Chapter Two
Wish Upon A Star..
*****

Lady Arailani hummed softly to herself as she gazed upon the assorted gadgets and gizmos littering the large metal table before her. Any minute now, the ingredients would arrive to create the new guardian of Earth. The young fuschia haired goddess was barely able to contain her glee. For so long, she ached for a daughter, but since Goddesses were forbidden from falling in love and marrying, the dream was but a fleeting memory.
It was a stupid rule, really...forbidding love and carnal pleasures in the event that such 'nonsense' would distract from her duties... but Arailani was determinned to live out her dream. Her maternal instrincts kicked into overdrive with the 'millenium baby' hysteria down on planet Earth and only the task that lay before her would cure her of them.

Unlike humans, gods and goddesses were usually born by a magical and at times, mechanical method rather than the exchange of bodily fluids. A crystal, containing the data that shaped his or her personality, appearence and destiny would be fashioned by the Overminds and infused with the DNA of a 'mother' god, thus transfering some of their power to the crystal.
It was a long and complicated procedure, rarely, if ever used but in these desperate times, it was a last resort. Still, Lady Arailani was estatic all the same. Tanaka's approval had greenlighted her as position of the new goddess's mentor, the one to teach her the finer points in nurturing and caring for an entire civillization.
It would be tough at times, the fuschia haired goddess of the sun knew, but it was all worth it in the end..

"The crystal has arrivied, m'lady." came the voice of a servent angel as he entered the room carrying a small bundle wrapped in ornate pink silk.

"Ahh! Thank you, Gabriel!" Arailani cooed, eagerly snatching the bundle from the angel's arms like a greedy child at Christmas. As the servent made his exit, the young goddess skipped to her metal worktop and uncovered her precious gift.
The crystal was about two feet tall and three feet wide, shaped like an egg and smooth to the touch. Although black in colour due to the absence of life inside, little hues of baby pink could be seen glinting from where the light caught the stone.

"Hello, my darling." the goddess whispered softly as she picked up a scapel, preparing herself for the final creation stage. "I can't begin to tell you how long I've waited to meet you.."

With one swift flick, she slashed the palm of her right hand clean open, causing a rich foutain of crimson to bubble over the olive fleash. She whinced at the pain, but it was only a flesh wound..it would heal in no time. Squeesing her hand to shed the last drops of blood, Arailani gently massaged her lifes fluid into the blackened crystal, watching as it absorbed into the dark surface, swirling and shifting within untill, after what felt like an eternity, sculpted itself into the perfect image of a foetus.

"How fast she grows.." Arailani thought outloud, her deep turquise eyes mesmerised by the little being within the stone, glowing a faint pink as it floated within.

The young goddess stayed in her room for hours, never leaving the little desk as she watched, entranced, her 'child' grow and thrieve before her eyes. Another few days and she'll be full grown, perfectly primed for the guardianship of Earth.
That thought saddened Arailani to a degree, for she had longed to see her child go through a peaceful childhood on the lush beaches of Gaia Iri, to come running to her, all chocolate-smeared smiles and muddy dresses, full of nothing with love and the wide-eyed innocence of youth.

Alas, it was never to be, for gods and goddesses lived only as guardians, nothing more. Servents to maintain the delicated flow of the universe...

Out of the shadows, a dark figure stepped. A smirk graced black-stained lips as ice blue eyes fell upon the sight before them. The goddess of the sun, Lady Arailani, fast asleep at her desk with her head rested on folded arms...seated before a large black crystal that held within the body of a ten year old 'god child'.
Pandora's eyes widdened. The energy emitting from that life form...it was unlike anything she'd ever felt before.....it was powerful, maybe more powerful than Tanaka-san, and it was calling out to her, begging to be absorbed.

And absorb it, she would. Tip-toeing across the room, the Dark Lady slowly inched herself from tile to tile, her blackened robes making no sounds as she stalked her prey. All too soon, she had come before the crystal...all she had to do was reach out her hands..

Suddenly, just before her fingertips met the cool, smooth surface, the lifeform inside turned. It shifted, morphing into the shape of a young girl, the very image of Lady Arailani herself. And she was awake, looking questionably at Pandora with two haunting orbs of emerald green.

"Take one last look at the world, kiddo.....because when I'm done with you, there'll be none of it left!" she cackled, slamming her bare hands down hard onto the smooth surface of the crystal. All at once, her body was filled with an intense wave of euphoria, the energy surging through her veins unlike anything she'd ever felt before. It was delicious, the raw power charging her energy levels to the max and beyond.

Never in her wildest dreams did Pandora imagine a god-child to hold so much strenght. It was incredible...no words could describe the pleasure that rushed through her and as she bit down hard on her lip to prevent a shriek of esctasy from escaping, her twisted mind knew she wanted more...

However, just before she could sap the last of the child's energy, she was suddenly brought back to reality on a bungee cord as a sudden burst of wind made her jump and fall backwards in alarm.
"WHAT IN THE NAME OF HADES DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING!" Arailani yelled, so loud she startled even herself.
Peering up from her uncertmonial position on the hard floor, Pandora smirked behind her dark hood, met with the site of the angered Sun Goddess, ready and willing to defend the unborn god-child.

The Dark Lady let out a sadistic chuckle, standing upright and removing her heavy cloak, exposing her spandex clad form to her advisary as she stood confident, hands on hips and aura blazing with rekindled strenght, glowing blue against the pitch black of her hair.
"You can't protect Earth forever, dearest 'Lani-chan! The green planet is long overdue for some good old fashioned chaos. Now if you'll just step aside, I might just spare your pitiful little life."

"I would rather die than watch you lay waste to the third planet!" Arailani growled, her aura flaring a dazzling gold as she readied herself for battle.

"You wish to fight me? HA! You would'nt last five minutes with a limabean! Why, you're not even immortal yet!" the raven haired goddess of Death sneered, baring a set of pearly white fangs at the fuschia haired goddess.

Arailani frowned, summoning her energy to form a dark blue, football-sized sphere in the palm of her right hand, her eyes narrowing to slits.
"I may be inexperienced, but at least I'm not a maniac!" she hissed.

"Such big words for a runt...let's see if there's any strenght to back them up!"

That did it for Arailani. With one swift flick of the wrist, she hurled the ball of blue light at Pandora, only to yell out in alarm as the raven haired Dark Lady countered with a volley of stinging red ki arrows.

"You should know better than to compete with me for I always win!" Pandora cackled over the roar of explosions that shook the large, spacious research room to it's very foundations. Spitting dark blood from her mouth, Arailani growled and lunged forward, grabbing the evil demoness by the neck and squeesing with all her strenght as they both fell backwards onto the floor.

"Thats..because..you..never...fight..FAIR!!" she half shrieked, hands clawing at the older woman as they rolled around the hard wood floors, punching and pulling at each other's hair as the rule book flew out the window. With a feral growl, Pandora curled one of her slender legs to her chest, letting a powerful kick send the fuschia haired goddess flying across the room, slamming hard into a wall that promptly crumbled to dust behind her.

Both panting for pant, Arailani looked up through the blood soaked veil of hair that hung like a marroon curtain over her eyes, watching as Pandora stood smirking over her.
"Tell me, Arailani...do you want to die today?" she queried in a coitish voice as her burly hands fisted the front of the fushia haired goddess's robes, wrenching her to her feet. She leaned in to glare at her opponent, faces just inches from each others, both etched with upmost loathing.

"Go to Hell!" Arailani spat, globs of blood flecking the Dark Lady's porcelean cheek. Icy blue eyes narrowed with raw fury, a blaze of crimson suddenly lighting up the room. before the younger goddess could even blink, she found herself immobilized in midair, her body stiff and antrophied, burning with an excruciating pain of which she'd never known.

"ARRRRRRRGGHHH!!!!" Arailani let out a cry like a banshee, shrieking as the pain stabbed her body like a thousand knives. Through the sheer agony, she forced herself to look at the Dark Lady, standing a good twenty feet below. She was laughing diabolicly, her arms outstretched and fists slowly clenching shut.
With each clench, the pain got worse and it was taking most of Arailani's self control not to pass out.

"Painfull, is'nt it? Do you still want to die, bitch?" Pandora sneered up at her, her hands clenching tighter to the point Arailani felt as though her ribcage would explode from the pressure.

"You...you'll never win, Pandora...never!" she gasped. All at once, the pressure disappeared, replaced only by a rush of wind as she felt from midair, crashing hard enough into the wood panel flooring to leave a large crater, debris strewn wildly around her.

"Oh, but that's were you're wrong, Arailani, for you see...I am more powerful than you will ever dream of being. You are but an insignificant speck on the scope of my desire to burn brighter than any star in the sky...you once had a fire, you pathetic excuse of a goddess, but you let it flicker in the wind. Well, now the time has come for that flame to be extinguished..." Pandora raised her hand once more, channeling her energy into an omnious red spike of light, moving in for the final blow.

Arailani coughed, feeling the delectable, metallic taste of blood on her lips. She knew now she could never win this battle, but the fate of planet Earth rested in her hands...she knew that all too well as she glanced sideways towards the blackened crystal, unharmed by the volley of energy blasts as it lay on it's side beneath the metal table..
It's occupant looked at her with wide eyes, full of fear and uncertainty..

With her last ounce of strenght, the fushia haired goddess stood up shakily, feeling her powers slowly drain away with the blood that gushed from her many wounds. It would'nt be long now before she too joined Lady Shimagami in the cold ground..

"Be safe.." she whispered slowly as the white light seeped through her bloodied fingers, encasing the blackened crystal within the soft glow. The young girl inside let out an inaudible yell, but it was too late. arailani knew now what she must do...

"You can't save her....you can only die trying.." Pandora yelled.

The crystal began to fade...shift out of this dimention...

"URK!!"

The sing of metal echoed in the night....a thud.

Darkness and nothing more...

Ayumi smiled to herself as she sat on the veranda of her modest Okinawa home, watching the stars burning bright in the sky. It was nights like these that made life worth living..crystal clear sky, as black as velvet and dotted with millions of twinkling jewels, the all seeing eyes of the gods that watched down with silent serinity on the sleeping world.
And yet, as she lay back against the smooth tiles, her heart ached dully inside her chest. She longed to share this night with someone, to ease her troubled heart of the pain she'd felt for what seemed like an eternity.

"Oh, Toshiro...why did you have to leave me alone in this world?" she thought out loud, a single tear escaping her soft blue eyes as she thought of her dearly departed husband, a hero and a kindred spirit, lost at sea only to be found by the gods of the ocean...taking his place among them as another brightly burning star in the blackened sky.

"How I long for someone to ease this pain...someone I can love as much as I loved you.."

Little did she know, her prayers were about to be answered..
