Harassment

"Ru," Xak said sharply, grabbing my shoulder and whirling me around, "Get. Him.

The. Fuck. Away. From. Me." He growled through his teeth.

"Who?" I asked innocently. I was being too innocent and Xak knew it.

"You know exactly who."

"No, I don't." I was being very cruel… but it was too much fun.

"Hellooo, Xak!" Zeno called, suddenly appearing over Xak's shoulders. He slid his

tongue up Xak's neck and to the base of his ear. Xak flinched and threw Zeno over his

shoulder, jamming his elbow into Zeno's jaw along the way. Zeno landed next to me on

both his legs, like a cat it seemed. He ignored his jaw, which wasn't even forming a bruise.

Instead of a sad wince like I expected, Zeno was smirking as his eyes landed on me.

"Etruria." Zeno purred, taking me by the waist. He wrapped his fingers into my belt

loops and pulled me around to face Xak again. "Werewolf or not, Xak, your blood is

heavenly too."

"That's disgusting." Xak muttered.

We were in a cluster of trees in the field next to the school during lunch. Sadie

lounged on a low, thick branch, watching all the banter.

On Saturday morning, Xak had dropped my car and me off at Sadie's house at ten. I

had walked to her window and tapped on the glass a few times before she opened it to let

me climb in.

"I figured your parents were asleep so I didn't use the door." I explained. Sadie

nodded sleepily, squinting in the light. Hangover, of course. I wore sunglasses and even then

my head still pounded.

"Hurry and come in. I think your parents called a couple hours ago. Just tell them

you stayed the night here… Then tell me where you really were." Sadie said, shutting the

window and drawing the curtains.

I had done as she said.

"Hello?" My mom's voice asked.

"Hi, mom." I replied sleepily, "Sadie's dad woke us up saying you'd called earlier."

"I did. I figured you were over there. Your note said you'd be back later but I guess it

makes sense because Sadie's is a couple of blocks down." Mom rambled.

"Yeah, once we realized that the party was still going at two, we left. We were

exhausted. I'll see you around noon, okay?"

"Okay. Say hi to Sadie for me. Bye."

"All right. Bye."

I hung up the phone and looked up at Sadie. She was staring at me expectantly.

"Tell me."

I sighed and chose my words carefully. "We just… hung out. He lent me some

clothes to wear and… Uhm… We slept in his bed."

Sadie had a smirk on her face and I retaliated by giving her a look that clearly said

'nothing special happened.'

A few minutes ago, however, Xak brought Sadie and I out here while Zeno followed

behind. Zeno had been harassing Xak all day. Xak told Sadie about being a werewolf after I

begged him to. I wouldn't have been able to keep it from Sadie. He also had to reveal Zeno

for what he was.

"Ru all ready know." Xak had reasoned.

"Aww… Ruin all the fun." Zeno had whined while slipping his hands into Xak's

back pockets.

Xak had growled and leaped away to a safe distance.

Now, I walked up to Sadie and climbed up. There was enough room for two people

to sit while she was stretched out on it.

"So, what do you think?" I asked.

"It makes sense. They seemed different from everyone else, don't you think? And

that night it was Xak all along, huh? But what about the wound he had?"

Xak perked up and twisted around to face Sadie. He held up his left forearm, the

skin smooth and unmarked.

"Completely healed." I said.

"Amazing… What about Zeno? What happens when he steps into sunlight?" Sadie

asked. In a split second, Zeno was perched on the branch above us, sheltered by the curtain

of leaves as the sun peaked through the clouds.

"Reeeally bad sunburn. I can stand in the sunlight, but I end up looking like a

tomato. Vampires don't normally go out in the sunlight because the sunburns we get look

too unnatural. Duh."

"No bursting into flame or turning into dust?" Sadie whined a little.

"Nope."

"Damn."

"Hardly any of your myths are true."

"What about garlic?"

"Well, it irritates us and certainly drives us away for a while. Sensitive sense of

smell—"

"—Werewolves too." Xak interjected, climbing up too.

"So garlic, onions, vinegar… anything with a strong, acrid odor will ward us, but not

because of magic or weakness." Zeno hung upside-down from his branch and rubbed Xak's

shoulders. Xak twitched away and growled menacingly. I blinked and found Zeno leaping

down with his hands locked around Xak's wrists.

"Deep down, you know you find some pleasure in this." Zeno said, his tongue

skimming Xak's lips.

Xak pushed Zeno off with his feet and wiped his mouth.

"Makes me sick, not excited." Xak said, climbing up the tree and curling up against

me.

Zeno gazed up and muttered, "I can't choose between the two of them."

"Aw, Zeno. I know it's hard being a fourth wheel." Sadie said.

"Sure is. Of course the two people I'm crazy about hook up."

Xak said, "One: I'm not a person. Two: We… We haven't… We're not…"

"What? Commitment issues? There's not point in being intimate with each other if

you aren't planning to get together." Sadie interjected.

"FINE! …" Xak was dead silent for a second. Turning his sharp eyes to me, he

grumbled, "You're my girlfriend now."

"Fine with me." I replied, even though it was a demand rather than a question. Xak

roughly grabbed my hand. Even though he acted angry about the situation, I saw him look

down and relax, staring peacefully at our interlaced fingers.

"Aw! You're so cute!" Sadie crooned, then added, "Well, you know, for a human and

a werewolf."

"The big, bad wolf wasn't so bad after all." I said, stroking Xak's palm.

"Oh, Little Red, the wolf is still bad, but his heart is good." Xak mumbled, his heavy

lids drooping over his serene eyes.
