Chapter One: Taken

Ryo smiled at the back of his partner Dee Laytner's head. But as the slightly older cop turned to face him, Ryo quickly hid the smile and looked down at the file in his hands.

"Like I was saying, we should probably get a move on this soon."

"How soon?" Dee asked.

"Now, or as soon as possible."

Dee smiled. Ryo knew he liked fieldwork better then sitting around the office. And that was all they'd been doing until Ryo had kissed some ass and asked Berkley to give them something to get them out of here.

Berkley had only too willingly complied. That irked Ryo a little bit. Before Berk had moved to the 27th precinct Ryo knew anything he got from anyone, he got because he was a good cop. Now anything he got from the commish he got because the commish had a crush on him. It pissed him off. He didn't want that. He hated special treatment.

Dee, seemingly oblivious to his partner's inner thoughts, put his hand around Ryo's slender waist and steered him towards the door. Ryo blushed and tried halfheartedly to squirm out of the embrace. But Dee's arm felt so good, that he couldn't bring himself to push it off.

It was just as well that they were near Dee's car. Dee let go for a second to fish out his car keys and Ryo escaped to the other side. He slid into the passenger's seat.

AS soon as the car was started and they were turning out of the precinct parking lot, Dee turned to Ryo. "Damn glad to get out of that office."

Ryo couldn't help but smile. "Anyway, we're headed to a kidnapping. The guy's a nut, armed and has a hostage. There's really nothing anyone can do, but some of our buddies have been out there for a long time. We're just going to relieve them for a bit."

From the slightly vexed look in Dee's chocolate eyes, Ryo could tell he'd rather be doing something more exciting.

Figures Berkley'd give me an easy-as-shit field case. Doesn't want his precious little Ryo getting hurt, does he? Fuck that. I hope something does happen. Just to prove that I can handle myself. That damned Rose is getting irritating…

They got to the scene. Instantly a pair of detectives much like themselves appeared by the car.

"God, please tell me you two are Laytner and McLane!" one of them exclaimed.

Ryo nodded.

"Thank God!" the other one chimed in. "Commissioner Rose phoned in ahead to tell us you were coming. We've been here forever. It's only thanks to a half dozen cups of coffee that I'm still standing."

"Glad to know we're helping." Ryo smiled.

The other two detectives walked off in the direction of a cluster of cars. Ryo was reaching for the handle when Dee's strong hand stopped him. "Commissioner Rose phoned in ahead?" he asked in an accusing tone.

Ryo blushed a bright red. "I asked him if he'd give us something to get us out of the office. I know you hate it in there." I was just trying to make you happy. Don't get mad.

Dee leaned forward a bit more and kissed him, hard.

"Dee, what are you-"

He was cut off by another kiss. He gasped slightly, giving Dee an opening to get in some tongue. Ryo tried without success to suppress a slight moan.

Then, as suddenly as he had started, Dee stopped. He got out of the car without so much as a `say away from him man.' Ryo blinked a bit, trying to recover from the shock.

Dee looked back at the car, a small grin plastered on his face. "Coming, partner?"

Ryo nodded and got out of the car. Dee was like that sometimes, he reminded himself. Just confusing. But Ryo couldn't help but smile to himself. He liked that Dee was a puzzle. He liked trying to figure him out.

A cop walked up to the two of them, interrupting Ryo's thoughts. "You two the guys from the 27th precinct?"

They nodded. "I'm Dee Laytner and this sexy blond here is my partner, Ryo McLane." He grinned as the woman standing in front of them as he pulled Ryo forward and draped an arm around his shoulders. "What's been happening?"

Ryo blushed at the blatantly obvious display of affection Dee was performing. And now, in front of all these people, he really couldn't shake Dee of. Not that he wanted to.

The woman looked from Dee to Ryo and back to Dee, obviously a tad confused. "The man inside, Eric Tomita, he broke into a woman's apartment last night looking for money and a good time. The guy's a homicidal rapist. No one's quite sure what happened, but the woman, Charisse Rennington, managed to call 911 and we got here before he could get out. Now he's got a gun to her head and has been threatening to quote `blow her brains out' unquote if we don't send up a quarter million with an unarmed cop."

"The bastard's full of BS," Dee commented.

The woman nodded. "And it's an apartment complex, so there's plenty of other potential hostages around. He raved for a long time that he had lackeys all over the place that could break into any other room. We just did a heat-scan of the building and guess what? There are only two other people in the building. The landlord and his girlfriend. They left about twenty minutes ago to go get coffee for everybody."

"Go on," Ryo prompted.

"And get this. The gun he's got? A six-shot revolver. We've counted six shots so far. A warning shot to let Miss Rennington know that he was armed, two more to let us know. One to fake us into thinking he'd killed Charisse. One to make Charisse scream to let us know she was alive and one at an officer down here."

"So why doesn't someone just bust down the door and take him down?" Dee demanded.

"We only just realized what kind of gun he had, Mister Laytner. And that he's got no more bullets. And we've all been up the entire night. So we've been waiting for you two to show up. She handed Ryo a key. "They're in room 211. Knock `im dead."

Ryo smiled. "Don't worry, we will." And Dee tried unsuccessfully to hide the excited glint in his eye.

They crept up to the door, and Ryo inserted the key. The door swung open and the two of them stepped inside.

"Eric?" Ryo called. "Give it up. We know you don't have any more bullets."

Dee kicked open a door and he and Ryo went inside. They could hear muffled cried from the next room. "Come and get me," a voice taunted.

Ryo opened this one rather carefully, clutching his gun tightly. He pushed it open and stepped inside.

There was a woman on the bed, mostly naked and trembling. This must be Charisse. "It's all right Miss Rennington," he started to comfort her.

"No," she said softly. "Be careful. He has more bullets; he reloaded. He's… he's… behind…"

Ryo whipped around to see a tall, muscular man with his gun pressed to Dee's temple.

"Drop your guns, then don't move a muscle," the man hissed. Ryo's gun clattered to the floor, but Dee's didn't.

"Give it up you stupid son of a bitch. We know you don't have any more bullets."

The man quickly fired a shot towards Ryo, grazing his cheek like Dee had done not too long ago. Then the gun was back as Dee's temple before anyone had a chance to react.

Ryo panicked. "Do what he says, Dee," he pleaded, not wanting his partner to get hurt. Dee's gun joined Ryo's on the floor.

But Dee's usually cocky arrogance had already faded. "What do you want?" he demanded.

"I wanted a quarter million. What I got were two extremely rude cops. I may as well take one of you to insure proper payment."

The man took a step or two closer to Ryo. "You look nice and compliant. You'd do whatever I tell you. And you're so innocent." He whipped around to face Dee. "And you've got a nice fire in you. I like it when they're fighters." He stood behind Dee with his gun as the base of Dee's neck. "Damn. I just can't decide."

"What's your name?" Eric asked.

"Dee," Dee answered.

"And what's your lovely partner's name?"

"Randy." Dee didn't want to give him Ryo's Japanese name. He felt like that sweet little nickname would be soured if he heard this bastard say it.

"Dee and Randy, that's got a bit of a melodic sound. You know what, I think I'll take both of you."

Eric smiled sickly. "And you know what the beauty of this thing is?" Eric asked. "Randy there'll come because he's so concerned for your safety. Isn't that sweet?" He looked at Charisse. "We'll leave the slut behind. I don't need her anymore."

"Funny I didn't do this before," Eric commented as he marched Dee and Ryo down the stairs. Ryo first, then Dee and Eric, so Ryo couldn't try anything funny. "Guess I was waiting for someone new to come up."

They reached the building's front door.

"Get out your car keys," Eric commanded. "I need a ride."

Dee grumbled as he fished for the keys to his car. He grudgingly handed them to Eric.

"Very good. Now which car's yours?"

Dee pointed to the dark blue Chevy. Eric nodded. "Nice car. Randy, get over here."

Ryo walked back to them. He gently brushed his hand against Dee's arm in what he hoped was a sort of `it's okay, we'll get through this' sort of way. Dee's eyes flashed and Ryo knew that under any other circumstances, Dee would have his tongue in Ryo's mouth and his hands unbuttoning Ryo's shirt.

But this was not other circumstance, and Dee's only acknowledgement of the gesture was the flash in his eyes.

"What?"

"You get to drive. And no funny business or Dee-Dee here gets it." Ryo just took they keys silently, and then Eric proceeded to march them out the door.

They stopped just outside the building. "I'm taking these two hostage. Anyone moves and these two are toast. Anyone follows and, same result. I'm not fucking around here." He shot his gun off again. "And I'm reloaded, shitheads. Betcha didn't count on that now huh?" He continued their march to the car. "Expect to get a call in a few hours with my demands. See ya!"

Ryo got into the driver's seat, and Eric and Dee got into the back. "Take Main Street for a while and I'll tell you where to go after that," he commanded.

The honey-blond just nodded mutely, glad that shaking hands did not belie his semi-calm exterior.

Eric steered them out of town, and once the traffic became non-existence, Dee noted that they were not being followed. And since this wasn't a precinct can (he hated driving around in those junk buckets) there was no way for them to track them. Damn.

"Turn up that dirt road just a little and we're there."

The turned, and after a few more curves a small cabin came into view. They changed cars and Ryo drove them off again.

Dee's initial fear had begun to fade slightly, and was being replaced by a sense of detached acceptance. This was just a normal hostage situation. Hadn't he defused a thousand like this before? He looked up at Ryo. They were going to be fine.

That's exactly when it hit him. This guy wasn't just a murderer or any of those low-life punks they usually took out on hostage situations.

This guy was not only a convicted serial killer, but a rapist as well.

That's when Dee remembered exactly why he'd been so terrified in the first place. This guy was experienced. This guy knew that the police would come even if the hostages were dead. Just so long as he was the only one who knew the hostages were dead.

Shit shit shit.

A town came into view up on the horizon. Eric had them pull over at the first motel he saw.

Eric flicked out a set of keys and opened the door. There were about ten other people inside that greeted Eric with a `heya' or `hi boss.' Eric ushered Dee and Ryo in and shut the door.

He he! Cliff-hanger…. Sort of…okay, not really.

So, what do you think? You'd better like it, `cuz I just finished chapter 2! (Haha! My first fanfic and I'm on chapter 2 without even posting it! Cool!) So yeah and whatever. Read and Review. Pwease? *blinks innocently*
