, his eyes never leaving Chihaya's. Placing his hand possessively on the back of the smaller boy's neck, Kagetsuya walked him out to the bus stop.
As the bus pulled into sight further up the street, Kagetsuya tilted Chihaya's face up. Gently placing a kiss on his lips, he smiled tenderly. "Have a good class. See you at 1:00." He waited until Chihaya boarded the bus and then went back inside.

Chihaya went to an empty seat and flopped into it. It never ceased to amaze him how well Kagetsuya knew his schedule. No detail of Chihaya's life escaped Kagetsuya unnoticed.
Raising his fingers to his lips, Chihaya reveled in the fact they still tingled from the kiss. In fact, his whole body hummed anytime he was near Kagetsuya. The slightest touch from him set every nerve on fire. Never had he felt so loved, wanted, desired, than when he was with his lover.
Staring out the window, Chihaya smiled. He knew that Kagetsuya was unhappy working at the diner. He counted himself so lucky that Kagetsuya was willing to put his dreams on hold, while Chihaya went to school. Every day, Chihaya gave thanks that tall angel was in his life, grateful that the blonde loved him so much to do this for him. And he vowed to make the sacrifice count.
