Seal of Day Saga

Part Three: The Angel of Death

By: Jennifer L. Bratcher

Chris spun his scythe in his hands before he leapt off of the stone fence. Three of the

five werewolves charged at him, snarling and slashing claws. He swept past the first one, bringing the curved blade up at the right instant.

Beheading killed everything, no matter what the weapon was made out of. It was his favorite method of killing because he could use his signature weapon, the scythe. It whistled through the air as it contacted with the werewolf's neck. The inhuman amber eyes widened as the blade separated the head from the body in a crimson spray.

The vampire girl took the moment's confusion to jump for her gun. A vampire using a gun. The only vampire that has been recorded of doing that is Forest, the assassin chick, Chris thought as she aimed and fired, getting one dead in the chest. Her burgundy hair fell around her face, falling from the chopsticks as she aimed again.

Chris narrowed his eyes and found the Alpha. He rushed at him and the werewolf caught the scythe blade with both hands. He snarled, "Boy, I don't know what you are, but you're not gonna stop me."

"Wanna bet," Chris replied with a smile as he shook his hair back. His pointed ears were easily seen, displaying his elfin heritage.

Alpha looked terrified as he stepped back, dropping the blade and clutching the stone. "You're a Fey!" he gasped.

Chris smiled crookedly and quipped, "Gee, you think?" He swung the scythe and beheaded the Alpha. "Geeze, I thought I would have a little more difficulty getting this," he stated as he picked up the gem.

It glowed like a miniature sun in his hands as he looked at it. They knew so little about it, what it could do and how to activate it. He heard a snarl behind him and a gunshot. He turned around to see the werewolf crumple to the ground. He spun back around to pick up the other fallen girl.

He pushed strands of black hair off her pale face. He could feel her pulse beat erratically under his fingers as he lightly touched her throat. Her bright blue eyes looked up at him, dulled from the pain and shock. "Elf," she murmured as he lifted her off the ground.

Chris grinned wirily as he looked around. The vampire walked over to them and looked at the girl he was holding. He spun to face her and held out his cross with one hand as he held the tall girl with the other. She was slender and didn't weigh much, but she was almost as tall as he was.

The vampire stepped back, fear evident in her green eyes. He smirked and said, "That's it, leech, I don't wanna kill you now."

"Okay, Angel of Death, thank you for saving us and all, but give me the fucking gem," the vampire hissed.

Chris tilted his head and acted like he was seriously considering this. "Oh, yeah, sure, uh, NO! What sort of idiot do you take me for, vampire? Like I'm gonna give you the fucking gem? Hell no, and besides, you wouldn't even know what to do with it."

"Get it destroyed, Choir Boy," she snapped, "What the fuck did you think?"

Chris heard more howls in the background. "Ah, shit," he cursed as he looked around. Then he saw the dead priest lying there. He walked over to him, holding the girl in his hands.

He crossed himself and bent to one knee. He said a quick prayer and heard the vampire drew breath in a painful hiss. The girl shifted in his arms and Chris looked down at her. She seemed to be better off than he found her. Curious, he noticed that her muscles and flesh were repairing themselves at a frightful rate, but she was fully alive.

He heard the howls again and the vampire snapped, "Give me the fucking gem and the vampire hunter and we'll be okay."

"Shit," he cursed again and started to run, jumping over the fence. He was aware that the vampire was following him to his car. He decided to let her come along as he placed the raven haired girl in the backseat. He looked her over, noting how tall and angular she was. Her features were sharp, not unattractive, but different. Wild almost.

The vampire slipped into the Eclipse's passenger door and glared at him with those light, bright green eyes. The best thing about being the Church's personal vampire and demon slayer was all the pretty girls that Chris encountered. This vampire was no exception with her exotic looks, those eyes and that hair. Besides, he could get answers from her.

He turned on the engine and shifted into gear. He stated, "Where are you staying?"

"Why are you asking?" she snapped.

He sped out into the street, swerving a corner and squealing rubber. He smirked and answered, "Because I'm giving you five minutes for you to collect your things before I get us somewhere safe."

"Oh, what a gentleman," she said snidely.

"I wouldn't piss him off," a husky, harsh voice said from the back. The raven hair girl sat up, her long hair brushing around her pale features and bringing out the intensity of her blue eyes. He realized at that moment that she was the one he was going to have to worry about, not the vampire.

The vampire asked, "Are you okay?"

"Dandy, except I know what it's like to have little bites ripped out of my skin," she answered sarcastically. Then she asked, "Who's the elf?"

"Half elf," Chris corrected, "Half human."

"Sounds like you two have something in common," the vampire teased.

The girl flipped her off and said, "Up yours. I'm Alex Night. Who are you?"

Chris froze. He stuttered, "Night as in the Lupine High Council?"

"As in my grandad is Brendan Night and my cousin is Brandon Night," Alex answered cheerfully.

"Oh, fuck," Chris grumbled as he looked at the road. If she doesn't make it, then I'd have the whole Lupine council breathing down my necks, including Brandon Night. And I don't want that guy pissed at me because I let his cousin get raped by werewolves or something else, he thought grimly.

Alex chuckled and said, "Man, you should see your face. I wouldn't worry about the council if I were you, dude."

"Why?" Chris asked. She leaned up and looked at him with brilliant, intense blue eyes. Bluer than a sapphire, bluer than the sky, just a bright intense, perfect blue. Not wolf eyes.

She smirked and said, "Like Minerva said, we have something in common. We're half human."

"Still, the Lupine doesn't care about that though," Chris replied.

Alex chuckled and said, "I wouldn't worry about it. Now, let's just get this gem destroyed and kill the fucker so I can get back to more useful stuff."

The vampire reloaded her gun and popped the clip in with a startling crack. She put a round in the chamber and turned on the safety. She stated, "Look, this is nasty Alex. This guy is giving you a chance out of it."

"Yeah, well, it's gotten personal," Alex hissed as she looked around.

The vampire asked, "What is it?"

"Where the fuck is my crossbow?" Alex snapped.

Chris shrugged and answered, "I didn't see a crossbow. I've got a spare if you want one."

"No, that's my damned crossbow. Turn back and get it!" she growled.

He snapped, "Listen here, baby, I just risked my life to save your asses and get this, okay. You can get another bloody crossbow."

"No, I want my crossbow," Alex stubbornly argued.

Chris snapped, "No, you're not getting your bleeding crossbow, okay. I'd rather shag a corpse."

"Shag, well, aren't you British?" the vampire asked slyly.

Chris drew his crucifix and thrust it at her face. The vampire snarled and backed against the window as her eyes bled from green to crimson. "You better shut that fucking mouth of yours, lady, or I'll seal it shut with a cross."

Alex snapped, "Don't do that!" Then she lunged for his cross. He jerked his arm away from her and slammed his elbow into her nose. She cursed and looked at him from a bloody nose. "Hey, I thought you were a good guy!" she growled.

Chris sighed as he put his cross away. "Listen, ladies, not that I wouldn't mind being with a couple of really hot girls, but this Seal thing is dangerous."

"How?" Alex asked.

"Because it's more than what you two think, okay. I've gotta get it destroyed," he answered.

The vampire leaned back in the seat and propped her feet on the dash board. She smiled and so did Alex. "Then you're taking us with you," they chorused together.

Chris groaned and slammed his head into the steering wheel. He spit, "I'm the dammed Angel of Death. You're supposed to be afraid of me and stuff. Not making jokes at my expense."

"So, Angel, what's your real name?" Alex asked with a grin. Then she added, "It's good to meet another vamp hunter too. So what's your body count now?"

Chris smirked as he answered, "Chris Skye, at least that's what the priests tell me. My body count is three hundred and twelve vampires, fifty-two werewolves, and thirteen demons."

"Demons?" the vampire asked, awe evident in her tone.

Chris smiled at her and said, "Yeah, I travel in worlds that you couldn't."

The vampire shivered and said, "And I'm glad that I don't."

"So, what's a demon like?" Alex asked as she and Chris walked into her hotel room. Minerva was back in hers, gathering her weapons and clothing. Chris had told them that this could be a very long quest, which Alex thought was pretty cool.

Chris peered at her from the fall of chestnut hair with his inhuman violet eyes. Alex wouldn't have been able to tell that he was half human at first glance. He looked to much like an elf. His eyes, his ears, his grace, hell, his face. Then she realized how tall and broad he was. Elves, as a general rule, weren't tall. Fairies and sprites could be tall, but elves were usually around the four and a half foot range to five foot three at the freakishly tall.

His expression was fathomless as he answered, "Evil. Pure evil. Lesser demons live for carnage when they're not serving a master. Higher demons, fallen angels, are pure evil. They're frightening in their power and their evil, and they're so wise, an alien intelligence really." His eyes darkened as he pointed his finger at her. "Pray that you never meet up with one, Alex."

"Please, I don't believe in your God, so why should I believe that fallen angels dwell in a Hell that I also don't believe in?" Alex replied, crossing her arms.

Chris frowned and walked over to her. Before she knew it, his hands were clasping her shoulders, the dark skin stark against her paleness. He shook her slightly and hissed, "Don't you ever say that again around me."

Alex jerked away, surprised at his serious expression. He had been light and teasing the whole way, only complaining when she demanded that they go back for her crossbow. She held up her hands in a gesture of surrender as she stated, "Fine. I won't. It's just that I don't believe."

"Okay, now, about the Seal of Day," he chirped cheerfully, the grim man being replaced with an imp.

Alex stuffed a flannel shirt into her duffel and asked, "What about it?"

"We've gotta find some place to destroy it. I sort of have an idea," Chris answered.

Alex smirked at him and tapped his broad chest. She threatened, "It better be a good idea."

"Oh, like you can take me, Lupine, even though I would get a perverse enjoyment out of it," he teased with a wicked grin.

Alex took her hand away and was surprised to find herself blushing. He moved closer and said, "Two beautiful, supernatural women and me. I've died and gone to heaven."

"Really?" she asked, trying to put an edge of sarcasm in her voice. She wondered how the situation had changed so quickly, or why she felt threatened around him. She had lost her control, her power when he stepped up and saved her.

She had almost come close to dying or worse. She turned away so he wouldn't see her rub her arms. Those werewolves had easily beat her and she had been helpless. And stupid. She should have ran into the church, grabbed the stone, told the priest to get the hell out of dodge, and ran. Her stupid ego had gotten someone killed, a harmless old man. It had almost gotten her and Minerva worse, even though Minerva could very well take care of her self.

As if he was sensing her thoughts, which he probably was, "You're sort of new at this. Minerva's been alive, well, undead, for a very long time and I've been trained since I was a little kid to do this sort of shit. You're good. You just need practice."

"I don't need your pity," she said briskly as she walked out of the room.

She heard him say, "Why do all the women in my life have to be so complicated?"

I can't believe this guy is the infamous Angel of Death. Except for the first moment I saw him, standing there on the fence, his jacket flapping behind him with that scythe in his hands. Then his combat style. Quick, clean, and to the point. I've gotta admit, fighting, this guy rocks.

Then there's Chris when he's not fighting. He's joking, flirtatious, charming, and witty, a total 180 of the guy I saw standing on the fence. Elves are that way though, jolly one moment and deadly serious when the situation needs it. At least, that's what I've heard.

Still, I'm wondering if this guy has a plan or not. Minerva is uncomfortable having a church trained warrior as our new buddy, but I can see where she's coming from. Especially that he has faith in his God and had fought demons to back it up.

I don't know where the hell I stand right now, with anything. I'm drawing Chris's face right now, surprisingly right next to Gabriel's. Gabriel is more beautiful, more attractive, maybe because he's faerie and not elf. And I know that Gabriel has nothing human in him, but what, Brandon didn't say.

Anyway, I'm scared shitless now. Chris has been telling us some interesting things about the gem now. Like how it's a more-than-human virgin that the seal chooses itself. He said how it would like shine a light on them or something when it found the chick's blood that it wanted.

Then there's the fact that I had my ass kicked by a pack of werewolves. That frightens me more than anything. Well, the fact that someone acutaly managed to beat me frightens me. It scares the living shit out of me. I just wonder what the hell's gonna happen now.

Alex Night, Vampire Hunter Extrodinare

Minerva stood there and waited. She sighed as she pushed loose strands of hair away

from her face. She had gathered all of her long hair back into a pony tail to keep it out of her face. She wouldn't cut all that long hair for the world. One thing the color was too rare, too pretty and another was that it had been with her when nothing else was. It was sort of a badge of honor, like a tattoo or a scar.

She sighed as the cool wind passed through the long hairs that were determined to stay out of the pony tail and flapped her leather jacket like bats' wings. She looked down at the black watch adorning her wrist and sighed. It had been ten minutes since Chris had snapped at her to get her shit while he helped Alex collect hers.

At least she didn't have the Seal on her though. That would only make her a walking target. And to someone who usually did the targeting, it was an uncomfortable thought.

She sighed and started to whistle "Strawberry Fields Forever" as she waited. No one understood her fetish for the Beatles. Maybe because I grew up lusting after them, she thought as she checked her watch again.

She looked up again and froze. She felt a warm dot on her forehead, like a tiny pinpoint of light. Frowning, she tilted her watch up so that the reflection could be cast and sure enough there was a laser sight on her forehead.

She rolled out of the way at the last moment as the bullet hit the wall behind her. She drew up, getting out her .45 and aiming. She followed the laser sight back and fired, the recoil reverting through her arm and dampening it. She dodged another bullet and fired again.

"Oh, fuck this," Minerva snarled as her fangs lengthened and became more sensitive. She was more aware of the world around her and she could see much clearer. She could clearly see the red beam coming off of the rooftop of the Wendy's across the street. She could see the human standing there, holding a high-powered rifle at her and aiming again.

She smirked as she ran. Vampires ran much faster than humans. It was a simple fact. Stupid fuck, she thought as she got close enough to make a killing blow with the .45. She aimed and squeezed the trigger. The gunshot rang out in the night and the idiot assassin that was going after her clutched his chest as he fell off the roof.

She holstered her gun and looked around. She had sighed as she noticed that she had drawn a crowd, many of had digital phones. Within moments later, she heard sirens and saw the familiar red and blue lights flashing in the dark.

"Oh, this is good," she quipped as she looked around for the quickest escape route. She saw a dark purple Eclipse driving toward her at breakneck speed. She flinched at the bright light as it skidded to a stop a scant few feet away from her. The passengers' door flew open and Alex shouted, "Get in!"

"We've got cops," Minerva stated as Chris shifted gears toward her luggage. Alex opened the door and threw her bags in the back. Minerva managed to scramble to the back seat and turned around to look at the cops.

Alex stated, "Chris, can you get us out of here?"

Chris smiled wickedly, looking more elfin than human. His brilliant violet eyes took on a bright twinkle as he shifted again. He said, "Sure. Alex, turn on the radio please and hit One."

Alex lifted an eyebrow as Chris revved up the engine and spun the car around to face the gaining squad cars. Minerva gripped the back of Alex's seat as she watched. Chris said, "Do it, Alex."

"Fine," Alex grumbled as she turned the radio on and hit the first button. Blaring from speakers, Minerva could feel the base even, was Metalica's "Bitch". Chris grinned as he shifted again and stepped on the gas. Holding on to the wheel tightly with the metal blaring, the sleek sports car charged into the squad cars.

Minerva shouted, "Are you fucking insane!?" Chris' manic grin spread across his features as he gained speed down the slight hill. The bystanders jumped out of the way of the speeding Japanese machine as he pulled on the gear shift with a smooth control.

A cop jumped out of the car holding a megaphone. He shouted, "Stop the car and step out with your hands on your head, now!"

"And I'll see you in Hell buddy!" Chris shouted as he gained more speed. Minerva gripped the back of Alex's seat, suspecting that they were going to crash and burst into flames. She unbuckled her seat belt without realizing that she had buckled it in the first place. She heard an excited giggle from up front as the Black and Whites moved out of the way of the speeding car.

She looked at the speedometer and freaked when she read 149 MPH on it. "Are you trying to get us all killed?" she screamed in a shrill voice.

There was no answer as they flew down a hill. Literally. The car's wheels left the ground and the car was airborne. Minerva screamed as they landed with screeching metal and bouncing rubber. They heard the cop cars behind them, their sirens becoming fainter by the moment.

"Don't worry, those Crown Victorias can't catch up to an Eclipse GT Spyder, Minerva. Chill, chica," Chris soothed as they became airborne again.

Alex laughed and shouted, "Do it again! That was great!"

"Jokers to the left of me, clowns to the right, and here I am, stuck in the middle with you," Minerva grumbled under her breath as Alex and Chris gave each other high fives.

Chris slowed down and stated, "We've lost them."

"And you almost got us all killed you, irresponsible fucker," Minerva shouted over the KoRn song now blaring on the radio.

Alex grinned and turned around to face her. She stated, "Aww, come on, Minerva. You've gotta admit that it was fun."

"If you're into playing chicken with several tons of American steel, shure, it's great," Minerva replied sarcastically. She sighed and knew that it was a losing battle. After all, they were just teenagers while she was more than forty years old. Not old enough to start calling people "Young One", but old enough to have some sense to her.

She asked, "So, now what?"

Chris shrugged and answered, "Some place safe and where we can find a magic user to get rid of this."

"Louisville," Alex said calmly, leaning back in the seat and propping her boots up on the dashboard.

Minerva smiled. Forest was in Louisville. She said, "Good idea, Alex."

"Okay, I guess Louisville it is," Chris stated as he sped up once again, the Eclipse blaring out rock music. Minerva leaned up and changed the station. "Hey Jude" was playing on the radio.

Alex made a face before she frowned and Chris looked puzzled. Minerva grinned, placed her hands back behind her head and kicked her legs so that they dangled over Alex's shoulder. She stated, "Now, this is my kind of music."

And, together, the vampire, and the two halflings made their way to Louisville, haven to the supernatural and home to the Supernatural Protection Force and Forest, vampire assassin.
