Chapter 4

He heard ringing; loud, persistent, dragging him from his slumber.

Damn thing!, he growled in his mind, as his hand flailed around before finally clasping the vibrating object. He dragged it to his ear.

“'lo?” he mumbled.

“Morning,”

The sound of that voice brought a smile immediately to Dee's face, and his eyes opened fully. “Morning,” he replied.

“This is your early morning wake up call! Ryo said chirpily.

“Best bloody one I've had.” Dee said, snuggling deeper into the pillows, listening with pleasure to Ryo's smooth voice.

“Did you sleep well?”

“Yeah. Like a rock.”

“Me, too. Guess we were both pretty tired.”

“Well, we had been rather…energetic yesterday.” Dee couldn't stop the edge of suggestiveness in his voice.

“Dee…” Ryo said warningly.

“What?”

“You can't go making those sort of comments at work, okay?”

“All right. I promise. Anyways, no more than usual.” He heard Ryo sigh.

“You're going to make this really hard, aren't you?”

“I always like to make you hard.”

“Dee!” Ryo said in shocked outrage.

Dee couldn't help but chuckle at his partner's still innocent outlook on their relationship. “I'm sorry, Ryo. Just couldn't help myself.”

“Well, you had better! Or I'll make you share an office with JJ!”

“Ah, man, you wouldn't!”

“Watch me!” Ryo threatened.

Dee quieted. He knew damn well that Ryo really would carry out that threat if he pushed him too far. “Look, I promise I'll behave, okay?”

“You'd better!”

“Honest!”

“Huh!”

Dee glanced at the clock next to the bed. “Guess I'd better let you go to get ready.”

“Already am,” Ryo replied.

Typical, Dee thought, his ever organized, precise partner was up and ready for work whilst he still lay in bed. “Then I'd better get ready, or the Badger will skin me for being late. I'll see you at work.”

“Will do.”

“Hey, Ryo?”

“Yeah?”

“Love you.”

“You too.”

Ryo arrived at the precinct and parked. He sat in the car, hands on the steering wheel, making no move to get out. He noticed his knuckles were white from gripping the wheel so hard. He deliberately took a deep calming breath and unclenched his hands.

It's going to be all right, he thought to himself. Just because women like Diana could pick up on changes in him, doesn't mean anyone else would. In fact, it really was unlikely that any of the others would notice anything different at all. After all, they're guys, and even he knew how thick guys could be about this sort of stuff!

He slowly got out of the car, locked it carefully, and made his way to the side door. He paused for a moment, took another deep breath, and entered.

He casually waved to the desk sergeant, saying hello to people he passed as he walked to their office. Opening the door he saw he was alone. Not surprising. Dee would probably be another ten minutes or so before he got in due to his longer commute.

Ryo sat down at his desk, shifting files and pens aimlessly around. What would today be like?, he wondered.

He looked around the office. It looked no different, yet somehow it seemed different. Perhaps because he felt different. Very different. Yet the same.

He groaned to himself. He was doing it again. Obsessing, as Dee would accuse him of. Tying himself up in knots.

He didn't regret anything. Not one bit. He'd never let Dee go. Hadn't wanted to for a long time, but he had needed time to sort his own feelings out. He had known that Dee was important to him, but he had to figure out just how important, and why.

Now he had done that, and he was happy with it, but it was still all new to him. He had only previously been with girls, and even though he had caught himself sometimes noticing other guys, he had never even thought of pursing anything there. Not until meeting Dee.

Then again, if Dee hadn't been so persistent, would he have done anything? Probably not, Ryo admitted to himself. He'd been too confused, too scared by it all. So he probably would have just ignored it, and then he and Dee would never have got together. His heart clenched at that thought. The mere idea of not being with Dee, now that he was, was almost terrifying. So he was happy with how things turned out. He wouldn't want to change anything now.

But what was it all going to mean? Would it affect their work? Could they still work together? Ryo worried that his concern for Dee would actually be detrimental to their work. They sometimes worked on serious cases, deadly serious. Ones where there was considerable danger. Would he be so worried about Dee's safety that he would make a mistake and do something to put them both in danger? The key to police work was to keep a clear head. Maintain your cool, and get on with the job. Lose that perspective, and that's when accidents happened. Would his feelings be more of a hazard than a help?

He put his head in his hands in despair. Gods!, he thought desperately. How would he feel if something happened to Dee because of his mistake? Because he didn't do the right thing? What if he let his emotions cloud his thinking? He wouldn't be able to bear it!

Maybe he should ask for a new partner. He had to keep Dee safe. He couldn't be responsible for anything happening to him!

Perhaps they needed that distance between them whilst they were at work. It's not like they wouldn't still see each other at times, even if their shifts didn't always coincide. And they would still be seeing each other outside of work so it's not like they would have broken up. Though being on other shifts would certainly limit the amount of time they could spend together, even outside of work. Working the graveyard shift and then being expected to play with your partner afterwards, wouldn't make for a harmonious relationship for long!

No, with the way the shifts and even cases could work, it might be weeks, maybe even months before he and Dee would be able to do anything more than just leave a message on their corresponding answering machines, or fall asleep next to each other!

Though that idea was quite pleasant in itself, Ryo thought, as he felt his cheeks flush. Oh, no, not already! He got up and paced around the room, trying to get the image of a naked Dee slumbering peacefully in the middle of Ryo's large bed, crumpled sheets clear evidence of what activities they had been up to, out of his mind. His face reddened further and he walked faster. Stop it! Get your mind out of the gutter, for gods sakes!

This was exactly what he was worried about. Just that one little thought turned immediately into a full blown, vivid colour fantasy, with Dee playing centre stage. How could Ryo be concentrating properly on his work if that was going to happen so easily?

No, he had to do something. He obviously couldn't stop himself. He just didn't seem to have enough will power to stop thinking things like that. Dee's face constantly filled his mind, his every thought.

He wasn't any good to Dee like this. He was just going to cause him problems. Or kill him. Ryo's guts clenched at a picture of Dee lying in the street, in a pool of blood. A shudder shook him from head to toe. He put a hand to his mouth. He was going to be sick! He dragged his mind away from that thought. It hadn't happened. He hadn't done anything yet. Dee was fine, and would remain fine. Ryo would see to that. Nothing was going to happen to him!

Ryo returned to his pacing, nodding to himself as he thought. Yes, that's what he had to do. He would request a change of partners. He knew that Berkley would probably be more than happy to accommodate him.

I wonder if he will notice anything different, Ryo thought, stopping mid stride. Argh! Between JJ and Berkley, Ryo was beginning to think that a transfer to another precinct would be a better option!

He wandered back to his desk, slumping down in his chair, twirling a pencil absently in his fingers, watching it go round and round, just like his thoughts.

He had to make sure that Dee was safe, no matter what. That is what was important. So Ryo would do what ever he had to, to make sure that was the case. And if that meant having a new partner, or even transferring to another precinct, he would do it. He could handle it. Admittedly a move to another precinct would be a lot harder because there was no chance of seeing Dee at all.

Ryo frowned at that thought. No, no, that wasn't a good idea. He wanted to see Dee! He wanted to keep him safe, but he still wanted to see Dee as much as he could. So, scratch a transfer.

Which left him with a change of partners. Okay, he could do that. He would still be able to see Dee then. Maybe not every day, sometimes even longer, but he would still be able to see him. So what if some of the cases might take up most of Dee's time and Ryo couldn't share that with him, couldn't help take up the workload. Though Ryo wouldn't miss having to write up all Dee's reports when the bludger slacked off!

It's true that Dee wouldn't be able to talk to him much about his cases anymore, so Ryo wouldn't be able to help him out. The thought of not being able to share all those times with Dee, to be such a close part of his life and work, made his eyes ache. But he could do it.

He heard the sound of a door opening and then a familiar voice saying, “What's the matter?”

He looked around to see Dee standing at the doorway, jacket thrown casually over one shoulder, looking at Ryo with a wide smile. Ryo felt his body grow warm, basking in that gaze. He smiled back.

No, he thought, looking at Dee standing there. No, he couldn't change partners. Dee was his partner in all ways. At work, at home, any where. He wanted to be by Dee's side always, through everything. He wanted to be able to share everything with Dee, both the good and the bad. He didn't want to miss one minute, one second, of that time, if he could help it.

He felt himself suddenly relax, every muscle unclenching. The headache he had had since arriving that morning dissipated. He smiled back at Dee.

“Not a thing, partner.”
