Coming Home (Sorta)
Chapter 2 - The Beginning
By Robster80
The chapter I wanted to do next was rather bothersome to write, mainly because I couldn't decide on several things. Therefore, I'm skipping it and getting right to the actual story of TK's journey and how it began.
Usual disclaimer: Don't own the characters, write for fun and not profit, yowza, yowza, and all that jazz.
It was just another day for TK. As usual, he ate, did his chores, and then went to the Digital World with his partner Digimon and the other newer Digi-Destined from about five years ago to patrol and battle any evil DIgimon that disturbed the peace. The group consisted of himself, Yolei, Ken, Cody, but most of all Kari and their leader Davis.
It was just like any other day, full of pain and suffering; for TK's heart to shatter all over again. As it had been for a while now, Kari and Davis were constantly close to one another. After all, they were dating. Still it hurt TK because of how it had started: that Kari had flirted with him while having no intention of becoming his girlfriend.
"Will you two PLEASE get a room," Yolei exclaimed at Davis and Kari, fed up that the two couldn't keep their hands and lips off each other. The lovebirds were leading the group back to the monitor they had used to come to the Digital World that day, victorious in giving a Blue Meramon a beat-down it would never soon forget.
"YOLEI!!"
TK mentally thanked Ken and Cody for their concern, though he couldn't be angry at Yolei for her choice of words. It wasn't her fault Kari had strung him along for years before he accidentally found out she loved Davis all along. And yet, it didn't make the heartache any less painful as he started imagining Kari and Davis alone in a bedroom.
Kari glanced back at Yolei briefly. "Oh, you're just jealous that I have a boyfriend and you're still single."
"Cheer up, Yol, I hear TK's still looking."
Veemon muttered something about giving Davis a serious Vee Head Butt for the lame joke, with Gatomon nodding in silent agreement. Unlike their partners, they had chosen to tell Patamon up front about their relationship. The news had hurt him, but they still remained close friends just the same. It was the opposite for TK, Kari, and Davis, however. TK was distancing himself, not only from them, but everyone, including his brother.
It was then Patamon stopped walking. "TK," he said, "there's something I need to check on before we leave today. Could you come with me and help?"
Not really, but I appreciate the break. "Sure. You guys go on ahead without us."
Davis just shrugged and kept moving. "Whatever. Just don't forget we're all having pizza at my place."
"Please don't tell us Jun will be there."
"Okay, Ken, I won't tell you."
Cody, who was nearest to TK at the time, looked at him and whispered, "Please don't do anything foolish," and then walked on alongside Armadillomon. The youngest Digi-Destined still considered Davis and Kari his friends, but he didn't like how they acted in front of TK. He couldn't fathom how they enjoyed increasing TK's pain, especially Kari.
Once the others were out of earshot, Patamon looked up at TK. "We need to talk, TK."
"About what?"
"You know what. You can't avoid it any longer. Seeing those two together hurts you more than you've let on-."
"And you seeing Gatomon close to Veemon doesn't hurt you because they at least had the courtesy to tell you they were dating?! You have no idea how I feel, Patamon! Absolutely no clue!"
The ice in TK's words made Patamon flinch. Still, the Digimon had expected this reaction. TK was right, though; the Digimon had gotten off easy concerning his feelings for Gatomon.
"...God, I'm sorr-."
"You don't have to apologize, old friend. I figured you were angry at me, too, because of what happened to me."
"It's not that. ...Well, maybe part of it is."
"I'm willing to listen."
Sighing heavily, TK sat down on the grass near Patamon. "I've always been afraid that I'll end up my parents. Ever since it's been just mom and me, I would hear her cry in her sleep. ...And she'd whisper, 'I don't want to be alone.'"
"You're afraid of being alone, too."
"...Yes. When I moved back to Odaiba and met Kari again... I thought she liked me more than a friend. That she'd be the one to take my fear away. I'm angry at her... but at the same time, I still love her."
"She's your first love, TK. The first is always the hardest to let go of if it doesn't last like you planned. But maybe it means she wasn't the one for you."
TK was silent for a moment before he spoke again. "You want to know what really twisted the knife in me, Pata? When I overheard Davis ask Kari why she didn't pick me, she told him… it was because of my folks. Her exact words were `it would be a doomed relationship from the start, just like his parents. Nothing good comes from a broken home.'”
With these words, Patamon at last understood why his friend felt so torn up inside. “How could she-? That was a terrible thing to say, even if it wasn't said directly to you.”
“Still, she's right. ...Maybe... Maybe I'm just not meant for love. ...Maybe I'm supposed to be alone."
Patamon chose his words very carefully. From TK's tone, he could tell his friend was possibly considering suicide. "If that were true, TK, then we'd have never met in the first place. You'd have never met anyone at all. I won't say I know how you feel, but you have to keep your hope alive that someday you'll meet a girl who loves you as much as you do her.
“And you know what? I say the hell with Davis' dinner plans. Let's go home and have dinner with your mother, even if it's just frozen dinners again."
TK thought about it for a moment, and then decided it wasn't a bad idea after all. Maybe he should stop spending time with the whole group for once. After all, summer vacation had just started and there was always a chance he'd find something else to do that would ease his pain. He pulled out his D-terminal and started typing a message. "I'll let mom know we're coming home and for her to turn on our computer so we go there rather than back at the school lab. ...Should we tell the others?"
"Nah! We can explain to Yolei and the others later. They'll understand."
After sending the email, TK got up and the two friends made their way to the nearest monitor. As they walked, TK got a reply from his mother. "She says it's on and she's waiting for us. Let's pick up the pace."
Within minutes they reached the monitor and TK pointed his D-3 at it. "Here we come, mom! Digiport-! What the-?!"
The monitor's screen turned on, a bright light shining at TK and Patamon. The Digiport never appeared, but the two felt their bodies being pulled into the screen. Before they could say or shout anything, they had vanished and the light faded.
TK and Patamon opened their eyes to stare into a green void. It wasn't the Digital World, or the real world. Nor was it the path connecting the two worlds.
You are the one, a quiet voice said out of nowhere. Long have we searched for you.
This is the Chosen One? Another voice, more stern than the other, spoke. You've got to be kidding me.
"Show yourselves," Patamon exclaimed, "And tell us where we are!"
You are between dimensions. You are safe.
"You mean we're between the real and Digital Worlds?" TK asked.
Dimensions, kid, not worlds.
Forgive my partner. We simply wished to protect you from the Dead Light.
"Dead light? What are you talking about?"
There is no time. You must begin the journey now. He and his forces are gathering power quickly.
"Who is He?!"
No time to explain. You must gather your allies and your weapons now, while he is blinded by his power and arrogance. The pieces must be gathered, and then bathed in the Divine Light of the Gods.
"You're not making any sense! What allies? What pieces?"
All will be revealed in time. For now, this is all we can do to start you on your journey.
Before TK or Patamon could say anything more, a tiny light appeared before the teen and turned into a card. He took it with his fingers and read it carefully. “Contract with Exodia… A Yu-Gi-Oh card?”
“And I thought things couldn't get any weirder,” Patamon added sarcastically.
The first piece beckons. You must go.
Don't make me right about you, kid. …Good luck.
Suddenly, a white vortex appeared before Patamon and TK, drawing them closer without any resistance.
"TK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
"PAAATAAAAMOOOOOON!!!!!"
Once they were gone, two shapes appeared within the void: one shining brightly in white, the other dark with dim blue eyes. I still disagree about him being the one, the white shape said impatiently.
Nevertheless, he is the one the Pharaoh and I agreed on. You always did underestimate the little guy.
The Pharaoh's reasons I can understand. It's yours that doesn't make sense to me.
Those reasons are my own, and you must trust my judgment.
Don't give me that! This is about your niece and her father, and you know it. You're playing a very dangerous game-.
At least my intensions are for those other than myself, and not for something petty like revenge or personal glory.
…Touche.

“I appreciate you stopping by, Mimi,” Nancy Takaishi said while she finished setting the table in her apartment.
Smiling, Mimi carried over a steaming pot of soup to set upon the table. “After what Sora told me about what Kari did, I knew the first thing I had to do when I came back to Japan was to come here,” she said. “I only wish my timing was much sooner. I wanted to talk to TK personally rather than by phone or email.”
Nancy checked her watch again. “Well, he and Patamon should be here any minute now. Personally, I'm glad they're skipping out on dinner at the Motomiyas.”
“Knowing Davis, he'd try to set his sister up with TK, and I know he'd sooner-.” Mimi stopped herself before she finished her sentence. If she hadn't she would have said that TK would have killed himself, and that comment would have been too close to the truth.
Just then, there came a bright light from TK's room. However, it only lasted for an instant. “Speaking of my boy,” Nancy said before she and Mimi both headed for TK's room.
However, when they entered the room, neither TK or Patamon were in sight. On the computer screen was the access port to the Digital World, but there was no one to be seen in the video window. Before either woman could ponder what could have happened, Mimi rushed forward and knelt down to a spot on the floor. Turning towards Nancy, she held up TK's D-Terminal.
A sudden chill ran down Nancy's spine. “We'd better call the others,” she said before rushing for the phone.

TK and Patamon never came home that night. The Digi-Destined searched the Digital World almost all the night, but found no trace of their friends. Mr. Ishida used his position at the one TV station to post information about his missing son and Nancy called the police.
Many blamed Davis and Kari for TK's disappearance, and they were alienated by the group. Even Gatomon and Veemon refused to come home with them, remaining in the Digital World to continue the search.
Matt suffered the worst of everyone. He blamed himself because he did very little to help his brother cope with the heartache. In his heart, he also knew TK was jealous of him because his had a girlfriend, Sora. Within days, he gave up on his music and went to work for Sora's mother at their flower shop.
It would be over a month before TK would come home, but he would never be the same…
