Chapter 1. I Just Died In Your Arms Tonight
(Rock Cutting Crew)
Dee opened his emerald green eyes and blinked lazily into the sun's sleep-intruding rays. He put a hand over his eyes to shield them from the harsh daylight streaming through the windows and shifted in the bed, running a hand through his ebony tresses. At the slight shifting of movement next to him, he glanced down to see his partner still encapsulated by the sandman's spell. Dee studied the beautiful man beside him, still disbelievingly acknowledging that Ryo was indeed his forever. As the gentle rise and fall of Ryo's pale chest further exemplified his state of innocence, Dee reflected on how happy he truly was having Ryo for a lover, and better yet, a soulmate. It was the man's looks that had initially attracted him, yes, but there was something more than that. The man's kind heart, gentle and oftentimes shy demeanor, unassuming air of helpfulness for the less fortunate, and winning smile all helped to capture Dee's heart and refused to let go.
As Dee lay staring at his sleeping partner, mesmerized, Ryo slowly opened his dark midnight depths and his face broke into a broad smile at seeing Dee gazing down at him. "Good morning Dee," Ryo said sleepily. "Did you sleep well?" he asked as he shifted closer to Dee's warm body.
"Mm hmm; did you?" Dee answered, absentmindedly running his fingers through Ryo's hair in loving caresses and leaning down to steal a quick kiss from the lips he never tired of kissing.
"I always sleep well when I'm next to you," Ryo replied, basking in the gentle touches that conveyed so much love to him. "But unfortunately we have to get up for work in a few minutes anyway, so it's a good thing we woke up early."
"Awww Ryo, can't we have a quickie before we go?" Dee inquired hopefully. "Last night was just so amazing that I think I might have been dreaming."
"Well, it was no dream, Dee," Ryo said, "I remember it very well. It's a memory that will stay etched in my heart forever."
"Can you refresh my memory then?" Dee asked in a voice dripping with seduction as he leaned closer to Ryo, a slight smile playing over the corners of his mouth.
A flicker of indecision crossed Ryo's handsome features, but always the responsible one, he chose duty over pleasure. "I'm sorry Dee, but we really have to get to work. We'll be late if we don't get moving," he said, reluctantly pulling back the covers and walking into the bathroom to get a shower.
"Well, it was worth a shot," Deemurmured in disappointment as he watched Ryo's gloriously toned body walk into the bathroom. He put a robe on and went out to the kitchen to boil hot water for coffee for himself and tea for Ryo.
He noticed Bikky sitting at the table, cramming toast into his mouth and downing it with a swift gulp of orange juice. "Morning Bikky," Dee said a bit distractedly.
"Morning perv," Bikky returned, noticing Dee's exhausted stance as he waited for the caffeine to take effect on his system. "Hey, I thought you guys said you were going to bed early last night, so why are you so tired?" he asked suspiciously.
"That's none of your business. We just didn't get much sleep, that's all - it happens," Dee replied.
"Yeah well I think you guys were banging each other all night long," Bikky proclaimed, taking the remaining piece of toast with him as he dodged Dee's attempt to hit him with a pillow.
"Why you little - " Dee said as he continued to chase Bikky around the kitchen and into the living room.
"What - you're not denying it. Why don't you just get out and leave Ryo alone? I'm sure he'd sleep a lot better without you pawing at him all the time," Bikky continued to harass Dee and dodge Dee's lunges until he was back at the entrance to the kitchen, where he came face-to-face with…
"Ryo!" he exclaimed in surprise. Ryo stood there with his hands on his hips and slightly damp hair, looking equally as worn-out as Dee, but with a threatening glare directed at his young charge.
"Bikky, how many times do I have to tell you not to pick on Dee?" he said in his no-nonsense voice. "Please, for once I would just like to wake up and have no fighting in my kitchen."
"Aww, you're no fun! Besides, the perv doesn't even live here and I do, so someone's gotta put him in his place. I know YOU'LL never tell him to get out, so I will," Bikky said indignantly.
"Bikky, whoever I have over at my apartment is my prerogative, and DeeIS a guest here," Ryo said, frustrated by the seemingly never-ending battle between the two people who meant the most to him in the world.
With a furious sigh, Bikky grabbed his bookbag off of the counter and slammed the door as he ran out of the apartment, muttering, "I'm only trying to look out for you, Ryo. I don't want to see you get hurt by that player."
"Bikky - wait!" Ryo yelled after him, hanging his head in defeat as he heard Bikky's angry footsteps resonate with a vengeance down the hall before fading away.
"Hey, are you okay?" Dee asked with concern, coming up behind Ryo and wrapping his arms around Ryo's slim waist.
"Not really," Ryo said resignedly as he leaned back against Dee's frame for support. "It's just that Bikky knows how hard it is for me to get used to being comfortable with the idea of our relationship, and if he can't even accept us, how can society? What can I do to convince him that you're an important part of my life too?" Ryo turned around to face Dee with an almost pleading look in his beautiful eyes.
Dee placed his hands on Ryo's waist and drew him in close. Looking deep into his eyes, Dee said, "Awww Ryo, I'm sure the kid is just worried about you. He doesn't mean anything by it. He loves you very much and wouldn't want to see anything happen to you, as do I," Dee said reassuringly.
"Maybe you're right and I'm just overreacting," Ryo admitted. "I just get so worked up about things sometimes and I tend to stress out. It's just that I was thinking of asking you to move in with me and I really want you and Bikky to get along…"
Ryo trailed off and clapped his hands over his mouth at Dee's look of surprise. Emerald eyes widened in shock and then sparkled in delight. "You were going to ask me to move in with you? Do you really mean it, Ryo?" Dee asked hopefully.
A slight stain of pink spread across Ryo's cheeks as he met Dee's intense stare that seemed to look into the depths of his very soul. "Yes Dee, that is if you wanted to," his blush deepened as he fumbled for words. "I mean I wasn't sure of how I was going to ask you, but I guess I just let it slip. I mean, we have been a couple for only a few months and all…" When Dee didn't say anything, he looked down in embarrassment; maybe it was too soon to ask Dee after all.
Dee brought one hand under Ryo's chin and tilted his head up so that he could look Dee in the eyes. "Ryo, look at me," Dee commanded. Dark eyes hesitantly looked up under veiled lashes as Ryo trembled slightly in anticipation. "I would like nothing more than to move in with you and make you a permanent part of my life," Dee said earnestly. "I love you so much and I would give my life for you, Ryo."
Ryo's midnight eyes began to brim with tears of joy at seeing the man he loved with all his heart ready to accept such a commitment. It was true that before he met Dee, Dee was a notorious player, unwilling to become attached to anyone romantically beyond a pretty face leading to a night of fun. However, meeting Ryo had changed all that, and Dee had changed for the better, still amazed at how much the man standing before him could affect his lifestyle so drastically.
Dee sealed his promise with a deep kiss, claiming and ravishing Ryo's mouth with a passionate fire. Ryo melted into Dee's embrace, parting his lips and allowing Dee's tongue entrance, closing his eyes in a blissful sigh. Dee continued to consume Ryo's luscious mouth, sucking gently on his bottom lip while both men took in some much-needed air. Suddenly, Ryo's eyes flew open and he pulled away abruptly. "Oh God Dee - we are so late!" he exclaimed, glancing at the clock behind Dee. However, he was not upset at his partner.
"Sorry, I must have lost track of the time," Dee said sincerely. "Are you sure you don't want to just call in sick? We could play doctor and you could be the naughty nurse," he said enticingly, raising an eyebrow. Seeing the disapproving look on Ryo's face that also betrayed a slightly pink hue, he reluctantly relented any further pursuit. "Well, we'd better get a move on or else the Chief will have our asses," he said as he grabbed Ryo's jacket and tossed it to him before slinging his own coat over his shoulder. Ryo only smiled at Dee's back in response and shook his head as he followed his insatiable partner out the door and locked the apartment.
"Man, I hate city driving," Deecomplained, honking his horn loudly at a car that just ran a red light. "No one drives safe anymore," he remarked as he turned up the heater against the chill fall air and absentmindedly flicked the ashes from his cigarette out the window before crushing it out in the car's ashtray.
"Well, there's only so much you can do," Ryo said practically. "Unfortunately not everyone who commits a traffic violation is able to be reprimanded. There's just not enough manpower or time."
"Yeah, I guess you're right," Deesaid, glancing over at his shy partner, who was looking out the window at the changing leaves. God, the man was just so sexy. As Dee eyed up Ryo's perfect body and began to have naughty thoughts about his oblivious partner, Ryo turned to meet Dee's intense stare.
"Green light, Dee," Ryo said, pointing ahead and forcing Deeto focus on the road in front of him as he accelerated through the light.
Unfortunately, the driver of a big truck in the intersection to the right of their car, although a good distance away, did not heed the red light and instead of stopping, proceeded through the light at almost breakneck speed. Ryo turned to his right in terror, gripping the back of the seat desperately with white knuckles as the truck barreled towards them, screaming, "DEE!" in a panic-stricken voice. Dee glanced over in horror as he saw the truck rapidly approaching - heading straight for Ryo. He saw that the collision was inevitable, but he was determined not to let Ryo get hit. With lightning-fast reflexes, he slammed on his brakes and pulled the emergency brake, causing the car to swerve around and position itself so that he was in the direct line of collision, while Ryo was opposite the path of imminent destruction. In less than a heartbeat, the truck had smashed into the driver's side of the car with a sickening crunch and threw Dee towards the windshield with such force that it caused him to hit his head off of the steering wheel and violently get pulled back due to the restraint of his seatbelt. Ryo was tossed aside against the passenger door and fell back heavily against the seat, his breathing coming in ragged pants as he rubbed his shoulder and winced.
"Are you okay, Dee?" Ryo called worriedly to his raven-haired partner. Not hearing an answer, he unbuckled his seatbelt and leaned across the seat to put a hand on Dee's shoulder. Dee's body felt cold to the touch, and his gorgeous emerald eyes were closed, despite Ryo's repeated attempts to rouse him from his position. "Oh no, you've gotta be okay Dee," Ryo whispered. His voice rose in panic as he noticed a huge gash across Dee's forehead and blood oozing out of a gaping cut on his cheek from where the glass from the windshield had shattered. "Dee- speak to me," he commanded, but he was met with only silence. He picked up Dee's wrist and felt his pulse, which was erratic and weak. Putting his cheek to Dee's lips, he could feel his partner's shallow breathing, which subsided after a few feeble attempts to return to normal. "NOOOO!" Ryo cried in desperation as he broke down and sobbed uncontrollably into Dee's chest, his hands clutching onto the man's shoulders as if he too would give up the fight for life if his partner succumbed to death's untimely invitation. "Don't give up Dee - don't die on me!" Ryo's whole body convulsed, wracked with grief and helplessness. Tears glistened in the midnight depths that were once so full of happiness as they streamed down his face. "Why - why did you have to save me?" Ryo pleaded as he heard the wailing sirens of an ambulance approaching. "I love you Dee," he whispered as he passed out, surrendering to the pain from his injuries and his broken heart and collapsing onto Dee's chest in one last attempt to reach out to the one he loved.
