The Eighth Dragon Ball
March 30, 2003

There’s a silver chain around my neck, cheap and coarsely wrought.
I don’t know where I got it; don’t know when it was bought.
One day a friend, she told me of a miracle from Heaven.
“Out in the wilds,” said she. “In all, there’s really seven.”
She twirled a turquoise lock around her skinny wrist,
Then reached into her bag, and pulled out something in her fist.

A “Dragon Ball” she called it. I raised a brow and stared.
“So there’s a nutless dragon loose?” She turned to me and glared.
It was colored like an orange, and shined out like a light.
A little red star twinkled within, good God, it was a sight!
In my life so sad and lonely, mourning  every day,
I truly was amazed at the next thing she did say.
“If ya get ‘em all together, then the dragon comes to call.
His name is Shenron and he’ll grant you any wish at all.”

My heart, it stopped...I turned away. I couldn’t let her know.
“Cool.” I said, and walked out the door. The tears began to flow.

There’s a silver chain around my neck, cheap and coarsely wrought.
I don’t know where I got it; don’t know when it was bought.
From it hangs a little ball of orange enamel gay,
With a little red star, stuck right in the middle, like the one I saw that day.
Jeweler made, it brings no wish, but comforts just the same.
It represents the wish I make to see you once again.
