Chapter 7

Goodbye

Vash sat in Jewell's armchair looking at her, she sat, propped up on pillows, on the bed. Her left arm was in a sling resting against her stomach. The swordsman's head rested on the wall her face still pale and sweaty.

The loose cotton button-up shirt she wore revealed the few scars on her collarbones and visible left shoulder.

The silence that stretched between them made Jewell's ears ring, she could still hear the whistle of the arrow that nearly peirced her heart not but four days ago. She opened one eye to look at Vash.

"What's wrong?" she asked with a strained whisper.

"Hmm?" His eyes focus from their distant look. "Oh. I'm just thinking is all."

"Thinking of what?" With her good hand she motioned for him to sit with her.

He slid from the chair and onto the bed to crawl to her side. He smirked slightly and repositioned the pillows behind Jewell to wrap an arm around her and rest his hand on her good shoulder.

He pressed his cheek to her's and whispered, "Thinking how glad I really am that you're going to be okay."

She sighed and closed her eyes again taking the chance to let the weight of her head rest against his.

"What's wrong?"

"I'm still slightly numb from the poison, at this point anything can happen."

"Don't say that," he whispered protectively.

"It's the truth, Vash, and you know it."

"I know it but I don't want to believe it."

"I understand."

There was silence, Vash was too quiet now. "Vash?" she reached up and squeezed his hand, no answer. Jewell opened her eyes and looked at him, he seemed to be asleep.

The room grew dark and cold, there appeared a figure; a single golden eye gazed at her the other covered by blue hair.

"You're.."

"Yes, your failed student, Legato. You seem suprised that I come here at this time," he smirked. "You see, I know about the visit from your Goddess and came to give you a message from my Master."

"Your...Master," Jewell whispered. "Knives."

"Correct,"he said slowly, "My Master says if you tell anyone of his plan that he will make sure you die a slow death. If you make Vash fall in love with you anymore than he is the Master will take him away from you forever."

"Why is he telling you to say this?"

"Because he doesn't want his brother falling for a bitch who loves humans," Legato chuckled, "Just like her."

Jewell scowled with hatred, "I'd much rather die and destory Knives than let him kill the humans."

"Master says since that is your decision the first word you say of His plan will be your last in the Mortal Realm."

She gasped slightly as a ghostly hand reached forward, Legato leaned down to look her in the eye more closely. The swordsman couldn't move at all as Legato's ice cold hand clutched her chin tightly.

"What-" she tried to say but she stopped.

I'm not your failed student anymore, he said in her mind. His grip moved down around her throat, his orange magic tighened around her neck. There was a flash of light and everything was normal again.

She didn't realize that she was holding her breath until Vash gave her a slight shake.

Jewell coughed then looked at him. "I'm sorry," she breathed. Tears ran down her cheeks to fall from her chin.

"I'm sorry," she sobbed quietly and shook her head. Vash, wide eyed and unknowing of what just happened, carefully wrapped his arms around her so not to hurt her shoulder.

Jewell cried until she drifted off to an unpleasant sleep. To everyone that knew Jewell it was hard to recall ever seeing her cry. Vash had carried her to Leah while she was still asleep.

"I don't understand what it could mean. And you said she just looked at you and started whispering `I'm sorry' over and over while crying?" she asked, looking at the saddened expression on his face.

He nodded. "I remember nodding off to sleep for a moment but when I woke she was staring at the wall."

"Strange." Leah sighed, "I want you two to stay here for tonight then."

The gunman nodded again. "Thank you."

The next morning, jewell woke and looked at Vash. More silent tears fell as she forces herself into a sitting position and leaned against the wall.

She gasped, wide eyes fell upon two transparent figures became fully visible.

"Kn-Knives."

He chuckled, "So you do remember me."

"O-of course I do," she stuttered and scolwed. "You were his God-forsaken evil brother!"

"You skimming that thin line of death, watch yourself or I will kill you right now," he warned, voice cold and low.

The white rage that Jewell only felt a few times in her life flared as it dismissed her pain and she leapt from the bed to pin Knives to the wall by his throat.

Legato raised a hand to her. "Don't even try," she hissed at him, never looking from Knives' calm face. She pressed Theory to Legato's chest and he stopped. Knives reached a hand up to mockingly caress her hurt shoulder.

"You can thank me and the sharpshooter I hired for this," he grinned and gripped her shoulder in an iron fist. Jewell grit her teeth as Theory dropped from her hand.

He forced her onto her knees and said, "Don't fool my brother with your ways like his bitch from so long ago did, or I promise you you'll die a terrible death and he will suffer for the rest of his life."

With that both Legato and Knives were gone. The swordsman looked at the bed, Vash stared a her with confusion as she clutched her shoulder.

"We have to leave," Jewell breathed. Leah opened the door and sighed.

"Leaving so soon after getting shot isn't a good idea, Jewell, and coming from me you know it's important to take into account," Jack said; he stood with Vash and Jewell on the outskirts of Sparta.

"I know this Jack, I have to take Vash to Dankin before our next move. Don't worry I'll be back in a few days," Jewell told him.

"I'm just worried Jewell. And again coming from my thats a big thing," he argued.

"We've got to go, I promise I'll be back." I have to do this, I can'tlet Vash get tortured because of me.

I understand, Jewell. Go.

"Alright. Alright, get gone already," he said. "See ya again, Vash."

Vash smirked alittle, "Bye." Jack disappeared, the two that were left standing then began to walk.

"If ever you need someone to trust you know where to go, right?" she asked him.

He nodded, brushing his orange sunglasses up alittle.

~--*--~

"This is it for now then," Jewell said as they walked into the small town that was Dankin.

Vash looked around, "Kinda small, remind me why we came here again?"

"Because our plans have changed," she said, "I'll have to leave you here."

"What? Are you leaving me?"

"I have to Vash. You're in danger with me now. My worst thoughts have been put into play," she stop infront of an unmarked stand. Tears streamed down his eyes, "No! You can't!"

Seeing his tears made Jewell's eyes sting, she put her hands on his shoulders. "If you ever are in need and can't get to Bunker or the Ship just remember what you live for."

"Why can't I go with you?!"

"I'm sorry, Vash." She backed up away from him and disappeared in a wave of blue silver light. Vash blinked and collapsed to his knees, "No..."

I'll watch over you, I'll protect you when I can.

He slammed his fist into the ground, "Then get back here!"

I can't do that. Goodbye, and be careful.

The gunman's tears stained the ground, "Damnit..."

He looked around, the people walked along the streets going what they needed. "Goodbye," he whispered grudgingly as the tears continues to fall.
