Chapter 6: The story of the Black Rose
Starfire gathered everyone together so that they could all get in on the story. She dragged Yusuke and Cyborg from the TV, kicked Kuwabara out of his sleeping, stopped Beastboy from licking his wounds, chased a laughing Botan who flew around cackling like a witch, and made sure Robin was indeed going to listen.
“You didn't have to bring the whole crowd. I don't even know how you heard us speaking about us telling her….” Hiei looked at Starfire as if she were the weirdest alien ever. So as everyone was being gathered up, Kurama and Hiei returned to Raven's room, to see if she would be well enough to come out. They found Raven sitting at her mirror, lost in thought. Right as they came in, she sighed and said, “Everyone's out there. Waiting as impatiently as ever- just so that they can learn about my past. I thought this was going to just be between us three? And maybe Genkai?” She sighed again, and began to tie up her hair, keeping some loose bangs scattered across her forehead. She tilted her head as she looked at herself in the mirror, and then gently touched the red gem embedded into her forehead. A sad look appeared on her face. “So this is not the gem I think it is….” She looked glumly at her appearance. “I need a new look. I think I'm finally getting sick of it.” With that she off handly and randomly said, “Isneroth.” Suddenly clothes appeared- a blue tank top and short jean skirt. Raven's eyes rose in surprise, “How did I know that..?” Hiei and Kurama were looking at the articles of clothing.
*Kitsune, that's the same outfit… The same one she wore when she first met us. Don't suppose she remembers?* Hiei asked Kurama.
*She doesn't remember. She just remembers little things at random. We better leave though, so she can dress into that.*
With that, they left, leaving Raven to change. She put on the skirt and tank top, and kept her usual belt. She also kept the cape. She looked at the mirror again, and winced. I look so different… she thought. Suddenly, her eyes hazed over and she was pushed into seeing the past.
*Mini Flashback*
Raven stood in front of the mirror, and smiled as she saw Kindor coming up behind her. “Close you eyes,” he said. She looked inquisitively at him but closed her eyes. She felt him slip something around her throat. When his hands fell away, she opened her eyes. A simple gold chain with a ruby pendant was around her neck.
*End mini flashback*
As the picture faded away, Raven went back into herself with a sharp intake of air. Her mind was whizzing around. She bolted out of the room and into the room where the others were. There she saw Hiei holding up a gold chain with a ruby pendant to Kurama, who was nodding gravely. She stared at the necklace. She began to get short on breath. She fell to her knees, clutching her head. She screamed as she was sucked into reliving all of her memories. All the doors in her mind had now been slammed open, and everything was coming back to her.
*Bring on the Flashbacks!!!!* (OK, so the flashbacks will be coming nonstop. I will say when the next one comes up. But this will be all about her unknown past now, so it may be long.)
*Flashback #1*
Raven looked up from her sitting position. It was Kari. Raven grinned widely and said, “Whatcha doin' here?” Kari smiled back her blue eyes laughing. “Why, I wouldn't want to miss my best friend's 10th birthday!! It's 2 digits!! Come on!” Her black wavy hair whipped around as she ran off, beckoning Raven to follow her. Life had always been a happy place at her home. Nothing to worry about or anything. She smiled to herself as she ran to follow Kari. Kari was running to Raven's home. They laughed together as they raced there- with Kari in the lead. But Kari stopped abruptly. Her mouth wide open, she stared at the home. Raven, catching up with her, continued to laugh, but wondered why she had stopped. She looked at her home. It was gone. What had been the magnificent mansion was now smoldering ashes. Her mother lay of the front lawn. Her dad nowhere to be seen.
“What… What happened?” Asked Raven, her mouth quivering. Kari just shook her head in disbelief. She suddenly looked up, as if sensing danger. She looked around quickly. “What's wrong, Kari? Did you see something?” Raven looked at Kari questioningly.
The 14 year old Kari just managed a small smile and reassuringly said, “It's nothing. Come on. We should go.” Raven looked at her, as tears began to leak from her eyes. Kari's eyes softened and hugged Raven. Then her grip on Raven tightened and she whipped her around. Kari screamed in pain, as three arrows sprouted from her back. Raven gasped as Kari slumped onto her. Raven cried out as she looked at her hands covered in Kari's blood. Staring at the scenery around her, she backed away in fright, tears streaming down her face, and fled into the forest. She could hear someone following after her. She ran as fast as she could.
*End Flashback #1*
*Begin Flashback #2*
It had been two years since that incident. For now it was her 12th birthday. She had run as hard as she could that day on her 10th birthday, only to be surrounded by a dark mist and teleported to some different area. So now, here she was, captured, by the one who claimed to be her father. Trigon, he said, was his name. He said that this was his true form, not the homely fatherly figure. She didn't believe him. And she never would. This was not his father. She knew that this monster was the one who destroyed everything that she had ever loved and owned. So now, here she was, in Trigon's castle, exhausted from the day's work. This Trigon had taken her in as a daughter, claiming that she indeed was his daughter, considering the tremendous amount of power in her. He insisted that they were quite similar.
At his castle, she had started to take up lessons on magic and power, and fighting skills. He said that these skills would help her in the future. Still not trusting him, she did however; begin to take up the lessons. She wanted to become stronger, to be able to defend herself, to become powerful enough to defeat this Trigon. She knew he was using her for some sinister plot. And from this day on, when she made a vow to be one of the most powerful beings in the universe, she locked herself away in herself. She kept to herself, never showing her feelings, and withstood the torturous punishment that was wrought onto her. That was how her life was now. And she couldn't anything about it.
She sighed inwardly. When would be the day when she would triumph over him? Where was this power that he said that she had in herself? Was this really her fate?
*End of that thoughtful flashback….hehehehe*
*Here's another wonderful flashback*
Raven had finally done it. She had finally run away from her captors. She had cleverly escaped from them. She applauded herself inwardly, only to stop immediately- for suddenly she was pulled into a vision. She saw herself being chased-she was crying-the monster chasing after her was catching up-he shot arrows of fire at her-she stumbled and fell…. And her vision ended. She shook her head and took in deep breaths to clear her mind. Her eyes snapped open when she heard a rustling sound. Heeding her vision, she looked around in grim fright. What was it? Where was it coming from? Not even thinking, she flew forward, afraid of what could be chasing her. Had Trigon already found her? She looked back to see if anyone or thing were chasing her. Bad choice. Before she knew it she collided with a crash with the thing in front of her.
*Dammit, Raven!! Good!!* She screamed into her head. She looked up at the monster. His bow was out and three flaming arrows flew at her. She ran, trying to escape the flaming arrows. An arrow hit her. The flaming tip pierced the back of her shoulder. She stumbled and ducked. The two remain arrows flew harmless above her. She clenched her teeth and ripped the arrow out of her. She cried out. They burn had spread across her back. She looked up dizzily and forced herself up. She collapsed back onto the ground.
She looked back as pain glazed her eyes. She screamed. Black energy coursed through her and ejected onto the monster. The monster was consumed with this black magic and it contorted with pain. And then with an inhuman shriek, its skin fell of in tatters, and all that was left was a bloody pulp with dark magic writhing through it. Raven looked in horror at the destruction she had caused. Now she understood. The power that she had felt was demonic. And she knew nothing could change it. She was alone again. She cried.
*Like end flashback dude!!*
*Here's another flashback- in the last one she was like 13-14. Somewhere around that. Now she's 18.*
Raven laughed. It had been quite a few years past her escape from Trigon. And now she was stronger. Her power was controlled, only when she managed to keep her feelings and emotions in check, however. She was in charge of her life now, and no one could boss her around. She was not that Raven that had been incapable of protecting herself.
At the age 18, she had already become 2nd in power in the planet, Vinerios. IT had been easy. Just pick up some friends, good friends that were really powerful and could do whatever they wanted. “Yup, I have an awesome friend,” Raven said out loud. This awesome friend watched her from the door. He studied her. Raven had her hair tied up, but had been too lazy to keep back the numerous bangs that framed her face. Still pretty short- he laughed inwardly about that. Raven hated it when he made fun of her about her height. She was wearing a short jean skirt, a blue tank top, her gold belt, and her usual blue cloak.
“And who is that “awesome” friend of yours? It better be me!” He said with a mischievous smile.
Raven looked up, startled. “Trian! Y'know what? I've always hated your name.” She wrinkled her nose in mock disgust. But it was true, she hated his name, it sounded so much….. Like a tree.
“!!!” Trian opened his mouth in an O shape. He put on a mocking shocked look. “Raven! You don't have to say that right at me!! I'm human too! I have feelings.”
With the last two sentences, Raven burst out laughing. First of all, he wasn't even human. He was all demon, except for like maybe one eighth of human blood in him. Second of all, the expression on his face when he said that he had feelings just made Raven laugh.
“You need to smile more often. It makes you prettier. When you don't smile, it makes you look like a hag,” Said Trian offhandedly.
Raven was taken aback. She sniffed. And stared at her mirror again. “Please tell me that you didn't' take that seriously,” said Trian. “I took it seriously,” replied Raven, sulky. “Raven!” whined Trian. Raven glared at him, and shot a pillow at him with her powers. With that she left the room, with Trian muttering after her, “Women.”
*OOO raven's over reactionary~! Hehe. But anyways, end that flash back. Let's go back to the present for a sec, k??*
*this is the present, but only for a bit.*
“Her mind is overloading. At this rate, her brain could get seriously damaged, if she takes any more of the impact that this is giving to her…” Kurama looked at her in nervous thoughtfulness. Hiei was staring out the window, gritting his teeth.
“How is it that this girl can go through being burned nearly to death, but can't survive having her memory back?” Muttered Hiei.
The remaining teen titans glared at Hiei. This guy didn't know anything about Raven. They were her best friends. He knew nothing. Or this was what they thought.
Raven was lying on the cough, more like floating on top of it. She drew in a sharp breath and sat up suddenly. She looked straight ahead in her now sitting position with her eyes burning white and black tingling magic. Everyone immediately rushed to her side.
“Her pulse, it's too high!! If it doesn't lower any time soon, she'll be dead!” Said Kurama urgently.
*Onto the flashbacks again, don't worry, they're almost over)
Raven was now nineteen. It was her birthday today, and she really didn't expect anything good to happen on her birthday- after all she had had a bad history with them. She didn't really expect anything to happen, and she wished and hoped fervently that there would be no celebration, and everyone would forget. She really hated surprises. But usually what she wanted to happen never happened.
She got a surprise party.
Of course, Kindor, had planned it. But that wasn't the surprise… unfortunately. He had planned one of the biggest parties- inviting their friends and other random people and demons. They definitely had surprised her. Right when they had surprised her, she had broken quite a few vases and windows. It was rather drafty now. But no matter. That was just a surprise. Raven was not ready for the next surprise.
“Excuse me!! I would like to give my gift to Raven, now!!” Trian bellowed out into the room. Everyone hushed up immediately- for it was their ruler speaking right now.
Raven looked up from where she was sitting, quite bored and annoyed. She expected some dull black rose or a necklace of some kind. But, she was on a roll on being wrong and so she continued to be wrong.
Everyone cleared a pathway for Trian to get through to Raven. The guest bowed politely and in honor to him and Raven. With the biggest grin pasted on his face, he pulled out a little box.
“You know what this is Raven?” He asked with the grin still on his face.
The usually unemotional girl's mouth dropped open and shock was registered on her face. “You're kidding me right…?” She asked uncertainly. Trian shook his head. He opened the small box and an intricately designed, but delicate and thin, silver ring with a red gem was nestled in the box with soft cloth surrounding it. Raven did not know what to say. And another window broke with a shatter.
Trian looked taken aback. “Was that a no Raven?”
Raven was screaming in her head. She didn't know what to do. Then she said it, “No… that was a yes.”
*End of that flashback. Don't worry, she doesn't get together with him.*
Now the Flashbacks came in short streams.
This sign: * the asterisk, indicates the end of one memory and the start of another. Hope that isn't confusing :D
*Here we go!!*
Trian smiled at his betrothed, the beautiful Raven. It was all working according to plan. He would end up using her power for his well being and bigger boost of power.
*
Raven watched in the mirror as Trian placed the simple necklace was being placed on her neck. She smiled lovingly at Trian.
*
Raven had stolen a prized possession- one of the most powerful artifacts in the world. It was all hers now. Now she had all the power she had wanted, and she would share it with Trian. But before she knew it, two demons had slipped in and taken it out of her hands as she had stolen down the alley. One was rather short- kind of Raven's height and one was taller with silver hair and fox ears. Raven chased after them. “Who are you!?” She snarled angrily. “G' nigh', milady. The short one over there with what we stole from you is Hiei. But my name you must earn.” The fox- eared one said.
*
Raven screamed in frustration. The artifact had broken! Hiei and the unnamed one and she had fought for it. But they had all clumsily misplaced their attacks somehow, and it hit the artifact. The artifact had shattered and a blinding light had enveloped them. And then with a lash, something black came out of the shattered pieces, and had cut a permanent kind of tattoo on them. This meant they would be bonded forever.
*
“Hey you! Girl!” said Hiei. “I have a name y'know. Its Raven.” Raven replied exasperatedly. “No matter. You might want to watch your back. That green haired guy that always wears the trenchcoat? He's scheming behind your back.” Hiei said.
“Trian? Hah. That's a laugh. He would never do that.” Replied Raven. “I wouln't be so sure…” the unnamed one said back.
*
Hiei and the unnamed one had been right!! Trian had been scheming behind her back! She stared at the wall, trying to get control over her emotions. She had confronted Trian on it, they were no longer betrothed. He said that he hated her.
*
Trian had struck. He attacked Raven. She was able to keep up with his attacks for some time, but with all the relentless blows of very powerful magic, she began to lose her power. With a flash of green magic (This is a sum up of the prologue, a very vague one.)
Trian managed to blow her cover completely, just to find that after the green fire had receded, there was no Raven. Just a simple red rose.
*
“Didn't we warn you?!” yelled Hiei, “We told you that that would happen!” Raven looked at him with dulled eyes. “Hiei, quiet,” said the unnamed one, “”well I do believe that you have earned my name, Raven. You can call me Kurama. Or even Youko. I don't really care, personally.
“Who are you two?”
