Saving is not an Option…

A boy studies the DVD ROM in his hands as if it were an ancient treasure as he slides it carefully into his video game console and turns it on. Once starting the game, he finds himself immersed in a world of horror…

An old door slams as three people arrive in the morbid surroundings of a mansion. The door creaks eerily and loudly as it slams behind them. Once inside, creepy music seems to play for no reason whatsoever in the mansion.

"It seems we are the only ones to make it…" Wesker says coldly to his comrades Chris and Jill as they stand there appalled at what he just said.

"Wesker! What about Barry! There is a chance he is still alive! Those monstrous things that looked like dogs couldn't have done him in. Jill scolded.

"Jill's right, what makes you so sure he is dead!" Chris replied.

"Enough, this will get us no where, Chris, check out the surroundings in the next room as we investigate other areas of the mansion as well as for a way out of here, we certainly cannot go back the way we came…" Wesker coldly replied.

Chris stared at Wesker in how cold his remarks were to defy Wesker's decision for Chris to investigate alone. But his gaze on Wesker had no effect as if the order was clear and breaking it would certainly be fatal in how coldly Wesker looked at him back. Chris let out a sigh of defeat and went into the next room and annoyingly the door creaked and slammed as he opened and closed it.

"Nothing here but a fire place and old paintings…" he mumbled under his breath as he noticed an ink ribbon on the table and a typewriter nearby. "Might as well make do of the situation, I don't know what's lying down the next corner…" Chris used an ink ribbon, apparently the one ink ribbon was apparently three, go figure that logic he thought as he typed his progress. Apparently to some unknown being of sort, as once after he did, the room seemed different…

"Ok that seems to be enough for now…" the boy yawned tiredly after playing the game, as he went to bed after turning off the game console and resting for the night.

Meanwhile back in the mansion….

"What the hell happened to the music?!" Chris shouted, as the corridors seemed quieter and more frightening than before without the monotonous sounds. Chris ran out of the room back into the entry of the mansion where they all entered the mansion. "Jill!! You there?"

"Chris!!" Jill shouted running from upstairs. "What's going on? I was looking through files and such, and that music stopped and it became dead quiet around here…as well as Wesker vanished…"

"Well maybe one good thing did come out of this then…" Chris murmured under his breath.

"Anyway…we must get out of here, with or without Wesker…I just wish Barry was here…" Jill replied.

Just then a toilet flush could be heard from another room and a moan of relief could be heard.

"What was that?" Chris replied as he drew his gun along with Jill as they aimed at the location of the moan and flushing.

"Damn burrito bonanza!" Scoffed the bearded Barry as he walked out with a toilet paper trail on his boot with a shocked look on both Jill and Chris's faces.

"Barry!!" They both shouted in unison. "You're alive!!"

"Of course I am, the damned dogs couldn't get me and they stopped chasing me after the music stopped…"

"Music? You heard it too?" asked Chris

"Well of course, that music sucks, I could easily do better, does this place have a karaoke machine?" Barry asked.

"Um no not that we know of…" Jill said as sweat dropped from her face as she recounted Barry's "talents" in karaoke at the local Raccoon City Fundraiser…

"Buffalo (hic) gal won't cha come out tonight! (hic) Buffalo (hic) gal won't cha cha… (hic)" Barry warily sang on stage at the Raccoon City Fundraiser which was for the mayor.

"How did he get on stage Chris, and it isn't even karaoke night?" Jill whispered to Chris as they sat amused as Barry sang in front of everyone at the podium.

"That's a mystery, but what boggles me is where did he find the alcohol? This party is dry, not one beer just punch…" Chris replied as the drunken Barry passed out on stage in front of everyone at the fundraiser infuriating the mayor.

"The station took loads of pay cuts from Barry's action…" Chris replied with a hand on his forehead, what boggles me man is you were able to keep your job…

"Well they knew how good I was for this mission so of course they kept me." Barry boasted.

Some time before….

"You sure that guy will be part of the STARS team going to the mansion?" The mayor conversed with someone on the phone. "Great chance he will be killed? Excellent…good bye…" The mayor hangs up the phone. "Great, last time someone wrecks one of my fund raisers and lives…" The mayor said with a devilish grin.

"Anyway…" Jill interrupted. "If Barry is alive than no doubt Wesker is, we should see what he is up to…"

"You're right…but maybe we should split up so we can cover more ground…all of us walking together is going to attract some attention…" Barry said

"You're right…you and Jill check upstairs, while I check downstairs…" Chris said

"You going to be ok?" Jill asked worried.

"Yeah I'll be fine without the lame ass music this place is much easier to stand…"

"Ok…just be careful…" Jill said

"Yeah man, would suck if you died…I mean that, we are usually drink buddies anyway, that would suck if Jill had to be my new partner, everyone knows she can't hold her weight in liquor, or any for that matter, even Brad can hold more..." Barry replied

"Screw Brad I can hold more than that pansy any day!" Jill retorted angrily.

"I guess we have to see when we survive this…won't we?" Chris grinned.

"That is if we do…" Jill implied.

"Ok see ya!" Chris said

Chris gave thumbs up and ran back into the room. Came across a morbid rotting thing in the next room, apparently someone left an old pizza and never finished it such a waste, rich types suck, he thought as he continued walking downstairs. After scrounging around…

"Dammit I'm hungry! What the hell does this place have? Can't have that pizza I saw, I guess I'll try the pantry…."

Meanwhile on the second floor…

"Damn this place is filthy…" Jill says brushing a few cobwebs from a bookshelf.

"Hey…I like this reading…" Barry slips an issue of swimsuit monthly into his vest.

"Pervert…" Jill mumbles under her breath.

Back in the pantry….

"Damn this food is also spoiled!" Chris shouts as he tosses carelessly a sour milk jug full of the rancid stuff and it hits the wall with a sickening splat and adds to the very likeness of the wall. Chris observes it after hearing the noise "Damn not bad…not bad at all…"

Back upstairs…

"Hey Jill!" I found a lighter!" Barry called out

"Great, let me have it!" Jill snatched it

"Why can't I be in charge of it?" Barry asked

"Um…" Jill looked around and noticed a small liquor cabinet. "Say Barry, I'll trade you my lock pick for it and you can pick the lock to the liquor cabinet!"

Looks at it and takes the pick lock without a second thought. "Sold!" Barry easily picks the lock and begins to browse the selection of liquor greatly. "Decisions…decisions…"

(Sigh) "Why the hell didn't I go alone?" Jill said putting a hand to her forehead and shaking her head in disgust.

Back in the pantry…

"No food here…damn it!" Chris says will kicking the fridge, just then something moans on the floor. "What the hell?"

Moans again as a zombie rises. "Shit!!" Chris shouts as he fires at it with his gun. "Damn, isn't working!" He notices another milk jug, just as rancid, and chucks it at the zombie.

SPLASH! It saturates the zombie and due to the rotting flesh and such the milk completely dissolved part of the zombies flesh as it oozed disgustingly off the zombie, and in it's more grotesque state, Chris fires a shot and the skeleton shatters from the force of the bullet. "Damn…milk doesn't do a body good…" Chris pants as he rests against a counter for a bit.

Screams are heard down the hall. "Someone help me!"

"I'm coming!" Chris runs toward the screams and runs into…"Rebecca!" Chris shouts as he fires more bullets at the two zombies trying to attack her, and fall easily as blood oozes from their lifeless corpses.

"Thanks Chris!" She hugs Chris and they get out of there and run back to the entrance again.

Chris and Rebecca see a motionless Jill and Barry who are holding a book in their hands.

"What's the look guys?" Chris asked

"Read for yourself!" She tosses it to Chris.

He reads a few sections. "What the hell? A manual? For what us?"

"Yes…" Barry said ghastly.

"Apparently we are in a game…or we ARE the game…" Jill added, just as shocked as Barry was. "We found this in the file room, along with other essentials, ink ribbons, and other things, a crank…"

"That's not true…a game? Damn it Barry you been drinking again?" Chris said

"Just a bottle of Vodka…" Barry chimed in as his soberness was wearing off.

"Shit…this can't be true?" Chris said shocked

"It is look…all our data is there even Rebecca's…"

"Son of a bitch you are right! So now what do we do?"

"In theory…" Rebecca pointed out. "The reason the music stopped and everything is well, the player must not be playing right now…"

"So what you mean to say is we can't leave this place until the player comes back?" Jill said

"Exactly…" Rebecca replied

"How the hell long will that take?" Chris fumed

"No clue…whenever he or she gets here I guess…"

"This is all nuts blah blah blah…" Barry said drunkenly as he walked sideways up the stairs to the balcony and looked down at them. "This ain't no game (hic) this is real…we are stuck in this (hic) hell hole until we can get the hell ou…." Just then Barry fell off the railing and landed back first on the ground, smashing his head wide open as his blood oozed on the floor and his friends terrified.

"Barry!!!" They all cried in unison.

"Shit he's dead!"

"Barry get up!"

"I think I can't remedy that one!"

Just then Barry disappeared.

"What the hell?!" All three said in unison…as…

"That hurt like hell!" The door opened and closed to the mansion and Barry was standing there alive and well.

All three were speechless, no one could survive that and here he was, alive and well, so it was a game…life was a game…

"Ok what the hell just happened?" Chris asked but no one, not even Barry could answer so they sat there for hours. Hours more passed, they sat there until finally.

"If we have to wait for a player, then let's entertain ourselves!" Rebecca said cheerfully. Everyone stared at her wide-eyed.

"Excuse me…" Barry runs out the mansion door, as dogs are heard barking and a few screams of him as he is heard in his demise and yet again. "Damn it!" A perfectly normal Barry stands there. After running back into the mansion.

"So how was it? Did they eat you slowly or very fast?" Chris chuckled

"Shut up…" Barry replied

"That is going to get us nowhere…" Jill said, "How is it that we can not die?"

"That is very questionable, Barry already "died" twice and yet here he is, still normal." Chris added.

"It's not like that movie Groundhog Day is it? Where we have to rot here until we do something better with our lives…" Barry said.

"Hmm…." Jill said, "I don't think that's the case…"

"How so?" The others asked in unison.

"First off it isn't February 2nd, and we haven't done anything really evil…have we?"

"I dunno…" Chris remembers the first time he shot a person, of course the person wasn't even a criminal. "Heh I love that moment…hehe…"

"Ok…" Jill, says with a raised eyebrow. "So we are stuck in a game…now how do we get out if there is no player?"

"All in favor of doing something until we get a player to play again?" Rebecca abruptly and cheerfully says.

Everyone including Barry raised his or her hands.

"Ok! It's settled!" Rebecca replied happily as she got up off the ground and began to walk around the mansion. "Maybe we can find away out of here!"

"Good thinking!" Jill said smiling as she decided to look around too. "I guess the women against the men to find a way out!"

"What!" Both Barry and Chris said in unison.

"Yep!" replied Rebecca as the women headed upstairs.

"Now what?" Barry asked

"You go that way, and I will head my way." Chris said

"Ok" Barry nodded

"Great let's blaze a trail through this bastard! We don't need to wait for a player or the women!" Chris added.

"Exactly" Barry agreed

Both went separate ways, of course dying at least 6-8 times in the process…

"DAMN IT!!!" Both shouted as they both were met in the entrance once more.

"This is getting us nowhere…" Chris replied

"This sucks…" Barry added as he found more liquor to consume.

"Seems like the "men" can't even find a way out of here…" Jill giggled

"Right on Jill!" added Rebecca as both were carrying shotguns, taking out zombies on the second level of the mansion.

"Any luck?" Barry asked a bewildered Chris

"No, but I found a key to the rest of this hell hole…" Chris smiled

"Really? How do we get it?" Barry asked

"Follow me…" Chris grinned

They walk around the mansion until they go up a small flight of stairs to where a small platform rests on the floor. The key is in plain site.

"So there it is…" Barry said

"Yup…and perhaps you are the only one who can get it…" Chris smiled

"How?"

"Simple really…to get the key put an item in its place…"

"How so?"

"Well you are carrying that 40 ounce aren't you Barry?"

"Um…yeah…"

"Well hop to damn it!"

Barry walks over and testing the trap, he picks up the key and soon enough, a blade seals the entrance as Chris watches from behind the seal, or now only can hear as Barry tries to put the 40-ounce on the stand.

"Chris it ain't working…"

"Geez Barry I never meant the 40 as the object to be used to get the key, I meant you…"

"Damnit Chris I am gonna---"

Before he could finish the blades got closer and diced Barry up once more as the key dropped and ended up in a tangible retrieval location for Chris.

"I'll take that thank you Barry…" Chris turns around as Barry picks him up. "It was a jo-" Before he could finish Barry took the key and tossed Chris into the blade and laughed in delight as he heard him scream in pain.

"Well the second floor is clear, can't those two grow up?" Jill and Rebecca can hear Chris's screams in agony from across the hall.

"Apparently not…" Rebecca added

"Play cards?" Jill asked

"Play cards" Rebecca answered

The women play cards by the entrance, borrowing chairs and a table from the save room, and the cards from a discarded case. Of course a few moments later…

BOOM!!! From one side of the hall as well as a BOOM from the other side of the hall.

"What the hell are they doing?" Jill said as the mansion walls began to shake as they could hear the noise growing louder.

"It's Chris's Path!"

"Hell no Barry's Way!"

"Chris's Path"

"Barry's Way!"

"Look my side reaches past yours to a way out so it's Chris's Path!"

"Hell no, my side reaches past yours, it's Barry's Way!"

The two continued arguing as they launched more grenades back and forth between them.

"Why us…" Jill replied

"Where did they find grenade launchers?" Rebecca asked

"Who the hell knows and cares…" Jill replied

Just then as in the background their bickering couldn't get any worse, a stray grenade from each of their launchers went off and…

"BOOM!!" The table where Rebecca and Jill were playing turns to ash, along with the card players.

Both men stop and view what has happened.

"Oh…sh-" They both said as Jill and Rebecca reappeared and fired off their shotguns…

"Marco…" Is called by someone on the first floor.

"Polo…" Someone else calls from the second floor.

"Marco…" A third voice calls.

A toilet flushes again can be heard. "Damn that feels good, lame ass tacos…" called Barry after relieving himself.

"Too much info Barry…" Jill said now wishing he were dead.

"That game was interesting…" Chris said as he stopped and so did Rebecca.

"But it was your turn Chris…" Rebecca pouted

"Ugh…perhaps later…" Chris said

"Ok!" Rebecca smiled

"Say…didn't you guys make a tunnel to escape…" Jill said. Both Chris and Barry were about to argue about it. "Don't finish that thought, let's just go, just go…"

The four move on as the tunnel surprisingly is made by grenades, as in every door in the mansion was.

"Blown up?" Rebecca asked

"Yup…" Barry said

"The doors were annoying and so we rid them, seems like after getting the grenade launchers, everything fit into place… Chris said

Some time earlier…

"So this key opens this door!" Barry says as he runs ahead and takes the grenade launcher from the dead STARS member, leaning against the wall.

"Say Barry…did he happen to have two? I could really use one…" Chris replied

"Hmm…well…from past experience when we die and get "re spawned" as it were that we keep everything we have, just the items come…back…" Barry looked back at Chris.

BLAM!!! Chris blows Barry's head clean off his shoulders and there, after Barry disappears, the weapon comes back and once Barry reaches him…

"Damn it Chris! Next time you have to be the one!" Barry said aiming his magnum at Chris's head

"Fine fine…as we're even…" Chris admires the grenade launcher he now has.

"You bet…" Barry grinned

"So how did the fighting start?" Rebecca asked as they reached the elevator to the lower level laboratory.

"We decided to see who can reach the front again and whoever did could name our escape route…" Chris said

"Ugh…honestly even the names you picked were lame ass, couldn't you just call it Chris and Barry's Parkway?" Jill said annoyed

Both Barry and Chris exchanged glances. "She said our names were lame ass…" Barry and Chris says quietly to themselves, Jill hearing them and getting frustrated

The STARS members continue as they go down the elevator and end up in the laboratory.

"What was being made here?" Rebecca said

"So this is how the mayor made money…" Barry said

"Yeah he got the use of over hundreds, maybe even thousands of dead bodies and gets paid on the basis in how they are studied…" Chris says. Everyone else stares at him. "What?"

"Look!" Jill pointed out as they move deeper into the laboratory.

"Chris was right!" Rebecca shouted

"Damn now I wish I wasn't!" Chris said as he watched along with them, as they saw the massive amount of bodies on hooks, in storage bags and what not. "This place looks like a slaughter house!"

"So did the mansion…" Jill said.

"I wonder what our "player" is doing?" Barry asked.

"Wow! Phantasy Star Online!" The boy exclaimed at the store with his parent as the boy's parent bought for him and they returned home. The boy rushes to his room as he searches for his memory card.

After making it deeper in the lab, the four "heroes" make it to the deepest part of the laboratory; many huge containment cells are in it.

"This looks like something out of a movie…" Barry said

"Yeah…" Rebecca replied

"So…you finally made it…I thought I had to go up there and drag your asses here…"

"Who said that?" All four said surprised as a man from the shadows walked out. "Wesker!"

"Yes…about time you all showed up and you too have noticed the change and indeed this is a game."

"Like hell it is!" Chris replied

"How else can you explain how many times you died and are still alive? Even killing you now would be pointless to me…"

"One second…" Barry said as in a quick moment he killed Chris with his magnum. While the others and Wesker looked shocked. "Don't ask I owed him."

"I see…" Wesker said amused

"Damn it Barry!" Chris said as he entered the lab again unharmed.

"Say Chris how did you get here faster than me?" Barry asked

"Well the player had me use an ink ribbon…" Chris said

"Ink ribbon…ha you fool!" Wesker said "So saving back then, nothing here past that point even matters…"

"Such as?" Rebecca said

"It's simple really even a moron could get it…" Wesker says. Everyone glances at Barry.

"What?" Barry asks.

"Continuing, the reason you keep reappearing is that is the place where data is saved, as in a part that is already past and cannot be returned to, in a game there are of course…" Wesker said

"Yes yes we know about a game, you save you keep playing from that point should you mess up, so you are saying until a player comes back, anything we do…" Jill said

"Is for naught…" grinned Wesker.

"That maybe so, so what about you Wesker?" Chris added

"Well since we have to wait for a player, it really is pointless to do anything, our fate is in their hands…not our own…" Wesker says coldly

"Hmm seems here I need that much memory for Phantasy Star Online…" the boy said, as he was reading his game and how much his memory card had on it. "Darn I don't have enough…" Begins to look at files on the memory card. "I think I don't need this one…" He stops on a certain save file…

"Wait the music!" Rebecca said "It's back!"

"Indeed…" Wesker replied

"It seems everything will get back to normal…" Barry said

"Thank goodness…" said Jill as she wiped her brow.

"Of course we won't remember any of this…" Wesker grinned

"Yeah I guess…everything is up to the player, but when we meet Wesker, I have a feeling I will need to kick your ass!" Chris shouted

"Perhaps and I shall wait to see you then and deliver my own feeling of pain…" Wesker grinned.

"We'll see Wesker…will see…" Chris replied.

"So what happens?" Rebecca asked worriedly.

"That seems to be up to the player…so any minute everything will be…" Jill said

DELETING SAVE…SAVE DELETED…

"Cool! Phantasy Star Online!" The boy smiles as he plays his new game for the first time…

~End~
