Of a Dream, a Haven and Training

A Dream

Jewell sighed as the three Divine people walked.

"It's around her somewhere," she said, looking around.

"Where do you say we were going again?" whined Vash, shoulders slumped and his pack barely still on his shoulder.

"I didn't say," she replied. "We're headed to Sparta the Divine Haven of Gunsmoke."

The chibi, that walked between them, wailed.

"We're going to the Hidden City?!"

"Hidden..City?" Vash raised a brow in question, looking at Jewell.

"Yeah. Only the Divine that are in the Trade of Herbs and Goods know of it."

"How long has it been here?" the gunman inquired.

"Ehh..." the swordsman thought for a moment, then stratched her head. "Ten...No, 13 years older than me. Thats old."

Quartz nodded, and both smiled when Vash whistled.

"See, it became the 'Hidden City' when the SEEDS ships landed. I was dispatched to check what stopped the THG-the trade. When I saw that they were the ships giving off a strange distrubance I found you and Kni-" she was cut of abruptly by a sharp pain in her back; she had been walking backwards as she told Vash of the city.

Now, she fell forward onto her hands and knees. A wave of bright silver rippled away from where she touched the field of energy, and, for a moment, a vast city appeared then faded.

Awe made Vash freeze, staring at where the silver rippled away then disappeared like a pattern on water.

Jewell's body limply leaning against his legs pulled his attention back to her; the chibi kitsune was no where to be seen.

Vash turned Jewell onto her back in his arms.

"Jewell?" He gave her a light shake; she didn't respond. The gunman's face grew tight with worry and gave her a slightly harder shake. "Wake up, Jewell. Come on....I know it would take more than..that to kill you...."

Tears welled up in his eyes when he put his ear close to her lips; she wasn't breathing.

As a tear slid down his cheek he pressed the two bare fingers of his oddly gloved hand to the side of his friend's neck.

He couldn't feel a heart beat. Vash held her paling form in his arms trying to fight the tears that wanted to fall.

But after a moment, when it fully registered in his mind that she really was dead, he let them fall. Pulling her body closer, he buried his face in the crook of her neck began to sob quietly.

Vash hadn't known her long but he knew her enough to that he knew one thing now: he lost another person dear to him.

Silver fire bloomed around them, making no sound and silencing all sounds. Vash's quiet sobs were also silenced.

The silver flames grew higher and formed into long finger like shapes. Wrapping around the two figures the ground disappeared.

Vash sat alone in a swirl of silver and black. He no longer felt sad for his loss, now he felt how he did when he would sit alone and think for a long time, everything else forgotten.

Four images formed from the two swirling colors before him, then a fifth below the others.

The first, he knew, was Rem smiling.

The second, he knew also, was Jewell when she was wearing that tyedye 'PEACE' shirt.

The thrid, he thought he knew was Jewell but looking more closely he saw varying differences.

He looked at the fourth and raised a brow: it was him, standing with his pack slung over one shoulder, his right hand out stretched.

--Love & Peace-- he heard and smiled.

But his smile faded the moment he looked at the fifth image.

It was the scene that had just taken place.

When Jewell in the image fell to her knees, Vash's heart clenched painfully and he sobbed aloud.

The silver of the light around him vanished and everything was black.

Vash closed his eyes, seeming to be asleep now, but he felt someone's hands on his shoulders and relexively gripped that person's elbows.

His sea blue eyes opened to the worried copper eyes of Jewell.

The gunman leaned up and kissed Jewell as if she'd been gone for years and missed her greatly.

She didn't pull away but she was very confused.

She'd woken up with Vash's arms around her tightly, and he'd been sobbing in his sleep.

The swordsman pulled him into a sitting position. He kissed her again then pulled away and said tearfully, "That dream felt so real..."

"It's all right, Vash. It's okay," she whispered back comfortingly and hugged him, rubbing his back.

He clutched her waist almost like a scard child, crying into Jewell's shirt.

There, they sat a while, Jewell rocking Vash in her arms until he calmed and released the very tight grip he'd had around her waist.

He let out another guttural sob, and buried his face deeper into her shirt.

It hurt Jewell to hear his sad sobs but she stuck through it to comfort him. She stroked his hair and whispered, "I've...I've never seen you so upset before. What did the dream show you..?"

Vash winced, recalling the dream, "There was some metal object... and... it struck you...and...and you died..."

Jewell tryed to recall something metal. Could it have been the shield of Sparta? But it's not metal.

She looked down at his blonde hair. "What scared you so much though? I'm just another of thousands of warriors from my world."

He shook his head, "I... don't want to say..."

"Please tell me. It's not like I'd hate you," she whispered, smiling. She knew she was lying about being one of a thousand but he didn't, she hated being one of very few.

Vash let out a ragged sighed, "Well... I don't know if I could live without you..."

Jewell's left eyebrow shot up as soon as she heard that. "Really..? Why....is that, I mean I'm only a trouble maker and I get followed by my enimies, you be in danger always with me."

"I just want to be with you...You're not like the people who know who I am. What I am."

"You are a person of many talents. If you were to find the right people you would be a very favored person. Theres not many in the world that have a personality like yours."

Vash had a quizzical look on his face, "What?"

"If you find people who understand you you will be a favored person." She paused in thought, looking at him.

Vash nodded slowly.

"I know where you would find those people....but..."

She paused again, trying to think.

He looked quizically at her, "Where might that be?"

She looked at him. "We could go to the Hidden City. We could get that illusion charm for you sunglasses, I could get ol' Jack to find you're...." she trailed off whispering incoherent things.

He stared at her, "Something wrong?"

"Heheh. Nope." She raised her brows smiling. "But I must ask you something."

"Yes?"

"An-and be honest. You've seen your power before, haven't you?" she asked him, hoping he would tell her the truth. Vash looked at his right arm sadly, "Yes..."

"I knew it," she whispered. "I knew but I wanted to ask first. Jack and the others of the Divine school, including me, can help you control it's power."

She sorted through toughts in her head. "I want to check something."

He nodded, "Okay."

She tapped his forehead. "May I?"

Vash sat up and tilted his head inquisitively, "Do what?"

Jewell bit her lower lips to keep from laughing as she said, "I want to measure your power, but to do so I need to look into your mind. It's impolite not to ask first."

He shrugged, "Fine with me."

She nodded and put her hands on his shoulders. Silver copper light sparked against the wild black and green energy that was tangled in magic knots.

She prodded one of the knots and was shoved out of his mind by a deep voice that said, "Leave my brother's power alone!"

"Yah! Ouch!" She rubbed her hands. "Your-your brother is mean."

"Opps," she whispered and covered her mouth. "I didn't mean that..."

He grimmly nodded.

"I'm sorry about that, I lost my temper." She raised her brows, "Your brother's power is tangled with your's. He's not letting you control it."

Vash looked at the ground, "So that means I can't control it... That more people will die?"

The swordsman shook her head. "No, what that means is that you, with my help, have to untangle you plant energy. If not for being off guard he wouldn't have pushed me from your mind."

He nodded, "That's a relief."

"Yes it is and no it isn't. We'll have to weed out Knives' energy from yours. One wrong move and either one or both of you could lose your power or die. But," she smirked. "That's not a very common thing to happen. I've never let anyone die."

The gunsman smiled nervously, "Is that so?"

She rubbed the side of her nose. "Yeah. And the other masters of the school will be helping me."

He tilted his head slightly, "Other masters?"

Jewell nodded, "Jack Katt, Akidie Crossen, Willow Fame, and Chiek Ma- uh...Shine. They, along with me at certain times of the year, teach at the school."

Vash nodded, "I see, are they good teachers?"

"Hmhmm. Akidie Crossen founded the school. He's the oldest and most powerful of the teachers. Willow Fame is his wife, she's the second master of the school," she paused, scratching the back of her neck in thought.

"Chiek Shine joined the school as a master.....thirty years ago. And that little Idget of a Sprite Jack Katt's about a new as they come."

Vash chuckled, "Sounds like a fun crew, love to meet 'em."

"Yeah, you'll like them. Just be careful of Jack."

Jewell stood and stretched, getting a number of pops from various places on her body.

He contemplated what she said, "Why should I steer clear of him?"

"Eh.." she shrugged. "Just don't let him get behind you. He'll strip you of your clothes with a snap of his fingers, given the chance.

"He just likes to embarrass new people."

Vash shuddered at the thought, "And he hasn't been kicked out yet?"

"They can't kick him out. He's a level four rank Divine. No Divine over level four can be forced to do anything."

"Oh... I could change that," He said with a smirk.

At the point Jewell was covering the Flare-powder they'd used that night with sand, she stopped and blinked at him. "How?"

Vash laughed, "A little bit of brute force can do anything."

The swordsman laughed at the naive thought. "An unmarked Divine can get banned from the school doing that, then I wouldn't be able to help you.

"I could use brute force if I wanted but Jack's a good teacher more or less."

He raised a brow, "Unmarked?"

"Your rank. You don't have a rank level yet. I'm not the one to give it to you; Akidie is."

The gunman nodded, "I see. What rank are you?"

"Three." Jewell picked up her coat and put it on. She stepped over to him. "It's best that we go now. We'll make it to Sparta before dark if we set a good pace."

"Let's hurry then," he said, nodding once.

Jewell picked up Titan then raises her brows.

"Hmmh," she shook her head and smirked. She strapped the blade to her back then offered her hand to Vash.

"For Love-?"

Vash smiled and grabbed her hand, "And peace."

Jewell pulled him to his feet and gave him his pack.

She picked up her's and smiled. "And the only thing that can make this day worse is....do you know?" she asked.

He shook his head, "No."

"Heh. Sandworms."

Vash's eyes grew wide and he nervously shrinked back.

"You didn't bring bullets, did you?" she asked, raising her brows.

Vash sweatdropped, "No..."

"It's okay, trust me." She pulled Theory from it's hiding spot.

"Remember what I told you about Theory?"

Vash nodded, "You said, `The blade can cut its master wuthout giving pain, but will not cut those who are pure.'"

"Thats right." Jewell squeezed to hilt, copper fire sparked and the small blade grew into a longsword.

"Here," she offered it to him.

Vash took the sword and looked at it, "I'm not skilled with swords."

"I know you, told me. Is it light?"

Vash nodded, "Very light."

"Thought so." She stepped up to him and held his arm out level with her eyes. "I can't believe your so much more taller than me."

Jewell tapped a symbol on a part of the exposed hilt.

The sword faltered in his hand as it became heavier, but then he adjusted to the weight and made a few swings, "Much better, thank you."

She nodded. "It's heavy enough to match your strength. You may not me good with swords but Theory isn't your natural, everyday sword."

She turned and began to walk. "Now. We just need to get to the city and we'll be as save as if there were nothin in the world to hurt us."

Vash followed her.

A Haven

An hour before the suns were to set, Jewell and Vash walk. Both gritty as if they'd been fighting, and both sported scratches on various places.

The gunsman let out a groan, "How much farther?"

Jewell sighed as they walked.

"It's around her somewhere," she said, looking around.

"Where do you say we were going again?" whined Vash, shoulders slumped and his pack barely still on his shoulder.

"We're headed to the Hidden City, Sparta the Divine Haven of Gunsmoke," she replied.

"Can you tell me a bit more about it?" Vash raised a brow in question, looking at Jewell.

"Yeah. Only the Divine that are in the Trade of Herbs and Goods know of it."

"How long has it been here?" the gunman inquired.

"Ehh..." the swordsman thought for a moment, then stratched her head. "Ten...No, 13 years older than me. Thats old."

Jewell nodded and smiled when Vash whistled.

Jewell's body limply leaning against his legs pulled his attention back to her; Vash's dream flashes before his eyes and he kneels beside the swordsman, "Jewell? Wake up!"

He untied the strap that held Titan on her back and turned Jewell onto her back in his arms, the sword forgotten on the ground.

Vash teared up and traced a finger across her cheek, "No... don't be die again... no!"

Brown-black fire sparked, a short figure appeared in front of him. A person wearing baggy clothes stood there, his back to Vash, he looked around.

"I could have sworn someone touched the field."

Vash stood up, "Who are you and what have you done to Jewell?"

The short character spun around, a brown black ball in his left hand, raised. "Who did what to Jewell?!"

The gunman pointed to Jewell. "What did you do to her?!"

He looked at her. "Oh Gods. She touched the field."

He knelt and touched her forehead, his fingers outlined with black energy.

Vash stared at him, "What are you doing now?"

"I'm returning her power."

"How?"

"Because I'm the one her energy went to just now. The-" he looked at Vash. "You....who are you?"

"I'm one of her friends, you?"

"Jack Katt's my name." He stood and looked at him. "She'll be fine." Jack poked Vash in the chest. "What is your name?"

"Vash. I've heard of you from her."

"Really now? I bet none of it was good with the way I like to act. That reminds me...."

His eyes narrowed as he smirked. "Your new aren't you?"

The gunman remembered what Jewell said about how he treats newcomers, "No..."

"I've never seen you before." He raised his hand as if he were about to snap his fingers when another hand shot up and grabbed it.

Jewell sneezes. "You aren't going to do that to my student, now are you?"

Vash looked at Jewell, "You okay?"

Jewell sneezed again and stood up. "Yeah."

"Damn. Jewell, why'd you have to ruin me fun?"

"I always ruin your fun," she sneezed again. "I'm not going to let you pulled that trick with my student, got that?"

Vash seemed confused, "Where's this 'Hidden City'?"

"Inside the field, Vash," she said, dusting off her clothes.

"He's an idiot, isn't he," it was more like a comment than a question.

The gunsman gave an angry glance at the Divine and scoffed.

"Jack?" she asked sweetly.

"Yes?"

Jewell punched the short Sprite in the chest. He fell back onto his butt, coughing.

"As you said," she turned to Vash. "Brute force."

Vash smirked, "Brute force."

She picked up Titan and strapped it to her back then slung her pack over her shoulder and grabbed the Sprite by his pants and tucked him under her arm.

"You about as rude as ever, Idget."

She walked toward the field and kicked it where it should be. Silver copper power surged and a large hole opened, revealing the city surrounded by a forest of trees.

Vash marveled at the technological advancements and walked in, "Let me guess, lost technology?"

"Partly. Also over almost three hundred years of Divine energy keeping the greenery alive."

She took a deep breath. "We planned to spread it and intoduce the humans, little by little to us. But its hard."

Vash nodded and continued to walk further into the city.

The curious look on Vash's face reminded her of when he was little. She let Vash walked ahead and she stopped and set Jack on the ground.

"Look. I want Vash to feel comfortable while here. You have no idea what he's been through with his brother," she talked quietly.

"I brought im here so that we can help him."

"I understand, Jewell. Why don't you go to the stream and relax a while with him. I'll go talk to Akidie and see what we can do."

"Thank you," she said as he walked off to do what he needed.

Vash marveled at the buildings and felt insignificant by their height, "Wow..."

Jewell chuckled, standing behind him hse wrapped her arms around his shoulders and rested her head on one shoulder. "I remember what I saw in your memories of Rem," she whispered to him. "I promise to help you make the planet what she wanted it to be."

Vash smiled and set one of his hands on hers, "Thank you."

"I want to show you the stream that has a number of my favorite flowers."

He nodded, "Let's go see it."

Jewell led him to a broad stream where a number of various flowers grew beside the water. "I love to come and sit here when I want to think or swim."

Vash looked at the flowers, and at the pure water, "It's beautiful..."

"Yeah. And when we are able to get the people of Little Jersey, Kasted City and New Oregon to understand what we're trying to do we can get the rest of the cities and towns to be apart of it."

The swordsman sat down and pulled off her boots and socks then rolled up her pant legs abit and stuck her feet in the water. "Ah, that feels nice."

He sat beside her and looked at the water, a serene feeling creeping into him.

"Do you know how to swim?"

And Training

Jewell walked out into the practice arena, Vash and Jack in tow.

"Now. Jack," she turned to him, "No funny buisness, understood?"

Jack glared at her but nodded. "Understood."

Now she turned to Vash. "Okay. Are you ready?"

Vash looked at the ground, "I guess so..."

Jack opened his mouth to comment but Jewell motioned for him to keep quiet.

"Vash. I am sure when I say this: out here, even if you fire, it wont hurt anyone or destory anything, thats why we're here."

"But... What if my power is more than your arena has seen? What if it does hurt someone?"

Jack stepped in, "I rebuilt this arena myself. It's bigger, stronger, and the shield has more power in it than it should. It won't reach the city."

The swordsman had to agree, "He's right. And I won't let your energy get that far."

Vash sighed, "Okay, I hope so then..."

Jewell bit her lower lip, not convinced. The hair on the back of her neck was prickling. "Let's get to it then."

Vash looked at his gun in his hand, sweat rolled down his cheek, "I can't do it... Please don't... make me..."

"You have to for us to help. I can help you. You can't lose control with me and Jack here-" Jack nodded "-I'm not your brother, I won't force you to hurt someone."

Vash sighed as the chamber of the gun slid back, revealing a glowing cylinder. "Here I go..."

Jewell nodded, fighting the fear that always rose in the pit of her stomach when she did this. Jack walked to Vash's other side and waited.

"You can do this," she whispered.

He sighed, letting the gun fuse with his arm and in minutes it was a cannon, blue light coming from around him.

Jewell nodded to Jack, who nodded back. She stepped forward. "Vash. It's beautiful. You have no idea how rare this is," she said, carefully touching the pattern of the cannon.

Silver sparked against the blue of the raw power writhing in the cage of energy.

Vash shouted, "Step back! I can't keep it from shooting!"

"Jack," she said. He nodded and stepped forward.

"Steady Vash. Hold it."

Jewell stepped back and clapped her hands the sound echoing.

She shouted something that Vash couldn't understand.

The blue energy instantly flashed mint green, the power shrinking slightly. "Now, Vash. It's in your control completely, change it back."

Vash returned his arm to normal, and sighed, "So it is under my control?"

The swordsman closed her eyes and said, "Not completely. At that moment yes, but not permanently. That's what we'll be working on."

Jack nodded. "Good work, Vash."

"Oh..."

Jewell face twisted into what looked like disdain and hatred. "Bite me, damn you," she whispered to someone, not Jack or Vash.

"Is something wrong, Jewell?"

"Yeah something's wrong. Knives has someone working with him. They're plannin' something."

Vash stepped away. "I knew... this would happen... beacause of me..." he said as he ran off.

"Vash," she sighed. "Vash, if you don't stop I'll stop you," she shouted after him.

Vash kept running, "It's my fault!"

Jewell gritted her teeth, her temper trying to get the best of her. "Fine."

"What are you going to do?" asked Jack, who had watched silently.

"What do I always do?"

He chuckled when Jewell disappeared.

She appeared a few feet in front of Vash and caught him by the shoulders. "Vash, stop it."

Vash struggled, practically knocking her down. Jewell barely kept her footing and her grip on his shoulders at once. "Calm down," she said firmly, giving him a hard shake.

"You're letting him get the best of you. If you want to prove him wrong you're going to have to stop running from him."

Vash shook his head, "I cant put you in danger!"

She resisted the urge to slap him as she said, "Did you not see what I just did with your Angel Arm? I can pretect myself from more than what you're brother could do."

"You don't know him..."

"So you're saying that a warrior, almost 155 years older than you or him, can't fight? You want me to stay out of it so you can die?"

Vash looked at the ground, "I just don't know..."

"Then let me help. Remember what I promised you? You'd go through more than you could handle without me. But together, you'll get through this and save Knives from this fate. I promised to help you, for Rem."

Vash nodded, "Thank you..."

"That's better," she smiled and hugged him. "I couldn't live with myself if I let you go alone."

He returned her hug, "I can't live if I'm alone."

"No one can," she chuckled.

Jack walked up beside them. "How about we take a look at your Angel Arm again then take the rest of the day to relax more?"

Jewell looked at Vash, "It's up to you, Vash?"

The gunman looked confused, "Me?"

Jewell chuckled again and nodded.

"Alright," he said, sounding abit unsure.

"Don't worry. We won't Knives move forwardwith whatever he's planning," she told him carelessly then slung her arm around his shoulders as they began to walk back out to the middle of the arena.

~--*--~

That night, Jewell sat in her appartment's big armchair upside down, her hair sprawled out on the ground, looking at Vash. He sat on the bed in his brown jumpsuit which he refused to change out of.

"I at least want you to take a shower," she commented, smiling as if she were trying not to laugh at his attempt to make his sandblow hair stand on end again.

"As much as a nice shower sound, I don't want to. Thank you anyway," he said stubbornly.

"Oh come on!" The swordsman rolled out of the chair and onto her knees on the floor in front of the bed. She folded her arms on the bed and laid her head on them.

"You need a good shower!" she said after not getting a reply. She poked him in the side and asked, "What are you hiding?"

"I'm not hiding anything."

"Then take a shower!"

"No!"

"Why?!" she demanded, she was getting tired of this.

Vash stopped messing with his hair and looked at her. He blushed slightly and whispered, "Because....I just don't want to."

Jewell tilted her head.

He seemed indignant about the shower demand, and thought up a quick excuse. "Because you might peek...?"

She sighed, raising a brow skeptically. "I'm not eager to peek at my student while he takes a shower."

"Uhh... because... err..."

Jewell grabbed his hands when he reached to mess with his hair again. "That's getting annoying. Take a shower and you can spike it better."

"I have nothing to change into."

"I can change that, no pun intented," she said and stood up. "If you have something to change into will you take a shower?"

"I'm not wearing one of your dresses."

She took a deep breath, anger rising; then she laughed. "I don't wear dresses often. Trust me, you can wear something of mine for one night at least."

"I still... don't want to..."

"Damnit Vash. Why the Hell not?" she demanded putting hands on hips and glaring at him.

"I don't want to say..."

Jewell rolled her eyes and sighed. "I really don't want to say this but....As your teacher and trainer I am ordering you to take a shower. If you're so scared of me then I'll head down stairs and wait until your done. How about that?"

"Uhmm... that's fine."

Thank you. Now he'll stop messing with his hair. She walked to a chest of drawers and pulled open the bottem most drawer. After shuffling through clothes she pulled out black and white cloth.

Jewell chuckled and placed them on the bed before Vash.

"Black and white PJ's for the dull boy in red," she said in a deep, teasing voice ans smiled.

Vash stood, taking the clothes with him, and walked into the bathroom then squeaked, "Go away!" and closed the door.

"Alright, alright. I'm going." Jewell opened the appartment door then said, "Come down and get me when you're done"

The door closed behind her and she walked down the hall thinking, what would I find if i did peek on him.

The though made her blush and giggle.

Vash took his clothes off and hopped in the shower, turning the water on. "Ahhhhg! It's cold!"

*~~~*

Jewell smiled at the moons when she walked out into the warm air.

"It's strange to have met someone like him. Someone I like," she whispered, locking her hands behind her back.
