A Mother's Lullaby

 

Clutching the child to her chest, she ran through the streets. Her breathing was labored, and she knew she couldn't go on much longer. She slipped into an alleyway and scooted into the darkest corner she could find. The toddler started to cry, a dangerous thing for the mother. Crooning softly to the frightened baby, she rocked her arms gently back and forth. When the his cries did not cease, she began to sing a soft lullaby, her voice calming the child.

 

“Hush now, my baby.

Be still, love, don't cry.

Sleep as you're rocked by the stream.

Sleep and remember

My last lullaby

So I'll be with you when you dream.”

 

She heard them coming, and wrapped the baby in her cloak. Gently, she laid him down in a small crate in the shadows.

 

“My son, I have nothing I can give,

But this chance that you might live

I pray we'll meet again.”

 

A second before the guards rounded the corner, she whispered her last words to the baby.

 

“Be safe…”

 

They caught her by the hair and pulled her away, never noticing the small bundle in the corner.
