Huh?

"You mean you believe me... just like that?"

Vera nodded with slight doubt. "Yeah, unless you really are lying. How can I not believe you if you're floating above my head with wings?" She touched her forehead and rubbed it. "Or maybe I'm daydreaming again..."

"NO! Not a daydream!" Aloe vanished and reappeared standing in front of her with a straight posture and a smug look on his face. "I thought this would be more difficult, trying to persuade a girl. But you're really gullible."

Errr. Vera glared at him but contained her emotions within herself. Trying to get the subject off of her she asked, "So do you know everything about me?"

"I will get to that after I state the rules."

"There's rules to living?!" Vera raised an eyebrow.

Aloe straightened a non-existent tie and his back even farther. "Rule number one. The guardian angel must remain at the human's side at all times, even in times of intimacy and need for personal privacy. Rule number two. The guardian--"

"Wait! What's that supposed--"

Aloe put his finger to Vera's lips. "Questions will be answered after the rules are said." He paused and then continued, "Ahem. Rule number two. The guardian angel must protect the human at all times and follow their appointed destiny and fate. Rule number three. The guardian angel may not reveal anything of heaven or hell no matter what the circumstances may be. Rule number four. The guardian angel may appear to their human in three forms: angel, human, or invisible. Rule number five. The guardian angel may interact with other humans but only in human form. Rule number six: The guardian angel may not fall in love with the human." Aloe stopped and narrowed his eyes. "Rule number seven. The human may not fall in love with the guardian angel."

Like that would happen.

Vera bit her lip with unease. "Is that all? Just seven rules?" Aloe didn't reply. He continued to glower at her with a certain sense of distrust. "Um. What's rule number one supposed to mean?"

Aloe sighed. "I have to be by your side at every moment, every where, whether you like it or not."

"What?!"

"As you were saying, you wanted to know if I knew everything about you, right?" Aloe crossed his arms and leaned back into the air. "Tch. Yeah. You're sixteen, you have brown hair, and brown eyes. You attend Chiwa International Private School and you currently live alone here in Japan while your family lives in the United States. Although, you were originally born in Germany. You have low blood pressure which results in you being cold..." His voice seemed annoyed and trailed off.

Vera felt her face get warm at the thought of Aloe always being right next to her. It just couldn't be real. Why her? "You're wrong. I don't have brown eyes." She slid her finger across her eye to reveal a brown contact lens hiding a green eye. "One's green, one's brown." She giggled. "Wow. I've never told anyone that before. I've been hiding it forever."

Aloe sneered. "You're hiding the only thing interesting about you. That's something to laugh about."

"You're mean! Aren't angels supposed to be kind and gentle and--"

"Maybe if you were more interesting I'd be more kind and gentle!"

Vera took a deep breath and stood up. "I'm the not going to fight with you. Besides, you don't seem to care much about me so I demand you leave."

Aloe smirked. "I already told you. I can't. I'm hear until the day you die."

KNOCK. KNOCK.

Eek! "Quick, hide!" Vera grabbed Aloe's arm and pushed him under her bed covers and sat on top of him. "Na ja, Mutti?"

"Vera? Are you feeling all right? Maybe we should reconsider this--I swear I just heard you yelling or talking to yourself..." A woman appeared from behind the bedroom door with a worried look on her face.

Vera faked a laugh. "The computer's busting on me again. No problem, though. I thought you left an hour ago, Mom. Doesn't your flight leave in fifteen minutes?"

"I forgot our passports. Anyway, I love you honey." Vera's mother blew her a kiss. "See you during winter break. Oh, and you might what to check your mattress. It looks a little lumpy."

"Danke, Mutti!"

After her mother closed the door and she heard silence outside, Vera ripped up the blankets to find nothing underneath them. "Aloe?!"

"HELLO!! Rule number four! The guardian angel may appear to their human in three forms. I was invisible!!!" Aloe screamed from behind her.

Vera turned around scratched her head with guilt. "Oops. Sorry."

"Anyway, I just received a report that I will be attending school with you starting tomorrow so get ready to show me around."

What? "Wait. Everything's happening so fast. You're going to school with me? School... Ah! I have an essay due tomorrow and I didn't even start." Vera hopped into the revolving computer chair and was thrown off at the speed of its turn. "Oomph. Ah! Be quiet! I have to get this done!" She typed words furiously, not caring whether they made sense or not.

† † †

"Finished!" Vera exclaimed while thrusting a celebrating fist into the air. She spun the chair around to find Aloe captivated within a book. "What're you reading?"

He peaked up from the pages and gave a sly grin. "Who's Kanashii?"

Vera's eyes widened and she immediately jumped up to snatch the book. Aloe flew up and teased her by lowering the book and then pulling it away before she could grab it. "Give it back! That's none of your business!"

Aloe tossed it back to her and noticed tears brimming her eyelids. Vera shoved the book into a drawer and leaned on her desk as she caught her breath. She suddenly felt a chill go up her spine and she began to shiver. She staggered over to her bed, rubbing her shoulders furiously, and pulled several blankets over her body.

"Are you okay?" Aloe asked without guilt.

"Leave me alone. I'm going to bed." Vera closed her eyes tightly and turned away from him.

Aloe shrugged and faded away. His voice echoed softly, "You didn't brush your teeth."

Throwing the blankets off the bed, Vera ran into the bathroom and quickly squirted toothpaste onto her toothbrush. As she scrubbed her teeth, she stared at her reflection in the bathroom mirror intently. She dropped the toothbrush and slipped a contact lens out of one of her eyes. Two eyes stared back at her: one green, one brown. She smiled.

Vera yawned and stretched her arms above her head as she walked back into her bedroom. She hopped into her bed and looked around, squinting to see. Aloe was still no where in sight. "Maybe this really is a dream..."

She clapped her hands and the lights turned off. Vera settled comfortably on the mattress and stared out her window to the blurred moon. Although it was already faded from airy clouds, her poor vision only made it worse. She stared at it longingly, wishing she could still see it's full beauty.

Something kicked her leg and she felt a pressure on the other side of the mattress. Vera turned over and stuck out her hands to pet her cat. As she stroked her hands over the figure, she couldn't help but wonder why it didn't feel like cat hair.

"What are you doing?!"

Vera screamed as high as her voice would go. Aloe's body appeared in the moonlit room lying next to her on the bed. He slapped his hand over her mouth and brought a finger to his lips. "Don't scream. I'm your guardian angel. Are you feeling okay?"

Vera pushed his hand away. "AM I FEELING OKAY?! What are you doing in my bed?!"

"What are you doing petting me?" Aloe smirked.

This.

Is.

Not.

Good.

Vera sighed. "Rule number one, right?"

"You were listening. Good." Aloe shoved the numerous blankets away from him. "What are all these blankets for? Are you that cold?"

Vera faked a smile.

Aloe snorted. "Oh yeah. I forgot you have low blood pressure."

"Are you really coming to school with me?"

Aloe looked at her with narrow eyes. They sat still for several minutes in silence until Aloe gave an evil grin and breathed, "Yeah. And I'm going to make your life a living hell."
