Prologue
“What the hell are we doing?” Xak murmured into my tangled hair. In a snap
decision, we both threw our virginity out the window. Now we sat, curled up into each
other, holding on for dear life. I pressed myself closer to his chest. His tanned, too-warm
skin was smooth and soft now and it was comforting.
I observed the pleasing contrast of my ivory skin against his. His muscled arms
tightened protectively around me. For this moment, both of us were helplessly vulnerable.
Danger was only hours away and we knew this might be our last chance. I was going to
fight, whether he wanted me to or not.
I shivered as a gust of cold air seeped beneath the old wooden door. Xak's soft,
burning lips pressed against my temple. One arm unwrapped from my body as he reached
over for a thick wool blanket hanging over the fraying loveseat behind us. He pulled me
onto his lap and draped the blanket over us. I knew his stress was growing at an alarming
rate with every second that passed, but not once had he reached for his pack of cigarettes.
“Everything will be fine. Both of us are going to be fine.” he whispered soothingly. I
didn't need to be soothed, but I kept quiet. He was speaking more to himself than me. He
took deep, even breaths and I felt his jaw muscles tighten. I took his face in my hands and
forced him to look at me. His breath hitched when he saw the warm smile on my face. I
closed the gap between our lips. His hand shot up to the back of my head and kissed me
harder, in a kind of desperation. “Etruria…Ru…Ru…” he spoke between kisses,
“We'll…be just…fine…right?”
I had never seen him like this. This must be something serious to cause him to act
this way. Xak took my hand and held it tightly. I rested my head on his shoulder once more
and pressed my lips to the curve of his neck. “Yes,” I said, “yes we will.”
