I stared at the man, and I felt tears roll down my face. This just made him laugh, and he opened the door. I backed up into the corner as he approached me. I let out a whimper as he seized my wrist, which was bandaged.
“You're coming with me, little one.” He snapped, pulling me to my feet. “Don't even try escaping. The guards don't like letting people like you free.”
I stared at him terrified. He couldn't be serious. The guards could kill me willingly, and I believed him when I saw their weapons. And there were so many of them lining the hallway.
I was led into a darkly lit room with machinery and some sort of circle on the floor. There were animals in cages along one wall. Dogs, cats, lizards, and some I had never seen before.
The man hit me on the back. “Go pick an animal, little one.” He let go of my wrist, and I headed towards a black puppy. It said “Spike” on the tag, and it was a wolf pup. We were allowed to socialize for a few minutes.
A hand fell to my shoulder, and a sharp pain in my neck was followed by a hazy feeling. A feeling that could be best compared to the numbing medicine dentists use before they drill your teeth. I still felt the ground meet my side as I fell. Then it went black.

My eye flickered open, and something felt different. The walls had a glow that faded as I stirred. My ear hurt, and when I went to rub it, it wasn't where it used to be. I had pointed black dog ears on my head. I looked down in horror to see my nails were replaced with claws, and I felt fangs in my mouth.
Tears built up in my eyes as I looked around. The man was in the corner, by other people in coats. And there was blood on the floor. I looked back at the man and his friends. They were writing on clipboards, and two were laughing.
“Another perfect half-breed! Good work, Burk!” The man said, then turned to me. “Get to your feet, little one. Come here.” Those words were strict, and it scared me. But, I did do as I was told. It was the fact that I was scared to what could happen to me next.
I ignored the talking and looked around more. The animals in the cages were against the wall, and the pup was missing. And, there was a lot of blood on the floor. That scared me the most, especially since most people could not survive that much of a blood loss. I was three and I knew that.
“Take this one to its new room.” The man in the white coat said.
And so, I was led down the corridor to a cell, which I was thrown into.
I watched through tear-filled eyes as the men walked off. I curled up on the cheap cot that was in the corner, and tried to go to sleep.
