Chapter 3
“Ah! That feels good!” Dee said, stretched out on the floor with one hand curled behind his head as he smoked. “Full and happy. Nothing like pizza and beer to make a man satisfied.”
“Is that all you think about? Food, and drink?” Ryo said with a smile for his partner.
Dee turned his head to look at Ryo with a wicked grin. “Not all,” he replied suggestively, running his gaze over Ryo's body where he lay on the lounge.
Ryo felt his face flush at that look. He was going to have to do something about that!, he thought. I can't keep blushing every time Dee even looks at me!
That brought back his earlier worries. Work.
Dee saw the change over Ryo's face, the flash of worry. He sighed. His partner was thinking about something again. Something that he wasn't happy about.
He sighed again. Dee really wasn't one for talking much. He had always been a bit of the lone wolf type, rebel without a cause sort of stuff. He wasn't used to expressing his feelings or, he admitted, thinking things through that often. Ryo, on the other hand, thought things out almost to the point of obsession. Maybe that was why they made a good team.
Dee rolled to his side, propping his head on his hand. “Okay, Ryo. Spit it out.”
“Huh?” Ryo was startled out of his thoughts.
“Don't play dumb,” Dee said. “It doesn't suit you. Though then again, actually it does sometimes.”
“What?” Ryo was trying to get his head around what Dee was saying.
Dee rolled his eyes. “What's up, man? You've been stressing out about something all through dinner, and now you look like your brain's gonna explode if you don't say something.”
“Is it that obvious?” Ryo asked worriedly.
Dee rolled on to his back again, eyes closed. “Yeah. It is. At least to me.”
“Sorry.”
Dee cracked an eye open. “What are you apologizing for? You haven't done anything, have you?”
“No, but…”
“Then don't be such an idiot!” Dee sat up abruptly, reaching for his beer. “Look, I'm not asking for an apology. I'm just asking you to talk to me. Tell me what's up. Is it still about us slowing things down?”
“No, that's fine,” Ryo assured him.
“You sure?”
“Yes. It's not that.”
“Okay, scratch worry number one. What's worry number two then?”
“Uhmm…”
“Stop stalling! Just say it! I'm not going to get mad!”
“You already are,” Ryo pointed out calmly as Dee's voice had risen.
Dee slumped onto the table, forehead resting on the top in exasperation. “Ryo, I don't know how you do it, but somehow you manage to turn nearly every one of our conversations into me being the bad guy!”
“That's not true!”
“Is to!”
“Is not!”
They glared at each other, and then suddenly, as one, they burst out laughing. After a while, Ryo reached up and wiped away a tear of laughter.
“That felt good,” he said, still smiling.
“We're morons,” Dee said. His stomach still hurt from the laughter. He turned to look at Ryo again, face now serious. “Come on, Ryo. Won't you tell me what's bothering you? I want to help you, you know that.”
Ryo looked at his partner, knowing what he was saying was true. “I know you do, Dee. I just sometimes have trouble knowing how to say things to you.”
“So it is still about us?” Dee prodded.
“Well, yes. Sort of.”
“Okay. So what about us? You said you're okay with us still being together,” Dee held his breathe waiting for Ryo's answer, then let it out with relief as he replied in the affirmative.
“Yes, that's fine.”
“So what is it?”
“Work,” Ryo said.
Dee looked at him blankly for a moment. “Work?” How did they get onto work when they were just speaking about them?!
“Yeah,” Ryo continued, looking more and more concerned. Not a good sign, Dee thought, watching his partner. “What happens at work?”
Dee reached up and scratched his head. “Ah, Ryo, you're gonna have to give me a few more clues here. I'm not quite following, buddy.”
Ryo rolled his eyes. “Dee, what happens when we go back to work tomorrow?”
“What do you mean?”
Ryo suddenly sat up and swung his feet to the floor, pinning Dee with a fierce glare. “Are you really this thick, or are you just trying to jerk me around?!”
Dee was a little taken aback with the vehemence of Ryo's reaction. He held out a supplicating hand. “Honest, Ryo, I'm not trying to mess with you. I just don't get what you are trying to say!”
Ryo just continued to glare at Dee, then slumped a little. He could see that Dee truly was completely confused.
“Look, Dee. We're together now, right?”
“Damn right!” Dee said firmly.
“Okay, so how do we act at work? What do we say to people there? What are they going to think? What are they going to say? Hell, what's the Chief going to say?!” Dee could see Ryo getting more and more wound up. “Is he even going to let us continue to work together? Are they going to split us up? What's JJ going to do to me? He's been after you for so long, he'll probably kill me!”
“Whoa, whoa, Ryo! Slow down there!” Dee said. He got to his feet and sat on the couch next to his frantic partner, pulling his legs up to sit cross legged, facing Ryo.
“Listen,” he said, making his partner turn to face him. “It's all right.”
“How can you say that?” Ryo said, his voice tight. “It's not all right. Everything's different!”
“Is that a bad thing?”
“Yes! I mean, no! I don't know what I mean!!”
Dee reached out and brushed his lips over Ryo's, nothing more than a gentle pressure. He felt Ryo relax almost immediately and sat back again. “Take it easy, okay?” he said reassuringly. “We don't have to say anything at work, Ryo. It's no-one else's business what we do.”
“But they know about us!”
“How can they know about us when we didn't even know about us until the other night?” Dee wanted to know.
“But they know you've been chasing me! You told them all, right at the start!”
“So? They don't have to know I got you, do they?” Dee said logically. “Besides, they're so used to me chasing after you that it's not going to seem any different.”
“But they'll know!”
“How? Tell me how they're going to know, Ryo? Unless you want to tell them.”
“No!”
“Didn't think so,” Dee couldn't stop the slight touch of bitterness creep into his voice.
He wanted nothing more than to tell everyone about himself and Ryo. To shout it from the rooftops, write it across the sky for all to see, but he knew that Ryo didn't want that. He still hoped that he would openly acknowledge it one day, to not be afraid to express it in public, but it was too soon yet. So he pushed his frustration aside, and focused back on reassuring his partner.
“So, if you're not going to tell `em, and I'm not going to, then how are they are going to know?”
“Because they will. They're not stupid!”
“Well, that's entirely debatable.” Dee said sardonically. “Where JJ's concerned, he's definitely one sandwich short of a picnic!”
“Laugh all you like, Dee, but they aren't that stupid. Even JJ. He's probably going to be the first one to notice!”
“Notice what? Me chasing after you? Hell, I've been doing that for years so it will just be like normal. What's going to be different? Just how are they going to know anything's gone on?”
“Because they'll see it in me!”
“See what? You brushing me off? Playing hard to get? You've been doing that for years too, so that won't have changed!”
“I….I can't look at you without….” Ryo couldn't continue.
“Without what?”
Ryo looked over at Dee and blushed, before dropping his eyes.
“O….kay,” Dee said, watching his partner's face redden. “That could be a bit of a give away.” Though secretly he was ecstatic that he could affect Ryo that way. That he could bring a blush to that beautiful face just from a look gave his ego a real boost! Not to mention it brought a flush of heat to somewhere other than his face.
“Look, Ryo, do you want to split up? Get new partners? Would that make it easier?”
“No!” Ryo said vehemently. “I don't want that! I couldn't stand not knowing what you were doing, or if you were okay. At least if we're together I know I can watch out for you!”
“Hey, easy there! I was just asking!” Dee said.
Ryo looked at him with large eyes. “Does that mean …you want to?”
“Huh?”
“You want to split up?”
“You moron!” Dee said, reaching out and grabbing the back of Ryo's neck to push him down on his back on the lounge. He straddled his partner, looking fiercely down at him. “You fucking stupid idiot!” he spat. “How can you even think that! I've waited all this time for you. Wanting nothing but to have you by my side, loving you and hoping all the time you felt the same for me. Do you think, even for one minute, that I'd want to let you go?!”
He dropped his head and kissed Ryo. There was nothing gentle about this kiss. It wasn't soft, gentle or considerate. It was hard, forceful, almost brutal. It was possessive and bruising.
Dee heard Ryo let out a moan at the pressure, but he didn't let up. He was going to suck out every bit of resistance, every doubt his partner had about all this, until Ryo begged for mercy!
He felt Ryo's hands slide around his back, clutching his skin, blunt nails digging into the flesh. Suddenly, Ryo's tongue forced itself into Dee's mouth to plunder the depths, returning Dee's kiss.
Dee tried to regain the upper hand, but Ryo wasn't giving in that easily. Their tongues and lips dueled for supremacy, their hands beginning to roam over flesh, flesh that was getting hotter with every touch.
Dee felt himself becoming light headed, and lifted his head, breaking the kiss. He was panting, both from lack of oxygen and from the desire racing through his body. Ryo lay beneath him, face flushed, hair spread out on the cushion under his head, breathing just as heavily. Dee could see his lips looked red and swollen. He flicked his tongue out to lick his own lips, and felt the same sensation of swelling. Ryo had given back as good as he had got. Dee looked down at his partner and couldn't help but smile possessively. How he loved this man!
“Ryo, I don't want any other partner. Not for work, not like this. You're the only one for me. Okay?” Maybe one day Ryo would really understand, and believe that. Dee hoped so.
“Okay,” Ryo acknowledged in a quiet voice.
“Good,” and Dee sat back, pulling Ryo upright as well so they were both sitting close together, knees touching. “So why don't we just take it as it comes tomorrow, eh? Maybe it won't be so bad. You're not facing this on your own, you know. I'll be with you.”
Ryo sighed softly, still looking a little worried. “I guess.”
Dee made up his mind then. Ryo needed some time to himself. To think about everything they had done, the time they had been together, and what they've been talking about.
He stood up abruptly and disappeared into the bedroom, returning with his clothes over his arms, jacket around his shoulders. He walked over to where Ryo still sat on the couch. Ryo looked up at him, perplexed. Leaning down, Dee pressed a soft kiss to Ryo's abused lips.
“I'll see you tomorrow, all right? I'm going to head home now. Give me a call in the morning,” and he walked to the door.
Ryo got quickly to his feet and followed hurriedly after Dee, stretching out a hand to catch his arm as he reached the door. “Dee! Where are you going?!”
Dee turned to look at him. “Home. We both need a good night's sleep, or we'll feel like shit for work tomorrow.”
There was a panicky look in Ryo's eyes. “You don't have to go!” he said, clinging to Dee's arms.
Had he done something wrong again? Ryo thought frantically. Had he made Dee that mad he was just going to leave?!
Dee saw that look and leant forward to wrap his arms around Ryo, holding him close.
“Ryo, it's all right. You're going to give yourself an ulcer. I'm not going because I'm mad, or anything like that. I just think that we could both do with some sleep and to think about things. You said you wanted to take it slowly, remember? Well, this is doing just that.”
He leant back, keeping his hands resting on Ryo's shoulders whilst Ryo still clung to his waist. He smiled at his partner. “You can't know how wonderful this past day has been for me. It's been the best bloody time of my life!”
He was pleased to see a smile begin to form on Ryo's face. He touched Ryo's cheek softly. “It's really meant a lot to me, and I loved every minute of it. Not to mention I can't wait to be able to do it all again some time! However, we do have other things to take care of, and one of them is work. So let's both get some sleep and we'll see each other tomorrow.”
Dee's smile broadened. “By the way, make certain you take a change of clothes to work because I'm taking you out on a date tomorrow night!”
Ryo's expression changed from worry to surprise, and then to pleased wonder. “A date?”
“Yep!” Dee said, leaning in and giving Ryo another soft kiss, before turning to the door and opening it.
“Where?”
Dee winked at him. “Not telling. It's a surprise!”
He was more than pleased at the delight that shone on Ryo's face now. That look made everything worthwhile.
He paused in the act of closing the door. “So get some sleep and call me, okay? I want your voice to be the first thing I hear when I wake up!”
“Okay,” Ryo said softly, leaning in and kissing Dee back. “I promise.”
