Chapter 4: Kohai's Thoughts ? Nanaka's Phone Call
---------------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------

It was a quiet evening at the Nakatomi residence. Nanaka sat in her room, reading over her math book for the millionth time. It still didn't make sense to her. She sighed, closed the book, and tossed it rather unhappily to the floor.
"If it weren't for that stupid Magic User's Club meeting…" she said to herself, glaring to the bag which held her club uniform. "I would have had more time to study!" She sighed, again, and plopped back on the bed.
Sure, she never did like the stupid club, but she kept going for two reasons. The first, to keep Sae from complaining, and the second…
Aburatsubo.
"I bet he understands this junk." Nanaka stared at her ceiling. She had meant to ask him about the questions in her math homework, but he had to leave early. She sighed again, slipping into a daydream.
`He's good at everything,' Nanaka thought to herself. `Sports, drama… magic.' Although, something seemed to be wrong today, because nobody could do anything correctly. That wasn't right. Even Takakura, however stupid he was with most other things, could manage to do magic right. To some extent, anyway. But today, he was a complete screw up.
"Oh well," Nanaka conceded, "No use wasting brainpower on the fact that Takakura's a moron. I might as well get back to…"
The phone rang.
"I'll get it!" shouted her younger brother from downstairs. Nanaka rolled her eyes, and went to get the discarded math book, to continue her studies. The sound of footsteps pounding up the stairs made her look up.
"Nanaka! Your boyfriend is on the phone!" He little brother said, tossing the portable phone at her. Nanaka's face burned red and she caught the phone in her left hand, then pitched the math book at him with her right.
Her brother slammed the door closed in time to avoid being beamed in the head with a textbook, and scurried away. Nanaka looked down at the phone. Thank god that her brother had muted the phone, so whoever it was hadn't heard their rather incriminating argument. Who was it, anyway? She pressed the unmute button, and spoke.
"Hello, Nakatomi residence, Nanaka speaking."
"Nanaka? Hi there…" a low, calm voice spoke. It was Aburatsubo.
"Abu… Aburatsubo-sempai?" she asked quickly. She mentally kicked herself?of course it was him! What other dreamy voice sounded like that! Certainly not Takakura's, she knew that much.
"Yes, it's me…" Aburatsubo replied.
"Is something wrong?" She asked. `Great,' she thought, dreading, `probably another stupid meeting or something. Why does this stupid club always meet out of school?7 First the dumb weekend at the beach, then fighting the bell…
"No… nothing's wrong. I just…um… needed to talk to you."
Now, she knew that she was dreaming. Maybe she'd fallen alseep during her studying or something, but Aburatsubo did not "just" call her to talk.
"Errr…" Nanaka replied, a blush creeping over her face, "Okay. What's up?"
* * *
Aburatsubo thought for a moment. He had indeed managed to finally complete dialing someone's phone number. Now the trouble was what to say.
"I was just wondering what you… thought about today's meeting," He asked quickly, feigning interest. At least drama club had taught him that much.
***
Nanaka was silent on the other end of the line. She knew that she couldn't say how much she hated it?that would disappoint Aburatsubo too much. But, she replied anyway.
"It was… Okay," Nanaka began, "I guess. A little discouraging, maybe…"
***
"Yeah," Aburatsubo replied. "I thought so too." How am I supposed to bring this up? He wondered to himself. It wasn't exactly a normal conversation topic. "I mean, even Takakura-san was messing up?That's a first…"
***
Nanaka paused for a moment before replying. Did he just say Takakura-san? Nanaka thought. Was that for formality or… No. Aburatsubo only said that to teachers. Always, he called Takakura "Takeo-kun" or something affectionate like that. However, there wasn't any affection in his voice now.
Something was wrong.
***
"Hello? Nanaka, are you still there?" Aburatsubo asked. I bet she hung up on me or something…
***
"No, I'm here," Nanaka replied. She waited for a moment, and went on. "Aburastubo-sempai… Is something wrong?"
***
"Not really," Aburatsubo replied. His voice however, had given it away.
***
Something about his reply didn't strike her right. Slowly, however, the pieces fell together.
"You're calling me because you want me to help you?" Nanaka asked.
Aburatsubo was calling her for advice? She wasn't sure whether he was crazy, or maybe just desperate. Maybe it was something that Takakura wouldn't understand. Or maybe it was about…
***
"It's about Takakura."
God, what am I doing? Aburatsubo asked himself. Why am I trusting her with this?
***
"About… Takakura?" Nanaka asked. She could guess what Aburatsubo was going to say ? he wishes that Takakura would stop ogling Sae and like him. However, what she got was something completely different.
***
"Can you go and meet me in the park? Maybe it would be easier to talk about this in person," Aburatsubo said. "I was never very good at talking about stuff like this on the phone…"
"Sure," Nanaka replied, "I might be a little while though… I have to sneak out of the house, so, I'll see you there at 9:30, okay?"
"Right," Aburatsubo said. He added. "Nanaka? One other thing… Thank you."
***
Nanaka's face became a deep red upon hearing Aburatsubo's words. "You're welcome…" she replied slowly.
The phone clicked and they were disconnected. Nanaka pressed the off button on the phone and fell back on her bed. Her heart was beating very quickly. She could feel her face burning. She was very, very confused and excited and afraid all at once.
"He wants to talk to me?" She asked herself aloud. Something must really be wrong, she suspected. She quickly put changed out of her pajamas and into her school uniform. It was 9 o'clock at night and the park was relatively close to her house.
She walked down the stairs, checking the hallway to make sure no one was there. Her brother was absorbed in a television show, and her mother was no where to be seen, so she changed her shoes and slipped out the front door silently.
"They probably won't even notice that I'm gone…" She whispered to herself. Her bike was leaned against the side of the house, but she decided walking would be easier. The weather was nice, so a walk to the park would be just what she needed to sort out all the strange things that had happened that day.
