Chapter 2

Multi Faceted Hues

Morning had come and along with morning the three men got up and headed out once again to meet the trade caravan with their precious cargo of one red and black Skerip. While up in the branches the loner snored on oblivious to what was going on around him. Up in the canopy a creature glided effortlessly toward them.

Drakan's ear twitched as an odd sound traveled through the forest toward him. He mumbled in his sleep and shifted his weight just enough so that he was comfortable but he didn't fall off the branch. Several birds around him kept on serenading the morning sun as a dark shadow flew closer.

The shadowy creature landed a few trees away from Drakan's chosen sleeping spot. It's parrot-like fore talons gripped the branch. The feline-ish hind claws flexed to find a good hold on it's chosen perch. Just barely visible was the creature's gaudy feathered head, tail, and wings; the later two were fanned out slightly for balance.

It kept staring at Drakan watching him sleep 'The great Buffoon anyone could sneak up on him cause I found it just a little two easy.'

Drakan cracked open his eye and watched the creature while maintaining the pretense of sleep around him. 'Now what's that old crow up to?' Closing his green gold eye once again Drakan slept blissfully on unaware of the repercussions involved.

The paragryph launched off the branch and glided over to where Drakan lay. Silently the paragryph landed in front of Drakan's muzzle. It blinked its huge luminous yellow eyes and immediately balled up one of its fore talons. Striking Drakan on the top of his head the paragryph watched as it had the desired effect of scaring Drakan awake and causing him to fall out of the tree.

*CLONK*

"Eeeahhhhhh," twigs and small branches broke off under the plummeting body of the 1 reg (ton) Jungle Cat. With a resounding crunch Drakan ground himself lying on top of several broken and smashed bushes. He muttered to himself after regaining the air back into his massive lungs. "Rilith, I hate you."

Rilith gazed down at the young Jungle Cat noting all the broken branches. 'Humph that'll teach em!'

An answering murmur from the forest floor was barely noticed by Rilith's extremely sensitive ears. "I heard that."

'You where meant to.' Rilith remembered finding Drakan as a youngster. The poor bedraggled, half starved pup had stumbled into his lair and not 3 days later he heard what had happened. Rilith had taken pity on the young Jungle Cat so he opted to adopt the pup and teach him the way of the forest. 'You still have to lots to learn Drakan. That is if you wish to become a Jokit. First and foremost never fall asleep on the job...'

Drakan stood up interrupting his mentor and adoptive father, "cause you might wake up dead. I know, I know, I know. Geesh old man don't you think I know it. Anyway I need to get back to tracking those humans." Drakan stood up and limped away leaving the old Paragryph behind.

Rilith watched his young charge limp off into the thick undergrowth of the jungle. Drakan was extremely smart for his people but even though he was intelligent the dummy had not a scrap of mind magic. Even the most basic of mind speech was unknown to him. Drakan could receive mind sent messages but he himself couldn't send. 'He'll learn. One way or another he'll learn.' Turning around he looked into a nearby tree where two glowing eyes looked back at him. 'Trak follow Drakan. Report back if he gets into major trouble that he can't get out of. Now go and fly with the speed of the jungle queen.' A small shadow launched out of the branches and zipped off in the direction that Drakan had went. 'Drakan all I can provide you is a companion. I know you will get into trouble. The stones never lie and nether do my visions. They have told me that once you leave the jungle your true quest will come. But the gods will guide you and you won't be alone. Somehow I see happiness in your bleak future. Why, I don't know?' Turning around the ancient paragryph launched out of the tree and flew back to his cliff side lair hoping that his prediction turned out for the better.

Drakan crunched through the underbrush his nose to the ground following the men's scent. Every couple of feet the scent grew stronger. 'I'm on the right track now only to catch back up to them.' Drakan left the forest floor for the safety of the tree branches that were like an interstate system for his kind.

Leaping and jumping through the trees, similar to a squirrel, Drakan would manage to catch back up to those humans once again. He knew that tonight would be the last night for him to rescue the bird and kill the men little did he know that his heroics would be his down fall.
