“Damn it!” Drake muttered as the elevator descended the twenty floors. “Son of a bitch!”

He couldn't do it. He just couldn't. He wouldn't be a kept man.

Do you think that's how JJ looks at you? His annoyingly practical inner voice challenged.

Drake sighed as the elevator doors opened. He crossed the lobby quickly. The doorman nodded and touched his cap. Drake absently returned the nod. At least the man didn't glare at him anymore.

Once outside Drake melted into the throngs of the city streets. He hadn't been exactly lying. He did need a cigarette. There was an upscale shop down the street that sold the outlandishly expensive imported cigarettes and hand-rolled cigars. Drake was in and out in a matter of moments. He didn't even remember how much he'd paid.

So he walked and filled his lungs with the smoke and each step took him farther from JJ's condo.

He found the haven in the midst of all the chaos. The fountain was in front of an office building. Drake didn't recognize the company name which was a bit disturbing considering he was a native. Drake sat down on the fountain edge and watched the people go by.

There seemed to be an awful lot of couples he noticed and not all of them straight. They snuggled, held hands, stole kisses and Drake envied them just a little.

He thought of JJ alone in his condo, probably blaming himself because Drake had freaked.

“And just why the hell did you freak, Parker?” Drake muttered aloud.

Because you wanted to say yes, you big doofus!

That would mean of course admitting that he and JJ was a couple.

“Hey Drake, you JJ's little boy toy yet?”

What the fuck did you say?”

He was some rookie that Drake barely knew who fancied himself a confidant of the CI Unit. Well he'd thought wrong. Rose had practically skinned him alive after the fight but the prick hadn't said anything since. Dee wasn't the only one who could kick ass. Drake was on his third cigarette when he realized he had his cell phone to his ear and it was ringing.

“MacLean.”

“Ryo?”

“Hey, Drake. What's up? Did you want Dee?”

“Um - no, actually I want - I need to talk to you.”

“Where are you? You sound like you're outside?”

“I am. I'm sitting in front of some office building smoking thirty--fucking--dollar cigarettes.”

“And you're doing this, why?”

“Because--,” Drake sighed. “Ryo, what made you decide to live with Dee?”

There was a brief pause, “Because I like the way he looks when he sleeps. I like the way he sings off key in the shower,” Ryo said.

Drake heard a protest in the background as Ryo continued. “I like watching him get all misty-eyed during the ending of The Bodyguard.”

“Ryo!”

“But I guess mainly it's because I love the fact that I can come home to him every night.”

Drake drew in the last of the cigarette and flicked the nub out onto the sidewalk.

“Stop fucking around, Drake.”

It was several moments before Drake realized Ryo had hung up on him.

Drake was up and running a second later. He pushed through the crowds, not caring who he pissed off. The clerk in the specialty store gave him an odd look when he burst in. In addition to the cigarettes they sold fine chocolates and other gifts as well. Drake grabbed the first box he laid eyes on. A bouquet of daises snatched hastily from the refrigerator was his last purchase.

His chest was on fire and his side ached by the time he got back to JJ's building. The elevator seemed to take forever. It wasn't until he stood in front of JJ's door that he fought to calm himself. He took a few moments until his heart stopped hammering and his breathing slowed.

The room was in semi-darkness when he entered. He saw JJ stretched out on the couch with the blanket draped haphazardly over his slim form. The bottle of wine was almost empty. Drake was disturbed to find the salty tracks of dried tears on JJ's cheeks.

“I'm sorry, JJ,” Drake said. “I won't hurt you like that again.”

Drake knelt and gently pressed his lips against JJ's. He felt it when his lover came awake. JJ's lips parted, allowing Drake entry. He gently probed the warm interior of JJ's mouth with his tongue. When Drake drew away, JJ smiled sleepily.

“You came back.”

“I said I would, didn't I?”

JJ sat up as he rubbed his eyes with his fists. As coherency arrived JJ noticed the flowers and candy. He smiled tentatively, “For me?”

“I hope you like them.”

JJ tore into the box gleefully. Drake watched him, smiling in wonderment at how this man could be so serious one minute and so innocent the next. They were traits that Drake found endearing.

“Drake, these are Swiss, how much did you pay for them?” JJ laid a piece on his tongue and swirled it around. He groaned in contentment as the chocolate filled his mouth. It was the most erotic thing Drake had ever seen and his reaction was immediate.

“To be honest, I didn't notice,” Drake managed to get the words out. “That's what you do to me JJ. I just wanted to get back to you. I didn't care about anything else.”

“Really?” JJ grinned. “Look, Drake-senpai about what I asked earlier--.”

“No JJ, I don't want to live here with you.”

JJ ducked his head but not before Drake saw the disappointment.

“I want us to get our own place.”

JJ's head snapped up. “Our own--?”

“I don't want to move here and we both know we don't want to move into my place,” Drake went on. “So why don't we find a place together?”

“So you don't mind?” JJ was literally beaming. “Everyone knowing about us?”

“Not anymore,” Drake said. “If Dee and Ryo don't give a fuck why should we?”

“Drake--,”

“There's one more thing,” Drake went on. He took JJ's hands in his and raised them to his lips. “I love you, JJ.”

“What?” JJ reached out a hesitant hand. “Did you just say you love me?”

“Yes.”

JJ closed his eyes and breathed in deeply as though savoring the words. “Please say it again.”

“I love you,” Drake cupped his hands on JJ's face. With everything that happened, with JJ being hurt both physically and emotionally, Drake knew he had to let JJ know how he felt not just for JJ but for himself as well. Despite being the injured party, JJ had shown Drake he loved him by his actions. Drake's only regret was that he hadn't said it sooner.

“Drake-senpai!” JJ sprang off the couch as he threw his arms around Drake, tipping him backwards. He landed with a grunt, JJ on top of him.

“I love you too, Drake,” JJ said.

JJ kissed him. Drake tasted the emotion behind it. JJ was telling him with that kiss how happy and content he was and how much he loved Drake Parker. When the younger man drew away and smiled down at Drake, he pulled him into a fierce hug.

“You seem to be ready,” JJ nodded to the evidence of Drake's desire. “Let's go again, shall we?”
