Chapter 7

“Oh, man!” Dee said, leaning back, letting his head fall backwards, arms hanging at the side of his chair. “There's got to be a lead here somewhere!”

Ryo, slumped over his desk, raised his head from his crossed arms. His face reflected Dee's; tired, drawn, dark circles under worried eyes. “We've been through everything. The whole task force has got nothing.”

Dee propped his feet up on the desk before him. It was a clear sign of just how tired Ryo was that he didn't chide his partner for this action as he usually would. “It's not that that we've got nothing. It's more there's almost too many leads, but nothing concrete. We've been chasing after shadows and whispers for months.”

Ryo sat up, straightening his back, wincing a little as tired muscles complained. “I know, but we've got to get a break soon.”

“This bastard is just too damn good!” Dee snarled, glaring into space.

Ryo rubbed his aching eyes. The past three months had seen not just Dee and himself, but the entire team on the taskforce created to catch a serial killer. It was a nasty case, for the killer targeted young teens no more than 16 years old, and what was even worse was he was a sexual predator as well, preying on both males and females. It would have to be one of the most brutal cases Ryo had come across in all his years on the Force. The state of the bodies that had been found had made even the most hardened cop turn green. The case board usually held the pictures of the victims, including the resultant findings, but not this time. The pictures were too horrible to have up on a constant basis, and there was no way to forget them either. Their sheer brutality was burned into their brains.

Ryo had found it particularly disturbing. He worried constantly about Bikky and Carol. A number of the abductions had occurred around schools in the area, and although he knew that both children were quite responsible most of the time, he knew only too well that it only needed one small mistake that could lead to them becoming no more than another statistic. To this end, he had arranged to try and pick them up from school, and taken them either back home or brought them to the station whilst he finished a shift. Dee had helped out as well, sometimes letting the kids stop with him when Ryo had to work late, but it was wearying all round.

All of them, Ted, Drake, even JJ, were completely sickened by this case and they all desperately wanted to catch the perpetrator, but even with all the manpower and resources available to them, they didn't seem to be any closer to doing so.

Ryo looked over at Dee, still leaning back, eyes closed. He could see the slow rise and fall of his chest and realized that he had actually fallen asleep. Not surprising. They were all living on very little rest. He had already had a brief catnap himself, just earlier.

He let out a weary sigh. Things just hadn't seemed to be the same between them. Not since that night, the night he had had to cancel their date. It wasn't that he had wanted to do that. He hadn't had much choice, and he had thought that Dee would understand. No, he had to be fair. This wasn't Dee's fault. It wasn't like Dee was acting like a jerk or anything about it. It just happened that this case had come in the very next day, and now three months later, they still seemed no closer to a resolution. They had both been working so hard and such long hours, that between work and worrying and organizing Bikky and Carol, Ryo had had no time to spend with Dee. Certainly they had had no time for either of them to try and set up another date. About the closest they had come to being intimate again had been when they were in the file room a while back.

They had been in there for hours, pouring over old case files, papers scattered over the table and floor. Ryo was sitting at the small desk, whilst Dee sat cross legged on the floor.

“Gagh!” Dee cried, pulling at his hair. He sneezed violently. “I hate this place! It plays havoc with my sinuses!” He sneezed again.

Ryo looked at him sympathetically and smiled. “Perhaps you're just allergic to work?” he said, teasing his partner.

Dee glared at him, rubbing his nose. “Come here and say that,” he growled, leaning down and shuffling some papers over to another pile. “All we seem to be doing is making more piles!” he exclaimed.

Ryo stood and walked around to him, crouching down and sorting the papers he held in his hand into the various heaps Dee had created. “It's got to eventually give us something.” Ryo said, as he dropped the last one. Dee sneezed again. “Are you sure it's just the dust?” Ryo asked, concerned.

Dee sniffed as Ryo reached out a hand and touched his forehead. Dee's skin felt warm on his hand, but not hot. That's good, he thought. He had been worried Dee was actually sick.

Dee reached up and captured his hand, bringing it to his lips to place a soft kiss on the palm. Ryo shivered with delight at the hot flush coursing through his body at that touch. Leaning forward onto his knees, Dee reached up his other hand and cupped the back of Ryo's head, pulling him in closer until their lips touched. Ryo couldn't stop the small gasp that escaped him at the contact. He had almost forgotten just how good the reality was. So much better than the memories and fantasies he had been living on lately.

Dee took immediate advantage of his slightly open mouth and slipped his tongue inwards, plunging deep into Ryo's mouth, circling over his teeth, sliding under Ryo's tongue, caressing the roof of his mouth. Ryo leant into the kiss, allowing Dee to pull him in closer, so they were both kneeling, bodies pressed together. Dee's hand curled around the back of Ryo's head, fingers threaded through his hair, holding him firmly in place, his other hand still held one of Ryo's.

Ryo allowed his free hand to wrap around Dee's waist, stretching up his spine. He could feel the shift of muscles under his touch through Dee's thin business shirt. Ryo leant closer into the kiss, breathing in Dee's every breath, his tongue dancing with his partner's.

Ryo then took command of the situation, pushing his own tongue into Dee's mouth, forcing him into a more submissive roll. Not that he really seemed to mind. Ryo had noticed that sometimes, only sometimes, Dee seemed quite happy to lay back and let Ryo take charge, and Ryo had to admit that sometimes he liked to be able to do just that.

Ryo pulled back a little and ran his tongue lightly over Dee's lips, tracing their outline, almost teasing him, before plunging back inside. He heard Dee's soft moan, the tightening of the hand in his hair. Oh, yes, sometimes Dee did like Ryo in control!

Greatly daring, Ryo slid his hand downwards, hesitating a moment, before grasping Dee's buttocks firmly and pushing his pelvis forward. He could feel Dee's body pressed tighter against his, could feel Dee's erection hard against his own. He heard Dee let out a deeper moan at this pressure, felt his pelvis grind against Ryo's.

Ryo almost swore he could feel Dee melt in his arms, no matter how corny that sounded, but it was really what it seemed like. He could feel Dee's body become more malleable, seeming to meld against his, as though every particle of air that would have been an obstacle between them was gone.

Ryo applied more pressure so their hips were almost locked together. He shifted pleasurably at the contact himself, feeling his erection beginning to ache, wanting more. Dee released his hand so he could place it on Ryo's buttocks, drawing him closer still, applying even more pressure. Ryo heard them moan in unison, their kisses were hot and wet now, tongues searching each other out. Ryo felt too hot, his tie was too constricting.

Dee broke the kiss first, and immediately dropped his lips to the sensitive skin on the underside of Ryo's jaw. Ryo tipped his head back, allowing Dee better access, shivering at the feel of his lips grazing over his flesh, the gentle nips, the hot breathe that seemed to burn. He could hear his own breathing coming in fast and shallow pants. He clasped the back of Dee's head, the touch of his silky hair falling through his fingers making him shake again. Every nerve in his body seemed so highly sensitized as he pressed Dee's lips closer to his yearning flesh.

Dee's movements became more hurried, frantic almost, as he roamed across Ryo's neck, out to his ears, raining light kisses over his face, before plunging back inside his mouth for another deep kiss. Ryo could feel his body quivering, every muscle shaking infinitesimally. Dee's every touch was making him burn with a fire that was building ever higher in the pit of his stomach. He felt a tugging at his throat and realized that Dee's fingers were pulling at his tie, before tackling the top buttons of his shirt. He shivered again, this time in anticipation, anticipation of Dee's touch. He wasn't disappointed.

As soon as Dee had two buttons undone he slid his hand inwards, palm pressed against Ryo's hot skin. Ryo couldn't stop his own desire to touch Dee, tugging the tail of his shirt out so he could slide his hand underneath. Dee's skin felt like it was burning against his cool palm, soft and smooth. He pushed his hand upwards as high as he could, tracing the vertebrae and lower ribs, fingers searching out the sensitive spots. Dee transferred his mouth back to Ryo's neck, licking at the exposed flesh. Both hands began to undo the rest of the buttons.

Suddenly, there was a crashing sound as the entry door at the other end of the room was flung open violently.

“DEE!” the cry reverberated through the confined space.

Ryo pushed Dee violently away in shock, falling backwards himself to sit on the floor, Dee mirroring the motion. They sat there looking at each other; Ryo with fear, shame and embarrassment, Dee with anger, and a little hurt.

Ryo quickly fumbled with his hands, trying to redo his buttons and tie, Dee made no move to amend his attire before JJ suddenly appeared around the stacks.

“There you are! Geez! What a mess! You'd think you two would have been able to have done a better job than this!”

Ryo glanced down and realized what JJ was talking about. All the neat stacks of information that he and Dee had spent the last few hours creating, were now a strewn mess. He flushed as he realized that they had been so wrapped up in what they had been doing, they had forgotten they had been leaning over their work. He sighed. What a wasted effort!

“What do you want, JJ?” Dee growled.

“The Commissioner wants Ryo.”

“Why?”

“I don't know.” JJ shrugged.

“Huh! Guess we'll have to go see what's up.”

“Not you, Dee. Only Ryo.”

“Hey, we're partners!”

“I don't make the rules. You'd better go,” he said to Ryo. “It took me ages to find out you were down here, so you better not keep him waiting.”

Ryo stood, going to grab his jacket from the back of the chair. He glanced at the mess of papers that Dee still sat in the middle of. JJ saw his look.

“Don't worry. I'll give Dee a hand to sort it out. We'll have it finished.”

“Thanks, JJ,” Ryo said. He looked down at Dee who was still silent. He didn't really want to leave. His body was still singing with desire, skin tingling. He wanted to kiss Dee so much, but he couldn't with JJ standing there. “I'll see you later.”

“Yeah,” was Dee's reply, as he leant forward to begin pushing papers back where they should be.

Ryo waited another heartbeat, willing Dee to look up, but he didn't. With a sad inaudible sigh, he turned and left. He wished he could have seen Dee's eyes.

That had been the last time they had seemed to spend any time together. Ryo rubbed his eyes again. Another headache was starting up.

“Need an aspirin?” he heard Dee ask. Glancing up, he saw his partner still in the laid back position in his chair, but now with eyes open.

Ryo managed a weak smile, “Yeah. I think I do.”

Dee dropped his feet, leaning forward to open a drawer and rummaged around in it. “Here,” He tossed a packet onto the desk in front of Ryo.

“Thanks,” he said, popping two from their protective sheet.

Dee watched as Ryo stood to get a cup of water to wash the tablets down. He could see how weary Ryo was, and knew he wasn't much better. His whole body ached from tiredness, it was all he could do to just keep his eyes open and his brain functioning enough to keep working.

He watched Ryo lean heavily against the wall next to the cooler, eyes closed, sipping the water. Even tired Ryo looked wonderful, although Dee wished he could wipe way the exhaustion from his partner's face.

He felt so damn frustrated! Frustrated enough that he could almost scream, if he wasn't so god-damn tired! He couldn't believe it. It had been three months! Three whole months since he and Ryo had cemented their relationship. Since that night when Ryo had told him that he loved him, that he agreed to be in a relationship with Dee. He had thought all their problems were finally over, that they had finally reached an understanding and the worst was past. They had had a wonderful weekend together, one of the best Dee had ever had in his life. It had been sweet and gentle, and sexy as all hell!

He had really thought that the time the two of them had spent together had conquered all Ryo's concerns. He had, at least, seemed a lot more comfortable about `them', even if he had still worried about everything else. Then the next day when they had returned to work, it had just all gone to crap!

First their broken date, and he had been so looking forward to that all that day, anticipating the pleasure on Ryo's face. It had been Dee's chance to really show Ryo it wasn't just about sex as far as he was concerned. However, instead of a romantic evening together, Dee had ended up at home alone, eating left-over Chinese take-way.

He wasn't angry at Ryo. Okay, at first he had been, simply because all his wonderful plans had been screwed up. But he wasn't mad because Ryo had gone home to be with Bikky after his return from camp. He had completely forgotten about Bikky too, but on his part it was more wishful thinking! That kid had been nothing but a thorn in his side where Ryo was concerned and his attempt at establishing a meaningful relationship with him. However, Dee couldn't ignore the fact of the boy's existence either. He was a big part of Ryo's life, and if Dee wanted to continue to remain with Ryo, then he had to accept Bikky's presence and all the complications he posed for them.

So he wasn't really mad that Ryo had gone home that night, he understood his reasons, but he had still hated it. Then, to add insult to injury, this case had turned up the very next day. Since then, neither of them had had any time for anything except work, day and night. All of them, Ted, Drake and JJ, all looked like the walking dead. Even Berkley was looking tired. That thought secretly pleased Dee. Perhaps now the man would stop pursing Ryo!

This case was being tough on all of them, but probably more so on Ryo. He was worrying himself sick over Bikky and Carol, worried that something would happen to them. There had been one such close call with Carol a while back. They'd been lucky then. Dee didn't like to rely on luck like that again. Ryo was taking every precaution he could to ensure that the two kids would be safe. It still didn't stop him from worrying though.

Dee sighed to himself. Three months, three whole months! He had barely even been able to touch Ryo, not even casually on the hand or anything like that. There had only been about four times that he had managed to slip in a quick good-bye kiss, no more than a peck on the check as they left. They were constantly surrounded by other people usually. The rest of the time they were both busy ploughing through work, or too tired to even contemplate a bit of hanky-panky. Only one time had it seemed that Ryo might have given in to Dee's advances - that time in the filing room.

Dee could remember the feel of Ryo's kneeling body pressed up against his, the taste of his skin on his lips. Ryo hadn't resisted, in fact he had seemed just as eager for it to go further, at least a bit more. Dee had felt Ryo's erection pressing against him. Oh, yes, Ryo had certainly been ready for more, and did nothing to discourage Dee!

Dee had almost been frantic with desire. It had already been more than a month by that time, and he was aching to touch Ryo in that way again. He craved it like a drug addict, his body shaking with his want and need. He had so wanted Ryo at that time!

Then suddenly JJ had burst in, interrupting the moment. Ryo had completely panicked as usual. Not that Dee would have really expected him to act any differently, as much as he wished he would. Ryo's face had been flushed as he tried to get his clothes in order. Then he had left, and Dee had been stuck with JJ.

Dee had been so sexed up still he had half contemplated jumping JJ just to get some relief, but no matter how willing he knew JJ would be, he wasn't quite that much of a cruel bastard. That incident had been more than six weeks ago, and not another moment had arisen to carry on from there.

He continued to watch Ryo slowly drinking. He still thought he was one of the most beautiful people he had ever seen. Everything about him was wonderful; his face, his eyes, his body, his smile. The way he walked, the way he talked, his dedication to work and his duty, his caring and responsibility to Bikky, and even Carol. Everything about Ryo, Dee loved completely, but no matter how much he loved Ryo, he had no control over him. Although Ryo had said he loved Dee, he couldn't help but wonder if Ryo really meant it. Or if Ryo really understood and accepted it.

Dee acknowledged it was a big step for Ryo, and it was all very new and probably a little frightening for him, but would that ever change? Could Ryo learn to change and accept it openly? Dee wondered.

Ryo didn't seem to find their current forced separation difficult. Dee had hoped that with Ryo's acknowledgement of their relationship this would mean that Ryo would want to spend more time with him, that he would miss Dee. But that hadn't happened.

Admittedly, this case allowed for little spare time out of work, but Ryo didn't make any attempts at work to get Dee alone, even for a moment, to snatch a quick kiss or feel. There were no late night phone calls to say hello, just to hear his voice. It seemed that Ryo was happy enough to leave work, say good-bye to Dee, and go home. He always greeted Dee warmly enough the next day at the start of shift, with a broad smile and a gentle pat on the back, but nothing more.

Was Ryo regretting his hasty words that night on the bridge? Had this enforced separation made him re-evaluate his feelings and decide he had made a mistake? They hadn't even had the opportunity to really talk about any of it again. It was never the right time or place, and it wasn't the sort of thing that you wanted to raise when you were both over-tired and likely to get over-emotional about.

Even if Ryo hadn't changed his mind, it still seemed that to Dee that he couldn't be as much into it as he was. That hurt - a lot. To think that Ryo didn't love him as he loved Ryo. Nothing is worse than that feeling of unrequited love. He should know, he had felt it for long enough whilst he had worked with Ryo. Wanting so much more, but Ryo never letting him know what he was really feeling. It was only the small words and actions that Ryo had let slip that had kept Dee's hopes alive, a small flickering ember that refused to die out.

Then that night on Brooklyn Bridge, when Ryo had uttered those words that Dee had given up all expectation of ever hearing, that tiny ember had erupted into a blazing bonfire that completely engulfed his soul. That's why he had taken Ryo the way he had that night. He couldn't control that fire that raged through him, he could only quench it in Ryo, by possessing Ryo completely in every possible way, branding himself on that so long-desired body. He had been happier than he had ever thought he could be.

But now - now he was beginning to wonder. He still felt that all encompassing love he felt for Ryo, but Ryo didn't seem to feel the same burning desire to be with Dee. Dee hadn't thought that finally getting your heart's greatest desire, only to learn it wasn't returned as intensely, could hurt more than not having it at all. But it did. It hurt.

He pushed his chair back and stood up. Ryo opened his eyes at the noise. “Eh?” he questioned.

Dee walked to the door. “I'm going to get a coffee. You want one?”

“Please,” Ryo scrubbed a hand over his eyes again. “I won't stay awake otherwise.”

“Yeah, me too. Looks like it's going to be another late night.”

Ryo walked over to his desk, sitting down heavily. “I guess so,” He shuffled some papers. “I'm going to call Bikky. Just to make certain he hasn't tried going out, or something else equally stupid.”

“That brat is too much damn trouble for anyone to think of grabbing him!” Dee muttered as he walked out the door.

He waited for the water to boil, leaning heavily on the bench nearby. The entire precinct had a hushed quality to it. Not surprising with everyone so exhausted, but it still made it feel quite eerie. It just wasn't normal at all.

“So, what brings you down from your lofty heights?” a smooth voice said behind him.

He groaned to himself. The world really hated him! He turned his head slowly to glare at Commissioner Berkley Rose. For all the man was just as tired as the rest of them, he still managed to look dapper. Dee felt rumpled and scruffy beside him.

“Coffee!” he snarled out in answer to the question.

“How's your partner holding up?”

“About the same as the rest of us. Tired, fed up, and generally pissed that we can't seem to get this bastard!”

Berkley put some coffee into a mug for himself. Dee noticed it was double what he would normally have. Rose must be just as exhausted as they were.

“Is he still fussing over those kids of his?”

“Of course he is! You know Ryo! If there's not something to worry about, he'll worry about that!”

Rose chuckled quietly. “Yes, that is a bit like him. But the kids are safe?”

“Yeah, as safe as houses, Ryo makes certain of that. And for once they seem to actually be paying attention to what Ryo's said to them, and doing as they've been told. That's a miracle in itself!”

“Hmm.”

The kettle finished boiling and Dee picked it up. He held it aloft in Rose's direction, an eyebrow raised in query, then at Rose's brief nod, filled the Commissioner's mug, before turning to his and Ryo's.

“So, how're things between you two?”

“Huh?” Dee said, concentrating on pouring the water.

“You two still working fine together?”

Dee looked up at that. “Why shouldn't we be?”

Rose shrugged, “No reason. I wondered a while ago if things hadn't changed between you two.”

“Changed?”

Rose put a teaspoon of sugar in and stirred. “Yes,” he said quietly. “I thought you both might have come to an `understanding'.” He put the spoon in the sink before picking up his mug. “Obviously I was mistaken. Things seem pretty much normal again.” and he walked out.

Dee looked after him. Normal, he thought. He wasn't surprised that Rose might have picked something up initially. It would have only been from that very first day back, but Rose was pretty damn observant. So Dee wasn't surprised that he had noticed something.

What was worse though, was Rose saying he thought he'd made a mistake. That he thought things were normal between Dee and Ryo. Could that be true? Could that really be the case? Could that mean that Ryo really had changed his mind again, or his feelings really weren't in this `relationship' with Dee?

Dee put the kettle down and stirred the mugs. If that was the case, Dee didn't think he would be able to take it, not again. Not the chasing, the waiting, the hoping. He didn't think he could go through all that again.

He picked up the cups and made his way to the stairs to head back to the office. If that was the case, if Ryo had changed his mind, if Ryo really wasn't fully committed to this relationship, perhaps Dee should end it now.

There was already enough hurt.
