“Dad! Dad, we're back!” Bikky and Carol carried the grocery bags into the kitchen.
“Maybe he's out in the garden,” Carol said. “Didn't he say that's where he'd be?”
“With that fog coming in? I doubt it. It did come up quick, didn't it?” Bikky sighed. “Honey, have you noticed how lonely dad seems lately?”
“Yes,” Carol sighed as she started to put the groceries away. “He misses Dee so much.”
“Yeah,” Bikky said quietly.
“We all do,” Carol said knowingly.
Bikky felt his face warm, “Yeah well, okay, I miss the old fart too.”
Carol laughed slightly. “You two were always at each other but you weren't fooling anybody.”
Bikky snorted, “I'm going to go check in his study.”
“Truth hurts, don't it?”
The door to the study was closed and Bikky almost decided not to check it but something, perhaps instinct stopped him from walking away. He knocked slightly, “Dad?” He pushed open the door and stepped inside, “Dad--,”
Ryo was asleep. Not wanting to disturb him Bikky was about to close the door when that same sense of something not being quite right caused him to step into the room.
“Ryo?” Bikky slowly approached. “Oh no…”
Bikky knelt by the chair and laid his hand over Ryo's. It was cool to his touch. Still it seemed as if his father was asleep. His peaceful expression seemed to confirm it.
“Oh dad,” Bikky's voice caught on a sob and tears welled in his eyes. “You missed him too much, didn't you?”
His sobbing brought Carol running into the room. She took her husband in her arms and they cried as they rocked each other back and forth. Finally when they were both spent, Carol retrieved a blanket and carefully draped it over Ryo's form.
“I'll make the calls,” she said, sensing her husband needed a moment.
Bikky wiped his eyes with the heel of his hand. “Dee, you had better take care of him.”
On the floor, the photo albums were arranged in a haphazard pile. Bikky gathered them up and stacked them neatly on the desk. He made a promise to himself to look at them later. He hadn't looked back at those memories for a long time. It was past time he did.
He opened the first album---
“Bikky! Get in here, quick!”
Bikky half stumbled, half ran for the kitchen. Carol had pushed open the glass door and was out on the deck. Bikky followed her, figuring she had seen something from the window. Bikky came to an abrupt halt beside his wife as she stood immobile on the deck.
The fog that had gathered swirled in silver eddies around them. It seemed to encase them in a private world that no one else would see.
Two figures stood at the opposite end of the yard just at the tree line. One dark-haired and olive skinned, the other light colorings and chestnut hair, distinguished only by his wine-dark eyes.
Happy laughter drifted across the space between them. Bikky took Carol's hand and the two continued to watch.
After a time the two men embraced. Then they joined hands themselves and began to walk towards the trees. In moments the fog had surrounded them and they were out of sight.
Bikky blinked back his tears, “They'll be all right now, won't they?”
“Yes,” Carol said. “They're together.”
Author Afterward: Thank you so much for reading and I hope you enjoyed this glimpse into my interpretation of Ryo and Dee's life. But don't think this is all. I have plans to use this as sort of a template for much more. Hope you'll enjoy them!
