Ch 1: Reunion With the One You Love
The distance between loved ones is always relative to the job of the loved one and how important they are to you. The more important the loved one the further away their job is.
An unofficial Murphy's Law written by Amber Cecchetti
Nalia looked around her room and sighed. "I'm finally off mother. I'm sorry that I let you down. Please forgive me but I'm going to join my cousin Gene. I know you don't like him but Ma, he's all I've got now. I'll return when I've honored our name, of Sunwind," she called to the ghost of her mother. With the pack on her back (her school books) and the clothes and other personal belongings she had (Clothes + other belongings= 4 suit cases), she loaded up her car and drove of to the city where her cousin Gene Starwind, and his small family of friends lived. She popped in a disk of old music like Evanescence, Kelly Clarkson, Counting Crows and her personal favorite Rush.
A strange looking man rode on a motorcycle beside her, she only briefly noticed him as she drove. The man threw a sort of grenade at her. This Nalia saw and evaded with ease, looking beside her she saw no one. The man had vanished. Nalia in a sort of calm panic sped up. Within about two hours she pulled up in front of her cousin's shop/home. She gathered her purse and pack, and with little hesitation the rung the video phone button and looked at the small, screen.
"Starwind and Hawking Enterprises, how may we help you?" said a rather handsome red haired man. His blue eyes stared at her as if she were a stranger to him.
"Oh, Gene... You haven't forgotten your cousin little Nali' have you?" The young woman said to her 8-year-older cousin. Gene looked at her with unfamiliar eyes, so accusing
"What have you done with her!? Who the hell are you!?" The 24-year-old man spat angrily.
"Ahh, you idiot! It's me you loser, Nalia! I've come to stay with you. Mom... she's..." Nalia trailed off. Suddenly a very cat like woman popped up in the screen.
"Aisha! Get off!" Gene cried angrily.
"Oh Nalia! That's right, I forgot. Gene, your cousin Nalia called this morning and said that her mom perished and that she's coming to stay with you." said the very blonde seeming cat girl.
"Aisha! Couldn't have told me sooner! Nalia, the door's open so come on in," Gene said and hit the off button on the vid phone. The door slid open and a black haired young woman met Nalia.
"Oh I'm sorry to have kept you waiting, I'm Melfena, Gene's girlfriend." said the rather handsome young woman.
"Ohh, and when did Gene pick up such a polite young woman for a girl friend?" asked Nalia, "oh I'm Nalia, Gene's cousin." said the young woman with long dyed platinum blonde hair. No wonder Gene didn't recognize her she had dyed and grown out her hair. Not to mention she had grown quite a bit, in both height and womanliness. She wondered how Jim was, she had not seen the boy in 6 years. Jim and Gene had just returned from the Galactic Layline, and dropped by to visit. Jewel, her mother, had just poured over how handsome young Jim was, Nali was not terribly impressed though.
"How you two made it to the Galactic Layline, I'll never know but I highly doubt from my studies that you and Gene would ever have made it there." Nali remarked to the 10 year Jim. Jim glared at the young professor-like brat of a girl. She never completely irritated him but some times he'd want that 10 year old prat to just put a sock in it.
"Actually in all logical reasoning we were quite able to make it. Five crew members one of which was an ingeniously created bio-android, and another a Ctarl-Ctarl, and another a lovely assassin, add in a ship that had a built in A.I. system that grew and changed, and quite a bit of determination and you get a journey of incomprehensible danger and excitement. One that lead us to the Galactic Layline." Jim explained to the young collage professor. His young blue eyes fixed on the indifferent face of Nalia as a few strands of red hair fell in her face. Jim was startled when she smirked.
"You know if you really did go on such an adventure then show me the travel log." she mused. "Jim I'm bored can we go play or something I'm sick of being all up tight. Besides your the only friend I have, and I miss you when your not around." whispered Nalia. A sudden crash startled the two youngsters as Nalia's drunken father stumbled in. Nalia trembled as her father strode toward her in a drunken stupor. The large man began to beat Nalia hard in any place his hand could find. Jim could not just watch as his friend was beaten, he pushed the large man back and covered Nalia with his own slender body. Nalia wept silently under Jim's thin form. The man repositioned him self and began to beat Jim as well. The first strike made Jim cry out, and the second blow hit giving Jim no time to recover from the first. Gene suddenly tore in to the room and slammed the enraged man to the floor sticking the end of his blaster at the man's head. The man suddenly changed for fearsome to fearful. Nalia's mother walked in and saw the whole scene, it was she who called the police but she always blamed Gene for her husband's violence. Nalia's father died in an attempt to make a jail break, only one day before his release.
Nalia wondered how much had he changed. Was he still so kind and idealistic? Or maybe he had grown into a fighter like Gene, or perhaps he still was a bit of a geek, a wiz kid know-it-all smarter than herself? She knew he might not recognize her, that she was now a young woman, not a child. Even as these turmoil thoughts bounced around she straightened her skirt and blouse hoping, longing to see the boy who had protected her as a young man. Blushing she realized that she might not recognize him, was he gorgeous or ugly or perhaps as plain as she had always thought him? Was she in love? No, she couldn't be he was... All thoughts ceased within her mind as the handsome young blonde pulled her into a tight embrace.
She hugged back and found herself thinking thoughts that were unbecoming of a young lady.
"Nalia, I've missed you so much. I'm sorry about you're mom." said the very gorgeous Jim. "It's been so long Nali' I almost didn't recognize you. But there's this way that when you get a blank look for a moment you seem so cold and lifeless, kind of like when you used to say that the Galactic Layline was a myth."
"I'm sorry Jim. I know that I've been a real bitch to you at times. I was just trying to make myself feel strong and important, when dad used to... when he used to beat me." Jim pulled her into a tighter embraced. A moment later they were staring at each other locked in a romantic gaze, Jim was moving closer... so much dangerously closer.
"Hi!" screamed the cat like woman Aisha Clan-Clan, the Ctarl-Ctarl.
"AHHHHH!" the two blonde 16-year-olds screamed falling away from each other's arms. Jim and Nalia looked at the oblivious woman incredulously.
"Aisha! Geez... oh well. Hey Nali'. " called Gene, from across the room, he wore his favorite style, ok well second favorite because Melfena never allowed him to sit around in his boxers in front of new house mates. He wore the same style of outfit he wore 6 years ago. He had not changed a bit, the same orange-red hair, the same black sleeveless top and black jeans the same type of belt and blaster although upgraded, and the exact same cloak which was beginning to show signs of wear and tear.
"So Nalia-chan," said the cat woman Aisha, " welcome to our home. Of course you'll have to work to earn your keep around here."
"Aisha! She's my family and I'm the one who decides whether she pays rent or not, and I say not." Gene said from right next to Aisha startling her half to death. "Hey Nali'. Do you want to meet Suzuka?" Gene asked remembering her fascination with assassins and samurai like people.
"Oh, yes please Gene. I'd very much like to meet Suzuka-san." she chirped about as happy as a lark. Gene led he over to where Suzuka sat. She seemed such a plain woman. But the killer presence was thick around her. "How do you do, Suzuka-san I'm Nalia, Gene's cousin." she said politely bowing to Suzuka. Suzuka herself stood up and bowed to the girl.
"I am Twilight Suzuka. The assassin for hire." No sooner had Suzuka said this than a loud croak stunned the room. Nalia turned to see the huge green frog-man creature behind her. Jim moved first recovering instantly, he took the wrench on the nearby table and chucked it at the monster's head. It was infuriated by this violent assault. Suddenly a loud boom sounded as a hand-grenade had exploded in the room. Smoke filled the air, Jim who was nearest Nalia grabbed her and shielded her from the beast as an unearthly screech pierced the air. The smoke dissipated to reveal a young man standing over the dismembered body of the foul thing.
"Sladie, get bitten scratched or breathed on funny one and in a week you'll have a baby sladie ripping from your belly." said the black-hair boy with a charming face. He walked over to the absolutely terrified Nalia. Jim moved between her and the young man. The young man merely chuckled at Jim's protectiveness. "I won't harm her... She is the reincarnation of the sladie's most hated enemy, Lady Asha. I, Jeir Lysen, swear that I shall defend her with my life in order to destroy the sladie. My Lady if you take this quest you could rid the Universe of the sladie. First we would travel to the Galactic Layline and take the horodric stone. Then to the star Polaris, to cast the stone in. Finally we would go to the Galactic Layline once more where you would read an ancient script destroying every last sladie and restoring all of the people who died because of the sladie." he said bowing before his new mistress. She recoiled from him and hid in Jim's arms.
"Take a hint! She doesn't want you here!" Jim told Jeir. "Don't worry Nalia, I'll go where ever you do, ok?" he said turning to her. Nalia turned her face to the boy.
"Give me sometime, ok?" she asked, he nodded in response. Jim walked her to the room they were going to share.
"Sorry, not enough room for everyone to have a room. Nalia? Are you ok?" Jim asked his young love. He wanted to kiss her so badly. To just smother her in his love. She was quiet. He sat by her side and squeezed her hand. She was now looking at him tearfully with the same look she had when her father had beaten her and Jim had saved her. He brought her face close, then hesitantly kissed her. Nalia's eyes widened as he did so. But she didn't resist… instead she sought to deepen the kiss. The two lay on the bed making-out until they fell asleep in the other's arms. "I'll follow you where ever you may go, Nalia."
