"He passed out." Andrew said mildly but the reprimand in his voice was easily heard. Annie's wails increased in volume as she was shuffled between her parents and finally Dee felt a child being pressed into his arms, judging by the weight Dee thought that it was the bigger one... damn if he remembered her name.
"What? Why am I holding a kid? What the Hell? Is Ryo okay?" Lyn Lifted Ryo into his arms carefully. After months of lifting Andrew from their bed to the wheel chair after Andrew first got home from the hospital, Ryo was light in comparison.
"Dee take three steps to your right. There is nothing in the way. I'm going to lay Ryo on the couch."
"Someone help me to him. I can't grasp the cane with my left hand yet... My wrist is still stiff from the break." He called out and then felt someone grab his arm.
"Wait until Lyn has him past you then we can go." Andrew sighed. "This is what Lyn was trying to tell you earlier. He needs a break. Once we get him up and about, he and Lyn are taking some time out while you and I play babysitter. Got that?"
"Do I have a choice?" Dee responded, trying his best to bounce the child in his right arm to help calm her down.
"No not really." The chuckle in Andrew's voice calmed Dee a little and soon he felt himself being walked into the living room.
"Is he okay? Please just tell me that." Alarmed and shaking slightly, Dee waited, holding his breath and silently praying.
Lyn's voice came from just a little in front of him and to his left, closer to the ground then usual. Kneeling, Dee guessed. "He's exhausted probably starving and near emotional collapse. Other then that I'm sure that he's fine."
Lyn shot Andrew a look, who was rocking Annie in his arms, his spare hand on Dee's elbow. The toddler in Dee's arms immediately placed a hand on his throat, the other on his lips again trying to participate in the adult conversation.
"I-I... I never meant for this to happen. Dammit!" Dee felt a chair directly behind him and slowly lowered himself down, holding the child in his arms. "For 2 years I pursued him... Waiting and hoping that one day I would finally get him. That he would finally tell me that he loved me. I got my wish and now I keep pushing him away." Dee blinked at the tears wetting his eyes.
"It's killing me knowing that I may never be an equal partner to him..." Dee found himself resting his head against the little girls hair, his heart aching and searching for what he was losing.
"Don't work in 'what ifs' Dee. You may be back up to normal in a few months." Andrew said softly swaying from side to side with Annie, shushing her with practiced ease. "Don't write yourself off yet."
Lyn's hands felt for Ryo's pulse counting carefully against his watch and finding it only slightly faster then he had expected. He patted Ryo's cheek gently.
"Ryo? Come on wake up Ryo." He urged before turning to Dee.
"Even if your blindness is permanent that doesn't make you any less of a man. He's doing his best to support you Dee. He will love you no matter what so you need to support him as well."
"You don't get it do you?" Dee sighed. "I don't want to go through life wondering if Ryo only told me that he loved me because I almost died. I don't want to wonder if he's only with me because he pities me!" Dee heard Ryo moan yet found himself speaking the words he had thought in his mind many times over the past few weeks.
"If this is permanent then I can't see myself staying with Ryo. I won't go through my life with those doubts. I can't." Dee felt the tears slide down his cheeks.
"D-Dee...? How can you say that? How can you doubt me like that?" Ryo opened his eyes slowly having heard Dee's confession.
"I'm sorry Ryo but that's the way it has to be." Dee's voice went cold.
Andrew exchanged another glance with Lyn, their eyes meeting and speaking volumes as Lyn muttered, in true Irish fashion. "Mary mother of the bleeding Christ child.... Most stubborn man..." He trailed off. "Come on Ryo lets get you on your feet and cleaned up then we'll head out. Let Drew beat some sense into him."
"You do mean that figuratively right?" Ryo sat up and shook the fog from his mind. Glancing over at Dee, his dark eyes showing his deep sadness. "Have I made a mistake by telling you how I felt Dee?"That was all Ryo said as he stood up with Lyn's help and went back to the bathroom to splash water onto his face and change his shirt since the baby had spit up on him. Once done, he reappeared in the living room.
"I spoke with Bikky. He knows where your meds are and so on and has agreed to a truce for tonight. Try and act like an adult for a change." Ryo's voice clearly showed his disappointment in Dee who continued to sit there not even attempting to move his head in the direction of Ryo's voice.
Andrew sighed heavily. "I will keep an eye on them Ryo. Try and relax, we'll be fine." Andrew turned and kissed Lyn softly. "I will keep the kids. Dee can help. Even he knows how to hold a kid. You and Ryo just go have fun okay." Lyn smiled at his gentle lover returning the kiss and caressing his face briefly.
"Thank you baby, you spoil me." Andrew chuckled and steered Lyn towards the door. "Come on Ryo, let's go. You need to get out." Lyn lead the way out the door and down the hall with Ryo in tow. "I'm sorry that it's been such a rough night for you Ryo. How are you feeling?"
"Tired, hungry and confused as hell... How's that for a start?" Ryo sighed. The tenderness he had witness between Lyn and Andrew was what he wanted with Dee more then anything. It didn't matter if Dee were blind or sighted. Why couldn't Dee understand that?
Lyn sighed, he understood, he and Andrew had gone through this in a fashion as well. He patted Ryo on the back. "Well I can solve the hungry part." Lyn offered, pressing the elevator call button. "The rest will have to be you and Dee... Hopefully Andrew will be able to show him the light, metaphorically."
"Dee's not a bad person..." Ryo began as they got into the elevator and headed down to the lobby. "You have only seen this side of him, but before all of this he was so different. I mean sure he jumped me every chance he got... I guess that if I didn't want that I could have slugged him but I never did. A part of me actually liked it." He blushed and looked to the floor.
"Frankly I rather like having my bones jumped... by Andrew anyway. It's too bad that you didn't have time to... I don't know... sort things out, relationship wise, before this but... well... Andrew and I 'played house' for months before we started dating. You know, cooking and what have you together, everyday kind of stuff..." Lyn watched the lights over the door light up as they descended to the lobby, shifting his shoulders, feeling almost naked with out a kid strapped to each side. "Well, if you can still love Dee despite all of this then you two were meant for each other and I will personally nominate you for sainthood."
Ryo chuckled softly and as they stepped off the elevator they were met by an older woman who grabbed Ryo's arm. "Detective MacLean! Mittens is in the alley again... Please, could you get her out? It's too dark back there."
"Calm down Mrs. Noble. I'll go get Mittens." Ryo smiled softly, keeping his voice calm. "You wait right here okay?"
"Thank you." She looked up at him and then at Lyn. "He's such a good boy. He always finds Mittens for me."
"Lyn this should only take a minute. If you want you can just wait here. Mittens is her cat who happens to like sneaking out on her." Ryo's eyes seemed to brighten. For once he was helping someone who always appreciated it.
Lyn opened his mouth to protest that Ryo shouldn't go into a dark alley alone, then laughed to himself... Ryo was a cop. He could handle a cat. "Yeah, no problem." He smiled to Mrs. Noble. "Good evening."
Ryo walked to the row of mailboxes and opened one that wasn't in use. Inside were several pouches of cat treats, kept there for just this purpose. Taking one of the pouches, he headed outside and into the alley. It didn't take too long to find the escapee and soon Ryo had the feline safely tucked against his body as he made his way back inside. He had to laugh at the way Mrs. Noble was clearly talking Lyn's ear off.
"Here you go Mrs. Noble." Ryo handed her the cat. "Now you be careful and don't let your door stay opened. In fact I want you to promise me that you will always keep it locked."
"I will and thank you." She cuddled her cat and then motioned for Ryo to bend down. When he did she lightly kissed his cheek. "I want you and your young man friend, Dee, to come to dinner sometime."
"I'll check with Dee and get back to you on that. Thank you." Ryo blushed. "Now you just remember to lock your door." Ryo reminded her as he and Lyn set off again.
Shaking his head and sighing, Ryo glanced over at Lyn. "She'll forget. I'll check on her when we get back though." Ryo laughed.
Lyn smiled. "It's kind of you to watch after her so well. I'm sure that she appreciates it." He paused once they were on the sidewalk. "Walk or drive?" He asked jangling Andrew's keys. "I got the keys." He smirked like a sixteen-year-old before slipping them into his pocket again. Frowning, he pulled out a rattle. "Man... Kids I swear they pervade every corner of your life! Nothing is worse then reaching for the lubricant and coming up with a teething ring instead." Lyn chuckled.
"I..." Ryo blushed furiously. "I've never had that experience myself actually. Let's walk. There's a restaurant right around the corner that has some of the best Japanese American cuisine around." Ryo stopped for a moment. "That's unless you would rather drive and that type of food is not your style of course."
Lyn laughed softly. "No that sounds good. I don't think that I could be married to Andrew and not like Japanese food. And I'm not a big fan of driving. Public transportation is usually more convenient so lead the way." Lyn gestured, sliding his hands into his pockets.
"Married?" That peaked Ryo's curiosity. "Gomen if I sound like I'm prying or that I sound naive but until I met Dee I always thought of myself as straight so I haven't had much personal exposure to this lifestyle yet. I'm still finding it hard to believe that Dee could change me that much." Ryo rounded the corner and pointed to a small building neatly tucked in amongst the larger ones.
Lyn's long legs kept him easily in stride with Ryo as he laughed. "Well... it's not legal of course. Vermont is the only state that recognizes same sex unions... but yeah we're married. Straight? Really?" Lyn paused briefly mid-stride then continued. "Well love knows no gender I suppose. And really...it's not a lifestyle Ryo...that implies a decision... a choice... who we love, how we feel. Its just who we are, its not choice... its not genetics... it just is." He ran a hand through his hair; sights set on the building.
"I don't know... there was just something about Dee you know? Sure it took two years for me to finally admit it all but I can't imagine my life without Dee in it now." Ryo's voice turned sad. "That's why this is all eating me up inside. I am terrified that I will lose him." They walked into the restaurant, removing their shoes and placing them in a getabako. They were then escorted to a small table where they sat down on the zabutons situated at the table.
"I can understand that." Lyn offered folding himself down onto one of the zabutons with no hesitation. "I mean things weren't always rainbows and lollipops with Andrew and I either. Don't let his quietness fool you. He's as stubborn and prideful as... well... as Dee or myself when he sets his mind to it. But if Dee really tried so hard and so long to win you over then I can't imagine he would let you slip away now."
Ryo spoke to the server in fluent Japanese, smiling and enjoying the relaxed feeling. He especially loved the fact that he could practice his native language and be understood. "I have to do something and soon Lyn. This is starting to affect my work. I got bitched at the other day because we were on a case with a hostage and as a sharp shooter I was needed but I declined due to the fact that I didn't trust myself. Thankfully another officer, a skilled marksman was able to effectively take the guy out..." Ryo's voice trailed off, his eyes lowering to the hands on the table that were shaking slightly.
Surprised to hear the word 'bitched' from Ryo, Lyn's eyebrows shot up, he reached over and placed a hand over Ryo's shaking ones. "They shouldn't have given you crap for that. You were smart enough to know that you couldn't handle it. I really don't know what to tell you Ryo. I tried talking to Dee but he wasn't listening. He's locked himself away from everything, I think." Lyn's voice was gentle and full of empathy. "It's a hard position to be in, believe me, I know. They need your love to heal but you need their love to keep functioning..."
"Kind of a 'damned if you do and damned if you don't' situation." Ryo gave off a long sigh. "I just feel like getting totally blitzed and not caring... At least for one night but I know that I can't. I have too many responsibilities." Ryo laughed slightly. "Boy that would be interesting... Imagine me helping Dee when I'm the one who can't walk straight!"
Lyn laughed and shook his head. "Sounds like a good way to break both your necks... but hey maybe next week... Andrew doesn't drink but I'm more then willing to corrupt you with Irish Whiskey." Lyn grinned.
"And I'll make sure to have plenty of potent Sake on hand!" For the first time in weeks Ryo actually felt good. "Thanks Lyn. I can't begin to tell you how much this has helped or how much your company means to me. I really do feel like I can face things again." Ryo cocked his head to the side. "Tomorrow Dee is going to be in for one hell of an eye opener." 'I hope.'
Lyn's grinned broadened. "Good, he needs it!" Lyn drew his fingers through his hair again looking down at his hands for a moment, a bit embarrassed by Ryo's frank honesty in regards to their budding friendship.
"Did I say something wrong? I sensed a bit of discomfort there?" Ryo frowned. "I guess the detective in me never stops working."
"No, no... It was very kind of you to say all that. It's not like I get out a whole lot either... and it's nice to have adult conversation that doesn't revolve around diapers and teething." Lyn smiled. "Speaking of kids... I got to admit that I'm dead curious about Bikky... he's very... unique."
"He's African American. His mother died when he was small and his father was murdered 2 years ago. In fact he was part of the first case I worked on when I started at 27th. I decided he wasn't such a bad kid and that all he needed was a little guidance." Ryo smiled as the server set the plates of food in front of them. For once he actually felt hungry.
Picking up his chopsticks Ryo looked over at Lyn. "Bikky and Dee are so much alike that they clash..."
"Hmmm... Yeah I see that." Lyn too picked up his chopsticks with a deft ease, taking a bite of the food set before him, with a smile to the server before continuing. "Although I doubt that Dee would be as impressed with my tongue ring."
"Nani? Your w-what?" Ryo's eyes lit up. "You have a tongue ring?"
Rolling his eyes with amusement Lyn swallowed his food and stuck his tongue out to once again reveal the small silver stud it held. "Yeth muh ton wing." He laughed, his tongue still stuck out.
"Well that's certainly different! Now I know why he asked me if you were staying. He seemed disappointed that it was Andrew staying behind instead." Ryo laughed. "Keep that up and I'll have to do something to win my kid back. He's quite impressed with you as it were."
"I doubt it but I wouldn't recommend tongue piercing... I was extremely drunk at the time. Besides it's only fair that Bikky is impressed with me since Kei has taken quite a shinning to you. She was very excited when I told her where we were going tonight."
"She's a beautiful child. I just wish that Dee liked kids more. I have actually thought about taking more in someday. Maybe adopting a daughter." Ryo looked down at his food and realized that he was merely pushing it around on his plate and not really eating it despite feeling hungry. "It's funny because Dee does so much for the children at the orphanage where he practically grew up in. The kids there really look up to him and he gets along with them so well. They see Dee as their big brother and I know he feels touched by that even if he tries to deny it."
"Eat that don't just push it around! You're starving! I could hear your stomach growling on the way over here." Lyn took a bite of his own food managing the chopsticks with grace. "Kids mean you have to be willing to put them first, all the times and not just when it works out for you. I think that Dee knows that. Besides kids mean an emotional attachment and from what I can tell, Dee isn't big on those either."
Ryo frowned as he forced himself to take another bite of his food. "I know that he... Oh what am I thinking? Maybe it is true. Maybe all Dee sees me as is another notch on his bedpost..." Ryo looked out the window and sighed sadly. "So how did you and Andrew meet?" Ryo asked, feeling the need to change the subject for fear of crying right then and there.
Lyn's face softened. "I'm sorry. I misspoke. I think that you're the exception to what I just said. I think that he genuinely cares about you. I'm sorry but ah... I've been around the block a few times and you don't spend years chasing just a conquest..." Lyn sighed, irritated that he had been so oblivious.
"Andrew and I met... heh... at the gym actually. It's the silliest story ever. I was bench pressing more then I should have been, especially alone. My right wrist gave out, an old childhood injury and Drew caught the bar before I managed to kill myself." Lyn blushed. "I was kind of a mess, emotionally I mean, he was the only one who noticed. We were friends for quite a while before we were lovers..." He trailed off shrugging and embarrassed.
"Dee and I started as friends... I mean he did want it to be more than that right from the get go but I had to be sure. I had to be sure that he did indeed love me before committing to anything. That's how I know that Dee can form such ties." Ryo sighed. "Sorry, I didn't mean to embarrass you. I guess in some sense you and I are quite a like." Ryo smiled, hoping to ease then tension.
"When Andrew got hurt, what did you do to keep yourself from losing it? How did you get him to fight for himself? How did you stop yourself from going completely insane?" Ryo found himself full of questions all of a sudden and could only hope that Lyn could answer them. He needed something to grasp on to... some small flicker of hope that there was indeed a light at the end of the preverbal tunnel.
"You finish that plate of food and we'll go somewhere quiet and then I'll answer all of your questions." He watched as Ryo nodded in agreement and then smiled triumphantly. The men finished their meals enjoying the small talk they conjured up and a quiet mood that was far from awkward but one that seemed to surround them in it's silent comfort.
