A Trail of Blood and Thunder.

Forward.

These three pieces are an English assignment I did for school. I based them on wolves from an RP site that I run and I've decided to post them. They are a myth, a narrative, and a poem. To see my wolf RP site go to www.geocities.com/silverd_87/index.html

How the Dark Lord was Born.

This is one of our tales. It is our interpretation of how a great warrior was turned to become what is known as the Dark Lord. This story is told only among us, the wolves. For it is out deepest shame that such a monster came from the wolf clan.

Not long ago, a mighty warrior came to our woods. He was fierce and strong, but bold and arrogant. Saber was his name. We accepted him into our lands because we needed him at the time, for we were at war with the coyotes. Though he fought well and won us our war, he would not abide by our peaceful laws.

It is our custom that each new wolf would leave for three days and nights. The wolf would take neither food nor water. On the first night the wolf god, Akuma, would appear and give the wolf a quest to complete as well. If, by the third night, the wolf could complete the quest and overcome the hunger and thirst, all the wolves would celebrate, and the wolf would choose a pack to live in.

Soon after the war, the day came when Saber was to make his journey. On the first night, Akuma appeared and said, "You must not kill the fawn." Saber was confused, for he had been told he was not to eat.

On the final night, as Saber was returning, he spied the fawn. Saber was hungry and greedy, and had never cared for our rituals. Like a flash, he turned and pounced on the fawn. Saber devoured the innocent creature.

Akuma saw Saber disgracing the forest. He became furious and sent forth a bolt of lightning. It struck Saber, sending him flying. He lay on the ground for hours, but at exactly midnight, the hooting of the owls ceased. The forest was silent. All the creatures hid as Saber rose, impossibly, to his paws. As though charred, his fur was black. By day and night they say he is a black shadow. But at twilight, only twilight, he glows faintly violet. Many believe this is the time he had murdered the fawn. His eyes were golden and glowing, daggers piercing into one's soul. Some say he was mad, others, pure evil. All that is known is that he brings hate, fear, and death wherever he goes. He is the soul without a light, the shadow in the night. He is the darkness our hearts fear. Speak his name and he will come, swift as doom winged.

This is how the Dark Lord was born. Beware of the night, lest he finds you alone in it.

Aiming for the Heart.

I looked up, towards the sky, as I returned home. Dark clouds were moving in; there was to be a storm. I moved more quickly, a hare held tightly in my jaws. Zaphod is my name, and I was bringing food to my family. As the first raindrop smacked my nose, I climbed the crest of the hill. Suddenly, I dropped my hare in surprise.

My home was before me, but so was a wolf that should not have been there. He was large and black, and I knew at once that he was the Dark Lord, Saber. I should have done something, but I was paralyzed. Arashi, my mate, was there. She was lying in the dirt, a gash across her neck. I didn't want to, but I knew she was dead. I whimpered softly as I saw behind her...Igen. Igen was my youngest pup, and he was dead as well. Their blood was all around, shining and glistening in the moonlight.

I could only watch as Saber picked up each of my pups and snapped their necks. I couldn't believe he would do this to me. I heard the pups' small, innocent voices crying out, "Father, Father, help us!"

Then they were silenced, one by one. Kumo, my bright and energetic daughter. Gekido, my shy son. And Yamabiko, my eldest, strongest son. One by one, they fell silent, their lives snuffed out like tiny flames.

As I leapt down, Saber turned and ran. A terrible darkness rose up inside me, a horrible boiling anger that welled up in my heart. I turned and buried my nose in their fur and held them close once more. Arashi, beautiful and kind. Igen, witty and wise. Kumo, loving and fun. Gekido, coy and peaceful. Yamabiko, strong and swift. I buried each of them carefully and with all the love I possessed, and a deep shame, for I was unable to save them.

Then I turned and followed Saber's bloody paw prints into the forest, into the storm, into the night as the dying voices of my family haunted me. No matter how long it took, I would find him.

And he Fell.

The night was dark and stormy,

As I ran along the trail.

I was Zaphod on a mission,

And my quest I could not fail.

I was hunting for revenge,

I wanted blood tonight.

I wouldn't rest until I found him,

I was looking for a fight.

I found Saber on the Cliffside,

He was standing by the edge.

I growled aloud and cursed him

As I moved onto the ledge.

"My family is watching

From the place you sent them to!

Not one of them deserved to die,

So I'll take my pay from you!"

Saber only turned and laughed,

As I moved to him near.

He laughed at me, then growled with hate,

The sound filled me with fear.

I heard a crash way down below,

I leaned to take a look.

A raging river had been formed

Of a docile little brook.

As thunder boomed, the rain came down

And lightning split the sky.

"I'll send you to your grave tonight!"

To Saber I gave the cry.

I leapt at him, he tried to bite,

To scratch and score my side.

I turned and stepped out to the left

So his attack fell wide.

In the mud, my paw slipped,

Saber moved in to kill.

So I worked up all my courage,

And I summoned all my will.

Saber now stood over me,

His razor teeth were bared.

I snarled at him, tried not to show

That I was truly scared.

Saber lifted up his paw,

But then opened his jaws instead.

As he darted in to bite my throat,

I kicked him over my head.

I struggled to stand up on my paws

And watched him. Heard him yell.

He tried to squirm and stop himself,

But, alas, he fell.

Saber hit the water below

With a horrific splash.

I growled again, then looked around,

I needed something to smash.

I was angry then, because he died.

I didn't want to see him fall.

But if I hadn't stopped him then,

He'd have surely killed us all.

I said a small farewell to him

As I looked down at the water.

If only he'd not gone mad and killed

My mate, my sons, my daughter.

"Warriors of your caliber,

There will always be too few.

Though you were a demon at the end,

Father, I'll remember you."
