A Sorrowful Destiny

-------------------------
She was the happiest girl ever.
But she was going to die.

So, that wasn't the best thing to be happy with but she'd known since she was 15 and she was 17 now.
They said she would die when she was 16 but she fooled them all. The doctors didn't know what to think. Every diagnosis she'd ever had either doomed her or forsake her to a bloody surgery.

She was tired.
Tired of all the operations, of all the doctors playing God with her body as though they could really perform miracles.
Tired of others sympathy for her “condition” and the way they won't talk to her like she was normal just like them.

Being sick doesn't make her any different than everyone else. She just had to be careful.
Her parents were the worst. They demanded that she stay in a hospital but she wouldn't have that. She wanted to go outside, if not to play then to sit and watch. She was far too weak to play.

But she didn't care.
She loved watching people.
The older ones trudging along as if their next step would be their last, hesitating every time their foot came into contact with the ground.
The parents shepherding their children like sheep through the busy streets.
The children noticed everything on their way, even some meeting her eyes and smiling at her.
The businessmen and women with their briefcases, talking on their cell phones and generally ignoring the world around them.
People were very ignorant, especially with themselves.

She heard the shuffling of her nurse's feet outside her door and turned away from the window.
They hadn't allowed her outside today for she was getting steadily worse.
She had heard the conversation between the doctor and her parents. They agreed to allow them to perform a new type of surgery, although not perfect, it her raised survival level to 68% rather than 30%, if it worked that it. For her parents it was a temporary life preserver. And as the nurse came in with another rolling bed, she assumed they thought the surgery was best done early. She didn't mind or care. She was bored today and needed to leave the room anyway, even though they were just going down the hall and in another secured surgery room. It was all the same to her. They fixed her in place and readied the machines for the long and tricky operation.
A masked doctor's head came into her line of vision and a breathing mask was placed over her mouth and nose.

“Count back from 100. That's it. Don't you worry; you'll be okay after this is over.” The doctor's words dulled and faded from her ears as her world plummeted into darkness.

Five grueling hours later the doctor met with her parents in the waiting room. Their hopes fell as they saw his grim expression.
The father spoke first

“How is she?” His voice was raw and torn with emotions and unshed tears.

“She'll be just fine.”

The parents sighed with relief but still held each other for there was more news.
The doctor watched them closely to make sure they were ready then continued.

“During the operation, one of my surgeons noticed a mass of tissue on the heart that was not normal. Upon testing it we found it to be cancerous.” The doctor held up a hand when the father tried to speak. “I'm not finished. We have also found this cancer is parasitic.” The parents looked at him dumbfounded as they tried to grasp the new information.

“What does this mean doctor?”

“I'm afraid this means that this life form is living off of your daughter's heart. We could not remove it for fear of killing her. The original surgery did succeed but with the new diagnosis we have, her survival level will drop drastically and we have no way to tell when it is she will die. I'm very sorry to have had to tell you this.”

As the parents cried in each other's arms, the doctor left to attend to another patient.

The seventeen year old girl died the next day after she had fallen asleep on a bench outside.
