Saved?
Chapter 1: Forgetting
Ryo walked into the 27th precinct, taking in the new surroundings that he would be working in. It had been a while since he had been on his own, not that he minded working with his lover, but he liked the idea of doing something by himself. Ryo felt that this transfer would allow him to advance in his professional life and maybe his personal one as well.
Ryo approached the front desk and introduced himself to the young female officer. The officer immediately started hitting on him. Ryo groaned to himself. How he hated women, or men for that matter, who threw themselves at people they don't even know. Ryo politely declined the woman's advances and asked for the location of the chief's office.
After knocking on the door of the chief's office and receiving no answer, Ryo poked his head in the door. He was startled to see the chief yelling at another detective and quickly apologized for entering.
“Sir, sorry for interrupting, but no one answered my knock,” Ryo said. He hung his head, feeling as if he had already messed up at his new job and it was only the first day.
“Detective MacLean, am I correct?” the chief asked.
“Hai, I mean yes sir, I'm Randy MacLean.” Ryo answered, berating himself for letting his native language slip through. “I'm sorry for interrupting.”
“That's okay, I was just yelling at this good-for-nothing detective.” The chief glared at the other man in the room. “Dee, show Randy around will yeah? And don't let him pick up on any of your bad habits.” The chief then said to Ryo, “I'm afraid we don't have a partner for you yet, so if you can tag along with Dee and his partner for the time being, that will be perfect.”
“That is no problem sir. Thank you.” Ryo replied.
“Come on rookie, lets get out of here,” Dee said and lead Ryo out of the room. “So as you already know, the name's Dee, Dee Laytner.”
“Pleased to meet you, Mr. Laytner. I'm Randy MacLean.”
“Just call me Dee. By the way, are you oriental or something? `Cause that wasn't English you spoke in the chief's office.” Dee asked.
“Oh, yeah, half-Japanese actually,” Ryo said hesitantly. He hated people knowing that he was part Japanese. After his difficulties at the academy, he'd rather that no one knew his origins. However, this time it was his fault. “Please don't tell anyone.”
“Um, okay,” Dee replied, confused. What is with this guy? He seems so scared that I'll tell someone. “Don't worry, I won't.”
“Thanks, so who is your partner?” Ryo quickly changed subjects, not wanting to make Dee feel bad about his question. Even though he only met Dee a few minutes ago, he felt an instant attraction to the man and didn't want a possible friendship to fall away.
“Dee-sempai!!!” A young man yelled from across the room and ran into Dee's arms, giving him a kiss that seemed to go on forever. Time seemed to stand still for Ryo, who could just watch this man kiss his temporary partner. Jealousy filled Ryo, for what reason, Ryo did not know. He quickly shook his feelings away; after all he loved Berkley, not Dee. Ryo waited impatiently for Dee to introduce himself to the young man.
After Dee untangled himself from the man, he turned towards Ryo and said “Randy, I'd like you to meet my partner and lover JJ. Adams. JJ. this is Randy MacLean, a new addition to the precinct.”
“Hi Randy!” JJ. said. “Dee, are we still going out for dinner tonight?”
“Sure, Randy do you want to come along? We're checking out a new Japanese restaurant that just opened.” Dee asked.
“Yeah Randy come with us! It will be fun!” JJ. added.
“I'd love to but I already have plans for tonight.” Ryo remembered that Berkley planned to take him out tonight to celebrate.
“Who's the lucky woman? The officer at the front desk?” Dee asked, laughing. “She always asks out the new guys.”
“Actually, it's my boyfriend,” Ryo said, blushing.
“Well he can come along, right Dee?” JJ. asked.
“Sure, just give him a call and tell him we'll meet him at the restaurant at six.” Dee replied. Dee was surprised that Randy was already taken. He had kind of hoped that Randy was single. But wait, what was he thinking? He had JJ. “Come on Randy, me and JJ. will give you the rest of the tour and then you can phone ….?
“Berkley, Berkley Rose.”
“You mean the commissioner of the 26th?” Dee asked feeling surprised. From what he heard, Berkley was a player and rarely stayed with one person at a time. If this was the man Randy was talking about, their relationship would not last long.
“Yeah, we've been together for about two years.” Ryo replied. “So you know him?”
“Yeah I know him.” Dee replied shortly. Two years, Dee thought to himself. Randy must be either incredibly naïve or not care about Rose's reputation. Anyways, it wasn't his concern. “So lets get this tour started. The quicker we finish, the earlier we can eat!”

After Dee and JJ. had shown Ryo around the precinct and introduced him to the other detectives, Ted and Drake, it was already 5 o'clock. Ryo rushed to the nearest phone to call Berkley.
“Hello?”
“Hi Berkley, it's me.” Ryo said.
“Hey Ryo, how's the new job going? I miss you here at work.” Berkley said.
“I miss you too koibito. I was wondering, can we rearrange our date for tonight?” Ryo asked tentatively.
“What do you mean rearrange?” Berkley snapped.
“Koibito, please don't be angry. I'm not cancelling. You see, my partners invited me out to dinner tonight and I didn't want to turn down their offer.”
“So what you're saying is these new partners are more important then me?” Berkley raised his voice in anger.
“No! Of course they're not, how can you think that?” Ryo was close to tears. “Ai shiteru Berkley, itsumo.”
“I'm sorry Ryo, I just wanted to spend some time with my lover tonight. I love you too.” Berkley reassured Ryo.
“Will you come with us? I'd like for you to meet them. Please koibito?”
“Of course Ryo, what time and what place?”
“The new Japanese restaurant by the precinct and at six.”
“I'll be there waiting.”
“See you there. Ai shiteru,” Ryo added quietly.
Dee had been watching Randy as he made his phone call and was astonished at the range of emotions that went on over the matter of five minutes. One moment Randy appeared to be happy, the next he was close to tears. One thing was for sure though, the night would prove to be interesting.
“All good, Randy?” Dee asked with concern.
“Yeah, Berkley will meet us there. You don't mind giving me a ride, do you?” Ryo asked.
“No problem.”
For the rest of the day, Ryo helped Dee and JJ. fill out paperwork from older cases and in no time, it was time to leave.
“So how long have you two been a couple?” Ryo asked JJ. as the three of them climbed into Dee's car.
“Well we were friends in the academy and have been together every since, so about 3 years or so, right Dee? JJ. replied.
“Something like that,” Dee answered, his mind on the road. Silence drifted over the car until they pulled up to the new restaurant. Berkley was standing just outside the door, dressed in a handsome black suit. Ryo hopped out of the car and ran to give his lover a hug and a kiss. Dee and JJ. were a little slower to get of the car.
Ryo introduced his boyfriend to his partners, “Berkley, I'd like you to meet my new partners, JJ. Adams and Dee Laytner.”
“Pleased to meet you, Berkley” JJ. replied and Dee just nodded. The men shook hands and entered the restaurant. The men were seated and began to look at the menus.
“Ryo, babe, look isn't that one of your favourites?” Berkley pointed out an item on the menu while sliding an arm around Ryo's shoulders. Ryo, who had started to snuggle up to Berkley, suddenly jerked out of his arms in anger. He had told Berkley never to tell anyone his real name. Why did he just let it out in front of strangers, well not exactly strangers, but men he did not know very well?
“Ryo? I thought your name was Randy?” JJ. asked in confusion.
“It is. Ryo is just a nickname I gave to him at the academy.” Berkley quickly covered up his mistake. He forgot that Ryo didn't like anyone knowing his Japanese name; he was just so used to calling him by the name that it slipped out by accident.
“Oh, so you met in the academy?” Dee asked, hoping to keep the conversation going. Dee had come to the conclusion that Ryo must be Randy's Japanese name. With the way Randy acted after his confession that he was Japanese, its no wonder he didn't want Berkley to use that name.
“Yeah we did.” Ryo replied, not wanting to get into any more details. His life at the academy, with the exception of Berkley, was something that he did not want to recall. He excused himself and went to the washroom.
“Is he alright?” JJ. asked, worried. “Is it something I said?”
“He's fine,” Berkley replied, “Randy just doesn't like talking about his life at the academy. If you will excuse me?” Berkley left the table to go check on Ryo.
Dee and JJ. sat in silence. “Well they seem okay,” Dee said to break the silence. “Yeah, there's something a bit off though” replied JJ.
In the bathroom…
“Ryo? Are you okay?” Berkley asked in concern.
“Yeah, I'm fine.” Ryo replied.
“You sure? You left pretty quickly.” Berkley continued.
Ryo slammed his hand on the counter. “I'm FINE! I just said that, didn't I?” Ryo turned his head away from his lover.
Berkley wasn't falling for that. Berkley went behind Ryo and wrapped his arms around Ryo's waist. Ryo turned and put his face into Berkley's chest, tears wetting Berkley's shirt.
“I'm sorry,” Ryo choked out.
“Ryo, you have nothing to be sorry for. It's all right.” Berkley said lovingly. “Are you going to be okay? Do you want to go home?”
“I'm okay, just some bad memories. Hold me for a few more minutes, please koibito? Then I'll be okay.”
“Sure Ryo.”
*****
Ryo and Berkley rejoined Dee and J.J. The conversation mainly revolved around work and low salaries and then they departed for the night.
Berkley's and Ryo's ride home was a quiet one. Ryo still seemed upset and leaned against the car door, remaining quiet.
“So, they seem nice.” Berkley commented.
“Huh?” Ryo asked, coming out of a daze.
“Your new partners. They seem nice.”
“Yeah, they're okay. It's nice to be around people that you don't have to hide everything from, you know?”
“What have you told them?” Berkley asked, raising his voice. “You need to be careful Ryo. You're too trustworthy sometimes.”
“Don't worry, I haven't told them anything.” Ryo didn't bring up the fact that he told Dee he was part-Japanese. He didn't want Berkley to know that he had confided that information to his new partner. Berkley could get jealous sometimes and he did not want Dee, or himself, to be the target of that anger. “I just meant that it was nice not to have to worry that they would have a problem with our relationship.”
“Yeah, well we know they definitely won't have a problem with that.” Berkley said with a grin. He had noticed how close the two men were. It was a relief actually. That Ryo wouldn't be hassled for his sexual preferences, and he didn't have to worry about Ryo feeling attraction towards one of his partners. That had happened before, and he did not want to deal with the situation again.
Berkley drove for a few more blocks and then pulled into their apartment building's parking lot. Ryo had fallen asleep and Berkley gently shook him awake.
“Ryo, babe, we're home.”
Ryo sat up and looked around him. “Oh, I guess we are,” Ryo said, stating the obvious. Berkley held the car door open for Ryo. The two lovers entered their apartment building and took off their coats.
“Berkley?”
“Yeah Ryo?”
“Do you….want to have a shower together?” Ryo asked, quickly.
“Is my Ryo getting horny?” Berkley teased Ryo. Berkley was surprised. Normally he initiated sexual advances. He came up behind Ryo and started kissing his neck.
“I want you, to help me forget,” Ryo spit out, starting to get turned on by his lover's touch. “I want you tonight koibito. I'll wait for you in the shower, ne?” Ryo pulled away from Berkley and headed into the bathroom. While in the bathroom, Ryo quickly stripped out of his clothes and slid under the showerhead. Letting the warm water pour down on his head, he tried to wash away his thoughts. At the restaurant, when Berkley mentioned his Japanese name in mistake, memories of the academy came flooding back. He hoped that Berkley, like he did then, could make the memories go away, at least for one night.
Berkley walked into the bathroom, noticing that Ryo was already in the shower. He stepped in behind his lover, admiring his beautiful body. It was something he never tired of. Ryo's body was one that would give any man, hetero or homo, wet dreams. Even when Ryo became boring, and Berkley went elsewhere for fun, he was never sorry for returning.
“Hey babe,” Berkley said seductively, “Will you help me with this little problem?” He turned Ryo around so he could see his full erection, waiting for release.
“No problem koibito,” Ryo replied and got on his knees, taking his lover's sex deep into his mouth. He worked his lover's member, using his tongue and teeth to further the pleasure. The moans that were coming from Berkley were ones of ecstasy, as his hips unconsciously pushed towards Ryo, wanting his entire erection to be covered by Ryo's expert mouth. Berkley had taught Ryo everything he knew and was glad to see that Ryo was learning from his lessons.
“I'm so close Ryo!” Berkley panted.
“Then lets dry off and finish in the bedroom,” Ryo said, smiling as he got up from his knees, knowing that he was leaving Berkley hanging. He stepped out of the shower, draped a towel around his naked body, and turned towards his lover. “Coming?” Ryo asked.
“I sure hope so,” Berkley replied with a grin and followed Ryo into the bedroom.
