“So Dan tell me what happened?”
No matter how many things he saw in this life there was still the occasional incident that made him wonder if there was any humanity left in the world.
“I cheated on him.”
Dee carefully schooled his features as not to give away his feelings on the subject. Yes, he'd been a player in his day - he freely admitted it. Both the women and the men knew it and usually went into the fling with eyes wide open. He'd only been moderately serious about two people before Ryo and even then he'd been loyal.
And as for his cheating on Ryo --?
No fucking way. Never. Not a snowballs fucking chance in hell.
“He found out,” it was a statement of fact. Dee stood over the young man with his pen poised over the pad and wished like all hell that Ryo was here.
Dan raised his head and gazed with red-rimmed eyes, his face mottled from his expression of grief. There was a look of despair about his whole person. He was only a few years younger than Dee but his light coloring reminded Dee of Ryo. The only difference was the young man's eyes were baby blue.
“I never dreamed--,”
Of course you didn't. The moment the thought occurred Dee regretted it but not by much. He knew he should be more sympathetic but considering what his infidelity had caused--,
“Please believe me - I did love him but--,”
“But?”
“We'd been having problems lately. Matt - he was --,” Dee saw him swallow hugely and press his fingers to his lips. “I can't believe they're both dead.”
Again Dee kept his face impassive. “I'm sorry,” and he meant it, “But I have to ask you this now.”
Dan shook his head. “Matt was an old boyfriend,” he managed a watery smile. “My first actually. Jon and I had a fight that evening and I walked out. Met Matt at a club and--,”
He didn't need to tell Dee the rest.
“I thought - we thought we were being careful,” Dan continued. We tried to convince ourselves we would stop soon. That it was just a fling.”
Dan pressed the heels of his hands to his eyes, “And now--,”
Jon had left a note. It was brief but there was no denying its meaning. Now two men were dead.
Suddenly Dee needed to be away from there. Away from the smell of blood and the feeling of anger and sorrow.
He needed to be with Ryo.
“Detective?”
Dee turned back to the young man.
“Are you married?”
“Yes,” Dee said.
Dan smiled slightly. “What's his name?”
It didn't surprise him that Dan thought he was gay. “Randy,” for some reason, Dee didn't want Dan to know Ryo's intimate nickname although he couldn't tell himself why.
“You love him don't you? I can see it in your eyes.”
“Yes I do, very much,” And I would never dream of cheating on him.
“And you'd never cheat on him. I can see that too.
Dan's insight made Dee uncomfortable. “Is there anything else you can tell me?”
“No,” Dan said. “Except - go home and love him.”
Dee nodded once in a curt motion. It was exactly what he planned to do.
“Dee?”
Dee turned as the forensics officer approached and handed him a carefully prepared evidence bag. Dee turned his back to Dan so he wouldn't have to see it even though the young man was quite aware of what it was. The officer was speaking softly. She wasn't telling him anything that he hadn't already deduced.
Dee sighed as he read the note penned in a neat script as though the person who had written it wanted to be certain the recipient understood. To Dee and everyone else there was no denying its meaning:
You betrayed me.
So live with it.
